You should write a book called "12 years with the 5d classic." Put your best pictures in it. I'm certain it would sell. The 5d classic holds a special place in the hearts of many.
I conducted a photo workshop and told the students to put a piece of black card over the screen, held in place with some Blue-Tack and only take 24 images at ISO 100 and 24 images at ISO 400 (switching between the two, depending on the weather) The fun was in finally seeing the images on the computer screen. This led to a very considered approach and a general slowing down of the picture taking process. Too much of todays work is about 'work-flow'. Speed, speed speed !! The screen tends to hinder the developing of skills. It is all about, take, chimp, delete. Take, chimp delete etc etc, until you have something you want. In the days of film, there was never that choice. Weddings could be a nail-biting experience until the final images were viewed. But that was part of the experience.
I bought my 5D on craigslist for $280.00. It came with the grip, 4 batteries, 2 chargers and 1 16GB card. Buy local, this things cost more on eBay and you get less stuff. Now I'm thinking of buying a Mark ii. I love the 5D's!!!!
I'm still using mine in 2022. Had it since 2008 and have used it A LOT! In pouring rain, in underwater housing doing surf photography, photo journalism, macro, landscape, skiing.. Only problem is finding really good batteries these days. This camera delivers pictures of a quality that far surpasses most photographers needs.
@@RichardBarleyphoto I own mine since 2007 and still love it, and treat it like a film camera and best friend... Same as you rarely look into a screen, I just prefer keep focus on the image through the optical viewfinder. I'm not convinced yet switching to EVF and mirrorless cameras, however it seems like DSLRs production is approaching to the end. What's your opinion about the new R5 and R6? Do we really need to switch to mirrorless? Probably it depends on the sort of work we doing...
Hi Richard. I want to say thanks for these videos. I’ve owned my 5D classic for about 4 years. I was lucky to pick up a really nice later one which hasn’t turned itself into a mirrorless camera. I’d been struggling to get the best out of it or anything I was really happy with until I discovered your channel. I realise now that you need to treat this camera as if it’s a film camera and I’ve adopted your 200/5.6/200 method and what a difference it’s made. I had been shooting in Av and relying on the camera for metering …not any more! Thank you again for these videos and tutorials. All the best, Dylan
That is one of the many aspects that make the Mk 1 such a classic to me. It was and remains a GOOD camera and also, it is a CAMERA! People who have not owned one will not understand...
I was using the 5d classic at a wedding yesterday and I think it's going to take a seriously good camera to make me change, maybe the Nikon 850 will be the perfect wedding camera
I agree but Sony are pushing them now. I hope they concentrate on stills and forget about the APC format and concentrate on less versions of exactly the same camera, they are making to many models.
I bought a used mk i recently and I'm having so much fun with it. The images from the camera are just so magical. I dropped it from about 2 feet and messed up the back screen so I just learned not to look at it like you mentioned in the video. It's such a liberating feeling not having to go through 17 menu screens and just shoot shoot shoot. It's like driving an old manual sports car. When I first got it I was a bit thrown off by how slow everything was but now somehow it feels faster.
Hi, I got my 5d in 2005, I was going to sell it for $350 with the batterypack, I rrcieved more than 5 offers but I couldn't let it go. I love this camera, is build like a tank. So glad that I kept it
After a relentless search, I got one 5D Classic yesterday in surprisingly good condition. There seems to be no application capable to check the shutter count of this DSLR. So, couldn't do that. I'm using 5DII for a while already with full satisfaction. Bought the Classic mainly for the eye-soothing colors and film look in images. I'm an enthusiast shooting landscape and wildlife. I plan to use the Classic for landscape and street photography. Canon 7D takes care of my wildlife photography needs. The test shots I took with my new 5D 1 in RAW turned out pleasing images when processed with DPP.
Since getting the 5DC, my 5D Mark IV has been collecting dust. I have never, ever had a camera where I'm seriously afraid to push the sliders so I won't change the original image. The SOOC out of this are heart melting. And yet you are one of the very few talking about this camera. Makes me wonder if people are blind or if only very few photographers care about color rendition? This is such an underrated camera. Yes the mirror might fall off, but it's so damn worth having this camera! I'm seriously thinking of buying another one soon.
I have just bought the 5D mki. It was an impulse buy, as I was looking to get a mk ii Then I watched a video by another TH-camr, and on the strength of that one video I bought the most expensive mk I on MPB at an eye watering £159! The camera arrived last week, and I spent a couple of hours walking around Old Leigh in Essex. I absolutely love this camera, it’s so simple to use. I set the aperture at 5.6 with the ISO set at 800, for that film grain look. I added a red filter in the settings for monochrome. I could just switch from neutral to monochrome with just a couple button pushes and a turn of the wheel. All the images straight out of the camera were fantastic. I don’t use Lightroom or anything similar. I like the feel of it as well, it’s heavy and well made. This now my oldest and main camera to use now.
I still have mine. I got the 20D, the 5D and now the OMD-EM1, all used and for small money. I am hardly able to sell the Canons to get more lenses for the Olympus, which now will save my neck and my back. Those two Canons have a nice built quality and sensors. The 5D is amazing
Amen to this review. I'm a fellow 5D mk1 fan. Probably like you I learnt photography pre digital era. When I first used this I was hooked. I still use mine along with my 1D mk 3. The 5D is a work horse. I use the viewfinder, not the screen, and I'm of an era where you know what you need settings wise in your head.this camera is as close as you get to film from a digital. I love it, I'm never getting rid of it. Great video about a brill piece of kit.
