    My Savage B Mag heavy barrel laminate stocked 17wsm.. likes the 25 gr Winchester ammo the best at 100 yds…usually grouping at 3/4 to 1 inch…the 20gr ammo..all seems to group just over an inch..in my rifle..The rifle has really settled in after a couple of hundred rounds down the barrel…..super great rifle for Crows and it’s hell on the Pine tree Red Squirrels..especially the 20 gr ammo… it shreds them at 75..100 yds..

    I have to agree on on the fouling on 17 cal rimfire. I have shot about 9-10 thousand rounds thru my cz 452 17 hmr. Fouling is a non issue. I have a Bmag with a Boyd stock same as yours. Good accuracy horse bleep bolt. I have found Hornady to be the best in both the hmr and wsm. The wsm ammo is inconsistent. Get a sticky bolt ocationaly.

    My bmag plastic stock shoots well. I glass bedded it thanks to your youtube how-to. I found hornady ammo to fail about 1 in 8 or 10. Quit using it and almost never get a failure now. Been clobbering the gophers this year. 100 yd shots are total gimmes.

    I have occasionally had misfires exactly like that you had there at the first. And I have had four different guns shooting the rimfire 17 cartridges. Cd you have a very accurate and good looking gun there.

    Thanks for this video on the 17 wsm. I have contemplating acquiring one, this put me in the hunt for one.. this will fill short range.. I shot a 17 rem alot with 30 gr Bergers. Those do foul a barrel pretty quick. It really test your ability to judge wind out there at 400 yards. I remember on shot in heavy wind at 404 yds. I rarely if ever crank on my scope. Just watched impact on grid of scope and move accordingly and next shot dead hit. Sold that one and am stuck on the 204 Ruger performance with 39 gr blitz kings, hard to beat.

    Nice looking rifle. That group you shot with the 17grn Hornady was the best group I have ever seen come out of a 17WSM. Those things just don't shoot how a varmint caliber should, cool round, great idea, love the extra punch but just wish they could get it figured out a little better. I almost got one a couple years ago to go with my 17hmr but I decided on the 17 Hornet instead, I hate being at the mercy at whatever is in stock at the store. But if that thing shoots that ammo at 9/16th then you have a winner rimfire for sure.

    I'll tell you what, I own several rimfire handguns and long guns, have two 22 WMR one is a Browning A bolt and the other a Ruger American rimfire, both shoot lights out accurate, didn't have to do a ting to either rifle. Own several center rifles as well, 204 Ruger in a Remington 700 VLS action, did a trigger job, floated the barrel and worked up a load and gun is accurate as hell. Now I bought this Savage B Mag and it's a different story all together, no matter what I do gun won't shoot worth a dam ! Had to work on bolt to get cases to eject but also checked and floated barrel in laminated stock and all is good, still won't shoot, 2" plus at 100 yards is totally unacceptable. Both my .22 mags shoot just over a 1/2" at 100 group after group all day long without having to clean the barrel ever 20 shots either. The B Mag is a low quality rifle in comparison to the Ruger American, I tried every type of ammo available and still no luck. I'll prob end up getting rid of the POS B mag.I'll try to keep shooting and cleaning the bore and see what happens, I really wanted to like this rifle but not so far.

    I have one of the original B-Mags with the pencil barrel and original stock. Despite buying a case of 17WSM ammo as soon as I could find it, I was still so disappointed after it made a round trip back to Savage for issues that it's been parked in the back of a safe ever since - 6, 7 years? Even the new mags they threw in the box were still crap. (I have to use a little screw driver for enough leverage to load them at round 2 and the 5th or 6th round(?) And Savage was so busy rebarreling those pencil barreled rigs that the new barrels were back ordered; I couldn't even get a new barrel while it was there. At this point, I can't decide how to go forward. Some folks that went ahead and jumped the hoops to make it shoot - new heavy barrel, bedded in a Boyds - are happy with the result. Others have said the effort was just throwing good money after bad and wish they hadn't bothered. I'm not surprised at the range of extremes from love them to hate them still showing up in comments. To be honest, my old Savage HMR will shoot on par with your best group in this video, and that was right out of the box at a price point not much beyond what I paid for the B-Mag when they first came out. I guess my expectations were way too high. What to do... what to do... scrap it or go for it? 🤷‍♂️ Either way, I appreciate your illustrating that it might still have potential, and I'd read elsewhere the Hornady ammo was the only decent choice for these, which I think you demonstrated as well.

