The delay is necessary to allow pressure to drop to a safe level, before the action opens. Savage made a pretty good video about this, when the A17 was first introduced.
I had one ordered since shot show debut. Finally got it a week ago. Broke barrel in with about 50 rounds at 100 yards. Averaged 2” groups (my Bmag 17 WSM shoots 1” groups). Bedded front pillar and ordered piccatinny rail.

I have two 17wsm the first is the Savage b mag with the boyds thumb hole stock. I lapped the barrel in and glass bedded it. I have Vortex glass on it with a suppressor and it is a one holer at 100 yrds. The second is a Jard 72 which is an AR frame. I have night vision on it as I do a bit of night calling. The Jard shoots better then I can. I have shot coyotes at 300 yrds and they just drop dead. The Jard is suppressed as well. The only issue is getting ammo for them. I loaded up when I bought them but I will run out of ammo some time. I have 9 coyote/varmint rifles but the 17 WSM gets the most use.

Thank you for replying to my comment Richard. I watched the two videos you have on this rifle. I was looking for two, one for me and one for my son, called Savage many times and they told me they gonna start production last fall, when to the gun store, place my order on August and after six months but I quit. Canceled the order and get two Ruger Precision. Let me ask you a question, do you think the Savage BMag it’s a better option?
I bought the Bmag back when it first hit the shelves about 9 or 10 years ago and I love it. The .17WSM ammo is not the cheapest and when you put it in a semi-auto, you'll tend to shoot a lot more. I like bolt actions, they seem to encourage you to take your time and make, well placed, accurate shots. The Ruger Precision is a great rifle too, both rimfire and center fire.
That might be a little tough. I use several different tools. The most important one is a good sharp knife. A good set of stitching chisels, whatever spacing you prefer for your project. Some type of grooving tool. As for stamping tools, that will depend on your design. You know, this would be a great topic for a video. Stay tuned, I may see about doing it this weekend!
@@SmallCaliberArmsReview thanks, I'd like to try and make one for my man with no name. Just didn't know the tools you used for the Pale rider, stitching tools
@SmallCaliberArmsReview the popularity of that tiny round annoys me. People love it. They use it for animals far too large. The wsm is the only rim fire I use for coyote and bobcat.
I am not going to bash the 17 WSM. If it suits your needs, and it's good for you then have at it. 6 plus years ago, I wanted to do more prairie dog hunting since I retired. I had always hunted them in MT a day or 2 before the guys arrived for deer or afterward if we had time. So I reload and always used a 222 for PDs.. My 1st summer that I went PD hunting after retiring, I came back with a whole lot of ammo to reload from the .222 and had to limit shots due to barrel heat. I don't mind reloading, but when you are talking reloading in the upper 100s, it doesn't get to be fun. So, I wanted an alternative to reloading and more shooting. I looked at the 17 hmr and 17 wsm. Why I chose the 17hmr over the 17 wsm.. 1. Less noise 2 Ammo cost for the 17wsm is considerably more than for the 17hmr. Now 2 to 3 times more per shot!! 3. 17hmr ammo weighs a LOT LESS and takes up a LOT LESS space in your pockets. Try carrying 300 rounds or more of 17 wsm in the field with you!! I normally don't hunt near my truck, and I am out for hours away from it. I don't fell like going back to the truck for more ammo due to weight or storage issues. 4. I assume the barrel will heat up faster on 17wsm since it shoots a faster bullet. Also, I have never had a bolt action fail me, but I have had a semi-auto rifle fail me. I don't like fixing stuff in the field or have to go back to the truck to hopefully fix it. 5. I can get within 200 yds or slightly more for all the prairie dogs to get all the shooting that I want or can do. I know the 17wsm is capable of further range, but I don't have a need for that. 6. The 17hmr is powerful enough for PDs. I have shot countless doubles and one threesome at 92 yds. 7. I use a Votex 6.5x20-50 scope. I would think that once you approach the 300 yd range you might need more power for a small target like PDs to have consistent kills which probably means more money for a scope. Oh, you will pay more $$$ for the 17wsm versus the 17hmr also unless you get some kind of super deal. Those are just a few reasons I chose the 17hmr over the 17wsm. I have the Savage B17 bull barrel and love it with several of the 10 round clips that I carry with me. I have had that barrel very hot as well on occasions. I have created my own blower set up to cool down the barrel. Not only does barrel heat come from the bullet/gases, but in the summer in MT with no shade, you and the barrel are cooking in the sun before any ammo is fired! Of course, I would not use the 17hmr on coyotes or badger unless they are close enough for a headshot, and besides, if I especially wanted to hunt them, I would take the 222. OK, I have bored you, so have fun with either 17 hmr or 17 wsm or both. Guns are like tools. They all have a specific purpose. Use them wisely!
I agree! I love the .17HMR and I'm very fond of bolt action rifles. I thought I'd do a review of the A17WSM because someone out there will love it. Thanks for watching!