Hi Richard, this is a great video and really enjoyed watching it. Two weeks ago my 5D was stolen whilst doing a portrait shoot in a busy bluebell location. I had a 70-200 2.8 lens on it and I was absolutely devastated! My insurance company were extremely efficient and some 48 hours later a 5DS and a new lens arrived at my front door. Whilst I appreciate the cost difference between the two and the fact I have gained a significantly newer camera, I honestly miss my 5D. Yes I now have 50 megapixels but it is far from forgiving and almost impossible to achieve the optimum shot first time. ! I absolutely loved the image quality of the 5D and being a wedding photographer could not of asked for a better camera! I fully intend on purchasing another one and would highly recommend 5D over many newer cameras. All the best.
"Less is more" not only applies to the camera, but to your mindset and then your work. Simple images are stronger than busy ones. On a separate note, love the shutter sound.
Hello, in my opinion, as a nikon d750 user for a long time. I bought original 5d for about 2 years now. And image that produced is i can say “mature”. It deliver good colours and rich tones, feel a bit filmic too ❤. Whan we need is just a bit slow down our process and take photo with passion, that’s all u need, no need fast, no need rush. Just enjoy your time
When I decided to go full frame and bought a 5d classic, once I saw the stunning results this camera produces I bought a second one for spare. Most of the time I don't even need the raw files, the jpegs straight from the camera are that good.
To be fair, all you can do is estimate the shutter count, as there is no way to actually get a reading with this camera. I think I heard somewhere that Canon techs can access the shutter count with their low-level diagnostic tools, but outside of that, it's just not possible. I know because I've owned this camera for a couple years.
12mp is all you really need, this is a perfect portrait or landscape camera. No good if you want to use it for sports or birding as it just isn't fast enough plus it's a full frame and optical reach and speed are what's required for this. It's perfectly suitable for basic photography like weddings etc, the kind of thing anyone can do but many seem to think paying a fortune will get you much better results, unfortunately most of the time it won't, but people like the photos think they look good and are happy to recommend, instead of just buying a dslr setting it on auto and getting anyone to fire away
I just bought a 6d in September 2019 new for 800 bucks. I'm loving it. In the last 10 years not much happend in the Full Frame camera market. Yeah sure the ISO performance and the gimmicks got better. But if you just want to get a good picture and don't care about the gimmicks, get an DSLR of the begging of the 2010s and spend the rest of the money on good lenses.
The Canon 5D Classic is “a film camera in digital format”. It is hard to beat for portraits when used w/the 85mm, 1.8 lens. You can set up a dedicated B/W mode that has a classic film look that converting color to B/W does not achieve. Add an intervalometer and you a good time lapse camera too. I have owned mine since 2005. The simplicity of this camera is great for beginners since it encourages users “how to think” about photography... not “what to think”.
@@waltherziemerink Camera settings are subject, location and time of day dependent. I shoot in only RAW. I convert everything to DNG for my “digital” neg storage.
I am about to buy a 5d classic. I always wanted one (because of its unique output) and they are finally getting to a point where they are easy to find for just a couple hundred dollars. I loved this video. You come across as very genuine and honest. I'd trust that what you are saying about the "look" must be true.
@@RichardBarleyphoto Wow, I had forgotten that I left this comment. Fastforward to 2023, and I have owned the 5d classic for quite awhile, and I absolutely love it.
Awesome video/review. I brought the 5d mark iv and returned it within a week and decided to get the 5d mark iii. I was upgrading from a canon rebel t6i which I still have. You are right as a photographer I don't need 4K video wifi gps etc.... in my camera. That's why I chose the Mark iii. I'm hoping I can find a good Mk1 because I do need a another full frame professional camera that's affordable.
What a nice review - and I totally agree with you about the 5D sensor. It's so good for portraits and weddings, like you say, as there is a warmth and softness about the images (soft but still sharp, if that makes sense). Had mine for a few years now. Bought a mkii seven years ago and it is a leap forward from mki in some ways - but not in ALL ways. Like you say, the screen is there on the 5D to say 'yes there is a photo', you can't review the pic you just get on with the next part of the shoot. A photographer's camera!
Hi Moeran1944, I am shooting almost only portraits (not studio but often outdoors or on location) and starting getting paid jobs. What camera would you recommend? I own a Fuji X Pro 2 with excellent glass. But I like the colors of my former Canon 70D. And I like the handling/grip of the Canons (Sony is not my kind of which I like from this aspect). So, better a used 5D mark 3 for example? Or any other recommendation?
Great comment soft but sharp, it will be interesting to see what the new m50 file looks like, I wonder if it will be a bit to digital looking. I find the 5d mk4 file looks great for landscapes etc , but prefer the look of the mk1 for people.
5D is the best portrait camera I've ever used and I've owned and used a lot of cameras. Nikon F5, Hasselblad 500, Numerous Olympus and Canon film and digital cameras. I really like the 50mm 1.8 Canon lens. What a combo for portraits. Easy to use and spectacular results.
Richard Barley and Susan Stripling (NYC wedding photographer) both use the 24-105 and 70-200 lenses as their primary lenses. Brilliant! Must be something to it!! LOL Thank you Richard.
I have ended up using the "C" mode as a quick indoor setting to get around the lack of a dedicated ISO button. 1/80, F4, ISO 1600 is my base. seems to work for most scenes.
