- It’s not often we taste a new flavour of Porsche 911. Usually the same models come around on largely excellent repeat: Carrera, Targa, Turbo, GT3, Sport Classic… there’s a 911 for just about any person, and any road. Except, what if you like mucking about on mud, sand, snow?
Welcome to something called the 911 Dakar: a toughed-up high-riding version of the 992 GTS. That means a 475bhp 3.0-litre twin-turbo flat six at the back, four wheel drive, and an eight speed PDK gearbox… all dangling 50mm higher off the ground than usual.
Only 2,500 of these zombie apocalypse-proof 911s will exist, so join Top Gear magazine’s Ollie Kew for an in-depth look at the Dakar’s tougher body, dune-ready suspension, extra driving modes, and crazy options list…

and it's not like the an electrified porsche lineup will be any less exciting, the taycan is probably the coolest ev out there. l can't wait to see what porsche will come up with next

Ugh, I absolutely love this thing. Something about the look of a lifted, off-road version of a small sports car just looks so damn cool to me. Not to mention you’ll never have to worry about weather conditions and bottoming out like you normally might with other regular sports cars, so there’s never any excuse to not to drive it all the time! Love it.
Small? Porsches are absolutely huge these days
911 became too big for my taste.

@@0nlyCF well yeah, everything is huge now haha cars are getting bigger and bigger each new model generation. The new M2 is technically bigger than a 911 tho, which is still a pretty damn small car by today’s standards

This shouldn't be a limited edition at all. This would sell like hot cakes for years to come. The limited edition could just be the one with the original colours of the Dakar and perhaps a few more special extras but leave a "normal" version for the rest of the people who wants one to go off-road just for fun.
I agree. Typically these brands do limited runs because it’ll resell for much more in the long run. Im with you on it should be a limited edition…probably cause I want one 😂
Disagree. This is a fun edition that collectors will enjoy, but it has a limited audience and will run its course quickly. It’s trendy right now, but most people understand that the 911 is a sportscar, and the Cayenne is far more off road capable, for less $

Ever heard of a fat bike? Look at what happened to those. They made off road 911’s in the 80’s. There’s a reason they didn’t continue with popularity. There are better tools for the job. This is just a fun tribute/throwback
I totally agree. I would buy one for sure and if it was not limited, it probably would cost around £120-130k. Perfect daily for me.

Porsche is a special company. The design, the taste for style and consequence. So unique in quality and service. The best road cars ever.

This thing will maybe get used for Alpine winter Skiing vacations and Maybe some arab dune messing around but other than that this will be a concrete jungle queen

Not sure, most Porsche Owners are not exactly the collector-in-showroom types. I believe they will see quite some action.

Doubt it, Porsche drivers are different. Haven't you seen the videos of even the base model Gt2 mudding?? I've even seen the older rally ones offroading. I'm sure it'll be put to the test, and Porsche knew that.

my friend... have you been to the wine counties of California? plenty of gravel dirt roads are traveled by exquisite cars... obviously not true off road, but still nothing will stop a rich person from their wine tasting.
You definitely will not see one. In Pennsylvania where we live (near Harrisburg) you can a year between seeing any 911 at all. The SUV's have taken over.
Nothing better than a 911 on a twisty mountain road..but to have this for the winter run to the Colorado slops would be amazing!

There EXISTS NO OTHER sports car as versatile as a 911. The same chassis can be used in so many different ways it’s mind boggling

This is the coolest vehicle Porsche has made in decades. I love it.
And the Fact that it is a Porsche means you can actually take this off-road without worrying about breaking it.
You'll easily break the front lip. It's not that high and has a long overhang. Ittl get smashed on no time. This is more of a gravel road vehicle then anything else
Love the anecdote that this was faster than a Cayenne or Macan while testing in Morocco. Lighter weight should be the priority for every car, regardless of its intended purpose!

Simply amazing. I was shocked when I saw the thumbnail then when they unveiled the tribute livery I was speechless.
We should be thanking the Cayenne and Macan for paying the bills and allowing all the different 911 variants to even exist. Their SUV line is what pays the bills, as VAG requires all their different car lines to support themselves.
I love the combination of the tires and the 911.

Shame it’s limited edition as I think it would sell tremendously. I regularly visit the Lake and peak District and it’s common for high end sports cars to be parked up at the bottom of trails etc if they had a car that fulfilled the sports thrill along with versatility of leaving the tarmac and not struggling to find somewhere to park that’s not a bumper scraper

Ive really enjoyed the fact that Porsche has just gone full 'give the people what they want (and even some things they didn't know they wanted)' in the last few years. The 911R, Speedster, GT4/RS, GT3 Touring... this Dakar plus heaps of others. I haven't always been a massive Porsche guy, but have really had my mind changed recently. Killer!

The Rothmans color scheme looks awesome! I'm sure it'll do fine on some sand and rally track, but please don't compare it to a Land Cruiser on an offroad track haha, it's a different sport.

This is a really interesting thing to happen right after Marc Philipp Gemballa released a 40 piece limited edition of a RUF tuned 911 called „Marsien“. It was basically the same source of inspiration: a „Dacar specked“ 911 made for all terrain use espacially for driving in the desert.
This has been rumored for about 3 years
