  • Johnny Hauser (vocal) with Paul Whiteman and His Orchestra. Recorded in New York City (Studio 2) on March 13th 1936.
The song was written by Richard Rogers (music) and Lorenz Hart (lyrics) for the Broadway musical production "On Your Toes" with the first live performance on March 21st 1936 by Doris Carson and Ray Bolger. Other recordings for example in 1936 by Hal Kemp and His Orchestra with Skinny Ennis, Henry King and His Orchestra with Joseph Sudy or in 1957 by Sarah Vaughan with Hal Mooney and His Orchestra.
Johnny Hauser (born John F. Hauser on October 27th 1910 - died in July 1985) was an American Singer, known mostly as a singer with the Paul Whiteman Orchestra from 1934 to 1936. He filed a lawsuit against the bandleader, claiming he had not been properly compensated for his vocal efforts. Only few recordings with him exist.
"Paul Whiteman (born March 28, 1890, Denver, Colorado, U.S.-died December 29, 1967, Doylestown, Pennsylvania, U.S.) was an American bandleader, called the “King of Jazz” for popularizing a musical style that helped to introduce jazz to mainstream audiences during the 1920s and 1930s."

Paul Whiteman had one of the most famous bands and it is obvious why: this orchestra is so smooth and colourful, playing flawlessly like clockwork :-) I also enjoyed the catchy and witty vocal by Johnny Hauser. Thank you very much my friend for presenting yet another outstanding rendition!

1:29 "It couldn’t be *tonsillitis,* it feels like *neuritis."* It's lines and rhymes like this one that make you aware of the talents of a great lyricist and eventually have you fall in love with their work. As artistically impressive and commercially successful as Richard Rodgers' collaboration with Oscar Hammerstein may have been, I prefer the Rodgers & Hart years, and most jazz musicians do as well. Another remarkable moment is at 2:28 when an English horn duo joins in the (built-in) call-and-response pattern of the song, then taken over by the trombones and the flutes. Brief, swift, charming, love this kind of arrangements! By the way, Paul Whiteman didn't wield the baton here, it was Adolph Deutsch, a name that aficionados of '40s and '50s Hollywood know from many opening credits. Before I forget, Johnny Hauser was perfect, and the old-fashioned alto sax an echo of pre-swing era Whiteman.

Thank you for your wonderful comment, dear Henry and I'm happy you liked this recording!! 😃 Yes, I also prefer the pairing of Rogers and Hart - they worked perfectly together! 👌 And I love the arrangement of the recording so much, that I heard it several times - but not all views are from me! 😜🤣 Have a good start into the new week, my friend and heartfelt greetings! 🤗🍀🌷🍀
