  • Deanna Durbin (vocal) with Charles Previn and His Orchestra. Recorded in Los Angeles, California on December 12th 1938. Durbin had just become 17 years old on December 4th when she recorded it.
The song was written by Jimmy McHugh (music) and Harold Adamson (lyrics) for the 1938 Universal Musical Picture "That Certain Age", starring Deanna Durbin (who sang it in the movie) and Melvyn Douglas. The song was Oscar-nominated "Best Song" in 1939 and became very popular, recorded also by Tommy Dorsey with Edythe Wright, Gene Krupa, Larry Clinton, Les Brown, Jan Savitt, Geraldo with Al Bowlly or Jane Froman.
"Edna Mae Durbin (December 4, 1921 - April 17, 2013), known professionally as Deanna Durbin, was a Canadian-born American actress and singer, who moved to the U.S. with her family in infancy. She appeared in musical films in the 1930s and 1940s. With the technical skill and vocal range of a legitimate lyric soprano, she performed many styles, especially operatic arias and semi-classical pieces, which is today called classical crossover.
Durbin was a child actress who made her first film appearance with Judy Garland in Every Sunday (1936), and subsequently signed a contract with Universal Studios. She achieved success as the ideal teenaged daughter in films such as Three Smart Girls (1936), One Hundred Men and a Girl (1937), and It Started with Eve (1941). Her work was credited with saving the studio from bankruptcy, and led to Durbin being awarded the Academy Juvenile Award in 1938.
As she matured, Durbin grew dissatisfied with the girl-next-door roles assigned to her and attempted to move into sophisticated non-musical roles with film noir Christmas Holiday (1944) and the whodunit Lady on a Train (1945). These films, produced by frequent collaborator and second husband Felix Jackson, were not as successful; she continued in musical roles until her retirement. Upon her retirement and divorce from Jackson in 1949, Durbin married producer-director Charles Henri David and moved to a farmhouse near Paris. She withdrew from public life, granting only one interview on her career in 1983."

The fotos you see in the video are shot around 1938 (foto 1) and 1940 (foto 2).
This Brunswick record is played on an Electrola table top Gramophone, model 130 from ca. 1930!
    And here's the song text:
    My own
Let me call you my own
Let me make you a part
of the song in my heart
Alone Im just living in vain
    everything that I do
    is depending in you
Show me a sign of your longing for me
    Say you are mine
and forever that you will be...
My own let me call you my own
    every dream I have known
has been built of but one desire just to call you my own
Show me a sign of your longing for me
say you are mine and forever that you will be
My own every dream I have known
has been built of but one desire
just to call you my own

What do soprano legends like Joan Sutherland and Maria Callas have in common with such diverse personalities as Winston Churchill and Anne Frank?
They all adored Deanna Durbin, number one box office magnet of the war years. Like Mario Lanza or Sarah Vaughan, she had the makings of an opera star, but unlike them she is rather forgotten these days. Mario, who was of Deanna's vintage, 1921, died at the tender age of 38, Deanna at the ripe old age of 91. Not yet 30, she completely retired to France, never to perform publicly again. It was a time when some female stars simply chose to get married and become housewives. Another such example would be Alice Faye, who literally went off the stage, never to return again (well, once for the terribly flopped remake of _State Fair)._
Deanna Durbin was to Universal what Shirley Temple was to Fox - a singular phenomenon, never to be repeated, both in terms of inimitable talent and the flow of time. Some things are quintessentially of their time and place and don't fit into any other frame of our spacetime continuum.
The song is ended, but the melody lingers on... at least on Julian's brave little phonograph.
P.S. The TD recording is my favorite. Edythe Wright was one of the best band singers of the 1930s, and she too simply married and retired... and died way too young, at only 49. The good really seem to die young... or live very long, in France, far away from the hustle and bustle of Hollywood.

Thank you for your very interesting and detailed comment, dear Henri and I'm happy you enjoyed hearing this recording again!! 🎶👍😃 Deanna Durbin was a wonderful singer and actress with natural charm and charisma - certainly worth to remember..... or to discover (for those, who don't know her)!! 👌 Have a nice and relaxing Sunday, my friend and take care!! 🍀🌷🌼🌸🌷

Deanna is fabulously skilled and fully accomplished in this very early recording in her career. Her vocal is deeply involved, intense and emotional, whereas Charles Previn (unrelated to André Previn by the way) is offering a wonderfully smooth and refined accompaniment as well. Thank you so much dear Julian for sharing this gem!

Deanna Durbin certainly is worth to remember - a wonderful singer and actress with natural charm and charisma!! She stopped her career at the age of only 27 and became a happy private person taking care of her family - most probably a wise decision! Thank you for your keen comment, dear Patrick - I'm happy you liked this early recording with her!! 🎤🎵🎶👍😃 Have a nice and relaxing Sunday, my friend and take care!! 🤗🍀🌷🌼🌸

@@juliansshellacs7807 She absolutely is, dear Julian! An exceptional artist whose career was way too short, although for her personal life quitting the music and film business may well have been the best decision. Thank you so much for presenting this stunning performance on your channel! I hope you are having an excellent week, my friend, Take care!

Deanna Durbin…
