top marks for being considerate around the horse, good for everyone's safety including your own. I saw a horse ignore a steam train thundering past, then panic wildly seconds later at a falling leaf, no idea if the two were in any way related, but you do not want to be involved in any accident with a quarter to half ton animal, the horse rider will be injured, its a long way down, you will probably be injured, and we all need to work on the largely undeserved bad image motorcycles have, so bravo, also thank you for talking to me, rather than inflicting some horrid music, your opinions are appreciated, it's what I'm after, easy to find facts so please keep it up. well done
Thanks for the video. I bought a Bullet 500 about 6 months ago, have put just over 3000 miles on it, and would agree with your assesment. I strictly followed the break in advice and the maintenance schedule and the bike has performed excellently. Nothing has fallen off, and the vibrations have greatly improved, to the point where I was able to take it on a 500 mile round trip to Devon, much of which was spent cruising at 70mph. The only minor niggles I have are a loose headlight connection in the fuse box, which I'll get sorted at the next service, and the propensity of the bike to rust. You need to take great care to keep it clean and dry, and if you ride it in the rain or don't have a garage to store it in (I don't), then it really needs a coat of ACF-50. The Enfields are bikes that need breaking in properly and require proper maintenance and care; You can't just thrash them around like a more modern bike. But if you do take care of them they are reliable, economical, beautiful and a joy to ride!
I am picking up a brand new bullet 500 in July. I will be touring (mostly Wales and Scotland). How does the bike do at 60 - 65mph? I can't wait to pick mine up. Just need to pass my A2.
It performs quite well. There are vibrations, but if the bike is properly broken in they do subside quite a bit. It can handle dual carriageways and motorways, but really it's happiest on twisty roads and country lanes. My advice would be to follow the break in period and maintenance schedule specified in the manual, and the bike will mellow nicely over time.
Hi sir I own a KTM 390 duke and I broke in the bike hard! I'm planning to buy this Classic 500 and sell the 390, can I break in the bike hard like a ktm?
I bought one of these bullets love it its because of people like you that take the time to educate people about a particular subject motorcycles, so l bought one thank you sir cheers from Australia
Hi Sean, I have a couple of videos I've made that need editing and uploading. One is a 2 hour journey to the Stafford Classic Bike Show. Don't worry I'll cut it down but it shows how the bike performs on the M1 at motorway speeds and also the effect of putting a screen on. The other was me testing the GoPro Hero 4, not the latest Go Pro but a big improvement on the Sena Prism Tube (which isn't bad). Hopefully get those up soon. Thanks for your interest.
Wonderful tour of prlme English countryside, greenlanes on a charming motorcycle with adequate performance that refuses to be hurried. Adjust to its pace and you'll have an enjoyable experience. Thank you.
Thanks Andrew, I've moved house recently but still get to travel along that stretch of road each day to the office. Even in the winter, it's still beautiful.
Thanks for sharing, nice video and nice bike, hopefully I'll get one in a year or two. And good to know Rutland doesn't have a McDonald's, sounds like a good reason to visit.
A very small percentage of motor bike "vlogs"are worth watching. You are definitely among that small percentage. Good interesting video and informative sensible dialogue.
Hi, the more miles the smoother and better it will get. Unlike all other manufacturers who run in their engines prior to assembly, Royal Enfield don't. The customer has to do that (Just like all vehicles had to be 50 odd years ago). I rode her to the Isle of Mull and back this summer, over 1,000 miles cruising at 70mph on the motorways quite happily.
Absolutely superb series of video's so far Mark. Thank you so much for taking the time to record & upload for us. I'm going for a test ride at Watford RE tomorrow. I'm looking @ a Classic 500. All the best (ATB) Alan.
Alan thank you for taking the time to comment. I've got some other videos that need editing and uploading. I rode the bike from Rutland where we live to the Isle of Mull, almost 500 miles. My wife went in her Mini and we loved it so much, we booked another week. Owner of the lodge we hired suggested leaving the bike and riding it back next visit, which starts today. So I'll do some more videoing on Mull.
Good Lord ! The Isle of Mull ! That's where I'm originally from - Tobermory. That's a long old ride, however, I suspect the RE coped admirably. They do seem to be good old workhorses. Would you be good enough to run me through the process of the personalized black & silver plate please ? I'd love one but I didn't think it was possible. ATB Alan
good on you for your courtesy to the horse, no telling what will spook them or not, your behavior helps the image of all motorcyclists, thank you, we get quite enough bad press
I'm enjoying your videos very much. I bought a Himalayan last year and I just got a Classic 500 last week. I love them both, but I'm really looking forward to seeing them mature as I put on more miles.
Hi Mark, thanks for the compliment. I need to put up some more up. I hope you enjoy the Classic. My intention is to get out on mine more this year. The Interceptor over shaddowed it last year.
Now you’ve got 452 subscribers! Great video mate! I’m getting my Enfield 500 Pegasus in 10 days, and it’s going to be my third Enfield Bullet since the 60s. Thanks again!
Mark Buckmaster Hi Mark. I’ve just done 500 miles on the Pegasus and I love it to bits. My other bike is a 1984 Harley Ironhead, and I’m not getting rid of either, ever 😈 PS: my accent is just the same as yours so tell me who I contact for the local bike club (London born London bred; strong in the arm, thick in the head!)
