I'm pleasantly surprised that you react to this. Southeast Asia has some hidden gems like this movie, the sequel and Ong Bak plus a few others. Ong Bak focuses on Muay Thai whereas this movie showcases Pencak Silat, of which Iko is a practitioner and his grandfather was a Silat master. The debut movie for Iko was actually Merantau (Wander). This movie was his 2nd one.
The actor that played Mad Dog is Yayan Ruhain. He's a legit martial artist and he taught silat in several countries, even ones in Europe. He also has knowledge of aikido and karate and was the hand-to-hand combat instructor for the Indonesian National Police. He's the one in charge of fight choreography for Merantau, Raid and Raid 2.

But unfortunately, as time passed, he admits he lost the passion to continue Raid series. And I think he already hinted a "definite end" to it with Rama's last words in Raid 2 - "No, I am Done".

Nobody would expect a Welsh director with some Indonesian Martial Artist combo would end up with one if not the greatest martial art & action film of the decade. Gareth Evans is really something else. The Raid with its sequel really took the action world by storm back then and almost killed the shaky cam + quick edits trend immediatly. Thanks to these movies we got stuffs like John Wick, Daredevil, Extraction and alot more great action films. There is been alot of action directors that tried to surpass Gareth Evans in doing action but noone is even close even to this day. Btw about Dredd having a similar concept to The Raid is really an unfortunate coincidence. Noone rips off each other. The fact is they are both take their inspiration from Die Hard. The Martial art form used in The Raid is called Pencak Silat. Its a MA style from Indonesia that looks less flashy compared to others but can be super deadly at the same time. They utilized like almost every single part of a body as a fighting tool. The gritty martial arts film genre is already exist before The Raid started by Ong bak(?) from Thailand but The Raid elevated it more to the next ten levels. Gareth Evans sees The Raid as a Horror Survival film instead of a Martial arts film. Its not just end there with The Raid franchise. There is also Headshot and The Night Comes For Us (also an Indonesian film) thats pretty much when a martial arts film meets horror slasher films (Even more brutal film than The Raid). The super fast fight choreography in the whole film are real. Nothing being faked with speed up edits or whatsoever. Also the actors are doing their own stunts (no stunt doubles except for Andi's actor) since 98% of the casts are build of stuntments, martial artist, and the one who can do both. Sometimes Iko uwais (The main character actor) had told to slow down a bit since the camera couldnt catch up with his speed. The whole movie costs around like 1 million. Its so low budget that they had to told the actors to mimic the slow motion in the first shootout in the dark scene cuz they cant do the actual slow mo for a reason. Score was composed by Mike Shinoda. Yep the one from Linkin Park which is awesome. The behind of scenes of this film is awesome and you should check it out. It will make you appreciate the movie even more

This was one of your BEST reactions!! To answer the question you posed in the very beginning, he's Muslim. Indonesia has one of the largest Muslim populations with over 200 million, I think only India has more maybe? Iko Uwais is an actual Muslim. Regarding the movie, id say this is one of the greatest action movies out there. Super underrated. Beginning to end intense action with a plausible, believable story. The fighting, 'visceral', literally. Mad Dog? ...wow, just wow. In most movies, yeah you know the bad guy will lose, but this guy, fantastic. I mean when he was still going AFTER they got that bulb in him? What kind of monster is that? They really had to put everything they had into beating him. What a badass. Exhilarating!!!
Oh and ps, despite having the same idea of 'raiding a building of bad guys' Dredd is still a PHENOMENAL movie in its own right. Dredd also happens to be one of my favourite action movie. My wife is Indonesian (where the movie is from) and Indonesians LOVE this movie. Why? You have to understand the level of corruption of the police over there. It's hard for Americans to grasp how bad it is - I thought about writing examples, but it would be a freaking book - point being, the police are all crooked - they (the cops) force any honest cops out - and bribery and violence is their way of doing business.
So - why do the Indonesian people LOVE this movie? Because they want good cops, they want heroes, and this movie was a MASSIVE hit over there. Think of it - do you know ANY other Indonesian movies? Any? This movies was MASIVELY popular in Asia - because many of their countries have the same problem.
We like it for the action and the "good guy against all odds" story - but it's popular in Asia for a very different reason.

