I asked my grandfather when I was young at comerica park who his favorite player was, he pointed at Greenberg. I miss him dearly, and those days watching the tigers.
Based on the scores at the bottom, this aired sometime in early January of 2010 after the Alabama/Texas national championship game. Crazy to think that match up will never happen again for the natty with Texas joining The SEC. Thank you for the upload.
I've always loved baseball and its' history, so of course I know the name Hank Greenberg, knew about his 58 homers, coming back from WW2 in time for the pennant run and World Series... and that was about it. Having now watching this documentary, I am deeply, deeply impressed by Mr Greenberg, I had no idea just what he went through, and love the fact that he and Jackie Robinson crossed paths on the basepaths, what a fitting, poetic thing.
The Greenberg documentary is wonderful, but keep the video rolling past the 43 Minute mark to enjoy an equally wonderful documentary piece on Dan Gable.
My Father was a fan of the most obscure of New York's baseball teams, the N.Y. Giants. He grew up not too far from the Polo Grounds in Upper Manhattan. One of his heroes however, was Hank Greenberg of the Detroit Tigers.
One of the all time greats who made our people so proud!. He was a patriot who served 4 years as a Captain in the Burma Theatre. He lost 4 of his best years serving his country in a battle area..Maurice H
Great, Great player... Only hit 331 homeruns but that was because he chose to serve his country and miss prime year's. If not for that he would've easily hit 600+ But RIP to a true Humanitarian.
Hey, come on, let Tigers fans have something, lol. That's the way things fall. Some Yankee fan here bitched because the Yanks didn't sign a Bronx boy, but Greenberg knew he'd never dislodge Gehrig. Why shuold the Yankees have everyone? As it is the Yanks and Sox almost traded Joe D. straight up for Ted Williams. How would you have felt about thst. Why did the Indianshave Bob Feller? Its so everyone can win once in a while.
@@williamsnyder5616 If I was 10 years old in the 1940s. I probably would have been very hurt. Then something odd happened. I grew up. Not on purpose In relevance to what you're saying. I have great respect for Carl Yastrzemski. As opposed to Tom Brady I enjoyed David Ortiz. As a ball player and strongly believed him innocent in the use of roids But he is a dumbass. Ignorant as is Cora for what they've said against President Trump I have my priorities. Trump 20/20
There was another Jewish player for the Tigers back in the early 1900s - Claude Rossman. He was a well-above average hitter and fielder (first baseman) who played alongside Cobb and Crawford.
Crazy that people had a problem with Jews. Helped though that he was big as a house and handsome as hell. Don't know if Koufax suffered from it; again, helped that he was so good and so handsome.
To all Mr. Greenbergs living relations, Baseball consumed my mind until I became a teenager. I knew Mr Greenberg, although before my time, was a great. I had and coveted my Greenberg baseball cards. I didn't relate to his religion, or Mays color of skin. It was from the hypocrites mouths that were quick to point out what should not have been mentioned, that I and many others young dreamers would never have known. To me Mr. Greenberg was a great great man.
Jew or Gentile, Hank Greenberg was a great baseball player. If he didn't lose 5 years in the Army, he may have surpassed Babe Ruth' s 714 lifetime homers.
Does anyone know why the NYY front office negligently didn't sign up the Bronx born Hank Greenberg?? They made the same mistake with the famous Rocky Colavito. (1951).
The answer is in his book, _Hank Greenberg: The Story of My Life_ . All you need to know is who was playing first base for the Yankees during that time.
Rarely do I come in defense of the Yankees, but they can't be blamed at all for the failure to sign Hank Greenberg. This documentary points it out. By the time Hank reached Detroit, he still would've been on the bench in Yankee Stadium. Lou Gehrig was still in his prime.
Greenberg seems like a hell of a guy / ballplayer. The MLB needs to do a better job of showing the teenagers and up, about all of the great player's in the league's past.

Holy shit... what an incredible man. I'm glad I was able to see this. Thanks for uploading it

One of the most underrated player of all time. He is one of the best hitter of all time. One of the best RBI hitter of all time!
Great video you guys did a great job thank you

They also faced really mean racist ballplayers on the ballfield to ya know right?
He was great’ ✡️
A legend, my baseball hero.

My go to show almost every bedtime.lol
Hammerin’ Hank does not get the attention he earned or deserved, especially when it came to his mentoring & friendship of black players.
Ruth wasn't the only slugger in baseball back then.
A great profile of a great ball player.
Hank - Extraordinary.
Man drove in 170 rbi. And I think he did it in 154 game season....
Just think about that craziness....
184 actually (in 1937)
Had Hank played in Boston , he would have hammered that Green Monster .
TheBatugan77 but he would have!

September 15, 2018: Another beacon of light! Thank you Hank for the courage to represent the Jewish community as a great ball player!
He my great grandpa I am so happy don’t care if u don’t believe me
For Greenberg, the fight was personal. He just wasnt fighting for his country, he was fighting to free his people

Wonder how he and Cobb got along off the field.

Two "hammers" in baseball history: Hank Greenberg and Hank Aaron.
Hank was one of only six (6) players to have a career slugging percentage of .600 or higher. Does anyone here know who the other five are?
I have no idea but I'll look it up.
Jew or Gentile, Hank Greenberg was a great baseball player. If he didn't lose 5 years in the Army, he may have surpassed Babe Ruth' s 714 lifetime homers.
sad to see... what humans do to one another... I have stacks of jewish friends, great people
42:35 is where Greenbergs part ends
And the Dan Gable profile after Hank? WOW!!!
Wild he won 2 MVP’s but not during his 58 bomb season when another incredible slugger Jimmie Foxx won.
Hank was a big strong boy don't know much about Hank his nicknamed amongst his Jewish fans was Hankala

Gehrig may not have wanted to be shown up as he had been by Ruth.

He’s my old old old cousin, I have his cards.
Yes he is
@@Luigi-hh1sh NO he isn't. Stop bragging.
Yes he was, stop being jealous.
Lucky
What's the deal with Mary Jo's voice?
I bet Virginia Slims or Benson & Hedges

😪😪😪😪😪😪
Could have been playing the field in Detroit . Some folks have 'X' tra time for other activities post-retirement.
Did they EVER stop a game when Jackie Robinson was being yelled all types of racial insults? No.
Give me a break.
Collective eye roll
Koufax was great obviously, i think Hank Greenberg was the best Jewish baseball player ever.