Hi Johnny, I was born in Hitchin, Herts and brought up mainly in Stevenage. I now live in Rutland. I bought mine at Cooperb's in Bozeat near Wellingborough, Northants. They have a thriving club. Glad you're enjoying the Pegasus. In August I did 1,000 + mile round trip to the Isle of Mull. Bike went a dream and I averaged almost 90 mpg, while cruising between 60 and 70. Funnily enough I've got a Harley too. A Roadking Classic. She's been off the road for 9 years but is now in my local dealers being serviced and Mot'd. She started after 3 turns of the engine having not been started for over 2 years. I'm going to keep her too. Wife and I are off to India in the morning and plan to visit RE factory in Chennai. All the best.
Love the videos, a bit of class. Ran my bullet in and is well worth it, as we say you never have a chance to get those miles back and makes for a sweet engine.
Thanks John for your kind comment. I did a new one today but the camera switched off just a few minutes into the ride. Weather permitting I'll try again in the morning. Going to do one with a pillion (my daughter) on and going to switch helmets half way through and she will do a commentary from the back. Will do one on the 500 Classic Chrome and then another on the new 650 Interceptor.
Nice part of the world, and lovely bike! I'm off down the local to dealers tomorrow to hopefully buy the very same bike, I like the nice touches you have done to your one, it's looking really nice! Well done Sir!
Got down the dealers this morning to find out they had sold the chrome one late the night before, but I got my self a squadron blue/cream euro 3 one brand new (had been registered to the shop but 0 miles) no ABS model (which is what I wanted) the last euro 3 in the shop. I spent half hour beating the sales man up and got it for a thousand under list! So worth the trip down! Gotta wait a week or so to pick it up.....some sleepless nights ahead I guess! I'll let you know what I think when I get her under my wing! Keep up the good work buddy!
rollingthunder45 that's a good deal, well done. My bike's up on the Isle of Mull. I rode up there following the wife in her Mini Convertible. Pleased as punch with the bike. Cruising at 70 on the motorways and 60 on the sweeping roads along Loch Lomond, just left her in top gear and let the torque do the rest. Ended up averaging nearly 90 mpg. Anyhow loved the lodge we hired at the end of the pier at Salen that we booked a second week starting 11th August. Owner suggested leaving the bike in his garage and then ride it back at the end of the second week. So that's where she is. Gives me another week riding around Mull and then home. The ride up there was almost 500 miles. I've taken some video and will edit and upload soon. 😀
Mark, without any shadow of a doubt, your Channel is by far the best that I subscribe to on TH-cam. Your whole manner & bearing is so balanced & laid back. "What you hear / see is what you get" . . . . HOWEVER, can we please, please, please have some more ?!! Even if it's just the daily commute with your thoughts of the day 👍 I pick my "Pegasus" up next week. Soooooo excited !! 👍👍👍 All the best, Alan :)
What a nice review! You have just about sealed my fate, I've been admiring a Classic 500 in Redditch Red for a few weeks now, after watching your review I feel it's time to get to know her better and talk some prices with the dealer. I was amazed by the weight saving of the muffler and the fuel economy, that's modern 250 cc numbers. Regards Ray
Hi Ray, I'm pleased you like the review. When you book a test ride, try and get a ride on one has a few miles under it's wheels, as they do improve with mileage. Remember although it has been modernised over the years, it's still essentially a bike from the 50's. I hope you enjoy the experience.
Hi Rabrinda, I'm very lucky where I live, it's very beautiful and peaceful. Many people think England is cold, wet and dreary but it's not. We have rain of course and that's why it's green but we have lots of sunny weather too. Being an island the weather changes very quickly but if you ever get a chance to visit please do and try to venture further than London.
Hi Mark, I'm a Brit living in Southern Germany and have just bought a Bullet, I liked your comment about the guy visiting England and not just London!! Most of the Germans I know have said they've been to England (London), my answer is always the same, London isn't England!!!
There is certainly more to England and that matter to the British Isles than London. Funny just reread my comment to him, it's ironic that it hasn't stopped raining here ever since the snow snow went. Got out on the bike for the first time this year last Saturday. We have a house in France and I plan to take the Classic over there this Spring, so that should put some miles under its wheels. Thanks for commenting, and I hope you enjoy the videos. Auf Wiedersehen
When i was a teenager i wish when i grow up and buy bullet... And i did i saved money an now i have bought 500cc classic chrome same as yours sir but its red colour..... And now again i wish to buy one more but old model..😀😀I liked more old bullet because of the killer exhaust sound...
Another great review Mark, I’m 377 miles in on my classic chrome and enjoying every minute of it.As you said lots of horror stories about bits falling off but so far I’ve only lost a back nut from the front mudguard so no real drama there. I have to say your dealer seems more flexible than mine, I was told any home maintenance including performance upgrades to the exhaust would invalidate my warranty.
Hi Andrew, my dealer is Cooperbs in Bozeat near Wellingborough, Northants and they are very good. They've thrown themselves into Royal Enfield and have a thriving club organising ride outs every week, even ones as far as Scotland. Check out their website and Everything Enfield on Facebook. I had no issues about the exhaust and they happily fixed the oil leak under warranty. I'm glad you're enjoying your bike, you will find it improves as you do more miles.
The one of the things my supplying dealer advised me was to keep checking the front mudguard bolts, they reckon once they have been tightened a couple of times they will not move anymore.
