Seeing the APC brought back great memories. I was stationed in Germany in the mid 80s in a medical unit. We had wheeled ambulances at first. Then we got the M 113. We loved them. We ate, slept and drove the heck out of them. We had steel pot helmets then switched to the kevlar helmet. Did P.T. with our flak jackets. Rode in the duce and a half truck. Learned to drive a jeep. In basic training we had C rations and later switched to the MRE. I was in at a good time in my opinion. Good times.
After active duty, as a reserve soldier, I was in an exercise combat patrol event against a group of the ‚Blackhorse‘ Regiment while it was stationed in the Fulda/Germany area in the late 1980s. Fine soldiers! Regards from Germany.
I had an encounter with a unit of these dudes at a fueling site in late 68. They looked like a war zone Hell's Angels gang. Cut off fatigues, beads, unshaven and dirty. They carried AK47s and looked formidable and dangerous. Their platoon leader made sure they were fueled and had what they needed. Later on they were at our EM club in Long Binh and partied hard. I wonder where we get such heroes? As a REMF I was duly impressed.
I was with the 27th Combat engineers. We arrived about a month or 2 before TET.While I was there we never got hit.But the VC attacked the town near buy .Fortunate for me it was time for me to go. I saw the rest on TV
The Black Horse Regiment base was in Long Khanh , Xuan Loc Province later became the headquarter of the famed ARVN 18th Division who scored the last victory for the ARVN by withstanding the attack of 3 NVA Divisions
My brother served with the 11th Armored Calvary June 67 to June 68. Was there for the Tet Offensive. Have met other Vietnam vets that said the 11th had saved their lives when they showed up.
My father served for awhile under Colonel Patton while he was the CO of the 11th Armored Calvary Regiment. He would ask my Dad, " Major Large, what's the bad news of the day"? ., so I was told.
David A. Drake, famous American military sci-fi writer & creator of the Hammer's Slammers, served in this unit & even based the Slammers on this very same unit!
I went over with the 11th on the ships and we became known as the “boat troopers”. I was with them until March of 67 then I was infused into the 9th Infantry Division in the Mekong Delta. The 11th was a very tough unit and the VC had respect for us and we respected them.
@ We respected them as a adversary. It goes back to the old saying “never underestimate your enemy”. As far as I know the VC never conducted mass killings or rapes. They did intimidate the locals and would on occasion kill a local government official who they considered a enemy. The VC recruited from the population so it didn’t benefit them to kill rape and pillage.
Yeah, same for me also!! He stayed in until 1979! Wife's orders to choose her, and his daughters or the Army!! He chose his family! I am the youngest kid, in a big family! 59 now. The Vietnam war should have been fought in North Vietnam by U.S. military and the south should have been handled by South Vietnam military forces. In my opinion.
Are you for real? America murdered millions of innocent women and children, destroyed most of the land with your chemical weapons, and ended getting your arses kickout after 10 years of course hell on earth! Disgraceful and you all should be ashamed!
Actually, the "Vietnam War" on the ground should have been fought primarily in Cambodia and Laos. If the Ho Chi Mihn trail had been thoroughly cut and held, the guerrilla war in South Vietnam would have withered on the logistic vine.

My brother served with the 11th Armored Calvary June 67 to June 68. Was there for the Tet Offensive. Have met other Vietnam vets that said the 11th had saved their lives when they showed up.

After active duty, I stayed in the Army Reserve and attended 19 Delta Training, "Scouts out, always forward."
My father served for awhile under Colonel Patton while he was the CO of the 11th Armored Calvary Regiment. He would ask my Dad, " Major Large, what's the bad news of the day"? ., so I was told.
Saw Col Patton at the PX in 68

Yes, nobody wanted to start a war with the Chinese. Our mission was only to stop infiltration into South Vietnam.
Wirklich....dann kommt die Chinesen und Russen..was glaubt du denn..?????
