I loved how you pointed out the fact that the man who created a team to save the world was the one who triggered the events that’d lead to it’s destruction. I’d never considered the irony of that before
Which was pretty fitting when Diego threw shade at the old man just as apocalypse was happening; "If only Sir Reginald could see us right now huh? The Umbrella Academy"
I find it interesting that Diego still wears a mask like he's still that 13 year old in the school uniform saving hostages at the bank. He left his family but not the thrill.
This is so well-written, you deserve more attention. Also, “Luther in all his boundless wisdom, as the family’s number one, does this” You sounded like you were dying there. Don’t worry, we all feel that way with that particular decision.
One thing that i noticed from the opening sequence is that the song Vanya is playing is “Phantom of the Opera” from the musical of the same name. To me, that foreshadowed the feelings of inadequacy and pain that she felt throughout her life from her father’s abuse. The main theme of the song is to me is that sometimes our traumas hover over us for the rest of our lives, and you constantly feel them there reminding you of the feelings you often feel trapped in
I felt sorry for Vanya, because she was treated like the black sheep of the family just because she didn’t have any powers throughout her life (up till her powers manifested), she wasn’t allowed to help the others with the missions in their youth and they (minus #5) gave her shit for speaking out her feelings and “revealing secrets” in a book she written. Pogo and I think Number 5 showed genuine kindness towards her. Allison did show Vanya some compassion and kindness, but that was shoved to the wayside and acts like a complete asshole.
Even then her and Five, aren't normally together after episode 2, so there's an argument that he hasn't had the chance to be soulless to her. And sometimes there is relative kindness, where if people have been horrible to you, then comparatively someone not doing anything is nice, because it's preferable. Just a thought.
I feel like as kids, Vanya and Five were the closest. Vanya leaving the lights on and snacks for him as a teen hoping Five would come back. Or how Five just talks to her in general compared to the others. When Five first goes missing, the first name he calls out is Vanya’s name. When he went missing, Ben probably stepped up to help her. Ben treated her so nice in S2E8. He didn’t laugh at her at the table (Five didn’t either) but comforted her instead. Vanya remembers everything once she sees Ben, suggesting they did a lot together. When Ben died, Vanya was left alone. The ones that she had got on with the most had left her in ways that weren’t fully their faults (I don’t know how Ben died but Five did time travel against his dad’s words. In his defence, he was only a child and didn’t fully know what was going to happen) These 3 are/were the loneliest characters. Five was stuck in an apocalypse for 40+ years. Ben only had the companionship of Klaus, who ended up treating him horribly in series 2 as he lied to the others saying he wasn’t there. Vanya was left out of everything as a kid and still ended up feeling like a 2nd class citizen around most her siblings.
I like to think that Five and Vanya were close as kids, but after Five left, Vanya was either blamed for him leaving or the others left her out for other reasons. Same with Vanya and Ben. They. happen to be the two who left the earliest (either by choice or not) leading to her being left out for the rest of her time there, and even after she left.
Thank you for this I only wish it was longer ;) . That last episode was so painful to me. You could clearly see these moments where it felt like there was a line of light, where the siblings could choose a different path and changed Vanyas out come, and they consistently make the same choice (mostly driven by indoctrinated Luther) as their father did pushing her to become completely unstable. Its was also pretty chilling that after Alison loses her power Luther starts dismissing her, ignoring her wishes and plans (which we can imagine is exactly what was happening to Vanya as a child) and in the end for me there was this chilling realization that if it was any one of the brothers in Alisons place (who was only meant to be a distraction btw while the brothers tackle Vanya), they would've just killed Vanya.
I don’t listen to a lot of that music but my neighbor did so I just thought it was Bach. I should have known because my ex made me watch the 2000s phantom of the opera a few times.
That mournful song is phantom of the opera (violin arrangment made by lindsey stirling based off the hit musical phantom of the opera by sir andrew lloyd webber)
the best thing about this "superhero" show is that it's not really about superheroes or powers at all. yeah, they're a big part of the story, but something most superhero shows or movies lack is how the powers influence the character's LIVES and PERSONALITIES, not just their "heroic" actions. luther got deformed by his father, vanya was so powerful that hargreeves had to numb her with pills, allison is the human equivalent of imposter syndrome, klaus is an addict because of his ghost powers, five is extremely arrogant since his powers are technically the most useful, ben is literally DEAD and diego....... well idk about him but you get my point.