Literally on the weekend I noticed one of the front guard bolts was missing! I have gone for the cheap fix and bought a packet that match from the nearest hardware store. Problem solved!
Thanks Daniel, I really hope you enjoy it. You are at least the fourth person who has bought one after watching my videos. I really need to do a deal with RE. 😀
A smart looking bike with some nice extras. These appeal to a lot of people nowadays. I live fairly close to Cooperb so keep an eye open for interesting used bikes. I fear I might be too late to get a ride on one of these now.
Joe it’s a solid mounted single cylinder with no counterbalance shaft. The vibes decrease as the engine gets further mileage on it. Mine’s close to 40,000km and I find the vibes under 70km/h are fine, part of the charm. At 80 it’s bad but nothing horrible. At 90 to 100km/h it comes good again. But the thing with these bikes is that they are all different. Best thing to do is test ride one for yourself and see. If you’re buying new, the run in procedure is important. And check every major nut and bolt after each ride. Loctite and nyloc nuts are your best friend.
Hi mark, found your channel a couple of days ago and have just caught up on all your videos. Very enjoyable, you have a nice laid back and relaxing style. Nice to get a look around the bike in this one, it looks great and sounds gorgeous. I passed my test in 79 and like you have had a range of different bikes over the years but find myself being drawn to something like the Enfield. Think I'll have to get myself a test ride booked soon! Keep up the good work and I'll be looking forward to the next video, you have a new subscriber. All the best, barry
Mark lovely bike pal. I have the 500 efi bullet 16 plate with a megaphone silencer. Often ride from Birmingham to Peterborough. Will have to arrange a coffee
Simply a great bike for the backroads at a leisurely pace; what 500cc single cylinder bikes were made for in the first place. The bike has character. Not everyone wants to risk their motorcycle license (and car license) on overpowered uncomfortable road rockets.
Now is the time to start using a few more revs to fully bed the engine in and reduce high rev vibrations. Gradually use more revs up through the gears and let the reins out in 3rd and 4th. The rev limiter is about 5500 but the actual blood line is probably 6800, you won't over rev it. The motor will come to rev more freely and produce more power, which will make passing a doddle. You describe the performance as leisurely but it doesn't have to be lethargic. It's no crotch rocket but we do have a little more torque than a CB500R.
Hi Kevin, good question. I've just checked and there is no legal requirement to have mirrors on a motorcycle. So you can have none, one or two. We all know that we shouldn't rely on mirrors and the importance of the lifesaver look. It's still a requirement in the motorcycle practical test to look behind when changing lanes, pulling away etc.
Hi followed your progress from the Green Army look a like up till now and I am impressed I have 2008 Royal Enfield 350 Bullet cast iron pre unit which I love to ride but I find it a bit under powered on modern roads and have been humming and arring ? About getting a 500 like yours I have seen on TH-cam some horror stories about them but you have convinced me that the bike is ok so I am Going to book a test ride and if I like the seat positioning and hopefully more power I will get one Iam sure I should see a difference between 18hp on the three fifty and 27hp on the newer five hundred by the way I like the sound of the new exaust I have just subscribed to your channel to see how you get on ATB Geoff
Hi Geoff, thanks for subscribing. When you organise a demo, see if you can get one with a couple of thousand miles on the clock, as the performance definitely improves with the mileage. Regards Mark
I had an old Redditch 350 which was slower than a Bantam. The 500 is a completely different animal With proper british maintenance shouldn't have any problems, prolly a lot better than the BMW 40% fail rate.
I have had both, the injected one i have now, i have done 11000 miles now, i did have a prob with a relay and changed the plug cap but apart from that it has been fine. Power is better but i tend to keep it at 60 max because they still vibe a bit, but it will do 75 happily if you don,t mind pushing it. The throttle response is better, but you will find it much better than a 350! Also there was a conti gt for sale with 65k on it so no worries mate.
Hi Mark, nice video, thank you. Do you still own the bike? How you getting on with it now? And are you able to list, with links, the accessories (mods) you have added to your description. Thanks again.
Hi Steve, Glad you enjoyed the video. Yes, I still own her but must admit, rode the 650 Interceptor most of the time last year. But will get back out on the Classic this year. Plan on another visit to the Isle of Mull and perhaps France. These are the main accessories I've put on: Silencer: www.feked.com/royal-enfield-bullet-500-efi-new-model-type-2-silencer.html Mirror: www.classicbikeshop.co.uk/chrome-handlebar-end-mirror.html Saddlebags: accessories.hitchcocksmotorcycles.com/accessory-shop/Leather-Pannier-Bag-Small/11764 Headlamp peak: accessories.hitchcocksmotorcycles.com/27404 Indicator peak: accessories.hitchcocksmotorcycles.com/accessory-shop/Indicators-Lighting/33175
Just wondering, Mr. Buckmaster, about the possibility tuning the ecm of the Bullet. Does the RE aftermarket support the Bullet enthusiast that is so inclined?
Thanks for the video mark, I'am at 260 miles on mine at the moment. Can you help out by stating which of the Feked exhausts it was that you got, there are 2 or 3 for the classic, and also did you fit an aftermarket air filter. best wishes.
Hi Mark, good review. Having just bought a c5 classic I find with my riding stance the mirrors are not very good. What make of bar end mirror are you using and how is the attachment made to the handlebar end?