@@SmallCaliberArmsReview I have an hmr and a wsm for prairie dogs. The hmr is much more accurate when the wind is really calm. So I take the hmr on calm days and the wsm on windy days.
@rksando1 Yes, the wind affects the 17 HMR, but wind affects any bullet if the wind is strong enough. I carry a wind drift chart and aim off the target accordingly, which to me is a lot of fun to figure it out. The only time I can't use the HMR in the wind is when no matter what gun that I would have with me, the wind would move the gun on the tripod so much that I can't stay on target with any gun. I have never shot at a prairie dog off of a bench rest. I have only used a Harris bi-pod or Caldwell tri-pod (now Bog). For me, it's more like real hunting.
I put my name on a list a little over two years ago, I had completely forgotten about it when I got the call. Hopefully they'll start showing up on the shelves soon. The ammo is currently pretty hard to find. Thanks for watching!
I'm glad you finally got the rifle but what really impresses me is that you got some ammo too! I hope it's starting to hit the shelves again, I'm runnin' low!
Looks like a nice rifle but you still can't find the ammo for them at a reasonable price. There's none on the shelves of most stores so you have to deal with the price gouging online. So right now that's just an expensive paperweight.
If there's one in the chamber, its left with the safety on and turned slightly away from the target. On a bolt action, I will leave the spent cartridge in the chamber and still turn it slightly away. Thanks for watching!
I can't imagine the stopping production completely, I'm sure they do limited runs like many other calibers. The parent case is from an industrial powder actuated tool load that has been in production for many years.
@@SmallCaliberArmsReview Honstly, I’ve had issues with every savage I’ve owned. My friend has too. I had one of the first WSM’s that Savage made. The bolt one. It was horrible. A couple of things. Winchester can't make rimfire ammo that is accurate. Secondly the 17WSM is dead, ammo is too hard to find. Just go with a 17 Hornet of some flavor. You can atleast reload for it. Looks like a nice rifle but you still can't find the ammo for them at a reasonable price. There's none on the shelves of most stores so you have to deal with the price gouging online. So right now that's just an expensive paperweight.
I feel your pain! Hopefully it'll hit the shelves again soon. Thanks for watching!
All over the place. Just fell off my must buy list.
It does seem that way. It could just be this one. Thanks for watching!
won't be buying a 17WSM any time soon
I love the B-Mag, I'm not as keen on the semi-auto version. Thanks for watching!
Buddy, you walking around down range in front of a chambered rifle? 😲
If there's one in the chamber, its left with the safety on and turned slightly away from the target. On a bolt action, I will leave the spent cartridge in the chamber and still turn it slightly away. Thanks for watching!
No ammunition is available they have quit producing it
Great gun BUT no ammunition!!!
I can't imagine the stopping production completely, I'm sure they do limited runs like many other calibers. The parent case is from an industrial powder actuated tool load that has been in production for many years.
@@SmallCaliberArmsReview they! Have not produced any since 2022
Oh, wow! I hadn't heard that.
@@SmallCaliberArmsReview only old stock available only if you see it buy it! Ask your gun shop for the truth especially the 20 grain!
@@RodDalrymple-o1b I purchased 2000 rounds from Sheeles online at 42 cent per round (pricy) about six months ago.
If only it wasn’t a Savage.
I like Savage! Most of them are made right here in the USA too.
@@SmallCaliberArmsReview Honstly, I’ve had issues with every savage I’ve owned. My friend has too. I had one of the first WSM’s that Savage made. The bolt one. It was horrible. Threw fliers constantly. My friend had a couple of Savages too that he had nothing but problems with. Switched to CZ. Too many internal plastic parts in the Savages.
My B-Mag has been great from day one. I did buy a CZ512 (.22 MAG), It wouldn't cycle at all. I sent it back and they fixed it. Excellent customer service.

You are full of 💩!! “Full of internal plastic parts” 😂, What are talking about. I’m betting you never owned one! If one was throwing fliers like you described it’s likely the shooter (you)! Any improvement made was simply stiffing up the thin plastic some came with, with a bedding job. Any other issues was with some of the earlier ammo. So you and your so called buddy analysis has been overruled by the Mass majority that know savage always has shot lights out and they still do!
A couple of things. Winchester can't make rimfire ammo that is accurate.
Secondly the 17WSM is dead, ammo is too hard to find. Just go with a 17 Hornet of some flavor. You can atleast reload for it.
If all you were after was to see if it would go bang, then success. I demand more from my bang sticks. Good luck on the project you just bought!
Thanks for watching!
Two new guns just released and this chuckle stick thinks it’s dead just because it was hard to find ammo during another round of ammo hoarding due to some 2020 shity president. Everything was hard to find and just fyi, besides the two new guns that were released, ammo is on the shelf at most places I’ve been two the last couple months, and that’s not even counting what’s available online! And the 17 hornet sucks!! Always has always will.
