China calls for global unity amid Western exodus | DW Business Special

  • China is calling for global unity and an end to trade wars. It has warned that the whole world stands to lose out from a fragmenting global economy. Is this a sincere attempt by Beijing to mend relations with the West, or part of a strategy to boost its own economy? We put that question and more to Alicia Garcia Herrero from French investment bank Natixis.

Ping’s idea of globalization is quite different from that of western countries. China has become an economic and a military super power because of benign belief of democracies that with prosperity China’s hegimonistic tendencies will moderate, bullying of neighbors will change to regional cooperation. Until Ping came to power this trend was visible. However Ping changed this upside down. He weaponized every gain from coupling with the west to threaten not only the neighbors but even the major industrial nations. He picked up quarrel with his benefactors such as US, UK, EU, Japan, South Korea, Indonesia etc and subjugated those who were naive enough to fall in his belt & road trap. Therefore ‘decoupling’ is the right strategy till Ping, a bosom friend of Putin, remains in power.

      * Mutual Defense Treaty between the United States and the Republic of Korea signed in 1953.
      * The Five Power Defence Arrangements (FPDA) are a series of bilateral defence relationships established by a series of multi-lateral agreements between Australia, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore, and the United Kingdom, all of which are Commonwealth members that once belonged to the British Empire. Signed in 1971, the FPDA consists of the five powers consulting each other "immediately" in the event of threat or an armed attack on any of the FPDA members for the purpose of deciding what measures should be taken, jointly or separately in response. The US would come to the aid of three of its 5 eyes.
      * The Five Eyes - US, UK, Australia, New Zealand, Canada.
If China was winning the diplomacy war in the South China Sea, then why are all the countries in the region signing or jumping on defense pacts, buying more military hardware, or allowing the US access to more bases -- 5 to 9 bases in the Philippines? And, the G7 has warned China about weaponing the South China Sea after international courts ruled their claims to it illegal.
I believe you're the one that's out of touch.
Besides, if no cargo travels through the South China Sea, how will China get its manufacturing out? The EU blocked access from Russia, the "silk road" is fraught with conflict or destabilized nations, and the G7 would act together as it has historically done. And BRICS, outside of Russia -- they still have a bunch of nukes and hardware -- is a joke. You think the Saudis would ally with China in a conflict against the US? Who will protect Saudi if Iran decides to strike and the US is caught in a South China Sea conflict? The Saudis wanted the F35 and buy F15s.
China thought they could bully everyone, but now that there are cheaper options without the headaches (false detention, arrests, prison time, ransacking of offices, more onerous bureaucracy), and capitalists are reconsidering their footprint in China.

China has only it'self to blame. The smarter parts of the world know this .... and the less than smart parts will unfortunatly have to go through a little pain to realise the truth. Shifting western investment and supply chains to neighbours like the Philippines, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia and honest trading former communist countries like, Lao, Cambodia and Vietnam will not only help to develop those countries and streghten regional democracy but also reward honest partners (even if they are socialist states). Global trade will eventualy return - thought it might take a while (years or decades) but when it does it should be with much stronger expectations - and less greed. Once biten, twice shy.

Even without global tensions rising, global companies would have had to decouple from China eventually. Chinese labor costs are rising too fast and there are countless countries with labor costs 4-6x cheaper than China. Every dollar invested in those countries could produce greater returns than any dollar invested in China. Even the Belt and Road Initiative was started because China knew it could make more money investing in other countries than investing in itself. Now they have more empty houses and apartments than they know what to do with, so what's the point of further investments?

Open commercial ties with democracies Argentina, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Uruguay, Guyana, INDIA. All of these countries they are democratic and want to have alliances with the West. Why not trade with these countries? Why not trade with african democracies? This is something the West is lacking which is appeal. Its like a circle of friends. Russia, China and Iran are in shambles right now... just by increasing oil production, forging new alliances and decoupling with China will generate a second fall of the communist regimes.
