- Former US President Donald Trump, who accepted the Republican presidential nomination at last week's Republic National Convention, has claimed on various occassions, including during recent campaign events and the disastrous TV debate with President Joe Biden, that he would immediately end the war between Russia and Ukraine if reelected. There is palpable concern across the European continent that in a bid to quickly end Russia's war, Trump might pressure Ukraine into ceding territory to Russia. Doing so could encourage Russian President Vladimir Putin to try to further expand Russia's territory and threaten the Baltic nations.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban visited Russian President Vladimir Putin on what the former described as a "peace mission." Former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson recently claimed in his regular column for the British Daily Mail tabloid that he had presented former US president and current presidential contender Donald Trump with a "peace plan" that would require Putin to withdraw to "at least" the pre-invasion boundaries of 2022; Russia illegally annexed the Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea in 2014 and was already occupying parts of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions of Ukraine by 2022.
DW speaks to historian Stephen Wertheim, senior fellow in the American Statecraft Program at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.

America is hungry for sanity and compassion over the vitriol of a madman. The world feels likewise, although a few dictators will be disappointed and left in the lurch.
The unmentionable independent candidate may help provide that.
America is only hungry for money. Always

"That’s the strongest peace force I’ve ever seen. There were more army tanks than I’ve ever seen. They’re going to keep peace, all right." --Donald 'I'm like a smart person' Trump
What are Media telling in your country since 2022? Ours is telling us things like "weapons for peace" and "sending weapons protect our democracy".
So where is Trump wrong with demanding more military?
CarniegeEndowament for peace...all he talked about was war
Freedom is more important than peace, but you wouldn't understand.
To imagine Trump wouldn't favour Russia is delusional.
Why do you think the Russian's invaded the Ukraine during Biden's presidency? They did not invade during Trump's presidency. Answer: the Russians know Biden is a coward and won't attack them.
@@anthonyd4341 Trump is delusional, so to expect anything of him is simply foolish.
@231rosslyn he's a delusion within a delusion
“Civilized” humanity are in a state of suspended disbelief about what is happening. It must have been just like this in 1937. Totally insane naïveté.
If I were Harris in a debate and asked about Russia, and Trump responds with “I would solve the crisis within one day, I’m the best problem solver and negotiator”. Then I would say “My plan is so great. There’s nothing like it…it will be big.. it would be wonderful… sound familiar? Thats the way he’s always talk, and doesn’t have any plans. In the 2020 election, he said he had big plans and shared a large document for the news to read. It was all copy and pasted from the previous terms. His words are empty. He rarely strategizes.
So I’ll say my plan first, I will 1. Send further support to Ukraine, and 2nd. Phone Putin and ask him to leave Ukraine. Trump would never have the bravery to do that. He has never criticized Putin either.. so.. what’s your plan, give us details Trump”
I would put trump into the position and responsibility to contact Putin. If he wins the election, he would be expected to contact Putin. If the Ukraine crisis continues, his “I would end the war within a day” a total claim and a bluff. He claims that Russia never invaded Ukraine because of him. So.. how much is that true?
I’m not favoring either candidate yet, but I do want to pressure trump into being proactive on the Ukraine issue. No more empty self praises.
Actually, Trump is the only one talking about negotiating peace, everybody else talks about war and victory
Trump's idea of "peace" would be forcing Ukraine to give land to russia, it would be a victory for Putin 😑
@@AmonTheWitchThere’s no endless resources for ongoing war with no end in sight. They could lose a lot more including the most precious, people
@@editablair2674 they would lose a lot more, Russia already invaded Ukraine before and took land, now Putin's trying to again, if it succeeds he will try again.

odd. there’s multiple candidates for the presidency of the United States, yet you seem/are biased in presuming that one has a say prior to the voters.
You're a good thinker, but your knowledge of US electoral politics needs work. We're a two-party system; third parties don't count except for their ability to influence the first two parties. It's not cool but there ya go.

You expect Harris to do more than Biden administration did?
if the Dems win the House and the Senate then YES.
@@Cecil-yc6mc No, men. Harris is Biden administration.
Lol the world is in a bad place right now and who is leading during that time.
Was this guy born yesterday? How you frame the war is irrelevant to other countries’ position on the war. They are supporting Russia out of self interest.
Just like amerryca is serving it’s own interest.
This implies leverage over Russia. Leverage the US doesn’t have after blowing its load.
No. Trump will give Putin whatever he wants.
The irony is if he implements his oil policy and floods the market he could bring Russia to its knees when India goes to America for oil.

@@JeffEbe-te2xs No. If Trump wins then Biden just commits the USA to troops and air-force in Ukraine. You just watch the American population rally around the flag when Americans are killed by Russians.
I don’t understand. I thought it was Russia and the US who need to negotiate over Ukraine. Ukraine has no say in any of this, really - it lost its sovereignty to the US a long time ago..
@@Random_Dude42 It’s called reality. Better get used to it. Dumping the negotiation process in 2022 based on US promises of “unwavering” support alone ought to tell you something, Vladimir.
Ukraine is not a satellite state of the USA. Its citizens have chosen their own goals, and other countries influence events. If you were correct, it would have been in NATO since 2008.
@@stephenhill545 I don’t know what else Ukraine’s citizens have chosen, but they elected a liar with 0 political experience and 0 ability to compromise and conduct a political dialogue, wholly relying on its Western backers - an extremely dangerous undertaking. This war is a complex chain of events with multiple sides involved.
Russia should listen and think well to a proposal, and husband their young men for living. They have a neighbour to the south that is very strong militarily and has 1.4 billion people and needs natural resources. Nature adores a vacuum.

Though frequently brash in presented character, Donald Trump is intelligent and exceptionally tough. Most individuals would have been broken by a fraction of what Trump endured. The man was even shot at and wounded in an attempt on his life. In that moment of personal stress and danger he did not fall apart, but showed courage, determination and rose. This is the president the USA needs when dealing with international despots who truly only respect strength.
