  • Here we revisit Mid-State Solid Waste, a small locally owned company based out of Templeton in the north county. Many of you may remember seeing the CWS Square Body FL I filmed from them last summer, and in this video I present what I assume to be their spare front loader, a 1997 Peterbilt 320 with an old school Amrep front load body.
After a second failed attempt to film their WhiteGMC split rapid rail, it was almost a wasted trip until I heard this truck start up as I was waiting by the yard. There are many quirks and interesting details about this truck that make it far more unique than your average Amrep Octo FL. First and likely most noticeable is the rare "drop down" tailgate, something I've only ever seen in photos. I'm unsure about what the specific purpose of this design is besides more yardage, so maybe someone else out there knows more than I do. Another feature of this truck is the underbody arm hydraulics, an iconic manufacturing spec to most front load trucks of the era. You will also notice that this cab is in fact a RHS low entry, which leads me to believe that this was possibly used for manual collection before Mid State went entirely automated... but due to the lack of history or knowledge about the company or service area it is hard to say if this was the case. Lastly, one of the smaller features I like about this truck are the chromed Budd steel wheels... another thing unique to Mid-State’s older trucks.
Anyhow, it was definitely cool seeing this truck, along with a skilled operator behind the wheel, tackling this commercial route! Huge thanks to the driver for letting me follow along and grab some video.

Oh my goodness the sound and intensity that these trucks have is simply uncomparable to today’s trucks. This brings back so many memories of my childhood, it makes me feel so nostalgic! Gosh!!! I can almost smell those truck fumes through my phone LOL! Best smell ever

Great video! My favorite thing about the truck is the half white/half yellow coloring of it! The editing is also on point 😍

wow absolutely amazing truck. such a fan of the chrome budds, as everyone else seems to be. way more common in pics of trucks from the 80s, so I'm guessing alcoas just weren't as affordable or something back then. 1:44 and 3:21 were some of the best clips showing off that rough and fast arm action I'm not a part of with the mcneilus saturation in place here. that sound really makes this feel nostalgic too, definitely CAT and Mike may be correct about the model. but it all does seem weird for a 97... mid-state has been known to rebody trucks looking at the octo asl in their fleet so this body (and engine???) could be much older than the 1997 cab. regardless, the truck is plenty classic to get me sighing and wondering wtf happened to so much of the stuff that got me interested in this industry. now let's see this driver in the rapid rail lol. or even the cws

oh just kidding about CAT, autocheck says it's a '98 model with 8.3L displacement, which can only be the Cummins 8.3 (later the ISC)

Everything about this truck is odd. Body styling seems a good few years older than the chassis and it sounds like a 3208 Cat... in a 320. Super unusual but I totally dig it. I've been a fan of that polished steel wheel look ever since I saw one of WMs 310 Octo ASLs with them years ago. I had no idea just how strange this truck was all this time. Seeing it in the line I always assumed it was your average 2000s era 320 Octo but that couldnt be more false. Awesome find as usual.
Im not completely certain if Im remembering this right, but I believe I was told that the drop tailgate is a result of full eject cylinders that arent quite long enough to push all the way to the back of the longer bodies so rather than completely design new cylinders with an additional stage, the solution was to just have the blade stop a couple feet short of the tailgate and drop the rear of the body down for the remaining trash to just slide out as you pull forward after rejecting.

You nailed it sir, this truck is way more bizarre than I had originally thought. The steel wheels are probably one of the coolest things about this truck right after that drop down tailgate. I knew you or someone else would have some knowledge regarding that design, so good to know that’s the story behind that design. Seems like they are still currently running their WhiteGMC split RR on county routes so I’ll be checking up on that soon. Thanks for the comment and glad you enjoyed the video!

Awesome catch Eli!! Definitely a unique FL. The drop down tailgate is probably my favorite thing speced on this truck as it gives off huge old school Amrep vibes. Like at 3:09 that we got to see the truck start up lol. The operation was awesome, this driver definitely knew how to operate a front loader. Awesome work my man!

Thank you! Definitely an old school truck for sure and likely one of the last of its kind on the road. Haha when he first started it up in the morning it kept stalling out and look liked that problem continued at 3:09 as well. Thanks again for the comment!

Killer video Eli!! This is truly one of the coolest videos I’ve seen In a minute!! Driver ran it extremely well and love how he stabbed a majority of the dumpsters! Really enjoyed the shots at 7:12 and 8:34 both showed off the old school/unique tailgate!! I was thoroughly entertained the whole video! Awesome work on this one man!