Great video Richard, just what I was after. My wife and I have owned 8 or 9 DSLR cameras over the years, ranging from my old faithful 300d to her 7d mk2. Before the digital era I ran a Canon eos5, the film version! EPIC camera! What you said is so true and on point. When buying a camera you need to know EXACTLY why you are buying it. For the first time since 2003 I just went mirrorless with my Canon M6. I am a fishing journalist that needs a defend APS-C cmos sensor with the most compact body to go in my backpack. My next purchase is a 5d mk1, hence why I landed on this video. I want it for portrait and landscape work. I love the simplistic design. I only ever shoot in manual or auto and that's it. Manual for composed photos and auto for quick candids. My wife has the 7d mk2 for sports and wildlife. I want a full frame but without the bells and whistles. The original 5 D is like a car with a super high quality engine, but no power steering, air conditioning or sunroof....just basic, simple and reliable. Thanks for the great video, I hope to order mine on Friday.
Bought my 5D a month ago for $250 in Russia. Using with 50 1.8, planning to buy 24-70 f 2.8. But even with shitty lense 5D produces fantastic images. Love it so much and hope that shutter won't die next couple of years)
I love my 70D but I bought one of these and I kinda love it a ton. It's no replacement but they complement each other well. I don't see me buying anything from this point on.
i have 3 5d mk1 with battery grips and i love them, the raw files are wonderful, i paid next to nothing for them, i also use old L glass i bought relatively cheap on ebay
I could never get use to that when i had a mk3. I want a nice big one on the top and back of every camera saying ISO in large letters with a big arrow pointing to it, my eyes are not what they were fifteen years ago when i got the camera 😂 thanks for your comment
Absolutely enjoyed your video and narration, which is a photograph in itself. Ordered 5D Mark 1 today and waiting to get my hands on it. I still use canon 1000d for 6 years now.
Ive been a Nikon photographer most of my life at one stage running my own modelling agency training new and prospective models, male and female. However I have moved into astrophotography and was told 'get an old 5D and take out the infra red filter'. This gives much better images of distant nebulae. However a close friend of mine was a 'Canon man' and we always had friendly rivalry whose were the best images. I bought a cheap old camera nothing with itnot even a lens or charger but I may just leave the conversion to IR and have some fun with it first! Also bought a broken one for spare parts. The Full frame sensor is also a superb bonus for night sky!
any 5d classic users want to share their exposure thinking? it seems like with the 5d classic you can overexpose a touch since the light roll-off is quite lovely. using a histogram, expose to the right? if so, how far? thumbs up.
No matter which sensor you have, its best to learn how it reacts to light. The key is to use the same camera for a very long time. Most people sell there camera to quickly. Exposing to the right and over exposing works with 5D classic but does not with many Nikons
I have several Canons, new and old models, and amongst them 2 5D's classic. Those have been my partners through this pandemic. I must have 500 pictures of myself. No one, so far has been able to create the creamy color of the 5D classic. I may let go of other cameras but never of my 5D's. That is my model of choice for nice portraits; actually, for everything ! What else can I say ??
I love my 5d mk1 and my EOS 1 .... they're digital and analogue brothers, and I'll use them until they drop. I've kept all of my cameras over the years, but these are my all time favourites.
Mad about the ISO button too. Auto ISO fixes it to some extent; MkIII and 6D (possibly MkII too) allow to link the SET button to changing ISO manually via the top dial, which would be great to have on this one.
Love my 5Dc!! I've been using it for 3 years for everything photography. Definitely great for portraits, skin tones are amazing. Pairing it up with the 70-200mm f4 is a badass combo! The simplicity of it is definitely a bonus too. Great review!
My only L lens at this moment is the 70 - 200 F4 and I dont feel I'm getting the most out of it on my crop sensor body (650D) and so I wanted to explore the world of full frame. Something is pulling me towards the 5D mk1. I've not seen a single bad review of it as yet. For studio portrait work, is this really a combination of body and lens that will stand up to say a 6D or 6D mk 2?
I bought a used 5D classic for $250 Canadian about 3 years ago, now they are around $500-$600 Canadian on ebay. I love this camera, so like a film camera.
@@RichardBarleyphoto Yes I still use it but given the pandemic, I don't get to travel as much and I didn't book any model shoots. I like how it has an artsy film look to it.
There is certainly a quality to the 5D files... I think that maybe the pixels were larger and spaced further apart on the sensor. I think that the 6D mk1 may well indeed have similar qualities.
It's not until you compare the colours and skin tones with over cameras you realise how good it is, fujifilm are great for colour to, the 5d mk3 is a great camera too
Hi, Richard! I don`t know if you spoke in one of the videos about batteries for 5d. I would like to know your opinion on the aftermarket batteries that can be found on the market. Thank you!
Wow. Excellent review Richard. I'm just waiting for my T90 to come back from repair but am also looking at getting into digital, most likely the Nikon D7000, but after watching this, it's got me thinking about the 5D mk1. I'm like you.... old school so I don't need auto this and that and certainly don't need lots of menus and the biggest screen on the back. Looking forward to part 2.
t90 and a 5d mk1 what more would you want. I would stick with Canon myself. I teach allot with Nikon cameras and i still think Canon are easier to use.
I have the EOS 5, 5DII and 5DIII, but I have never used the 5DI. I'm starting to think I should rectify that, partly for the camera itself and partly because I’m finding that gap in the models I have more and more annoying. I like simple menus and my 5DII is my favourite digital camera, unfortunately not my favourite camera as that is tied between my Zorki 4K (I got the one perfect specimen) and my Bronica ETRSi.