Hi, these are the mirrors I bought www.classicbikeshop.co.uk/chrome-handlebar-end-mirrors-pair.html. You will find that if you remove the bar ends they will just screw in. I found you only need one mirror and sold the other to a friend. The mirrors are interchangeable, so will fit either the left or right-hand side. Hope that helps.
Thanks for the info on the mirrors,I`m also thinking of changing the gear lever to a heel and toe pedal, there is not a lot of room for my size 12 boots for upward gear changes.
Hi, sorry but pretty sure you should have a yellow and black number plate and a reflector on the back. Could be legal/road worthy/insurance issues? Please check on line for DVLA numberplate requirements.
Must be so frustrating to have had a heavy exhaust pipe that restricts the performance of the bike. Bike has a lot of charm and character - you have added some nice touches. I've had 3.4 litre per 100 out of my CB500F 2018 model. It does what I want it to as a commuter, highway day trip bike.
Hi mate, Great vid of your bike. I have just ordered one of the last official imports of the Bullet classic tribute. Very interested in your mods. can you provide me with links to them when you get time please. cheers
After its warmed up.. Does it have a rattly tappet noise?? Mine has developed a loud rattle and its only done 600km so far.. It hasnt had its first service yet though.
Hi Rick, it's just the silencer and is a direct replacement without any fuel adjustments. www.feked.com/royal-enfield-bullet-500-efi-new-model-type-2-silencer.html
Hi Mark, great vids. I have a Classic Chrome in black on order and have a couple of questions on your leather bags that I'd like to put on which look very nice, apologies if this has been asked before. Were they from Hitchcocks and if so are they the larger or smaller ones? Also, do the mounting straps damage the paintwork on the rails to which they are attached, over time? Thanks
No problem, I ordered these from Hitchcocks. The links below are for burgundy and black. The price quoted is £50+VAT each. So I ordered 2 and was sent two pairswww.royalenfieldspares.com/special-offers/accessories-special-offers/USEDCOPY_113www.royalenfieldspares.com/special-offers/accessories-special-offers/SPECIAL92885
Unfortunately the straps do wear off the paint on the rails. I guess you could protect the rails by wrapping some tape round before strapping the saddle bags on.
Thanks. Those bags are what Hitchcocks call small, part number 92885 or 92886 for black or burgundy. They look nice but I'm concerned about the paint damage to the rails so before I decide on them I'll think about how to protect the rails. Despite how good they look, I doubt I'll want them if paint damage is unavoidable. I'm not sure that tape is the answer because that is itself likely to damage the paint if left on for a long time then peeled off. A better idea might be foam rubber pipe insulation of the appropriate diameter, something like this: www.pipelagging.com/pipe-insulation-06mm-bore-6mm-wall-x-2m-class-o-armaflex-tube#.WfHd72hSxPY but again I'm not sure if after some time the material won't break down into a sticky mess that adheres to the paint and causes damage if you remove it, especially considering that there will always be some tension on the insulation pressing it down on to the rails from tightening the straps.
Hi Mark, I`m wondering since you changed the silencer does that effect the ECU, ie might the Lambda sending signal be different now you have taken the Cat silencer off.
Hi Rob,I haven't had any detrimental results from changing the silencer. It was purchased from Feked which is a British manufacture and is compatible with the standard ECU mapping. Bear in mind that catalytic converter is in the downpipe and not the silencer and I haven't replaced that.
Thanks for the information. have to say changing the silencer is almost the first job everyone does, I personally think the shorter silencer looks better and certainly sounds a bit more like my 1954 bullet.
Hi Mark, hope you are well, I know you have answered many questions about your exhaust, but I wondered if you could help.I have a 2017 Classic 500 and have just bought the same from Feked and I’m having a nightmare fitting it! I ordered the same reducing kit as you but I cannot get the silencer onto the down pipe, how did you manage it. Regards, Andy.
Hi Andrew, I'm sorry you're having a problem. I'm on holiday at the moment but when I get home, I'll remove the heat shield and take some photos. I don't remember having any problems with getting the silencer onto the downpipe. I can't remember whether the downpipe had a larger diameter or whether it was the silencer with the larger diameter. But which ever it was I slid one into the other and then tapped two of the shims in and then tightened up the clamp. The main problem I had, was that the hole in the bracket which connected to the pillion footrest was too small and needed drilling out a bit more.
Hi Mark, hope your enjoying your holiday, problem solved, Feked had supplied the wrong bushes! The silencer is now on and looks and sounds great.Merry Christmas to you and yours and looking forward to more videos in the new year.
Hi Andrew, glad you got it sorted. Got home from Singapore yesterday and a bit jet lagged. Will have to wait until weather improves before I do another video. The next one will feature my daughter on pillion, to see how it handles two up and then we'll swap crash helmets and she can comment from the pillion perspective.
i have just bought a Reddich red one ...and so far i am loving it all the controls are so smooth and its so easy to ride nearly run in now as i find any excuse to just pop out on it ....been thinking of changing my exhaust now having seen and heard Marks great reviews i will now get one
hi wiily.thanks love the bike just past1260 miles so far.change oil at 1000ml .change the mirrors to one bar end one problem so farthe engin e mounting the one that goes through the engine shear.d off waiting fr new bolt.get pleny of good coments.pity the winter is near also taken off rear seat..think it looks better..
