No you didn't. Never let the result of your attempt to achieve something determine the validity of your actions or else you'll always be second guessing yourself. What if you didn't ask her and she got upset because she said she wanted to learn more about you? Would that mean you messed up? She said no and now wants to be "friends" (which of course doesn't actually mean friends, but something much less) and that's fine because that's her prerogative. Not every interaction with a girl is going to lead to a relationship and that doesn't mean it's because you will keep "messing up" until one day you get it right. Don't change what you want just because one girl didn't like it. Keep being who you are and going after what you want.
