That was awesome! I could have watched that all day. It was nice to see what all these numbers look like in the real world between these trucks. It's really all about the seat of the pants feel and drivability than anything else. Because 1, 2, or 3 truck lengths in a all out race really amounts to nothing at the end of the day. It's just bragging rights and I much prefer reliability and longevity over that. If anyone really wants to improve their drivability in a 3rd gen Tacoma, 4 or 6 cylinder, just get a Pedal Commander. I installed one in my 22' 4 cylinder Tacoma and it made a world of difference in the enjoyment of driving the truck. It's like night and day. I have no affiliation with Pedal Commander. Just trying to be helpful. A word about the brake test. I'm sure the 10' difference between the 3rd and 4th gens was due mostly to the tires. So that was a nice point to settle. Drum brakes on the back of a pickup really don't make the stopping distance any longer when the bed is empty. I'm sure the ABS had to dial back the braking power to the discs to keep the rear wheels from locking up due to the light weight of the bed. Where the discs will shine is in their fade resistance and stopping power down long grades and especially when loaded or pulling a trailer. And another big plus is they are just a lot easier to change when they are due for replacement. It's definitely a move in the right direction. Thanks for another great test as usual. 👍

Great video!!👍 There is no question that I would choose the new Turbo 4 cyl over the current 3.5 V6. I had a 3.5 V6 for about 3 yrs and it was a disappointment the whole time I had it.
Really the only thing that makes me want to get rid of my 3rd Gen Taco is the terrible gearing where the Trans just can't decide what gear it wants to be in on the interstate even with just the slightest incline. Otherwise I really love the thing.
I had a 3rd Gen TRD OR for about 3 yrs and the way the truck felt while driving was very disappointing. At one point I even thought about swapping the engine, since it bothered me so much. You could re-gear your truck and that would help, but that depends on what kind of driving you do. I now have a 2nd GEN 4 cyl 5 spd, that I enjoy driving a LOT more than the 3rd GEN I had. The 2nd GEN I have, is a lot more responsive and a lot more fun to drive. NOTE: I enjoy driving my 2nd GEN more, even when it was bone stock, it's not stock anymore 🙂
I want to see you guys do some work based comparisons. Load an air compressor, some sheets of wood, some 2X4s, some pipes, some nail/screw boxes, some buckets of stuff, and hitch up a small trailer. Then drive 40 miles through traffic and go up a grade then down a grade. Which brakes are the smoothest? Which brakes seemed to overheat. How easy was it to tie down a load of stuff? Which vehicle has the least amount of plastic parts? Did the bed get all scratched up? I am especially curious how well the aluminum clad tail gate holds up to abuse. How easy was it to load and unload the stuff? Which has the shortest turn radius? Which is more comfortable to drive when loaded? Which stops the fastest when loaded? How much can be carried? I am not sure how valuable it is to see which is the fastest in the 1/4 mile for a mid sized pickup truck but it's a hell of a lot of fun to watch it!
I figured something out yesterday about the new gen frontier tires after nearly being in an accident. The oem fitment are the equivalent of Walmart Michelin. Built to a lower spec. Same for the hankooks on my pro4x. They are absolutely deadly on a wet road. I picked the truck up from dealer I thought oh good it's got at pros on it. I had read a lot of positive reviews when tire shopping for my old frontier. Absolutely the worst tire I've ever seen on a truck for wet conditions. I've seen others mention this for the Michelin as well. The guys here local use GM trucks for work that is all they will fit on them because traction and wear is so good.
Have the new Tundra and love it. That said, it does not fit in my garage and really thinking about making the switch. Hard to do it though with the torque and huge interior space. We will see. Great video! Keep it up.

The iforce Max weighs 600 lbs more than the non-hybrid Tacoma and its only making an extra 48 hp. I bet its only slightly faster. Look at the Tundra iforce vs iforce max reviews and you will see the iforce max is slightly faster 0-60 but by the 1/4 mile the regular iforce is actually reeling it in and has a higher trap speed. Their 1/4 mile times are pretty close. I dont think the Colorado has to worry. The hybrid Tacoma is not picking up 8 tenths of a second.