Hi Mark. Great video. I'm interested in purchasing a Royal Enfield classic. I have no concerns about doing a bit of wrenching on and older style bike, I enjoy it in fact. The one concern I do have is that I want to use the bike for commuting to work as well as leisure. I need to be able to cruise at 65 mpg comfortably. All I hear about is the vibration issue. Is it an issue? I am a Harley rider....can it be worse than that? Has reliability been and issue at all? Thanks for your feedback. David
Hi David, I think you mean 65 mph (you should get more than 65 mpg). I think it rather depends on what roads you use for your commute. Going on motorways won't be very enjoyable, but you shouldn't have a problem with A roads. 65 mph is getting towards its maximum cruising speed but vibration isn't too bad. I have a Harley too (Roadking) which doesn't vibrate much, but if you ride an older Sportster, the vibration of the Royal Enfield is no worse. Best thing to do is take a test ride and see what you think. Try and get a ride on one that has done a decent number of miles, as the vibration does reduce as you get more miles under the wheels. I hope this helps. I must admit, I'm rather looking forward to getting my hands on the new 650 twin though. I'm not planning on chopping in the 500 for one (I have a Moto Guzzi V7 750 for that).
Mark Buckmaster Thanks for the info Mark. I did mean mph... I currently own a yamaha 1100 classic (customized like crazy), an Iron head sportster, and an older yamaha enduro. Never get rid of a motorcycle you already own! Lol Just keep adding to the stable. Ill be test riding a Classic Chrome 500 in the next few weeks. Who knows, I may add one more. Enjoy the ride and stay safe. David
Hi Mark love the videos i have just got one and i echo everything youve said ....did you just buy the silencer or all the system please as yours sounds so much better than the standard one ....cheers willy
Hi Willy, I bought just the silencer from Feked.com You'll need the following parts:www.feked.com/royal-enfield-bullet-500-efi-new-model-type-2-silencer.htmlwww.feked.com/exhaust-clamp-chrome.htmlwww.feked.com/exhaust-reducing-bush-set-of-3.htmlWhen I removed the original silencer, it exposes a rather ugly lug, which I covered with a heat shieldwww.classicbikeshop.co.uk/exhaust-heat-shield-chrome-7-inch.htmlThe silencer will slip onto the end of the exhaust pipe but you will need two of the spacers as the diameter of the pipes are different. The only other thing I found was that the hole in the bracket which lines up the passenger footrest is slightly too small and needs drilling out a little.I've done 3 short videos on the difference between the original silencer and the replacement, if you check out my channel.I'm pleased you enjoy the videos.Mark
Well a big thank you mark i fitted all the bits you mentioned and not only does it sound lots better its lighter and it goes so much better .....thanks once again
Hi Willy, I'm pleased to have been of help. Enjoy the new sound. On my way to work I go over a narrow bridge and love the sound as it bounces off the walls!
I heard there was a kill switch in the kick stand. Did you disable that on yours? Sounded like it was still running when you did the walk around. Also heard the brakes needed maintenance rather often. That seem true?
Hi Jay, yes I had seen that on reviews of the previous model but the euro4 model does run with its side stand down and I haven't disabled it. However, if you put it into gear with the side stand down the engine will cut out. I had a few frustrating moments when I just wanted to put her in the garage and the engine kept cutting out until I realised I still had the side stand down. Flipped it up and away we went. Apart from the scheduled maintenance, the brakes don't need anything special. In fact, the brakes have got better as time has gone on.
Mark Buckmaster thanks. That's good to know. I now have a 12 minute commute through the back woods of Texas and was looking for something fun to drive on the odd days I'm not driving someone else. I grew up in the "back seat" of an Austin Healey, so any rough ride shouldn't bother me that much. Just want something reliable but fun.
This reply is probably too late now. I personally found it impractical to keep exactly to the recommended run in speeds. From memory I kept it below 50 mph (80 kph) for the first 500 km and then gradually increased the speed after that.
I enjoyed your video & like some of your modifications, but the number plate is definitely illegal. My Classic Chrome has only done 400 miles & I can't wait for it to be run in.
Hi Lance, you'll find a lot of Royal Enfields and Harley Davidsons in the UK are fitted with not exactly the correct number plate style. The police generally overlook it, unless you're guilty of an additional more serious motoring offence. I've been riding with an incorrect number plate on my Harley Davidson for 16 years and have never had a problem, even when riding with police motorcyclists in organised events. It's a calculated risk and I am in no way recommending that anyone should change their own number plate. But thank you for your kind comments about the video and you will enjoy the bike more and more as the miles pile on.
I had a black and silver number plate on my Vespa PX150, similar performance as the Enfield, perfectly legible but illegal. Looks nice on these old style bikes.
Hi Chris, I personally would avoid motorways for any long distance. It would maintain 70 but you would be approaching it's maximum cruising speed, in addition it's a small light bike and I'd feel rather exposed and vulnerable. I haven't had a pillion on yet, although my daughter says she'd like to have a ride on the back. I'll report back on that.
