      Could you please show us ground strafes with different weapon setups from ground perspective? We all know how A10 Brrrt sounds from the ground and looks on target, some even know that for Viper's 20mm, but I really wonder how a 37 mm, 6 x 50 cal., 23 mm MiG-21 and 30 mm MiG-29 long strafes would look and sound on target!

      I was talking with Santa Clause the other day and he told me all he wants for Christmas was for you to make a Bf 109 vs. Fw 190 dogfight video.
      Mrs. Clause even told me Santa has been talking about wanting to see this dogfight in his sleep.
      GS, please give Santa this Christmas present. Don't break Santa's heart.
      FYI, in case you were wondering I finally got the PICC line out of my arm and it is looking good, so far, that I might not need to have the bridge they removed from my lower orbital socket replaced.

    You should do the US vs Russia thing again but with the rule that you can't choose the same jet twice so it's more interesting.
    Do like 5 or 6 rounds so you can have different engagements.

    2:22 funny you mentioned the MiG-29 becomes almost similar to an F-18. A former MiG-29 pilot for the Royal Malaysian Air Force stated that during his time flying the Fulcrum, during exercises both locally and with foreign forces, only the RMAF's own Hornet (which were purchased at around the same time as the Fulcrum during the mid-90s) ever gave him and his fellow Fulcrum pilots a proper challenge. He also stated that besides its maneuverability, the Helmet Mounted Display is one of the key factors of the Fulcrum's superiority over other aircrafts.

    Posting about rate fighting made me think of a thing.
    The F-14 and especially F-16 like to rate fight on the deck. Indeed I get the impression that unless the aircraft are grossly mismatched, a simple rate fight *only* happens on the deck, after it becomes impossible for the disadvantaged fighter to trade in energy.
    So if you're down low, there's a thing you can do in theory against SAMs and AAMs that are faster than you and flying to a proportional-navigation intercept: Fly toward the ground so the intercept point goes underground. The missile flies to the intercept point and crashes. You pull up before crashing. Now in practice you don't have the range and closure information that would be needed for this, and even if you did it would take superhuman skill and timing. You fly low, maybe bounce up and down, and just hope it happens.
    But. At the end of a rate fight, the defensive fighter has no choice but to reverse turns to try for a scissors and therefore fly in front of the offensive fighter's nose, giving him a nice shot setup on each reversal.
    1. Things happen more slowly than with the missile. Closure rates in this situation are low, or else the defender gets his overshoot, and the defender is already timing movements relative to the attacker's actions.
    2. If the offensive fighter chose a rate fight, he probably turns less tightly than the defensive (helpful but not necessary for this scheme).
    3. To hit with guns, the offensive fighter has to lead the defensive by whatever amount.
    And 4. unlike a missile, a fighter has to think about what happens after any given intercept maneuver.
    Soooo...if you're defensive on the deck, can you make turn reversals "for free" by doing them as barrel rolls toward the ground, such that the nose position required to shoot you when you cross the nose would lead to the offensive fighter flying into the ground?

    I love seeing the proof of the double engine design. There’s a whole lot of people from what I hear that always fight for planes to have two engines. For instance the US navy prefers two engines to one while flying over water, hence the F-18’s adoption over the F-16. But you never really get to see it in action. That Mig lost an entire engine and it still flew.
    Makes me wonder why the F-35 ended up with a single engine.

    • @Jkim890

    • @TurboHappyCar
      @TurboHappyCar 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@Jkim890 That's a good point. Otherwise you'd need 2 lift fans or some kind of gearbox to combine the shaft drives of the 2 engines together (but ask the Navy how that's going.)

    • @JETZcorp
      @JETZcorp 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      A single engine plane is, in general, going to be lighter, simpler, and cheaper both to buy and maintain. Bearing in mind, lower cost means you can afford to put more planes in the sky, implying survivability through simply winning the fight. While it's easy to see the redundancy value of twin engines, the truth is most fighters have used twins for performance. There simply is no engine in existence that will satisfy the power demands of an F-15 on it's own. And truthfully, modern engines are so incredibly reliable that failures have become very rare; IIRC there has never been an engine-related loss of a Gripen, for example. So with the F-35, they wanted to get as much airplane as they could with the weight and cost benefits of running a single. The Navy did protest, as did Canada, but in the end they were assimilated.

    • @debbiestimac5175
      @debbiestimac5175 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      When those doctrines were made, requiring twin engines for overwater operations, jets were still not that reliable and why passenger planes were required to have four engines. Once the high bypass fan jets started taking over like with the 777 Dreamliner, regulations were relaxed and why Fat Amy has only one blower.

    The reunification also left some interesting things for enthusiasts, like the analogue backup clock from the cockpit.
    German watch dealer managed to get some surplus of these and put of up for sale.
    Rather loud not very accurate but at least you can say: this is a Russian clock made for a fighter jet.

    If the fulcrum is a better fighter when slower than the f16, then you should try a hornet or superhornet against it!

    Hello GS, one of your most infomative videos yet. Thanks a lot for touching upon, defining and clearly explaining the basics.
    PS: Requesting to do a Dogfight between an Indian modified MiG-21 Bison vs Pakistani F-16. You are the only one capable enough to recreate a recent skirmish.

      No disrespect. Do you actually believe the Bison shot down an F-16? I know IAF is better trained.

    • @percentbigfoot
      @percentbigfoot 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@faizalsalim1194 In certain conditions it can, it's not the aircraft but radars and missiles.
      Also specifically, whether it's possible I would say yes, there is a bleak possibility of that happening.
      It depends on what was happening in that time, were the f-16s advancing or retreating, were they engaged by su-30's or not.
      Both of the situations could be true, it might not have been shot down and it could have been shot down. I guess maybe in a decade or two we will know what happened that day.

    What the hell was that noise in the first fight? Right before the end, when the Mig tried to jink...
    It sounded a bit like a mouse asking a bouncer (who used to be an army veteran) directions to the airport.
    Or a bit like the sound metallic hydrogen makes when its adsorbed onto the surface of a surfactant Bose-Einstein Condensate!!
    No, it sounds like it's precisely in between the two sounds described above!! You can hear it again at 5:34
    What IS it>???

    I wouldn't mind a little more commentary on the small things you do habitually now, just to make it make more sense.
    I have a basic understanding of what is happening in these videos, but there are still so many little things that I don't know. In a rate fight, for example, I assume the skill is in finding the balance between not losing speed, but turning hard enough to pull the enemy into your HUD. This means recognizing the movement of the enemy aircraft, reacting quickly to changes in speed or direction, things like that. Those are probably basic things you don't even think about now, but it's why there's more to it than just going in a circle.

    its funny that you mention that the f16 hates to be slow, which it is true, but in 1992 at a coup attempt in venezuela, an f16 pilot had to almost stall it to get an air to air kill against a ov10 bronco with guns, im pretty sure you might have heard this already but in case you want to check it out, there is footage of it
