This is so informative! I've wondered which was better because this is what i do for a living. I own a vac sales & repair business. One word of advice to all: If you wind the excess hose too get it out of the way while using it, try to arrange it with the largest loop space will allow. If you have the loop too tight/small, you will lose suction and possibly clog up the hose.
It makes my heart so happy to see you come from humble beginnings and now look at you go! You can now afford the tools you need to make your work even better /easier !! You're an inspiration ♥️ I am a single mom on unpaid medical leave so you inspired me to try refinishing furniture for the money I need to live! I can't thank you enough... I've learned EVERYTHING I know from you♥️
Angie, this video is exactly what I've been waiting for. You did a thorough job comparing, thank you! I was really hoping for a clean and clear preference hahaha. Please keep us posted, as you continue to use them. Thanks a bunch for sharing, your opinion is valuable 🙂
Of all the product reviews I’ve seen, this is one of the best! You went so in-depth with your comparison and you were really transparent, which is great for all the over-thinkers out there who like to know everything before they purchase like me lol
Hi Angie, great video as always. I have a Festool CT 15 E HEPA Dust Extractor and I love it. I would have been happy with a Surfprep system but US exhange, shipping and duty is a killer, UGH. I have one tip you may not be aware of, the Festool filter bag doesn't have a cap like Surfprep, but it does seal when you remove it. There is a hidden cardboard cover, like a pocket door, that slides across the opening. No dust cloud to choke on when you change bags! Thanks for sharing all of your inspiration and knowledge!
Andersonville, Tennessee here! This was very informative. Please keep us updated after the two weeks, and let us know which you prefer. And thank you! This is so much money to invest on either of these, and it was great to get your insight!
They definitely are an investment! It took me about 4 years of doing this before I was able to afford to upgrade to the Festool and it’s just such a massive difference. Definitely worth it for people doing this full time or seriously part time. :-)
I would be SO appreciative of an update! I've worked with a festool at a shop job, and have always been curious if any other brands can compare! Could you please do a comparison on the prices of the extras like bags, filters, and anything else? Thanks for posting 💖
Great information,Angie! Im looking into both and this is making my decision a lot more informed and ill be more confident when i decide which to buy! Real world applications really help in making an informed decision, plus knowing how you pay attention to detail, makes it that much better! You rock!
This is a great video and deserves as many views as your actual restoration videos. I learned a lot both about the products specifically and more generally about the challenges and importance of dust collection. Thank you.
Thanks so much for doing this. I've been wanting to pick one of the 2 up but couldn't decide which one. I'm driving to Florida in December so I'll pick up the surf prep to avoid the delivery costs and duty.
This was helpful, thanks. I'm a house painter and occasionally paint cabinets. Considering how much time I have to spend cleaning and managing dust when I do them, I've been considering buying one of these. It ought to pay for itself after several projects.
Thank you for this video! I just paid for my SurfPrep sander, so a vacuum is out of the budget for now. But your original dust collection system looks like it would be just the small upgrade I need. Thank you for the details and transparency!
Great info!! Please keep us updated as you use both. They do sound pricey, but really not when you realize that you are protecting your lungs. I believe a dust collector is a very worthwhile investment.
Angie, thanks so much for taking the time and expense of comparing these for us. I have been using a shop vac, and its exactly as you said, its all i had at the time. A new system might be my next purchase, and this helped alot!
Thank you so much for this comparison. I know this has been about 8 months so checking in to see if you have a favorite. I’m about ready to purchase one.
I ended up keeping the Festool for general shop cleanup and for attaching to my Dewalt, and the SurfPrep one I have permanently hooked up to my SurPrep sander. I opted to use the Festool for general cleanup/vacuuming out drawers, etc because the hose actually fits the Dewalt's dust output, and I wouldn't need to buy an adapter for it. Whereas the SurfPrep vacuum perfectly fits the SurfPrep output.
Angie, if you haven’t seen the Cen-Tec hose adapter set I highly recommend it. It’s on Amazon. I’ve gotten it to work with all my tool dust ports. I use their vacuum hose though so I’m not sure the compatibility with festool itself though.
I'm interested to see how the surfprep holds up. One thing to look out for is to see if the suction power/actual dust extraction drops off over the next few months. I've used a c26 for years and it's never let me down. Keen to see how you go with this down the track 👍🏻
I have no complaints with it! I love the ct 26. It hurt to buy it but I can’t imagine refinishing or more recently, woodworking without it. Something to consider with getting more power tools, is The Camvac line of extractors. It’s high pressure and high volume. Depending on how many motors you run, it handles anything from sanders to planers and jointers. Unlike standard DCs, it does very well with both large and small hoses. I can’t say enough about it and as the scale of what I’ve been doing has grown, the Camvac is one of the best purchases I’ve made. Love the videos. They are a large part of my I started refinishing
I'd keep the dust deputy hooked up to the vac you use for sanding as it'll pick up the really fine dust and save you a load on bags and filters. I've got a really good Fein vac that I use with a DD and I've never had to change the bag and only blow out the filters with air every month or so.
Great info! I have a surf-prep sander but not the vacuum. My vacuum has the unwrapped hose along with the surf-prep unwrapped hose and I really don't like that; the wrapped festool hose looks much more flexible (?) I look forward to hearing more from you on the surf-prep vacuum as I think I would consider purchasing one. As always, thank you Angie! You are wonderful!
Thank you for making this video. It was very informative and super helpful. You do a great job of providing very specific details in a clear and concise way! Great job!
Really appreciate the comparison. I noticed the surfprep had two slots and other holes on top (probably for additional storage trays), but I would think you could easily make a cord wrap that would fit those slots/holes and it could be transfered to each tray.
I bet you can find a 3M product to stick to the Surf Prep so you can wrap your cord! They make so many neat items that really help organize your space. So glad you did this comparison as I am interested in getting a surf prep!
Yup - that Festool is pricey. I bought mine along with the Festool track-saw and it works great! Get the long-life bag for the Festool- can be re-used for 100+ times. The other plus for me is the bayonet fitting in the Festool hoses secure well to the tool so it can’t slip off - only caveat is that your tool has to be Festool as well. I’ve slowly changed out all my tools with Festool and I can honestly say it’s a game changer. The quality and precision is unmatched.
What a great video 😊 I’m working my way up to buy one of these. I love them both just the same. Hmmmmm decisions decisions 🤔🤔🤔🤔. Such a big fan!!! You should do a meet and greet or a sweepstakes! Works love to meet you and learn a few things💜💜💜
Thanks for the comparison and overview, much appreciated. I have the CT midi I and love it but I do like how compact that surfprep is. A couple of things about the surfprep I'm not a huge fan of though; while the container of the surfprep may be larger, it doesn't state the bag capacity aside from weight, which is next to meaningless since different types of dust have different weights and densities. On the festool the bag capacity is very close to the container capacity (26 liter container, 24 liter bag). Also, it doesn't look like the surfprep can use other hoses aside from the surfprep one. The festool uses an industry standard size for the inlet (vac) end of the hose; you can use festool hoses on most off the shelf vacs (any that use the 2 1/4" vac end opening), and, if you decide to be a maniac, you can use most standard vac hoses with a 2 1/4" vac end on festool vacs. Both would benefit from using a cyclone separator like the dust deputy. Festool makes their own, but it's pricey as you'd imagine. Just make sure it's sealed up and it'll be efficient.
I actually used to gave a Dust Deputy attached to a Shop Vac and found it worked great. But you're absolutely right, the Festool version is very expensive. Thanks so much for watching!

