Sometimes, songs are meant to just be fun. They are not written to save the planet, stop all wars, bring about the rise of Capricorn in the night's sky or give you the whitest teeth. This song rocks and then slips into a suggestive and sensual lovers' decision. Eric Carmen did himself proud when he penned this.
Right?! He was so very talented and pretty young when he wrote all the songs for the Raspberries, then for himself and then others. He had a fantastic voice, and I read that he wrote this with the girl's dialogue being suggestive rather than the guy's in order to get past censors. He also said that he asked himself what makes people like songs, and the answer was a catchy chorus. So, he made the verses really short and the choruses really long. He had aa piano as the only piece of furniture in his living room for years. He wrote prolifically from the age of 21 or so to 26 to fill up 4 albums for the Raspberries. I get a Roy Orbison vibe from his voice. He wrote the hit song Almost Paradise sung by Mike Reno and Anne Wilson. Oddly, he did not write one of the songs that became a hit for him later on: Hungry Eyes.
It's 10.30pm Tuesday night 12/03/2024 and I've just flicked the T.V. over to Ch 9 in Sydney. They were showing The Raspberries "Go all the Way" I thought "Why are they playing that?" "Is Eric touring soon?" Then I thought "Oh no he hasn't died" "Has he?" My fears were confirmed by the news voice over person. "Eric Carmen was 74" Now I can't stop crying. Not only did Eric help create one of the greatest, mind blowing Guitar riffs in Rock history, he then composed some of the most tasteful Ballads of all time. Good quality Ballads are extremely hard to write. Thanks for the great music and the brilliant singing voice Eric. Eric lived a successful existence and died peacefully in his sleep. "Come on Baby!!!" RIP - Eric Carmen
Same as you, January 62, baby.. loved it when it came out, and every time I hear it now, which is rare, stops me dead in my tracks and sends me to such a nostalgic place that I can even smell the air that I breathed back then❤😂🎉❤😂🎉❤😂🎉✌🏽☮️
Love love love this song. It's total ear candy, and like you said, it's a blend of styles and vibes: big, crunchy guitar riff, late '50s/early '60s throwback vocal stylings on the chorus, catchy melody... Just a great song!
They don't write 'em like this anymore. The production, arrangement, and performance are second to none. You begin with that bad ass rock riff that rolls into that smooth Elvis-like verse to an undeniably catchy chorus with backing vocals, back into that power riff and change with other great changes and bits to the end. That Beatle-esque Come on! Come on! COME ON! Wooooo whoooo who! So Paul! GREAT stuff.
Yes!!! Finally somebody reacted to this awesome song! It has such a unusual structure, and such a mishmash of influences and styles and emotions, and yet it all adds up to power pop perfection. Irresistible!
The lead singer is Eric Carmen. Some hits include "All by myself" "Never gonna fall in love again" " Make me lose control" and his most popular song "Hungry Eyes" from The Dirty Dancing soundtrack.
From MY hometown of Cleveland, Ohio, that's my fellow Clevelander Eric Carmen on lead vocals for The Raspberries! Eric Carmen would go on to write many big hits for other artists, including Celine Dion and contributing to the soundtrack of the movie "Dirty Dancing"! CLEVELAND ROCKS!!!
Good song from 1972. If you liked this song listen to another big hit for The Raspberries in the early 70s called "I Wanna Be With You". Real catchy song. Love your reaction.
I grew up listening to this song and I wore out my 45 playing it over and over again. Eric Carmen has a great voice and this song had a nice driving beat and great harmonies.
I bought this 45 in '72 and used to play it over and over on my mom's stereo. I can't explain why I like it either but it's one of those songs I could never play just once. I always had to replay it two or three times for it to meet my musical appetite.
Before they were the Raspberries, they were the Choir. Before that some of them were the Mods from Mentor, Ohio. The Mods played at a lot of my high school dances.
There’s nothing much to articulate. It’s IS a great classic pop rock song and your description in the very words you used described it perfectly. You officially get it.
I really liked this song when I was much younger and still do to this day. Takes me back. Eric Carmen on vocals and guitar sound was great. Classic song!
I was 12 when I heard this song on the radio. It brings back so many memories of my childhood. listening to the radio and later buying the 45 record so my sister could play the record.
Melodic, Beatlesque, power pop...I was 12 when this one hit the charts. Didn't have any direct, older musical influence yet, being the eldest...so AM radio pop charts/TV were it. Had this track on K-Tel Records, Believe in Music compilation. My tastes would take an abrupt change in only a couple years, meeting my late, best friend. Memories...regardless, that Guardians of the Galaxy, movie/soundtrack, introduced new generations to old school cool❗️ ☆ Always loved this ear candy👍🏻 🇨🇦
I have always loved this song and I treasure the memories of my sister and I playing this over and over with her doing her best Eric Carmen impressions as she played the drum part on her kit. Thanks for bringing back a wonderful memory!
Lead singer Eric Carmen had several great solo hits as well a short time later; All by Myself", "Never Gonna Fall in Love Again", "She Did It", "Hungry Eyes", and "Make Me Lose Control".
Hometown Cleveland, Ohio boy! Heard this song for the first time in my high school gym in 1972. The Raspberries and Eric Carmen tore that gym roof off!!!