The Grand Highlander has the exact I-force Maxx drive train the Tacoma will be getting. It's only a few hundred pounds different in weight with AWD than the new Tacoma, and it does 0-60 in 5.5 seconds. It will simply spank that thing
@@dalea4350 Its not exactly the same at all. The 2.4L Hybrid Max in the highlander is transverse and has an electric motor that is a totally separate unit that only drives the rear axle. On the trucks like the Tacoma and Tundra, there is a single electric motor sandwiched between the engine and transmission in a longitudinal configuration. The Grand Highlander also makes 362 hp to the Tacoma's 326. I think the iForce Max will be slightly faster, but not much and wont close the .8 second gap between it and the Colorado. There will be no spanking.

The engine bay of that colorado is well organize compare to the tacoma ... even ford Ranger looks like a teenager bedroom
Tacoma is FAR better
@@DaleWilly why are you saying is Far better you dont even know this new engine 😅
Gosh, Have I been waiting for a Video Like this!
All the Generations of Tacomas Tested, along with a Competitor!
I'm not expecting the 3.5L NA V6 to win, but this whole video comes to show how the Tacoma Got it's Reputation of Reliability, and is hoping to carry that into the Next Generation and Thensome!
Appreciate the Content as always, TFL! Keep Up the Good Work!
Greetings from Braves Country!
Considering they have been using 4 cylinders in The Toyota Hilux Since the first generation, I'd say it would be pretty reliable.
The 2nd generation Tacoma is missing.
@@SylvainsShipyardyell ,l wonder why?
@@rickeycooley9139Because it would be tied with the 4th gen 😂
Great video!!👍
There is no question that I would choose the new Turbo 4 cyl over the current 3.5 V6.
I had a 3.5 V6 for about 3 yrs and it was a disappointment the whole time I had it.
Great trucks, but it’s definitely 4-cyl power with V8 fuel economy
Pickup truck drag race cool… *returns after making a fresh cup of coffee*
…oh wow, just in time to see the results!
Andre is just so proud of His Colorado.
Way to go Andre! Chevy Colorado for the win!
You guys should've included the 4L taco!
Really the only thing that makes me want to get rid of my 3rd Gen Taco is the terrible gearing where the Trans just can't decide what gear it wants to be in on the interstate even with just the slightest incline.
Otherwise I really love the thing.
I love my 3rd Gen manual, really perfects the truck imo.
TUNE IT PEOPLE
@@abou824same here - had 2017 auto - no like - 23’ manual and love it!
It does that because it’s trying to find the best MPG 👍🏼
Waiting to see the 405hp Ranger Raptor vs these pickups. Great video as always.
These Taco trims wouldn’t compete with the Raptor.
Fuel Efficiency Loop, please. And, please bring along Andre's Colorado to compare it too... 😊😊😊
MPG loop on the new Tacoma is coming in a few days!
Hopefully with and again without that front spoiler? Thanks for doing it. I know gas and time is not cheap.
@@TFLtruck Cool. Thanks!
I have similar Michelin tires on my frontier, and they seem to be oriented to low rolling resistance than traction.
Love the new Frontier
Keep it up.
Amazing how much faster Andres Colorado was than the new Tacoma.
Far better looking as well
Imagine how much faster it could be if it has cruise control
It’s a classic case of the tortoise and the hair. When your Chevys, breaking down and leaving you stranded, the Toyota will still be cruising right along. for many years after you’ve replaced your Chevy.
@@reggie2334ableremains to be seen with the unproven new turbos with 48% new components
@reggie2334able lol this new Tacoma will be just like the new Tundra, a piece of trash.
I love how the modded 1st gen came in and creamed everything else in the quarter mile lol, John's truck is one spicy Taco.