Yes, I used the Oneida with my shop vac prior to getting the Surfprep or the Festool, with these two systems - either one gets rid of the shop vac and Oneida set up. Thanks for watching!
Hello Angie, how that you have had both dust extractors for over a year do you have a preference? Thank you. I am in Canada also and debating between the two.

Anyone in Ontario, Canada..ColourX store had 2 locations..on in Toronto and 1 in Woodbridge..the Surfprep is $908.00 plus tax. Festool on their site has 4 different hepa vacuums..thanks Angie I've been dying to know the comparisons. I'm also interested in sufprep orbital sander. I keep hearing about festool and how fast it works, but I've noticed they are set on a higher speed. I figure I can just turn up the speed on my orbital sander lol TOO many things out there 🙄
Yep! I ended up keeping the festool for general shop cleanup and for attaching to my Dewalt, and the SurfPrep one I have permanently hooked up to my SurPrep sander. Just in time! I have a fairly new surf-prep sander and was looking to get one of the two vacuums you just compared! Sounds like they’re neck and neck depending on my space, etc Question - is one better than the other for using with the old Dewalt? I still use mine. Thanks as always

I also love that Festool snag free hose. It reminds me of the old Electrolux canister vacuums.
Enjoying this post. Amazon does sell self stick appliance hooks for your cords.

100%!!
Thank you so much. I think the Surfprep sounds great. Honestly, the Festool is too expensive.
Great comparison video. I personally have the Festool ct midi and I can’t speak for the surf prep. But I definitely love my Festool dust extractor
Perfect timing! I was just looking for a dust collector the other day. I’m about to start a couple projects and always liked how you had yours set up.
I'm so glad to help! Thanks for watching!
Thank you for taking the time to review these machines! I appreciate your effort and feedback!

I’ll take one of you have too many 😂
Hahaha! I'm happy to have one (whichever one it will end up being) to be dedicated to the saws. :-)
Wish I could like this twice, thank you.

I use my regular shop vac with my Surf Prep and it works great! The only thing I see that these do ,that mine does not do ,is turn on and off automatically with the sander. That would be nice.
Thanks so much for watching Connie!
Great to know! Thank you
My pleasure!
Thank you! Great info! :)
No worries! :-)
great video, thank you Angie!

God bless ya girl…. I could use one of those for housework…. Hehehe.
This place is way more than dusty tho.
Glad you got upgrades!!!!
Right!! These are likely more powerful than our old central vac in the house. haha
Great info; thanks so much‼️

Hi. It’s been 6 months since this video. Which is your preferred? Why? I’m getting ready to pop for the same Festool. But, thought your presentation was good, so would like your views now. thanks much.

Could you please compare festtool sander to surfprep sander?
I don't have a festool sander! I'd love one though, haha.
So, forgive me if this is a stupid question, but with these two systems is the oneida piece part of the setup you can do without? Thanks.
Yes, I used the Oneida with my shop vac prior to getting the Surfprep or the Festool, with these two systems - either one gets rid of the shop vac and Oneida set up. Thanks for watching!
If you value silence along with the great suction, the MakitaVC4210L is the way to go. At 60DB it literally leaves these 2 in the dust.
Thanks for the tip!
Hello Angie, how that you have had both dust extractors for over a year do you have a preference? Thank you.
I am in Canada also and debating between the two.