Hi Richard, Do you still shoot on the 5d? I shoot 5d, 7dii and 6d, but was contemplating selling the old beauty or perhaps not. I love the photos it produces (similar to my film cameras). Would you recommend keeping or selling in 2020? I was thinking other lens over keeping it, but in two minds.
WE would all be interested to know what you think about the three different files from the 5d mk1, 1dx and 6d2. Dynamic range etc thank you for your comment
Great video, about to watch the others too... The 5D Mk1 is such a classic! I had two but sold to upgrade to Mk3. I am securing one locally now. I don't know about Europe but down here Canon Officialdom refuse to touch them since they are discontinued and over 10 years old. Thank goodness I know a brilliant tech guy! Would you ship a 5D to South Africa? I am planning to buy at least 3 or 4 over time and MANY batteries so I can keep them going for a long long time. Cheers!
I have one now and I love it but, I'm considering getting a 6D to add for professional work to aid my 5D. I'm considering this because I ran into the mirror falling during a shoot and couldn't for a couple weeks because of it. Got it fixed but for reliability and higher iso performance, I'm thinking of getting a second body.
Recently bought the Mk1 and the 24-105 F/4 L IS and over the moon with the quality of the image and finding your videos very informative. I’m looking to protect the lens with a uv and polarising filter for my outdoor work but can’t decide on which to buy. What would you suggest?
Thanks Carly , the best way to describe it is... you find one perfect filter in Photoshop and have to keep putting all your files through it.... the 5d mk1 does it straight out of the camera. Like the fujifilm cameras do.
Hello Richard. Really enjoy your videos. I just picked up the 5D m1 and realized the 6D was amazing as well. So now I have the 6D and the 5D as my backup. I’m using the sigma art 85 on the 5D and the sigma art 35 on the 6D. What do you think about that setup ?
Hi, just wondering what do u think of using 5D classic for wedding photography in low light would u use it in wedding? and what lens would u use? anw, that a nice strap, I own a 5D classic as well ;)
I have always used the 5d mk1 for weddings with 24-105 and 70-200 f4 worth buying the 35mmf2 and 85mm1.8 for the evening reception. Strap was from eBay with a case for the Canon g10 I use it on both cameras
I love that you've stuck with same camera for so long. I think that most of us make purchases that we don't need instead of laying down cash on one good thing and sticking with it. Bravo. I do hope that you are able to shoot the 5d classic for life. It is a spetacular camera for sure. Only thing would be getting the shutter serviced.
The 5d is a classic camera now, but it is not really that old. Keeping the same camera will improve your photography, it has mine. I don't have to think about equipment when I am using the same camera all the time. Servicing the camera may be a problem in the future, but for now its still ok.
The camera will have to be replaced at some stage, but I am sure a Canon 5D mk4 would be fine. I have just edited another wedding in lightroom today, and I still love the images that come out of it.
I bought two used DSLR. A Canon Rebel, and a Nikon D50. I'm very happy with both purchase. Many years ago I couldn't afford any of them. So I bought others like Carena manual 35mm film camera, Minolta Maxxum 35mm film camera, fujifilm digital point and shoot 35mm camera. All are very good. So this year my opportunity arrived that I could afford two DSLR cameras within a $100 budget. Both were $45.00 each. People are upgrading. I jump to the used bargains. Win, win.
One day i will just go and buy one of these guys. I own 3 FF prime lenses, 35 f/2 IS, 85 f/1.8 and 50 stm and that will be all i will need. I will leave apcs body if i need second camera for events coverage but i really like to shoot for relaxation and i think mkI will be perfect for it..
Great video and I gotta agree with most of what you say. Surprised a little by your views on the MK2 - I aspired to own that camera one day but caught the mirrorless bug and never looked back. Well I did look back but by then the MK2 looked like just a small upgrade over the MK1 and I got a Sony A7R2 instead. I only use old legacy glass on my cameras and the Sony mount can adapt just about anything and magnified view and focus peaking are great for nailing focus. The EVF and live view make getting the exposure correct a little easier and image stabilisation is another good plus. However I completely agree with what you say regarding keeping things simple so you can get on with taking pictures. Leica have the right idea in that respect but most other manufacturers are adding superfluous features to try and out-do the competition. It's quite a con really and admit to succumbing to the BS quite a lot myself. You've got me wanting to take my Canon 5D out again now - it's been in the cupboard for a while. Thanks for the trip down memory lane and reminding me about what's really important..
The 5Ds (not R) is the best of the 5Dseries. 5D1,5D2's focusing system will frustrate most. I missed valuable moments with the 5D mark II and I HATED that camera. I loved the 7D.
Hello Richard. I wanted ask you. I was really interested in the sigma 85mm art canon. Do you know if that lens fits the M1. I couldn’t find any info on that.
Just ordered one. Interesting that you use a single card slot for wedding work. I assume you’ve never had a card corrupt. Does that ever make you nervous?
Highly recommend Duracell compatibles (can buy direct from their website) for the 5D classic and 5DII, they also supply charger. Performs better than Canon originals. Would avoid used Canon batteries.