This song is in my personal top 10 songs of all time! The way you can see the story and the emotions that Eric put into the lyrics in a fun, lite hearted way
Everybody remembers their "first"....when she kissed me and said "please go all the way"...wow! I do remember her singing that to me almost 50 years ago! We stayed together through high school (mostly).. but we never married. She is a good friend today all these years later...and yes I love this song and loved it in Guardians of the galaxy!
I was 6 going on 7 years old and I remember this song very well, I love it, it brings back memories of me and my sister singing it, her in her room and me in my bedroom and singing to it, great memory
I think everyone the first time they heard this song was like... wait... what did I just listen to? The stark changes, Eric Carmen's unique voice, the suggestive lyrics. It was different, but you know you liked it. Still sounds interesting today. Great reaction.
This song has the rock party vibe , romance, novel/movie vibe as well as just an overall feel good ear candy sound it’s like three for the price of one.. and definitely one of my all-time favorite tunes any and every time I hear this song puts me in a good mood…❤😂🎉❤🎉❤🎉✌🏽☮️🤲🙏
Hey, as one said that they thought the Raspberries were saying " Please Don't Go Away ", it is important to note that, 50 years ago, the only way to know for sure what the lyrics were was to buy the LP and read the included lyrics. Back then we , in some cases, guessed having no tools like today to find out immediately...but we enjoyed singing along just the same. 🙃
I was 12 when this came out. Wasn't the song lyrics for me then...it was that key and guitar riff. That's the year I told my parents I wanted to play guitar. Now, at 63?, I'm playing guitar in our church worship band. But...those three opening chords....light reverb, perfect tone. STILL great today! Yep...I, too, hear Elvis, Freddy and Roy, too. If I were sitting in a room striving to write the perfect hit song...this would be it. :) I actually found your site searching on this song.
Rest In Peace Eric Carmen 1949-2024. Singer,Guitarist,Pianist ,Composer. Go All The Way reached # 2 in the USA but was banned in Great Britain. I always thought If The Who and Beach Boys collaborated on a song it would sound like this.Mishmash is a great word. One snotty reviewer said “Using Riffs taken from Middle Beatles and early The Who ,Go all the Way is a mishmash of regurgitated oatmeal,The Rasberries laughed all the way to the bank!!
Loved your reaction to this awesome song. I was 15 when this came out, and it was hugely popular then. Who says that you have to have a reason for liking any song other than you just really liked it? Some songs were just feel good/meant to be enjoyed and rocked out too, and that was enough reason to enjoy it over and over.
"I'm trying to explain it. It's like, I have, like, no words, really..." -- Angela "Talking about music is like dancing about architecture" -- F. Zappa. It put you in a good place. What else must it do? I've always really liked it too. This one is one of the cornerstones of Power Pop, as far as I'm concerned. And that's high praise. Eric Carmen's (the lead singer here) "All By Myself" is probably not so much in that category, but it's very good, nonetheless, and was also a hit a bit later. If you like this, folks will suggest that you listen to bands like Bad Finger, Big Star, or even Cheap Trick -- and you definitely should.
Eric Carmen !! Was his first hit with The Raspberries in 1972, got the tiny record direct from the US, needed 3 weeks to get it after ordering then, so long ago !!!
You like it because it's a fun song. I recall they were slammed for sounding too British (even though they were from Cleveland, OH). When it was released it played everywhere in Ohio on radio and blew up nationally as well. That was summertime between my sophomore and junior years in high school. I was taking driver's education in summer school. And before the end of the summer, I had a license and was jamming out to this song in my car. Great memories. Also remember fondly the girl I had a crush on at the time. Never dated her, though. But we became good friends during the final year of high school. She sat beside me in senior English class.
Girl I love this song because it’s a real feel good song that brings out your happiness and true love you have and express to all your loved ones, friends and everyone who makes a huge impact on you…this such an incredibly amazing inspirational song. I Love it because it brings out your inner feelings and much much more.
So, the song. Please Go All The Way is released on "Hump Day" ... yeah, ok, makes sense 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣. Angela, I just love you and don't seem to be able to get back to you often enough but just know, there's 1 more fan out there that loves you !!!
The Raspberries! Great musicians. I was 18 in 72 and this song just Rocks and makes you want to get up and dance. They had 2 hits then disappeared as far as I know. The other one is - I Want To Make it With You.
This song combined the subject matter of Shirelles 'Tonights the Night' and Carole King's 'Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow' with Free's 'Alright Now' guitar riff. Genius. Eric Carmen had the same issue as BIlly Squire. Both were looking for solo careers but made bad choices in presentation, so they were cut short.
I’m so glad you liked it!! I knew you would. That’s cool you hear a similarity with him and Freddie mercury…never thought about it..I always thought he sounded like Paul McCartney.. this actually came out a couple of years before Queens first record.and Eric Carmen is a phenomenal singer and songwriter…maybe we should do another one lol.