Great video guys, ignore all the trolls. The Colorado and canyons definitely have more speed and the better looks IMO
Hell yeah
Junk
That's a Cadillac motor in the Colorado
@@ibrahimbashir6634The worst vehicle I've ever owned was a 3rd gen Tacoma.
@@lonniewimble5847 it was first in the Silverado then two years later they put it in the Cadillac.
That super charger made the winder noise
Bring a 4.0 Taco next time 💪🏽
Will do.
Yall delusional.
You should used the lightest trims with the most powerful engines. Also you should have brought a comparable D41 Frontier
I'd still rather have NA engine. Let's see that turbo motor get to 765k miles.
3.5 is a tuners dream too!
umm it WILL, it is made in JAPAN
@@nbaldo003well it is evidently clear that Toyota under tuned it on the Tacoma. The same motor makes 314hp and 290 Tq in other models. Also revs way easier in Lexus models.
Okay, as much as I like the channel but everything you did, rolling race and brake test and everything, it feels like a carwow thing.
3:34 weigh the same??... Merry Christmas Nathan.😂
Great video and merry Christmas all! Hope Toyota used better steel on new tacoma frames
Chevy THUNDER!!!
I own a 3rd gen 🌮, but would love to see the new Frontier race, that seems like a pretty slick truck.
Would love to see a mid size truck drag race. Frontier, Ranger, Tacoma, Colorado etc.
I like the older v6 look. For few small difference the older one is better.
We've had Toyota trucks in our family since 1989. The conversation is about reliability not necessarily speed and only time will tell if the turbo motor or components will stand the test of time.
All you have to do is compare the new generation Tundras to the old generation. The new ones are having so many issues. The same will result to the new Tacoma. I have a 30+ year old Toyota Pickup with the 22RE. It is even slower and more underpowered than the Tacoma. But 30+ years later, it is still on the road with 306,000 miles. That is why I buy Toyota.
Rear discs yes, as a fleet manager , turbo repair/replacement ain't cheap!
Love it but I'll stick with my 19. She's all dialed in.
Same hear. Maybe not fast, but my 19’ TRD Pro MT6 gives me confident miles of smiles! … Toyota?! For that price, can ya plz put a cover over that rats nest engine? my OCD is killing me looking at that engine bay.😂 Love these these videos gentlemen 👍
I wish I had just kept my 2004 Tacoma TRD Xtra Cab 4x4. I traded it in with 220k miles on it for 2007 FJ TRD Special Edition. I really liked it also but the Taco was the best truck I ever owned. Also had 83 and 88 Toy 4x4's.
No longer want to deal with Ca smog laws so building a 73 K20.
C’mon, my sisters razor scooter could beat the old v6 Tacoma
I drag race every truck before I buy it, because how fast it accelerates is how you know it’s the best.
LOL. I am sure you are on a special list of the local dealerships now. 😃
I would have loved to see how the Toyota manual transmission did
I've never drag raced my M/T Tacoma, but that lower rear final drive really makes it feel faster. Still pretty slow tho.
I think 25 years in the future has already long come for Toyota. We've owned an '76 fj40, '95 2nd gen 4runner, '99 SC 3.4 4runner, '05 4.0 4runner, 2nd Gen trd Taco, '07 4.7 gx470. All super cool and super reliable off road vehicles. However it's hard for me to argue for them when my Rivian gets 75mpge and 11sec quarter mile. I think theres no need to wait another 25 years, Toyota.
But how many 20k battery packs will it have gone through in 25 years?
I am in a bolt ev rental car here in the NYC metro area. I'm seeing level 2 chargers in the 35cent per kWh to 59cent kWh range. I saw a DCFC at 69 cent per kWh. These charger prices are some BS. Evs are going to be impractical and more expensive to run than ICE.
Not many if the Prius Nimh batteries are any indication.@@DEPOT1DEPOT1
I love all the new trucks but I’ve been saying it for years. Their all just too expensive for the average person to realistically afford.