    Springtime, 10 years ago.
Following the buzz and it's debut at the Toronto International Film Festival.
This was the next new action phenomenon and we wanted more.
    Very few theaters had it.
But the DVD, On demand markets made sure it was available for major viewing.
In those days of the 2010s, Guerilla filmmaking at it's finest.

This film is amazing, not it show cases Iko Uwais skill, the camera work is awesome with fight coreography. I am not martial artist my self, but I do know human anatomy and this film is unlike most Hollywood films in this film, kill hits with knives and such really do aim for vital spot, major arteries, major internal organs and with speed and precision of hits is simply astounding.

The Raid. The other, other Dredd movie!
I know, editing is such a bloody pain at times. But good to know if you get really stuck and inundated I can jump in top, if needed.
How about you do a live watch along one night, save you guys editing and just have a stopwatch counter on screen instead of mini screen?
With Summer season coming up, kick back with a weekly Monday Movie, asking your fans what films you guys should watch.
Doesn't have to be a first time viewing either. You can close your eyes and recite every word of The Last Starfighter if picked!
    Your welcome!
    ;)

Honestly, until you mentioned it, I had no idea this was on HBOMax. I still remember the first time I saw this on cable years ago, I was mesmerized. After seeing this finally, can you now see why people call the Dredd (Judge Dredd) reboot movie an american version of The Raid (more of a great homage)? In fact, I can even see a bit of Expendables 3 being an homage to this and even a bit of Mile 22 being an homage to this as well. Did this movie make you a bigger fan of Iko Uwai? He was great in Mile 22. I have not seen Wu Assassins yet, but plan to. I need to see Iko Uwai vs. Shang-Gi, LOL!

Some scenes in Daredevil series and Captain America as well.. and of course John Wicks.
Keanu Reeves is a big fan of the Raid films he invited Iko Uwais for a cameo in Man Of Taichi and later casting Yayan Ruhian (MadDog) and C.A.Rahman (Assassin from Raid 2) as duo assassins in John Wick 3.

Great that you mention V/H/S 2 Safe Haven scene. That part directed by the same person with The Raid, Gareth Evans and another Indonesian film director Timo Tjahjanto.
Fun fact Timo make action movie with Iko Uwais and Joe Taslim too, the tittle is The Night Comes For Us at Netflix. After this you react The Raid 2 and The Night Comes For Us to experience Indonesian action movie masterpiece.

    • @zekarou7831

There's "Headshot (2016)", also directed by Timo and starring Iko Uwais.
I recommend watch it first before The Night Comes For Us.
Or better yet, watch "Merantau (2009)" before any of that if you can.

I would say the fight scenes in the sequel are just as good but bigger. The first was enclosed and claustrophobic where as the second film get bigger spaces to play with. Plus a few things you didn't see in action film in the first one this one has it and it's an action movie staple. These movies are incredible and some of the best action films ever made. This impresses men and women and for an action movie it's even a good date movie 🙂 Word is there was going to be a 3rd film but that never came to light.

The Raid and Raid 2 are amazing action movies. I feel the hate (well hate is a strong word in this case) Dredd got was uncalled for since Dredd started filming 4 or 5 months BEFORE The Raid started filming even though The Raid came out first in theaters. Dredd is also an incredible action movie. Between The Raid (and sequel), Dredd and Mad Max Fury Road etc, the early to mid 2010s was just an insane time for amazing action movies with insane choreography (aka John Wick).

Yay. I can’t believe you’re reacting to one of my personal favorite action movies 😊 this movie practically ruined American fight scenes for me. Lol. That final fight scene will always be a stand out to me because it was two vs one, but they still got their butts handed to them. The M/Cs win totally came down to luck vs Mad Dog.