I think this is the 3rd time viewing this one. Just gets better and better! My 5D classic (serial# 1020xxxxxx) seems to be getting a lot of noise even at lower ISO and using wider aperture lens. Is it possible that my sensor is failing? The rest of the circuitry appears to function as it always did. I really hope I do not have to place my favorite camera in the closet. Any thoughts including anything I may be doing wrong?
when you say amazing colour Richard, when at a wedding do you shoot raw or jpeg, as if you shoot raw every photo has to be edited to bring everything out of the file. the raw files rooc are not that interesting in colour saturation ect ect. until lighroom that is.thanks in advance for your answer
sorry for the delay answering this question busy year. I can tell you the JPG files out of the 5D mk 1 classic are better than what I can get out of the RAW file in Lightroom. I shoot RAW and JPG at weddings and back the jpg upto my iphone. The Jpg with neutral pict style selected in camera are some of the best files i have seen out of a camera( colour, skin, transition of tones) I do the like the 5D mk3 for the same reason, just not get on with the auto focus system on it. You have to remember that there are so many variables and personal taste plays a big part.
Hi Richard. Thanks for your testimonies about the 5d classic. I just got my second 5d classic, but unfortunately, the mirror fell off. Can you help me where I can have it repaired or replaced? Thanks!
Wex photo/video have a sister co. Fixation. I had same problem with one of mine a few years ago and then from Canon web site sent it to, think Lehmans or similar name, fixed free as a known problem but I think you have to pay now.
I'm still amazed at the quality of my landscape photos produced by my t3i (600D) and wondering if there will be much improvement when I hopefully bye a 6d or maybe a 5di or 5dii. What do you think?
The word quality is the one to think about before changing cameras. I have got a 20 inch print of a sunflower in my hallway , the camera was a canon 350d with a 50mm 1.8. It's an amazing quality print produced by a professional printer with a very expensive rip between the computer and the printer. I love the colours from this early range of sensors, that is the one quality I am looking for, when you are moving from a modern sensor to an older one you will see a difference.
i use the eye fi pro card to transmit the raw and jpg files to my computer and ipad/iphone. Works well 90% of the time. I dont know about tethered shooting with the 5d does any here use it?
5D classic drivers are all Windows XP. Canon stopped support for this camera a few years ago. I have mine set up on Windows 7 as if running Vista, this works for tethered using EOS utility into Zoom Browser. alternatively you can run a virtual OS and install Windows XP on it. I do not know about Apple.
Thank you sir. Would love to see some tips on 5D workflow, especially with the 3200 ISO images using DPP or LR when you have if it is your interest. Thanks so much for sharing your expertise. Your explanation of why the 5D was both different and special for color was eye opening. Always loved the skin tones, but did not know why. I can't seem to separate myself from my 5D, so I guess we will continues as a team thanks to you and your videos.Cheers!
I have been using free version of (community edition) of noise reducer by Imagenomic for several years. It does a decent job. I think anything out of the 5D using 3200 ISO is a candidate for NR. Thank you. Can't wait for more videos.
i use lightroom turn off all sharpening and increase noise reduction. I never expect to get great sharp results. I look for lower contrast softer images.
Hiya. Great review, i really enjoyed it :). My friend offered me his D700 (replaced shutter n he's kinda into mirrorless i think) to me about the price second hand 5D M1(just a lil bucks more). With honest opinion, should i go to the great deal D700 or 5D M1? Thanx :) REPLY
Nice. I was out to find a used 5d and found one for 279 euros. A great price in Portugal considering it has 2 year warranty. I was warned that the sensor had fungus though. Took it to Canon and they said they do not have sensors for these cameras and could not do the service. Does that apply in the uk as well or does canon do the service for any and all parts?
So, back to the future...just watched this video and we are in 2019. How has it been those past 2 years? I am surprised you didn't go for the Mark II since it has just what's needed in terms of low light performance compared to the MkI. Or did I miss it in the video? Cheers. I will have a look at your website. I have been a Fuji shooter for over a year now and after considerations, I might be upgrading to an old Canon :D #worldisgonemad
You should write a book called "12 years with the 5d classic." Put your best pictures in it.
I'm certain it would sell.
The 5d classic holds a special place in the hearts of many.
good idea thanks
yes and i will be the one will buy and shipped in philippines 🇵🇭
Thanks for the video. I'm so glad I found the 5D Classic once again, this time I will keep it...mint condition for $240.00
12 years a slave 😂
But that was part of the experience.
thanks for your great comment
Are you sure 12 years is enough time to really judge a camera?
Good point i will give it another year lol.
still good at 14 ish years still using
Haha
@@RichardBarleyphoto haha, fucking legend
we print 30 x 40 with the processed raw files from our 5d Mk 1's and they are spectacular
sounds great
Just bought 5D mk1 today and I can't wait till it gets here :D Thank You for giving me some relief until I get my own :)
Just uploading more videos about the 5d check back this week
Oh goodygoodygoody! Post office won't be able to deliver mine until next week so videos are appreciated :)
I bought my 5D on craigslist for $280.00. It came with the grip, 4 batteries, 2 chargers and 1 16GB card. Buy local, this things cost more on eBay and you get less stuff. Now I'm thinking of buying a Mark ii. I love the 5D's!!!!
that is a real bargain how are you getting on with your 5D. Please comment here. sorry its taken two years to read all the comments.
I'm still using mine in 2022. Had it since 2008 and have used it A LOT! In pouring rain, in underwater housing doing surf photography, photo journalism, macro, landscape, skiing.. Only problem is finding really good batteries these days. This camera delivers pictures of a quality that far surpasses most photographers needs.
i agree its still my favourite, i have been using the 5dmk4 for weddings this year - i still prefer the mk1 images
I only wish that one day Canon can once again release a FF camera without Video, Wi-Fi, GPS and all those craps that I don't need as a photographer.
they are sticking to what they do best at Canon, the xt1 by fuji worked well for me but it was just not snappy enough. slow to use
I dont feel like it's that slow to use.