I take mine along the motorway if I have to. Note, if I must, as riding any bike on motorway is boring. One of the things about a big single is they will maintain top speed for hours, one of the reasons they raced them is they can stay up near maximum revs. The rev limiter is 5400-5500rpm but back of envelope max piston speed is something like 6800rpm, otoh built as an actual race engine they might go 9800-1000rpm. Which means it can cruise at about 80mph with a little bit to spare. 5000rpm with stock gearing is 83mph which RE give as top speed and most stock motors won't pull over that. Mine is tuned and will pull to 6000rpm (been there) which is quite fast. I'm 17-stone and my wife ain't sayin' - it can carry a pillion. There's a bit of a trick to riding this bike (or any other really) at speed and that is not to hang on tight to the bars or the bike will weave about and try to swap lanes passing a lorry. Lean forwards but only with a guiding touch on the bars. Now the bike can tip and the steering adjust to stay in a straight line, if the bars are held stiff the bike will go into a turn as it is pushed over.
my good lady hated the pillion pad ...but we have now made a bigger pad out of foam rubber and she now loves riding pillion ......had to do two trips on the A 14 now its nearly run it was ok but i would not want to do it regularly
How do you get by with the black and silver number plate with mot and police. I take it that, like you, buying a personalised registration and converting to old school plate doesn't get you noticed by the plod.
The bike doesn't need an Mot for 2 years yet. I'll just put black and yellow one on it for the test. Police don't seem interested. I've had a not so legal plate on my Harley for 17 years, never got stopped, even when riding with police motorcyclists.
@@MarkESBuckmaster Thanks. I will consider getting a personalised number and go black and silver as it looks so much more in keeping with the bike. I've seen a couple for 170 quid that would be good for me. I take it that there will be some other charges involved as far as the dvla are concerned.
I would go directly to the DVLA dvlaregistrations.dvla.gov.uk The prices are inclusive, other sites add VAT and £80 assignment fee. So that £170 may well become £284 (no VAT on assignment fee), my registration cost £250 inclusive. I've now got R60 ENF on my Interceptor, although I've not put it on a black and silver plate, as it looks just fine as it is.
Hi John, thanks for the comment. The gloves are Spada Freeride. They are extremely comfortable, I've got them in both black and tan and cost around £35. There's a new version out for 2018 and it looks as if the cuff a little longer. Although the reason I chose them was because I didn't want a large cuff. But the new ones don't look as if they are too large. I've just completed a 500 mile ride to the Isle of Mull. Bike went brilliantly but I'm definitely going to invest in a gel seat pad!
Hi Vim, the panniers are quite small with internal dimensions of w95mm x h270mm x l280mm. This equates to 7.182 cu litres. I've heard that bikes will be available to test in the US on 2nd September, not sure for anywhere else. I have put a deposit down for one, but it's subject to a test ride. But hopefully I will be purchasing one.
Thank you for the review, as a beginner the Royal Enfield definitely catch my eyes of classic of the 30’s era. My question is how does the chrome stand out as I love the look of chrome but worry the quality finish of chrome due to rust. Thank you #Vancouverfilmmaker
Hi Wayne, The chrome is good quality and provided you keep the bike clean is rust free. Particular attention needs to be kept on the wheel rims, as water can stand after it has rained, so you want to make sure you just wipe around the bottom of the rim before garaging it.
Hi Sean, the vibrations reduce as you put more miles on. Having said that they still do vibrate a bit, but I did a 2 hour journey a couple of weeks ago at around 70 mph and it was ok. Just depends on what you're used to.
Mark Buckmaster good to know! I have an AJS Tempest roadster. (125. Great little bike.) 6months now, ride it everyday no matter the weather (#Scotland 😑). As much as I love my Tempest.... I seen the RE Classic 500 euro 4 in a shop window a couple of days ago, instantly fell in love. Started researching now but not heard a lot about the new euro 4 vibrations as yet so thank you and lovely bike btw! Like what you've did with exhaust.
I particularly like the AJS Cadwell in black, looks very smart. I believe the main difference with the Euro 4 model, is that there is a disc brake at the back and ABS. So in terms of vibration shouldn't be any different to the previous model. The thing to remember with the Royal Enfield's is that the engines are not run in at the factory, that's your job. So new bikes, that have perhaps been road tested and then reviewed vibrate a lot, only later do the vibrations reduce and then it depends on how they have been run in. I took the advice and once over the first 1,000 miles would hold her open in 3rd and 4th gear up to the rev limiter for short period of times. I'm pretty pleased with her now, sure she still vibrates but that's part of the character. My advice is, have a test ride on a model with a few miles under its wheels and see what you think. Everyone is different, for some the vibration is acceptable for other's it's not.
Hi Mark, great reviews, I have just bought a Green Chrome Bullet today, I also have a 1954 350cc Bullet. was wondering about your number plate, well more about the colour, can you enlighten please.
Hi Rob, It would be interesting to hear your comments about the comparison with your new Bullet and your 1954 350. You can get custom number plates on eBay. I used ej-parts. These plates aren't legal, so I can't recommend them, but in my experience, the police overlook them, unless you've committed a far more serious motoring offence. Thanks for the kind comments on the reviews and enjoy your new bike, lets hope the weather improves soon.
Morning Mark, sorry for the let reply, have just had a knee op so have been busy with physio etc. I don`t pick my new Enfield up until March so will let you know how I get on with the new machine then.
