Alder | Mythology, Folklore and Magic of the Alder Tree (Fearn)
The Alder Tree (Fearn) : A Bridge Between Worlds
On the Mythology, Symbolism and Magic of the Alder Tree and it's association in the Ogham sometimes known as the 'Celtic Tree Alphabet'.
The Alder has historically been associated with the element of water, also with fire. A tree of balance, protection and communion with the Spirit World.
In the Ogham Kennings the Alder is associated with the Warrior.
In the Battle of the Trees, from the Book of Tasliesin, the Alder is the first into battle.
In Welsh Mythology the Alder has ben associated with Bran the Blessed from the Mabinogion and the Cauldron of Rebirth.
The Alder has a range of uses historical and modern, from making Iron Age spears and shields, to clogs and milk vessels, to bridges, neolithic causeways and flutes.
The tree has many associations in Paganism, Magic and Druidry, often to do with proitection, balance and contacting the realm of the dead or otherworld.

I had zero knowledge of the meaning of Rowan or anything about the tree. I had a celestial trip where I saw this red tree, still no clue what it was. Then many years later I was blessed to find out I was having a baby girl. I knew she would be strong like a tree. Then two weeks into the pregnancy I decided her name would be Rowen. I have had some sort of protector keeping me safe through quite a wild life. Almost taking off this plane several times. Then Rowen was born, she has a red birthmark on her head that looks like the leaf. I can’t help but think I was kept safe all these years so she could come into this plane. Truly has me bewildered of how her name came to me, did I mention how big and strong she is.

As you were telling the story of Iron John, it made me think of John the Baptist, with similar imagery between the two (lived in the wilderness, ate locust and honey, very "feral" in consideration to the other disciples). Then I took it a step further and with the water, crossing over, guide into the otherworld with Cernunnos, we have John the Baptist who baptizes people to wash them clean of their earthliness and bring them into their new spiritual journey with God. Maybe I'm connecting too many dots, but considering Christianity's adaptation of pagan cultures, maybe it's not too far off.

21:10 regardless of what you believe, one thing you have to remember is we do not know everything. There are many mysteries even on our own planet that we have not solved. We've explored less of our oceans than we have of space and space is so vast. We couldn't possibly hope to even have encountered 1% of all of it at this point Not saying you have to believe in everything, but you should keep an open mind that maybe things that were thought myth aren't so mythical. After all. If there's a hundred stories maybe one of them was real

That’s according to the contemporary pagan ‘tree calender’ based on works like the white goddess by Robert graves and others. I like Robert graves, I think he is much maligned, and there’s merit in this interpretation, but associating each feda with a time of year in a is a fairly modern thing. There are more general associations of trees with certain times of year from wider folklore- not the ogham specifically. Elder with Samhain. Alder with the equinoxes (both of them), yew with winter solstice, oak with summer solstice etc. These are probably older, but it’s hard to say. Each to their own though, I always say. Thanks for watching 🙏☺️

Firstly, although a year on, I'd like to pass my condolences for the loss of your mother, I lost mine 22 years ago now and still feel her presence. My Grandfather was as hed say "born on the hay". His parents travelled the west coast of scotland from near Glasgow to Longtown wintering on the estate at Longtown in Cumbria. When I was born in 1965, my mother told me how he hired a car and took me (and her) and laid me beneath "loads of different bloody trees...him and his Gypsy stuff speaking over me in Romany. I never understood it at all, never knew what trees they were except for the last one as my mother pointed it out one day saying thats the last tree your granddad took you to, it was the actual tree in a local(ish) village graveyard, and it was a Yew tree. Im only 2½ minutes in while writing this as i suddenly realised (possibly) what he was doing, did he take me through the alphabet of trees? He also insisted that I should never be christened or tied to a religion, im the only one younger and older in my family who never was. I have another tree/ woodland experience but this is long enough already.

My mother passed away a few years back. She had died in a local nursing home from Alzheimer’s disease and old age. One evening a few days after she passed, my wife and I were sitting on our sofa where we began remembering mom and laughing at some of the funny things she had said and done in life and before the ravages of Alzheimer’s took over her mind. We heard a noise coming from our kitchen. We looked at each other and I called out “mom?” Getting up to look I found an empty water bottle laying on its side on the kitchen counter gently rocking back and forth as it settled from the upright position it had been in to the new position of lying on its side. The cap was screwed on. It’s easy enough to explain that the bottle being empty and the cap on the bottle had allowed the air in the bottle to expand making its bottom rounded and unstable where just the slightest thing might cause it to topple over. For us it was the timing for this to happen just when we were remembering mom and laughing, not in a mean way, at the funny things she sometimes said or did. Was this mom interacting with us using such a normal thing as an empty water bottle?

I live in a place called Aldershot, which used to be the home of the british army (Vanguard of Warriors) also the source of the river Blackwater. Its neighbouring town Farnham (Fearnham) has a 12th century castle built atop an old spring, a well at its centre. Could it be that this ancient magic of rebirth has been weaponised?