I’ll stick with my 4.0 taco, this new one is great for hauling lattes from your favorite Starbucks
The want to sell the new 24 Tacoma, I am still buying the v6 next week
I have a ‘17 off road 6 speed for 4 years now been a very reliable truck
This is a mistake. That car is ancient and outdated. Reliable sure but it’s slow and clunky. The driving ergos and interior are also awful. I sold mine for a Colorado and it’s so much nicer.
@@CDX7 Reliability is the only important factor for me. If I wanted fast, i'd get a Tesla.
it’s a truck people. .I have a 22 trd off road w/6’ bed and a tune does wonderful for my needs . I owned turbo cars and i can tell you i always had a heavy led foot and at the end i got worst gas mileage.
Expecting an off road video of new tacoma
Great video as always gents!
The new truck is absolutely hideous looking. You couldn't pay me to drive that pile.
Agreed! 3rd gen still looks better
Ok, that was fun watching the 97 toyota! sweet ride!
Even if Andrea had got traction that standard transmission is slower than the automatic.
Next they should do a H2H race towing matching trailers.
Yeah, these things cost too much these days.
I won’t ever go past the Gen 2 Tacoma. I currently have a 2012 and love it
I still think my 21 Taco TRD Pro 6 speed manual ov tuned would take it if I got a decent launch with the 4:30 gears and the 7,250 rpm over rev... Wish they would try a tuned Taco last Gen vs this new gen
Right. I have a 21 manual OR with a K&N intake with a flow master exhaust. Ov tune. I guarantee it would be a different story.
@@hardenxx1335Totally Agree Have the TRD exhaust and the Afe intake. Pretty sure once she starts Reving up the last gen would take it. Off the line it's hard to beat a turbo.
That first gen is SICK
Wow, i thought the colorado would have been much faster. The I-force Maxx should spank that thing. Can't wait to see that.
1997 beat them all easily when it was in 4x4 because of wheel spinning at 15.4
I like how they purposely drove the 1st gen badly so the new Tacoma shines.
I wonder how well my 22 frontier would do against the new tacoma
I’ll be more than happy to stick with my 2022 Frontier.
Long term? Probably better. Your frontier is basically a gen 3 Tacoma with a better transmission. I’m not sure how reliable the engine is on those tho. But I have seen some high mile examples with frequent oil changes.
I drive a 2000 manual supercharged 4Runner for a reason. It was the last year Toyota made a manual 4Runner, and they haven't been as powerful nor as fun as the 24 year-old one. Happy to see manual and forced induction making a return in the Tacoma.
Need a 2nd Gen in the mix!
I don't even have to watch the whole video.. the Colorado prob smoked them all lol. I had a 2001 Tacoma S-Runner with the factory S/C, and it beat the factory Ford Lightning that year in trucking magazine tests. It was the sports truck of the year. I miss that truck!
Actually the 97 Tacoma with the new magnuson tvs1320 supercharger beat them all at the last run
Hmm i wonder how it will do against a 4.0L in the second gen
Supercharged yours I am pretty sure u can get up to 600hp from that engine
@@samzy924 Not even close. I own a supercharged 2015.
@@samzy924cant pass 500hp without turbo. supercharger cant move enough air unless you get some ginormous 3.0 whipple blower and remember this v6 has to turn it. it’s not a 4.6+ liter engine. at that point single turbos your best bet. ask me how i know
OP- stock 4.0 would have ended right between them. just beating the 3.5 but losing to the 2.4. i will say when you tune the 3.5 the 4.0 becomes irrelevant. 3.5s stock is slow but tech on it once tuned puts it leagues ahead of the 4.0. so if you’re gonna mod 3.5s your best bet is
GREAT video guys made me smile a whole bunch 😅😊🎉
Glad you enjoyed it.
The Chevy only made one run then had to go get rebuilt😂
Not that Caddy motor. I have it in my Ct4, it's strong.
It could get rebuilt faster than a Tacoma can enter a freeway.
@@endlessnameless3996 Very easy to do so. If I wanted a fast 0-60, I would've gotten a Tesla.
Sorry but I will keep my v6 sr5 instead of getting the new overclocked 4cyl.
