I'd say the song is about stripping someone of their artistic inclinations and wants and needs in turn for a profit. Their thoughts, beliefs, etc. are inconsequential to the bottom line, so they just get pushed aside even when an artist reaches their breaking point. For example Kesha and Britney Spears.