Hi Mark, Well I now have my new Chrome Bullet, first impressions are good, can`t believe it came with a tin of Spray paint when most of the bike is Chrome. I do have a question for you which I trust you can help me with, like yourself I have removed the mirrors and fitted bar ends ones, I need to get some blanking bolts to replace the missing bars, where did you get yours from? here in Chester I`m having no luck so would appreciate your assistance. Cheers Rob.
HI Rob, I got them from Hitchcocks part number 92584. They were £6.10 a pair plus VAT plus p&p. Frustrating weather to have delivery of a new bike. Hope you enjoy.
Excellent thanks for that, now ordered, have to say I have copied some of your extras, ie, headlight & indicator shrouds, silencer from Fek'ed though I have removed the rear foot pegs and rear seat and fitted a Garmin 395lm Sat Nav. plus fitted a charging cable for my Opti-mate trickle charger. The weather is certainly damping ones enthusiasm, still I can get it ready for when the better weather arrives. Thanks for your help, much appreciated.
The best thing you can do is get a test ride on a 500 Classic and see if you like it. The Duke 390 is a lot more modern with more power and higher performance. It all rather depends what your priorities are. They are very different bikes. I hope that helps.
top marks for being considerate around the horse, good for everyone's safety including your own.
@@conwako Have you looked into the Carberry Vibration Reduction Plate? It is amazing. Have a look th-cam.com/video/SLnhYPl3_Cs/w-d-xo.html -Madd Man

Hi, thanks for your kind comments and I hope you continue to love your bike!
Nice! I love my Classic 500 (11,500 miles since April 2015) and the sort of roads you ride are just made for the Enfield. Happy days!
I hope you keep the videos coming. I'm on the verge of buying a classic 500. Always good to view informative videos from everyday users.
You are living in a beautiful place
What a gent to put the clutch in passing that horse. Best part of the video.
Thanks Liam, we have a lot of horses round here and I do the same whether I'm on the bike or in the car, I also turn down the music.
Lovely video watched a couple of yours now starting to get interested in classic bikes 👍
Thanks for sharing, nice video and nice bike, hopefully I'll get one in a year or two. And good to know Rutland doesn't have a McDonald's, sounds like a good reason to visit.
Dear Mark I also have a bullet 350 and love my motorcycle the ergonomics, the riding posture and the sound and have given a name Metal Horse.
A very small percentage of motor bike "vlogs"are worth watching. You are definitely among that small percentage. Good interesting video and informative sensible dialogue.
Thanks Jim, that's very kind of you. I do try and think about what I'm going say and when, but I do have the occasional mind block.
Thanks for your overview. I have less than 20 miles on mine. Good to see what I have to look forward to after another 1,280 miles!
ATB Alan
This is a very nice looking bike. Smooth mods !!
Thank you very much!
good on you for your courtesy to the horse, no telling what will spook them or not, your behavior helps the image of all motorcyclists, thank you, we get quite enough bad press
Hi Johnny, thanks for subscribing and your kind comments. I hope you enjoy the Pegasus. Mark
Thanks very much for your kind comments. Enjoy the bike, let me know how you got on.
It's very beautiful country side with a good motorcycle, superb
Mark, without any shadow of a doubt, your Channel is by far the best that I subscribe to on TH-cam. Your whole manner & bearing is so balanced & laid back.
Regards
Ray
Hi Ray, I'm pleased you like the review. When you book a test ride, try and get a ride on one has a few miles under it's wheels, as they do improve with mileage. Remember although it has been modernised over the years, it's still essentially a bike from the 50's. I hope you enjoy the experience.
Nice review and what a beautiful place you are living in. I wish I could be there.
Sorry Rabindra spelt your name wrong.
Great video.. I am a proud owner of royal Enfield classic 350cc signals edition..✌️
Just popped outside and checked mine. All ok!
Literally on the weekend I noticed one of the front guard bolts was missing! I have gone for the cheap fix and bought a packet that match from the nearest hardware store. Problem solved!
Use locktite on nothing will need tightening.
Hi Mark - you need a commission from Royal Enfield! Your videos inspired me to get a chrome Classic 500 - pick it up tomorrow! Safe riding!

Do they vibrate badly?
@@djomkar1683 hmmm...low speeds to under 50mph?
@@whatsstefon cool..thanks for the input.
Hi mark, found your channel a couple of days ago and have just caught up on all your videos. Very enjoyable, you have a nice laid back and relaxing style. Nice to get a look around the bike in this one, it looks great and sounds gorgeous. I passed my test in 79 and like you have had a range of different bikes over the years but find myself being drawn to something like the Enfield. they look good, they ride good, and by golly, they do you good!
A heel toe shifter! That sounds like a great idea for a bike like this! I didn't know it was an option!
It's not a Royal Enfield option but a universal one off EBay. But it does a good job.

Beautiful motorcycle. Thanks for a nice video.
Majowa Thanks very much.
Simply a great bike for the backroads at a leisurely pace; what 500cc single cylinder bikes were made for in the first place. The bike has character. Not everyone wants to risk their motorcycle license (and car license) on overpowered uncomfortable road rockets.
I couldn't agree more.
Hi Jeff, thanks, I've started to do this, as I've heard about it elsewhere. I'll report on how it goes in a later video. Mark
Nice bike and good colour

Hi Mark, love your R.E. videos. Had mine for 6 months now & love it. Is having only one mirror legal/insurance problem?