When I first got it I was a bit thrown off by how slow everything was but now somehow it feels faster.
glad you like the 5d, I am trying to use the mk 4 a little but still prefer the mk1
You know what I really like about the 5D Classic?
The black hotshoe rails.
Canon's been making them metal/silver lately, not black anymore.
I literally just bought one with a grip, batteries, and a 50mm len. This is going to be my first camera and I got it for less than 500.00
How did you get on with your 5D please leave another comment to let everyone know
Hi, I got my 5d in 2005, I was going to sell it for $350 with the batterypack, I rrcieved more than 5 offers but I couldn't let it go.
This now my oldest and main camera to use now.
enjoy your camera - i still use it
I still have mine. I got the 20D, the 5D and now the OMD-EM1, all used and for small money. I am hardly able to sell the Canons to get more lenses for the Olympus, which now will save my neck and my back. Those two Canons have a nice built quality and sensors. The 5D is amazing
thanks for your comment
Amen to this review. I'm a fellow 5D mk1 fan. Probably like you I learnt photography pre digital era. When I first used this I was hooked. I still use mine along with my 1D mk 3. The 5D is a work horse. I use the viewfinder, not the screen, and I'm of an era where you know what you need settings wise in your head.this camera is as close as you get to film from a digital. I love it, I'm never getting rid of it. Great video about a brill piece of kit.
Thanks for your comment
All the best.
thanks for your input, the 5d is hard not to like
thank you for your comment, they are unique cameras and hard to beat I think.
I love my 5D mk1 for portraits, I use an old analogue Pentax f2 fixed prime with adaptor and its amazing
thats sounds like a great setup
"Less is more" not only applies to the camera, but to your mindset and then your work. Simple images are stronger than busy ones.
On a separate note, love the shutter sound.
i agree thanks for your comment
Just bought 5D mk1 today and the 85 1.8. I'm sure I will love my portraits! :D
great combination - i dont think you will ever want to sell either
Hello, in my opinion, as a nikon d750 user for a long time. I bought original 5d for about 2 years now. And image that produced is i can say “mature”. It deliver good colours and rich tones, feel a bit filmic too ❤. Whan we need is just a bit slow down our process and take photo with passion, that’s all u need, no need fast, no need rush. Just enjoy your time
i agree, slow down its improves your photography
When I decided to go full frame and bought a 5d classic, once I saw the stunning results this camera produces I bought a second one for spare. Most of the time I don't even need the raw files, the jpegs straight from the camera are that good.
thanks for your comment
Canon 5d immortal classic in 2022. Still going strong.
Wonder what the total shutter count is after 12 years
Gennady Golovkin The classic goes up to 150,000 shutters so I’m guessing around the 90,000 range
To be fair, all you can do is estimate the shutter count, as there is no way to actually get a reading with this camera. I think I heard somewhere that Canon techs can access the shutter count with their low-level diagnostic tools, but outside of that, it's just not possible. I know because I've owned this camera for a couple years.
they just start to sound slightly clangy when they get really old but still work like an old Volkswagen
i put them buy my ear and fire the shutter this gives me an idea of how worn out they are, check the flash contacts to
12mp is all you really need, this is a perfect portrait or landscape camera.
I agree most of the R&D is on video. The high ISO is down to software.
Homestonearts I just bought a 5d want a 6d next. Planning on spending money on some lenses first though.
The simplicity of this camera is great for beginners since it encourages users “how to think” about photography... not “what to think”.
this is a great comment, i agree, 85mm 1.8 with bw great
What settings dis you use for BW? Did you shoot them in Jpeg?
@@waltherziemerink Camera settings are subject, location and time of day dependent. I shoot in only RAW. I convert everything to DNG for my “digital” neg storage.
I am about to buy a 5d classic. I always wanted one (because of its unique output) and they are finally getting to a point where they are easy to find for just a couple hundred dollars. I loved this video. You come across as very genuine and honest. I'd trust that what you are saying about the "look" must be true.
thanks for your comment sorry about the late reply so many comments
@@RichardBarleyphoto Wow, I had forgotten that I left this comment. Fastforward to 2023, and I have owned the 5d classic for quite awhile, and I absolutely love it.
Awesome video/review. I brought the 5d mark iv and returned it within a week and decided to get the 5d mark iii. I was upgrading from a canon rebel t6i which I still have. You are right as a photographer I don't need 4K video wifi gps etc.... in my camera. That's why I chose the Mark iii. I'm hoping I can find a good Mk1 because I do need a another full frame professional camera that's affordable.
i would like to print a 16x12 inch print from a 5d mk4 and the same from a 5dmk1 to see how far they have come, not far i would guess
Great comment, you can tell you are using the mk1 Classic, seven years and the mk2 is about £600 second hand now,
Hi Moeran1944, I am shooting almost only portraits (not studio but often outdoors or on location) and starting getting paid jobs.
Easy to use and spectacular results.
thanks for your comment, I am still using them
@@RichardBarleyphoto Im having problems with sensor cleaning. Blotchy at F 8. Any tips to help?