    • @cavedweller1959
      @cavedweller1959  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It seems like Savage put the B-Mag and the A-17 on the market prematurely, let the buying public do the tail end of the R&D process. Let them find what we need to fix. Like you said 6-7 years ago. Pawn, sell, trade the one you have for what ever you can get for it, bite the bullet, so to speak. If then, you still want a 17 WSM, go new, heavy barrel, and any thing but the factory plastic stock, you want solid & ridged. Boyds are good and I'm sure there are others. Scrap it, or go for it? Much better question. In my case-Prairie Dogs-the HMR will realistically do 125 yards, the WSM, 225 yards. Yeah, I know, the key board professionals will take them both beyond 500. Cost? Pre Covid, $17.00 per 50. 34 cents a shot, I reload most of my small center fires for less. Currently, my area $20-$22 a box of 50. 40-44 cents a pull??? I've always said, the death of the 17 WSM will be the cost of ammo.

      @@cavedweller1959 I'm about 100% with your thoughts on this. I wonder if my homeowner's insurance would give me a couple of bucks if it was "accidentally" left up by the mailbox and stolen? 😉 (Although I think the joke would be on the thief!) Walking away would be easier if I didn't already have most of the original case of ammo I bought for it. I suppose the ammo could sell or trade along with it, and at present cost I probably wouldn't take a beating compared to what I paid for it back then. I don't need to have a zippier .17 other than my 17 HMR, I just thought a little more reach would be fun with a rimfire where I wasn't thinking about picking up brass and needing yet another set of dies. On the other hand, something like a nice .17 Hornet keeps coming back to mind. I don't *need* that either, but, ya know... we're shooters and we've always gotta have another something. I'll get off the fence eventually, but no rush. Even if I changed course for a .17 Hornet, I don't see any ammo or components for one. And while that .17 Hornet is a kick ass round, I'm not paying nearly a buck and a half per bang if factory rounds became available at today's prices. So coming back full circle, there's an argument to go for the new and improved heavy barreled WSM bedded in a real stock. I don't think it's worth rolling the dice on the one I have. First, a new barrel, then bedded in a Boyds, but for all I know the bolt face wouldn't close square to the chamber or there'd be something else impossible to sort out. That first run batch they turned out was a mess six ways from Sunday, and the early ammo was questionable. BTW, I found your video about WSM ammo concerns and laughed about those who wanted to argue. What the hell? They need a minute of chat with an F-Class shooter to see what they think about variables falling all over the map. I think they could learn something from guys who fire form their brass, turn the necks within ten thousandths, meter powder to the half grain and start over when the neck tension isn't dead on when seating with a dial indicator. Some of those guys are so OCD they'll half lose their minds if their extreme spread is outside of 40 fps. Gotta laugh if I imagine those guys going through a case of 17 WSM with their scales and mics to batch up like rounds. Can you imagine the cussing? 😆

    I have a lot of Federal ammo and it is notorious for misfires. Sometimes it will fire on the second try but I have had some rounds with no powder or priming compound in them. My rifle leaves a heavy dent in the rim, too. The ammo quality control leaves a good bit to be desired; usually a dud or 2 per box. Totally unacceptable. I really like the performance when it does fire, though.

  • @waddell7354

    Give the 15 grain lead free Winchester a try, my b mag shoots that 1/2 moa. I just got back from a trip shooting squeekers (basically a tiny prairie dog) at 3300 fps it is almost disgusting what those bullets do to those little guys. Plus I was shooting out to 250 yards with it as long as the wind was not blowing.

    I have the same gun and I find the same thing. It usually takes about 60 rounds to start shooting on the money. Hornady is the best rounds my rifle seems to shoot. I’ve tried others but to no success.

  • @jimreed6653
    @jimreed6653 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    The failure to fire you had on the first round is common. I had a Ruger 17 wsm and it was junk. It had way too many misfires. Since Winchester makes all the WSM ammunition no matter who's names on the box, you can't count on any of it being any good. I had so many misfires I finally sold the Ruger and all the ammunition at a big loss and will never own a 17 wsm again. Your sticky bolt on the Savage is also a known issue.

Eyes went to shit a long time ago) When I put the Winchester's in it witch is all I could find during covid the groups are 3 inches at best.
