I agree, garden center material is a great way to get into bonsai. It's my preferred method and the advice I give folks who are interested in getting into bonsai.
My favorite tree species is American Hornbeam. They put out growth all growing season, are easy to transplant, very durable, develop interesting fluting trunks, are hardy in a wide range of zones 3-9, and can have pretty good fall color. Love the Crape Myrtle at 4:09, it actually reminds me of the way a lot of Hornbeams grow in the wild that I see, curved/slanted trunks, nice find. Also great "Intro to Bonsai" video.
I am only a few years into my bonsai journey so im loving everything about the hobby, there is so much to learn and there are so many amazing trees of all different species that i change my favourites quite often. At the moment though clumps and forests are really grabbing my attention.
My favorite tree is Rose of Sharon. Readily available and terrific for practicing clip and grow. It responds well and you can get some very delicate branching. Another is American Hornbeam.
Great vid. My favorite bonsai tree is Juniper. I'm new to bonsai. I never thought of crepe myrtle as bonsai. They grow like weeds in my area. I'll have to give them a try. Thanks
I bought 4 azaleas, which were buy one get one free, from a nursery recently. I had to look through the lot but found some that will make great bonsai eventually.
Junipers are my favorite bonsai and I would love to win this because I just got into bonsai this year and I’ve researched a lot and I’m going to expand my collection this growing season but I have to buy them online because I don’t have a nursery near me

My favorite also is weeping willows. Question, for floppy foliage is that too much or too little water? (On my juniperus)
Weeping willing i tried and failed. But you mean like dropping foliage on it?