Richard Barley and Susan Stripling (NYC wedding photographer) both use the 24-105 and 70-200 lenses as their primary lenses. Brilliant! Must be something to it!! LOL Thank you Richard.
it makes life allot easier at the weddings having these two zooms
I have ended up using the "C" mode as a quick indoor setting to get around the lack of a dedicated ISO button. 1/80, F4, ISO 1600 is my base. seems to work for most scenes.
good idea C is useful, I tried it for a while but went back to just M and the ISO button, which I agree could be better
I used the eos5 before the 5dmk1 for weddings. Thanks for your comment it helps everyone
Bought my 5D a month ago for $250 in Russia. Using with 50 1.8, planning to buy 24-70 f 2.8. But even with shitty lense 5D produces fantastic images. Love it so much and hope that shutter won't die next couple of years)
it will keep going- they are great

I love my 70D but I bought one of these and I kinda love it a ton. It's no replacement but they complement each other well. I don't see me buying anything from this point on.

Has anybody got one for sale? eBay is such a pain lol
could you post a photo link of it on flickr

good point i will give up
@@RichardBarleyphoto I like this, nothing wrong with this. I just might buy this camera!!

The 5D3 (and 5D4) let you customize the "SET" button as ISO. I always use this shortcut.
I still use canon 1000d for 6 years now.
keep your 1000d as well the files are great from that camera, glad you enjoyed it
Ive been a Nikon photographer most of my life at one stage running my own modelling agency training new and prospective models, male and female.
Glad you like the 5D thanks for your comment
great info. thanks for the effort and sharing. i look forward to additional insights about the 5dmk1 files. thumbs up.
any 5d classic users want to share their exposure thinking? it seems like with the 5d classic you can overexpose a touch since the light roll-off is quite lovely. using a histogram, expose to the right? if so, how far?
What else can I say ??
that's great to hear
I love my 5d mk1 and my EOS 1 .... they're digital and analogue brothers, and I'll use them until they drop.
I've kept all of my cameras over the years, but these are my all time favourites.
It's a great system , I wonder what they will do next. A 100 mp sensor maybe
Thank you for the review. i got my 5D with battery grip and EF 28-80mm / 3.5-5.6 for £250. I will invest on a good lense to go with this Legend.
thanks for your comment, i remember your lens . is it good?
I got lucky to have found a 5d with under 6k shutters for 300 USD near me and i love it perfect no BS Full frame camera
Mad about the ISO button too. Auto ISO fixes it to some extent; MkIII and 6D (possibly MkII too) allow to link the SET button to changing ISO manually via the top dial, which would be great to have on this one.
Auto Iso can be useful with manually setting the shutter speed and Iso thanks for your comment, sorry for the 2 year delay getting back to you
Love my 5Dc!! I've been using it for 3 years for everything photography. Definitely great for portraits, skin tones are amazing. Pairing it up with the 70-200mm f4 is a badass combo! The simplicity of it is definitely a bonus too. Great review!
5DC plus 70-200 f4 my favourite set up to
My only L lens at this moment is the 70 - 200 F4 and I dont feel I'm getting the most out of it on my crop sensor body (650D) and so I wanted to explore the world of full frame. Something is pulling me towards the 5D mk1. I've not seen a single bad review of it as yet. For studio portrait work, is this really a combination of body and lens that will stand up to say a 6D or 6D mk 2?
Here I am in 2021 and got my first 5D
congratulations welcome to the 5d classic club
I just bought a 5d with a 50mm 1.8.. To me the image does look like film, but with much better shadow detail. I like it.. 120 bucks..

I bought a used 5D classic for $250 Canadian about 3 years ago, now they are around $500-$600 Canadian on ebay. I love this camera, so like a film camera.
are you still using the 5d, please let everyone know by commenting back on this page thanks.
I think that the 6D mk1 may well indeed have similar qualities.
the 6d looks different the 5dclassic is unique. thanks for your comment. 5d is sharp. I like the 6d layout of buttons
FINALLY someoneagrees with me that the 5d has incredible colours (my favourite colours on any camera).

Hi Richard,
Do you still shoot on the 5d? I shoot 5d, 7dii and 6d, but was contemplating selling the old beauty or perhaps not. I love the photos it produces (similar to my film cameras). Would you recommend keeping or selling in 2020? I was thinking other lens over keeping it, but in two minds.
keep the 5D, I still use them
Found mine today for $200 (canadian) at a thrift shop.
I'm really liking it.
welcome to the 5d classic owner club , thats a great buy, thanks for your comment😀
I just bought the 5D Classic to use next to the 1DX and 6D2. Its a perfect combination :)
Cheers!
sorry i only just got your comment about the 5d always best to send a contact form from my website to contact me kind regards rich
Great review, thanks a lot man
thanks for watching, more coming this year
ive just purchased one of these and was wondering if a 10d battery grip would work with the 5d mk1?
sorry missed your comment, i dont think it will
Hi Richard
Just a question about the battery you use , are you using a
Genuine battery or after market one ?
Regards tim .....
A mixture to be honest,
I have one now and I love it but, I'm considering getting a 6D to add for professional work to aid my 5D. I'm considering this because I ran into the mirror falling during a shoot and couldn't for a couple weeks because of it. Got it fixed but for reliability and higher iso performance, I'm thinking of getting a second body.
I am planning to try a 6d in the future with a 40mm pancake and the 85mm 1.4 is on another 6d
Recently bought the Mk1 and the 24-105 F/4 L IS and over the moon with the quality of the image and finding your videos very informative. I’m looking to protect the lens with a uv and polarising filter for my outdoor work but can’t decide on which to buy. What would you suggest?