Reminds me of high school; but I was actually only an 8th grader I believe in 1972. So it provides a nostalgic component for me Also has a good rock'n roll dynamic of that rocking' beat, mixed with Eric Carmen's somewhat controlled vocals (with pitch anyway).
Wow!! This is really good. Didn't know it by the band title but remember this from long ago!! It's just a lot of fun and full of romance and longing thats why i like it. 🎶👍♥️
It's just a great song and recording. First it's a rocker, then a very hooky \ catchy upbeat ballad, then rocks again, then has some Beach-Boys in there, then some Beatles, then back to ballad and then finishes as a catchy, upbeat rocker. A unique song, and it's also mostly chorus! Love it.
My 18 year old son loves the Raspberries. I raised him well.
Yep I’m 65 and I still love this song ! R.I.P Eric thank you

By the way you are cute.
I bought the 45 when it was first released. The music/arrangement and his voice are amazing! His first hit!
DayOne (Angela)-- I got a kick and some chuckles watching your eyes slide back and forth, up and down. Ha!!! Cute !! 😊
What an iconic voice Eric Carmen has.He gets nowhere near enough credit for his early work with the Rasberries.
Right?! He was so very talented and pretty young when he wrote all the songs for the Raspberries, then for himself and then others. He had a fantastic voice, and I read that he wrote this with the girl's dialogue being suggestive rather than the guy's in order to get past censors. Oddly, he did not write one of the songs that became a hit for him later on: Hungry Eyes.
Yes…he does.
6 yrs old in ‘72 and it blew me away as a kid and even more as a guitar playing adult!
It's 10.30pm Tuesday night 12/03/2024 and I've just flicked the T.V. over to Ch 9 in Sydney.

The riff is irresistible and the vocals are great.
I'm 57 now and this song is seared in my brain.
Same
One of my 70's Favorites!
Your reaction is why this song remains a classic after all these years!
I really like it when you younger people listen to oldster music and realize how good it can be.
The Raspberries are pure power pop. Love this track.
Love love love this song. It's total ear candy, and like you said, it's a blend of styles and vibes: big, crunchy guitar riff, late '50s/early '60s throwback vocal stylings on the chorus, catchy melody... Just a great song!
Perfectly stated. Couldn't have said it better myself.
Hell yeah well sad❤😂❤😂🎉

In 1972 I was 25 years old life was good now I'm 76 and this bought back a lot of good memories thank you. Peace out.

@@blackwolf6082 Great times, 1972!
The lead singer is Eric Carmen. Some hits include "All by myself" "Never gonna fall in love again" " Make me lose control" and his most popular song "Hungry Eyes" from The Dirty Dancing soundtrack.
It's the beautiful sweet emotions of it that are the soul of this beautiful song and music.
It's a good song, that's why! Plenty of fun, a good hook, great beat and wonderfully made!!
I really dig it for personal reasons that I choose not to share, but it has a magnificent and magical vibe!

There is an exhibit for Celevland bands that mentions them. I saw it a few years back when I visited the Rock Hall of Fame.
He didn't write Hungry Eyes. He did write Almost Paradise for other singers to have a hit with for Footloose.
From my hometown..played at my after prom in 1971

Eric Carmen is a great singer/songwriter. he has a song on the "dirty dancing" soundtrack as well. his song "all by myself" also awesome.
Hungry Eyes was not written by him believe it or not. He did write Almost Paradise for Mike Reno and Anne Wilson to sing though.

Don't want to say goodbye is their best imo
I saw them perform this live in early 1970s.
Power pop perfection! Great selection.
Eric Carmen always gave me Roy Orbison vibes, especially this song. Two unique male vocalists, two to three decades apart.
