Quite possibly, the most underrated and under appreciated ballplayer in the history of the game. He played in the Midwest during the era of Mays, Mantle and Aaron and probably never received his just due. This guy was an absolute stud . . tough minded and fearless . . and his career statistics rate right up there with the best of the best. He was the childhood hero of tens of thousands of Red's fans . . including me.
He really doesn't get talked about much these days. Judging by his resume, He should of been in the MLB All Century team IMO, but for whatever reason, he doesn't have the same enduring mystique of his contemporaries - Mays, Aaron, Mantle, and Clemente...

I saw Frank homer at Memorial Stadium in 1966 when he won the Triple Crown. Such electricity in the park when he stepped to the plate. He was a one-man wrecking crew that year, easily the most valuable player on a World Championship team.

He should be a lot more visible both in the black and white communities in terms of what he's done...and just like Jackie Robinson, in a way, he's been relegated to only one sector of adoration and respect. Frank put them over the top in 1966 and the rest is history as they went 3 more times while he was on the team. it was fitting that Cleveland made him the first black manager since they were the team that broke the color barrier in the American League with the signing of the great Larry Doby. Thank you Frank for the memories.

Terrific talent though.

My dad and mom were some of the original season ticket holders for the san diego padres in 69/ Franks family wife and 2 kids were siting below us on the the third base side...i was a young kid my dad pointed them out to me...they had better seats than we had...I wish now my dad would have taken my down there to met his family.....when the Padres got Ozzie smith he told me shut up and watch the best short stop you are ever going to see !!
