simply beautiful, to think she wrote it aged 18, i could live to 800 and never pen such a heartfelt narrative. God bless Dolly, truly a unique gift. xxx
I nominate Dolly Parton as America’s Poet Laureate. An American Treasure. There has never, ever been another woman on this planet like Dolly. She is truly unique. Lovely, exquisite, a gift to behold...such a dear, sweet soul and masterful songwriter, story teller and dream weaver. The utter definition of one of a kind.
Came to this site after watching Dolly on the Stephen Colbert show on Oct 20, 2020. I wanted to hear the song that she said was one of her favourites ... the song is beautiful and Dolly looks amazing in this video. She has changed but only for the better. What a wonderful woman!!
This song is a masterpiece. It tells a story as old as time. She wrote it more than 50 years ago and although since then she's written songs just as beautiful, none is greater than this one. The others brought her critical acclaim, awards, money, and they also have stood the test of time. But none hits you with greater impact. Down from Dover speaks for all the generations of girls who have been used, abandoned, cast out from their families, and made to feel that no one cares. This song proves that someone cared, and by writing this song she made all who hear the song care too. May this song be preserved and passed down like the old folk songs that inspired the girl named Dolly Parton. It has already been featured in The Rose and the Brier, a book of American folk songs, with an accompanying CD. I recommend it.
Sure, & at the end of the song, we figure out the man from Dover passed away which makes the song more "emotionally impactful" & beautiful cause she kept the baby, stood against everyone & kept trusting he'd come back... ❤
Brilliance dolly parton down from Dover live with an orchestra reminded me of Neil diamonds very high standard version of Joni Mitchell s free man in Paris song one of my fave Ann muirhead scotland
That song always makes me sob along with a few other songs Dolly has written and sung that have brought tears to my eyes ! She is the ultimate singer songwriter ! Long live Dolly ❤️❤️❤️❤️
@@MrWayneWhite Was thinking that, too, Wayne. So exhilarating to watch another human being fully realizing and expressing her talent. Love the storytelling aspect of country music. I forgot it was Dolly singing and heard the voice of a brave, lonely, desperate young woman trying to cope with the reality of having a baby on her own. Moved me deeply.
@@lnl3237 I remember she said the radio stations would never play this song but it was one of her most requested songs. I remember my aunt had this on 8 track tape.
@@whodoer9999 Your aunt had good taste! The morals of the time were quite different back then. Ironic, too, because the sadness and pain of facing an unexpected pregnancy alone might have given a young woman pause.
@@lnl3237 I can remember when I was 8 to 10 years old and seeing her on the Porter Wagner show. I'd be messing around with the rabbit ears with foil on it. Then I laid on my tummy and watch her. I think she'll always have a very special place in my heart. She could teach today's artist many things about the business and more importantly she such a real down to earth and loving human being
She has been truly blessed with her many talents, beauty, ability to love people and to have them love her. I saw her in concert in the 1990's near Toronto, Canada.
This song absolutely breaks my heart. She wrote another song that could be about this same situation and the title of it is Mountain Angel. I heard Dolly say that any "story" song she had written is something that either she or someone very close to her had lived through. I wonder who lived through the story in this song. Donna Fargo also had a song very similar to this and the name of it is Manhattan Kansas.
what a song writer, what a person!
Wow sung amazingly. The songwriting is just beyond anything. Nobody tells a story like dolly. Long may she reign
I second this motion strongly. LOVE YOU DOLLY!! This song breaks my heart.
My gosh. Life changing beautiful.
She has the sweetest voice, just like an angel.

No-one could..not Bob Dylan not Kristofferson..hell even Hazlewood and Sinatra covered it!
I nominate Dolly Parton as America’s Poet Laureate.

This is one of the best written and most beautifully recorded songs ever.

Correction: just checked the lyrics again & figured out I got it wrong for years along lol it's the baby that died 😢
Certainly one of America's greatest singer/songwriters...
Saddest song ever recorded. Very powerful art.
She is the queen of them "Me and Little Andy", "Where Beauty Lives in Memory" and "Mountain Angel" just to name a few.

I love Dolly!!!
This is the first time I've heard this song, and all I can say is.... Someone cut the onions again!
Right??? It makes me cry everytime. Heartbreakingly true story for many women. TOO many.
I heard this while driving & I cried the whole time. Dolly is a genius.
My all-time favorite Dolly Parton song. But frankly, I love them all.
This song is forever printed in my memory ..
Mine too.
Epic performance of a very sad song .
This one and Me And Little Andy ALWAYS makes me sob!
Just watching her facial expressions throughout this performance you can see this is deeply personal. These lyrics are true to her.
That song always makes me sob along with a few other songs Dolly has written and sung that have brought tears to my eyes ! She is the ultimate singer songwriter !

Are you kidding me...eighteen? Dolly is an absolute genius.
She was meant to do this, not just for the fame, fortune and money but to change lives and evoke emotions

great song
I grew up south of Dover, Delaware in Milton, Delaware.
Just heard about this song from a recent book review in the Wall Street Journal.
