My uncle was Eck's dentist in Fremont as a kid. My uncle would leave his office just to go watch Eck pitch as a little leaguer. He said Eck was a man among boys. RIP Uncle Jack.

I grew up here in Boston, and we are so proud and fortunate to have the Eck calling our games from the booth. Dennis has the perfect combination to be where he is. He's got a great sense of humor, he's got the looks, and most importantly, he's got that great baseball knowledge. We have a great team of color analysts for the Red Sox on our NESN baseball station. Besides the Eck, we've got the scooter, ex-Red Sox 2nd baseman Jerry Remy. We also have ex-Sox slugger and Hall of Famer, Jim Rice. Ex-Sox knuckleballer Tim Wakefield, and ex-Sox player and Fox colorman Steve Lyons. Well, it's Friday and the All-Star break was Tuesday. Time for the second half to begin. And if it's anything like the first half, some fun we're going to have here in Boston. The Red Sox are leading the Major Leagues with a record of 68-30. Their best first half since 1949. Rightfielder Mookie Betts is leading the Majors with a .359 batting average. He also has 23 home runs, and 51 RBI. Designated Hitter J D. Martinez is leading the Majors with 29 home runs and 80 RBI's.The Sox have four starting pitchers with at least 10 wins. Including ace Chris Sale who is 10-4, (4th) with a 2.23 ERA, (1st ) and 188 strikeouts (1st).

I got to interview Eck--he was always a favorite. The feat that gets glossed over in this show is the 21 and 2/3 consecutive hitless innings he pitched in '77, with the no-hitter sandwiched in the middle of that stretch. Only Cy Young strung together more such innings in MLB history. Yeah--THAT Cy Young. Think about it--if a guy goes 21 or so SCORELESS innings now it's a pretty big deal, let alone hitless.

Dig this: ln the opening highlights of this story, as Eck's story begins, it shows Kirk Gibson hitting a homerun. That was game 1 of the 1988 World Series. Dodgers vs Oakland A's. He hit it off Dennis to end and win the game. That's when and where Dennis Eckersly created and coined the phrase 'Walk Off Homerun'.

There are few things more enjoyable than watching old ball players whine about opponents not obeying the "unwritten rules" of the game. So what if Eck pointed at guys after striking them out? So what if a young guy flips his bat after a home run? That stuff makes the game sooooo much more entertaining. You don't want some guy to flip his bat? Then strike him out! Problem solved. Eck was one of a kind.
