Even though I am a Vietnam Veteran of the war in 1968 was attached to the 9th. Inf. Div. These men were the true HEROES that risked their lives to save 3 soldiers behind enemy lines 9 others risked their lives to save 1. My heart goes out to them and their families. Lt. Col. Hambleton survived the 11 days he was behind enemy lines with no water or food. I am truly glad he survived and was recused by Norris. I was finally pulled out of Vietnam in July of 69 with Nixon's pullout. I truly thank all of my fellow brothers and sisters who served in the Vietnam war that were able to make it back home and the ones who made the ultimate sacrifice. RIP. You are now with your HEAVENLY FATHER

This makes me continue to wonder if my best Vietnamese friend Sgt Nguyen Van Phu made it out or not.??? Guess I'll never know. God bless him ! Served a few months with him. 1969-70. He showed me how to cook rice in the bush and add noodles and veggies . Always felt badly for him, he came from a wealthy family who owned a liquor distillery or two, but was drafted into the ARVIN. (Staff Sgt. , Ret., USMC/USAF/ARNG ~ 24 years).

The best Wonder documentary I ever saw to date. The sound of that chopper taking LtCol Hambleton to the hospital must've been sweet music to his ears. He died Sept.19 in Tucson, Ariz at the age of 85. My greatest respect to Navy SEAL Lt Thomas R. Norris and VNN commando Nguyen Van Kiet, and to all very brave soldiers, past, present and future!!
Reminds me of a quote my brother once told me: *“If you are in trouble anywhere in the world, an airplane can fly over and drop flowers, but a helicopter can land and save your life.”* RIP Mikey💕

The sacrifice that all military personnel make is rewarded substantially less then it should be. They deserve more then our gratitude. The number of vets who are homeless and suffering from PTSD and battle wounds are an embarrassment on our government. All retired military should be able to live a middle class lifestyle on their pension but that's not the case.

Tom Norris not only distinguished himself in this rescue but also when Mikey Thorton and him were fighting for their lives in the shores of Vietnam. Thorton went back for Norris (who was presumed dead by South Vietnamese teammates) and found Norris half dead with a big wound to the head. They called in artillery on themselves, danger close? No, on top of themselves. Mikey Thorton half dragged, half swam, his SEAL brother out to a rescue ship and they both survived. The first time ever a Medal of Honor Recipient ever rescued a fellow Medal of Honor Recipient. Navy SEAL Legends who's deeds will never be forgotten...

I worked for a company that installed the equipment on the B66s that Hambleton was operating at the time he was shot down . We did the work at Shaw AFB SC . I was selected because I was a crew chief on the B66s at Shaw in the 1950s . Hambleton was there when I was with the 9th TRS . I left Shaw in 1958 for Germany and England and was assigned to the 42nd TRS . We were at Shaw in late 64 and early 65 installing the ECM on the B66s . I don’t recall meeting of flying with him .I think the B66 was hit because they may have made lost their cone protection by making a too sharp of a turn. I don’t think he was a pilot but a highly qualified ECM operator so the NVA wanted to capture him for his knowledge of that equipment that we had on those B66s .

It is normal and natural for soldiers to kill. But to risk and give your life so others may live is perhaps the highest form of duty and sacrifice.

Federal law prohibits foreign military personnel from receiving anything higher than a service cross. That's why the South Vietnamese LDNN commando that was with Tom Norris received the Navy Cross for his part in rescuing Lt. Col. Hambleton.

There were only 2 men went behind the enemy line to save Hambleton: Ranger Nguyễn Văn Kiệt and an American Ranger- they disguised as North VIetnam gurrilars with AK 47 and a small boat to get in to the jungle to save him.

2:33) a really good movie as well as a good story. That's how their names got crossed!
The man that happened to was iceal Hambleton (ham).
The actor who portrayed him in the movie was Gene Hackman.
The book was the best way to do the story though.
