I like how they made Damien sympathetic at first rather than have him just fully embrace from the beginning.

As a child he did things instinctively. This movie he realized he could do something, but wasn't sure why or how. He realizes his actual fate after the hair cutting scene and knows he's going to destroy the world. He is having a nervous breakdown with satanic powers the rest of the film. I don't think I'd handle it much better.

@@karlajaeger2082Which is probably why I didn't like Omen 3 so much. Granted he's a lot older and he's certainly had time to mull things over, but I think I might've actually preferred a story where he decides to act against the prophecy, maybe in the last minute as a kind of defiant last stand of asserting himself as a person and not just a meta-narrative tool.

    • @karlajaeger2082
      @karlajaeger2082 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

@@Takeshi357 personally I think they realized they'd painted themselves into a corner. They didn't want to let damien win bc the audience wouldn't stand for it. Add in the complete deus ex machina of an unclimatic ending, wooden acting, and film was dead on arrival.

@@karlajaeger2082 The Omen II Novelization even has Damien trying to use his powers for good at first, when the boiler explodes at the plant. I watched this movie on HBO when I wasn’t supposed to as a kid. I told my best friend about this awesome film where a guy gets cut in half. He came for a sleep over and we snuck into the living room to watch it after everyone went to bed. Shortly after the slice and dice scene, my friend got scared and we went to bed. When I woke up the next morning, I was in super trouble. My pal woke up screaming from nightmares (which I slept through) and ended up sleeping in my parents room. He wasn’t allowed over for a while and for years he would wind up sleeping on his parents floor next to their bed. I essentially broke my friend.

The idea that Damien could actually care for the people that are supposed to be his family is the best thing this movie has going for it. He is growing like a normal person would and maybe his evil nature could be suppressed somehow. Obviously that idea doesn’t fully work for the purpose of a horror movie but it’s still a great premise. Also, Jerry Goldsmith music is as great as ever.

i like that he wasnt always blatantly devilish, but his personality was always smug and arrogant, playful and prideful, i liked that a lot. he was, of course, still sympathetic tho. also, his reaction to his fate was very realistic and i was very satisfied with it, although i wish they had explored his psyche a little more, his thoughts and him SLOWLY coming to terms with his role in the apocalypse, but i still enjoy his character a whole lot. underrated movie

I thought all 3 movies were good in their own way .
1st one , of course is the best , creepy atmosphere and amazing music
2nd one , was the most entertaining and I liked how Damien figures out who he really is was done well and him slowly accepting it and giving in is unsettling.
3rd one . ( my personal favorite) To me , was the most anxiety inducing one cuz how everyone is now following Damien and obeying his every command and to me ,the scariest one mostly cuz the whole cult stuff and first time watching it as a kid, I genuinely thought he was going to win in the end . Also the mass baby killing scene always stuck with me .

It’s not a bad trilogy. A bit inconsistent, but I do like we got a journey for Damien from a child who might be evil to him becoming aware of his destiny in Part 2 to fully embracing his evil by the third film; plus Sam Neil makes the final film in the trilogy worth watching.
Never saw the 4th installment or TV show & let’s forget the 2006 “remake” exists cause they just copied Donner’s homework but made it worse; although having Mia Farrow as Mrs. Baylock was a nice touch considering she was the AntiChrist’s mother in a different film 😉

Sam Neill is iconic in general, and his performance as Damien in the third film is superb. But that said, I think the second film is my favorite of all. There's also a strange sort of feel from the aesthetics of it, which are often oddly cozy at times, or comfortable, even in places one wouldn't expect, like the academy Damien and his cousin attend. Of course there's an appeal of being a child of privilege with a fantastical and truly supernatural heritage, but this is one of a very few films that presents that with a tremendous weight and a ponderous destiny. This being shot when it was, too, contributed to the bleak but evocative tone it gradually adopted.
It is also one of the funniest movies to watch through the disgusted queen filter on snapchat, which is the one stupid thing I have to add. Bugenhagen is amazing.

Meant to leave a comment yesterday when I caught up watching this but I smiled so hard when I saw you were going to review this movie. Damien: Omen II is on my top 20 favorite Horror movie list. It's definitely in my top 5 Horror sequels and probably the only Omen movie I've seen the most of (besides the original 1976 film). I love setting up Damien as sympathetic with everyone else around him adding to his confusion and unsure of what's going on. I do wish we had a glimpse of seeing him before his teenage years following the first movie and while I do wish we got more focus on Damien and his friendship with his cousin, Mark and him at the military school, I do like this sequel better than half of other horror franchise sequels. And to me, this franchise has probably the least embarrassing history bc it stays in it's own lane without getting too insane: the 1976 original, the 1978 & 1981 sequels, a sequel TV movie (1991), the 2006 Remake, and the 2016 TV series called "Damien" (which only ran for 1 season; though the tv show is insanely fun and is it's own take on Damien's character. so check that out if you can/have time!).
I look forward to any/all Omen talk if you're going to continue doing these videos leading up to "The First Omen" coming out next month (I assume we are getting a "Final Conflict" review; and it is actually my favorite Sam Neil movie, not gonna lie). so I look forward to all future videos

I actually enjoyed all 3 of the omen movies. Not all in the sane way, but this one stuck with me. That scene of damien searching for a matk in the mirror was memorable. I also like how Damien wasn't a full on evil kid in this initially.

0:40- I take it that the First Blood Part II and Missing in Action III trailers were made by the same editor, according to those title cards.
When you talked about Omen 3, you mentioned than Sam Neil's Damien looks like Bruce Wayne. Well, in this movie, Damien looks like a young Christian Bale.
11:04- And this is also a better killer bird movie than Zombie 5: Killing Birds.
I knew you were gonna play that clip from The Dead Zone 2 seconds before you did.
14:45- I was waiting for a Pumpkinhead reference when Lance Henriksen showed up in the movie.
    16:11- 😂
16:53- You know, you've referenced Mannequin a lot on this show, it makes me wonder if you'll ever get to reviewing that and the sequel.

Honestly it’s not that bad a sequel. It does still pale in comparison to the first film, but I do like how Damien is portrayed here as he seems aware of what he is but struggles a bit with it. And his emotion over killing his cousin who was like a brother is kinda heartbreaking. Also nice they got Goldsmith to return for the score & of course who doesn’t love an early appearance from Lance Henricksen; the same year he also showed up in James Cameron’s wildly laughed at debut Desiree, Piranha II: the Spawning