Hi Kevin, good question. I've just checked and there is no legal requirement to have mirrors on a motorcycle. So you can have none, one or two. We all know that we shouldn't rely on mirrors and the importance of the lifesaver look. It's still a requirement in the motorcycle practical test to look behind when changing lanes, pulling away etc.
Love the view love the bike, greetings from Indonesia
The 500 is a completely different animal
With proper british maintenance shouldn't have any problems, prolly a lot better than the BMW 40% fail rate.
A beautiful bike indeed!
Thank you.
Lovely ride on a classic bike. I’ve always liked the look of classic British singles but I want something more reliable than a 60 year old bike.

Very nice Bike!!!
Just wondering, Mr. Buckmaster, about the possibility tuning the ecm of the Bullet. Does the RE aftermarket support the Bullet enthusiast that is so inclined?
I bet you enjoy that commute to and from work!
Yes, Tony, I do. It's a great way to start and finish the day. The village of Ashley where my office is beautiful too. I count my blessings each day.
Hi. Really enjoyed the video. 👍 Can I ask what is the exact exhaust you have on it and did you replace the lot, or just the silencer? Many thanks.
Hi Rick, it's just the silencer and is a direct replacement without any fuel adjustments.

A better idea might be foam rubber pipe insulation of the appropriate diameter, something like this:
www.pipelagging.com/pipe-insulation-06mm-bore-6mm-wall-x-2m-class-o-armaflex-tube#.WfHd72hSxPY
but again I'm not sure if after some time the material won't break down into a sticky mess that adheres to the paint and causes damage if you remove it, especially considering that there will always be some tension on the insulation pressing it down on to the rails from tightening the straps.
A great and very interesting review.
Thanks Don, I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Hi Mark,
I`m wondering since you changed the silencer does that effect the ECU, ie might the Lambda sending signal be different now you have taken the Cat silencer off.
Regards,
Andy.

Mark Buckmaster
Thanks for the info Mark.
Hi Jay, the Royal Enfield should the bill. The quality is good and comes with a 2 year warranty.
how did you do the run in? did you really stick to the 60 kph limit first 500km? In 5th? I find mine is lugging at 60kph in 5th.
Hi Mark
How do you think the bike would cope with the motorway? For a reasonable distance?
Also any experience of it with a pillion?
Regards
Chris
Hi Chris, I personally would avoid motorways for any long distance. It would maintain 70 but you would be approaching it's maximum cruising speed, in addition it's a small light bike and I'd feel rather exposed and vulnerable. I haven't had a pillion on yet, although my daughter says she'd like to have a ride on the back. I'll report back on that.
Mark Buckmaster thanks Mark 👍🏻
I agree, it's pretty boring on any motorcycle on a motorway.
my good lady hated the pillion pad ...but we have now made a bigger pad out of foam rubber and she now loves riding pillion ......had to do two trips on the A 14 now its nearly run it was ok but i would not want to do it regularly
I would go directly to the DVLA
dvlaregistrations.dvla.gov.uk
The prices are inclusive, other sites add VAT and £80 assignment fee. So that £170 may well become £284 (no VAT on assignment fee), my registration cost £250 inclusive. I've now got R60 ENF on my Interceptor, although I've not put it on a black and silver plate, as it looks just fine as it is.
Hi I enjoy your videos very much, please can you let me know the make and style of your gloves.
What litre size are your leather panniers ? any news on the RE 650cc, You planning to get one ?
Hi Vim, the panniers are quite small with internal dimensions of w95mm x h270mm x l280mm. This equates to 7.182 cu litres. I've heard that bikes will be available to test in the US on 2nd September, not sure for anywhere else. I have put a deposit down for one, but it's subject to a test ride. But hopefully I will be purchasing one.
nice I had 2 off the carbed cast iron
Can I ask where you got the heat shield for the exhaust?
Thank you for the review, as a beginner the Royal Enfield definitely catch my eyes of classic of the 30’s era. My question is how does the chrome stand out as I love the look of chrome but worry the quality finish of chrome due to rust. Thank you #Vancouverfilmmaker
Hi Wayne, The chrome is good quality and provided you keep the bike clean is rust free. Particular attention needs to be kept on the wheel rims, as water can stand after it has rained, so you want to make sure you just wipe around the bottom of the rim before garaging it.
Mark Buckmaster thank you for the prompt reply, the weather is getting warmer and hopefully you are able to get more riding. Thanks. Again.
This post is 2 years older and royal enfield had check engine light and fuel gauge but india had it just few months before so bad .....
Nice bike matey xden
Nice bike
Thanks Joe
Where to get that watch on the cluster
Mark what's the deal with the silver plate. Would love one like that
David just search custom motorcycle number plates in Ebay
How has this euro 4 model been with vibration?
Ie are the bikes still bone rattlers when above 55mph?
Hi sir I'm thinking of selling my duke 390 to buy classic 500 squadron blue, is it a wise idea? Please reply!!
The best thing you can do is get a test ride on a 500 Classic and see if you like it. The Duke 390 is a lot more modern with more power and higher performance. It all rather depends what your priorities are. They are very different bikes. I hope that helps.
this bike is for those bikes who wants too feel there bike By the way i m loving my Interceptor 650
hi mark is it on standard gearing ian
Hi Ian, yes it's still on standard gearing.
There is no other bike that has the melody this bike has. It tells you when to change the gear coz it becomes grumpy 😂
