Berandal was Gareth Evans original concept for the first movie, however he was unable to secure funding to make it. After the absolute barn storming success of Raid 1, he was essentially given a blank check and the Raid 2 was made. Evans, Uwais, and Ruhian (Mad Dog) put together essentially the Godfather of Martial Arts films here. The cinematography and style were absolutely top level (also the writing, set design/direction, stunts and stunt sequences), to say nothing of the incredible choreography.

So basically Yayan Ruhian said that not only Evans had written Berandal, Ruhian and Uwais had also finishing the choreography of it in 10 months. And when Evans told them to make a new choreography Ruhian was like "Okay, for what scene?" to which Evans replied "No, for a new movie. Make it above Merantau but below Berandal". Uwais told Ruhian "Damn, I only see your face and the mattress, man, for this past 10 month" and Ruhian replied "yeah, it's a fortune no one gets pregnant, hahaha"
I remember watching this with my dad and when Rama and he was freaking out in the last battle against the assassin. He was like: how are they still standing!!!! But he loved it anyways
Rama is a killing machine. He took down three assassins and delivered the killing blows using their own respective specialized weapons, not to mention the other goons. He is a monster.
Making a sequel for arguably one of the best and most influential action films is tough enough, but to expand on it and even elevate it more than it already did? Gareth Evans nailed both of the Raid films.
I've seen so many people be totally baffled by Yayan Ruhian suddenly appearing again, wondering how Mad Dog was still alive. Kudos to you guys for not being phased by it, and correctly deducing that it was just a different character.

Uco twanted to start a gang war with Goto's Japanese mobsters because he hated seeing foreigner rivals have so much power in their country, and more importantly because he thought fighting a war would allow him to impress his dad and gain the power he wanted, but Uco's dad insisted on maintaining the peace rather than starting a war that would destabilize business and the balance of power as well as causing mass casualties. Uco had Prakoso killed and blamed it on Goto's gang because he knew that his dad thought of Prakoso like family, and Uco thought his death would make his dad angry enough to go to war with Goto.
At like 28 minutes or something you mention them speaking english and almost dont realize it. And i think that speaks volumes about how good this movie is. You get so caught up in it, that you forget you've been reading subtitles the whole time. The perfect foreign film for western audiences. Parasite did this well too.
Fun fact: Yayan (Mad Dog / Koso) and Cecep (The Final Assassin) teamed up in John Wick 3. There's a great fight between them and John Wick at around the end of the movie. Don't miss em!

it's funny how rama was no match for mad dog on the raid. he only got the win because of his brother but he was taking an entire organization here with fighters on his level. just imagine how strong mad dog is.
Fun fact: The prison guard who knocks out Iko's character at the end of the prison brawl is the director, Gareth Evans. He also appears, briefly, in the nightclub, standing with his back to the camera, in the background!!!
I remember renting The Raid Redemption at red box and was so impressed by it, when I heard a 2nd part was coming out I was so hyped. When Part 2 came out I remember it showed in the theater for a week at Harkins here in Mesa and I went to see it in the theater and seeing the car chase scene was soo awesome! Lol I had a good time even though it was just me in the theater cause no one saw it or even knew what The Raid was at the time.
Making a great sequel is already a hard task. Its more hard when the first one is already a masterpiece. But this one really did it being some of the greatest sequel ever. Actually The Raid 2 was already planned before the first film under a different name (Berandal) but since Gareth Evans failed to secure the fundings for the film. He made The Raid redemption in a hope that it would make some money that needed for Berandal and it actually did. Its even more success than what he expected. The Raid 3 started being planned at some point after The Raid 2 but Gareth decides to cancel it cuz of lots of issues. Some of them were The third film would be alot different than the prequels. It wont end up pretty well he thought.
The Raid 3 not yet happen, so the next movie you can react is The Night Comes For Us. Had some actor & actress from both The Raid 1 & 2. With good fight choreography too, and more bloody.

I always tell friends that The Raid: Redemption is an excellent action movie and The Raid 2: Berandal is an excellent organized crime movie. So glad I saw the first one on a whim by myself in the theaters at 11 pm.
look up how the did the camera shot from inside the car to outside to inside and then outside again. It's mind blowing how they did that sequence of camera moves!

Gareth Evans has gone on to make the best Crime Drama in the UK called "Gangs of London". It's American launch was botched so it only came to the US on AMC Plus. But it has some of the best acting and writing you'll see on television, and the most brutal action you'll see outside of The Raid films. I hope season 2 catches on and folks start reacting to it as well.
Before TNCFU there's *Headshot (2016)* - made by same director, same team, and same Iko Uwais as lead protagonist. Same style and brutality too. It's a huge miss if you skip over it.

The Raid franchise was brutal indeed but The Night Comes For Us is pretty much a slasher horror film meets martial art. And its such an awesome combination
Granted the budget goes a lot further in Indonesia, but the most impressive thing about this (to me) is that they pulled all of this off for under $5 million. More money has been spent on just John Travolta for Redbox specials.
The Night Comes For Us is the spiritual successor to the raid movies. it is also the most gory of all of them, and in my opinion, has the best 1 on 1 fight scene in movie history. the crescendo is insane
Now that y’all have watched both Raid movies, might I interest y’all in the following: I saw the Devil(brutal, gore, dark) The man from nowhere(just as brutal and as visceral as The Raid movies but less martial artsy because they lean more towards realism) Flashpoint(Donnie Yen, not Barry Allen. I swear the fight scenes in that movie will blow you away!)

Cool bit of trivia, Hammer Girl is played by an actress (Julie Estelle) that was at the peak of her career doing sweetie, princess, girl next door type rolls similar in reputation to Anne Hathaway. She actually had to fight to be allowed to do this movie because the agency and studios she was contracted with didn't want her in a R rated violent movie as a villain. This role opened up her career path and allowed her to get tons of better roles. (Side fact, she did an interview about "The Raid 2" and was so proud of her bruises she was showing them off and was totally hyped to do more work like the Hammer Girl role.)

Oh yeah, if you want the next pieces from Gareth Evans. There is a series called Gangs of London. You will see the similar directing style especially the fighting scene. Even though there was no silat parts on the fight choreography, but I think this is another example/project/tutorial for Hollywood how to made action pictures with compelling narrative.

If you liked the choreography of the fighting scenes, try to watch some match of Pencak Silat. It's an indonesian martial art. The interesting part is that there's not only match (like karate or judo or taekwoondo) but also a sort of "syncronized dance". The sparring partners execute an intricate choreography and the judges give them votes. It's like watching the movie but without gore and blood ;)

Chocolate 2008 and The Night Comes for Us 2018 next. The fight choreography in both movies are just as insane.

Oh yeah, if you want the next pieces from Gareth Evans. There is a series called Gangs of London. You will see the similar directing style especially the fighting scene. Even though there was no silat parts on the fight choreography, but I think this is another example/project/tutorial for Hollywood how to made action pictures with compelling narrative.
Im surprised that Gareth Evans hasnt been picked up to direct a bigger films by Holywood or anyone big out there

If you liked the choreography of the fighting scenes, try to watch some match of Pencak Silat. It's an indonesian martial art. The interesting part is that there's not only match (like karate or judo or taekwoondo) but also a sort of "syncronized dance". The sparring partners execute an intricate choreography and the judges give them votes. It's like watching the movie but without gore and blood ;)

Not the 'trapped in a building' action thriller, but a greater foray in to the mob world with him being undercover. Really great sequel, fantastic action as usual