I watch a lot of videos but don't usually share them with other people. I'm definitely sharing yours just for the luther and his boundless wisdom line. My friends will absolutely get a kick out of it.
To be slightly fair to Luther Vanya did almost kill Allison. It still was the last thing he should have done but I can kind of see what he was thinking. He doesn't know what Vanya can do and she seems unstable having already near fatally wounded someone containing her until he could figure out what to do from there probably seemed like the best thing to do. Besides Luther's falling back on what he knows cause it's all he has. Luther's arguably the most stunted in his development out of all the siblings because he never left and is only now realizing the reality of his abuse.
I find luther boring but the apocalypse was not his fault. If Vanya had gone to the cops claiming she almost killed her sister, no matter how much she apologized she'd still be thrown in a cell and tried for assault.
Speedy and if not assault, attempted murder, however, if she went to the police willingly, and willingly got herself in prison the there's a possibility she might not have caused the end the of the world, whereas, Luther, smartest of all the smarties, decides to throw her in a prison where she can't breathe, without her knowledge or consent, thus driving her to breaking point, and she destroys the world. Whoops!
@@speedy2490 She wouldnt, because her sister didnt want her reported or facing any charges, not to mention Alison was fully aware what she did and why Vanya lashed out at her. Luther is a stunted boy that still thinks he knows best, and his ''best'' is what hes father would've done. I know hes just doing what he thinks is best, but its completely infuriating that the second Alison ''loses her power'' suddenly Luther and eventually the other brothers start treating her like a moron to be dismissed, ignored and used for their own plans. Its also pretty infuriating that he uses hes power to enforce this (most notably when Alison is determined to let her out), even tho his siblings are against it, and they are right, shes scared and wants help from them.
The Umbrella Academy, X-Men with daddy issues. Also, just saying the tune Vanya plays in the opening is Andrew Lloyd Webber's Phantom of the Opera. I don't know what this means... I think it has something to do with how the characters seem to be wearing masks to hide from their trauma as the story is an exploration of growing up and putting aside such an abusive childhood. She also plays Angel of Music and I believe Music of the Night/We're past the point of no return which is what the apocalypse plot is about.
My first impression was, after watching the first few episodes of Umbrella Academy, that Sir Reginald Hargreeves would have successfully won the proud title of "Worst Father of All Times" in verbal abuse category.
one things i disagree with is that diego has zero toxic masculinity traits like nothing he does has any connection to that. he called klaus a baby because he was frustrated by him not explaining himself.
Diego was definitely frustrated there, but he did still refer to Klaus as crying like a baby, which was invalidating Klaus' feelings, and painting crying in a negative way
I think you made some pretty good points in this video but I find the musics that you chose I bit distracting; I feel like they weren't really reenforcing the point you were making or highlighting correctly the scenes and images that you chose to showcase.
@@PointOfInformation No problem, I'd like to see what you put out in the future! I know it's hard to find some copyright free music to use. There's a website called "thematic" when you can find lots of music that you can use without paying any fees, just by crediting the artist.
I mean, she did cut Allison's neck and eventually cause the apocalypse. But I'm guessing what you mean is that she was driven to those things by her situation and the way people around her treated her
I do understand your point of view because I used to hold it. Toxic masculinity doesn't mean men being bad, or that being masculine is bad. It's the way society expects men to act a certain way (Be aggressive, not cry or show sadness, not ask for help), which tends to be internalised by many men, as usually happens for anyone with any societal belief or expectation aimed at them. If you want a parallel, I guess a good example might be internalised misogyny. It doesnt map on perfect, but it's passable. It's when a woman internalises harmful societal beliefs about women, which can be harmful to her, and she may impose that misogyny on other women
I've just realized vanya is playing a phantom of the opera medley at the beginning. It's perfect considering the isolation of all of them but especially vanya (and then mannequin wife)

Honestly Luther has done nothing but frustrate me through every installment. I can’t really stand how dumb he is.

Also it was cool as shite
Its the Lindsay Stirling version.

During the beginning alison was a ahole but after her troat incident she was the only one besides 5 who really cared about her
Her powers didn’t manifest she had them her whole life saying the manifested is saying she didnt get them till that certain day

I just realized, she is playing Phantom of the Opera. O_O how fitting for her storyline.
Is she actually playing Phantom of the Opera in the opening?
Sara Sleightholm been a while but I’m kind of sure it was bach