Uv filter doesnt protect the lens. If You drop the lens and filter breaks it will scratch the lens glass from the inside. I only use the lens hood.
i always use hoya, email me from my website and i will send you a link
I like this; nice and simple, but gets the job done. You are the second person I've heard that has said that the classic 5D has a special look to it.
All good but remember to check any BF/FF. It is Sigma after all.
sounds like a great set up is it going well?
Win, win.
Thanks for your comment
One day i will just go and buy one of these guys. I own 3 FF prime lenses, 35 f/2 IS, 85 f/1.8 and 50 stm and that will be all i will need. I will leave apcs body if i need second camera for events coverage but i really like to shoot for relaxation and i think mkI will be perfect for it..
did you buy one?
I found one that's in mint condition however the mirror fix is not there, would you still say that its a "go to"?
i buy them without the mirror fix done now, just use them and if it comes off you can get it back on
Great video and I gotta agree with most of what you say.
Thanks for your detailed comment it helps people here
The 5Ds (not R) is the best of the 5Dseries. 5D1,5D2's focusing system will frustrate most. I missed valuable moments with the 5D mark II and I HATED that camera. I loved the 7D.
thats interesting, why is the 5Ds better than the 5DSR?
great video! what is better, 5d or 1diii?
you will only find out by using them. the older sensor processor set up, i like allot. Saw a 1DS mk3 today tempted to buy one
1dIII ( not full frame) great for sports, wildlife. Totally different thing than the full frame 5d.
Hello Richard. I wanted ask you. I was really interested in the sigma 85mm art canon. Do you know if that lens fits the M1. I couldn’t find any info on that.
I dont use Sigma, can anyone else help, sorry
Great video Richard. Subscribed :)
great thanks for your comment
I just bought one secondhand. Thanks
Hope you enjoy it!
the best review ever
thank you
Just ordered one. Interesting that you use a single card slot for wedding work. I assume you’ve never had a card corrupt. Does that ever make you nervous?
i use a cf to sd card converter and an eye fi card. back up onto iphone as i go along.
Love the video! I wanted to know where can a buy a battery for the 5d classic?
Amazon ? Third party battery's are still around. The 30d and 40d take the same battery
Any thoughts including anything I may be doing wrong?
i dont know, try making brighter images reduces noise , sorry for the very very late reply so many comments got lost
when you say amazing colour Richard, when at a wedding do you shoot raw or jpeg, as if you shoot raw every photo has to be edited to bring everything out of the file. the raw files rooc are not that interesting in colour saturation ect ect. until lighroom that is.thanks in advance for your answer
sorry for the delay answering this question busy year.
Try fixation or did you get it fixed somewhere else?
Do you believe there would be a degradation in image quality by going to d 5D mki from a Canon t3i, are they not of the same vintage?
It didn't just start with the D500. My Nikon D700 has an ISO button on the top.
great camera the d700
Can you use it with a wireless transmitter?
yes you can thanks for your comment sorry for the late reply
How do you change the aperture?
I just got 5D mk1 this past weekend! I'm so happy with the pictures :) I was wondering, do you know any info about tethered shooting with 5D mk1?
i use the eye fi pro card to transmit the raw and jpg files to my computer and ipad/iphone.
I do not know about Apple.
thanks for your reply for Olivia, I use the eye fi card and transfer jpg files and sometimes RAW
Hi Richard, got any 5d mark I for sale? I want to jump to full frame, regards.
Sorry only just got your comment, always submit a form from my website with enquiries, i dont keep track of comments thanks for your comment
Putting all the the "Camera X Long term review | After 3 weeks" to shame! :D
Enjoy all of your videos Richard. Thank you. Do you use back button focus on the 5D?
no i use the shutter release, focus then re-compose
Thank you sir. Would love to see some tips on 5D workflow, especially with the 3200 ISO images using DPP or LR when you have if it is your interest. Thanks so much for sharing your expertise. Your explanation of why the 5D was both different and special for color was eye opening. Always loved the skin tones, but did not know why. I can't seem to separate myself from my 5D, so I guess we will continues as a team thanks to you and your videos.Cheers!
3200 ISO images can take allot of noise reduction and I make them look like the old scotch colour film , more videos coming
Thanx :)

thanks for your comment
Hi Richard , Do you use two 5D for your weddings
Always used the 5DMk1 from 2006. Used the Canon EOS 5 film camera before that. Did try a Fuji XT1 last year but have come back to Canon now.
Tiago Dias Send an email to independent repair shops.
fixation in the uk
How would you compare Nikon D3400 with this canon D5?does it worth the swop?
Stay with the system your in, decide early then buy your lenses
If You're into Nikon You can't go wrong with the used d700.
So, back to the future...just watched this video and we are in 2019. How has it been those past 2 years? I am surprised you didn't go for the Mark II since it has just what's needed in terms of low light performance compared to the MkI. Or did I miss it in the video? Cheers. I will have a look at your website. I have been a Fuji shooter for over a year now and after considerations, I might be upgrading to an old Canon :D #worldisgonemad
hi Jason, still using the 5d classic for weddings and portraits. I am considering buying a 5D to do more video work thanks for your comment
I am considering the 5D mk1. Do you have any recommendation on which lens to get for fashion photography? Cheers
24-105 mk1 or mk2 and the 85mm 1.8 ( use at f2) and the 135mm f2
What if I considered the 5D mark3, what lenses should I consider for fashion photography?
i would take a look at the art sigma 85mm
