This song is not often recommended to reactors as it's a heart breaker... The Bridge is another masterpiece. Dolly can make you laugh, cry and everything in between ❤
The difference between Elvis and Dolly is that he wasn't a writer. He sang songs written by other people. He loved her song, I Will Always Love You, and wanted to record it. She agreed, but the day before the session, his manager, Col Parker called and told her Elvis doesn't record anything unless we get the publishing rights to the song. She told him no way, so Elvis never recorded it. She said she cried all night. It was Elvis for goodness sake! Then when Whitney recorded it, she said she cried all the way to the bank! Also, Prescilla told her that Elvis sang the song to her the day their divorce was final. He really loved the song.
Thank you for playing another song by " The Queen of Country Music" who has written more than 3:000 songs. They just don't give a whole bunch of Grammys Awards and Oscars and Life Achievement Awards to anybody. And Dolly not only can sing and write but Dolly can also play at least five 11:39 or six musical instruments very, very well. And Dolly has a net worth of over 650 million dollars huh? But anyay could you, would you please play another song by Dolly a few years back called, 'Me and Little Andy " and also what you think of it? It means so much to me. Thank you Sir. Have a Blessed Day. Adios.
As a songwriter, she needed to rhyme with clover, so the place where he went was Dover. Dolly said she looked out the window of Porter Wagoner's tour bus and saw the shadow of a cloud racing over a field of clover. She began writing her song. And a masterpiece was born.
That is how it was for many young women when I was a young girl. When the men walked away, the women were left shouldering all the responsibility and scorn. I knew one girl who was beaten so badly by her father that she ended up losing the baby. I really enjoyed your reaction. Keep checking out female country music songs and you will find a lot of heart and strength in their messages. Warning, they will evoke some powerful emotions. Would love to see you react to the following videos: Ashley McBryde's "Martha Divine" and "Brenda Put Your Bra On". Martina McBride 's "Concrete Angle" and "Independence Day". Reba McEntire's "Fancy". Carrie Underwood's "Before He Cheats".
Dolly's writing is second to none and her story telling abilities are reflected in her beautiful songs. When she wrote this, her record label didn't like the subject matter and thought it was too 'controversial'💔Dolly insisted on 'Down From Dover' be included on her album - she knew how many young girls/women had been through this scenario She got her way & that was that! Dolly is a truly inspirational gift to this world💝Please react to 'Little Sparrow' - it's from later in her career but it's beautifuly written 💕(I'll leave a link to it under this comment cos YT deletes comments with links for some weird reason!)
I agree with you about Dolly being great, on a level with Elvis. She can bring listeners to tears while chills run down their spines. That is a rare gift.
She was NOT hiding this from him because he knew. He promised he'd be back by the time her dress was revealing. She was hiding it from the people that her dad said would prevent him from ever being able to show his face if they learned of it. I think it was a big mistake on the part of her record company to leave out the verse about her taking the job out on the farm taking care of an old lady because that is a huge part of the story. They left it out of the song because back then Nashville followed a pretty strict FORMULA about their songs and you had a certain number of verses and your songs were not to exceed a certain number of minutes, so they pulled this verse. BIG MISTAKE. I have found ONE version of this song that includes that missing verse. It is on the album where on the cover she is sitting sidewise in a chair with one arm hooked over the back of the chair and it is in black and white. By far that is my favorite version of this song. But even without that verse which specifically mentions a baby, she says, "time is running out and a TINY FACE will show itself" and when a single girl is hoping that her boyfriend will "hurry back from Dover" and is talking about how a dress is revealing, these things make it very clear that she is talking about an unexpected pregnancy and the imminent birth of a baby. Her mother told her he would not keep his word and come back and turns out Mom was right.
I've said that myself. She conveys all the emotions of the song and makes us feel the pain of the girl who is betrayed by her lover. And also by her parents who toss her from their home. The baby dies and we know her false hearted lover is done with her. Sad is not a strong enough word for the anguish of the situation.
I loved your reaction!🥹 I love her song! I’ve never heard that song. She’s had so many songs that have never been in the radio, but are amazing, just as this one is. She writes songs for so many life situations.
The story is as old as time and worldwide. Dolly spoke for all those women and girls by telling their story. I'm sure Dolly knew or heard of someone who had this experience. A masterpiece by one of the greatest songwriters. Those women and girls deserve all the tears brought by their story. I'm sure Dolly was touched by their pain .
Dolly wrote and recorded at least 6 of the top 10 saddest songs in history. If you like to cry, listen to Gypsy, Joe, and Me, Blue Ridge Mountain Boy, Me and Little Andy. She also has done many of the most uplifting and joyful songs ever. ❤❤❤
Her delivery of the song makes it sound like a true experience. When she sings the part about her mother telling her she is a fool, you hear hurt and anger in her voice. But it was never Dolly's experience. Some girl had this happen to her and Dolly was moved by it to write the song. Dolly Parton has made these tragic events into a masterpiece of a ballad. Rolling Stone Australia's Country Music magazine listed Dolly's 50 greatest songs. Down from Dover was on the list number 15.
Oh darling.... you're singing to the choir with all of us.... we've been listening to Dolly for 40 years! Yes! We hear the same thing you hear.... LOL.
Dolly has updated this song, adding the verse you were reading. There is an amazing, audio video with the added verse and the music is even more haunting.
Unlike most of Dolly's music, this song isn't autobiographical. Dolly wrote this song about some of her classmates in high school. She tried to record this track early on in her tenure with Porter Wagoner, but her label hated it because of the subject matter. That's probably why she edited the original lyrics. Dolly edited the original lyrics of " Coat of Many Colors" before she recorded it. It was a few years (1971) until her record label finally let her record it. They didn't release it as a single, nor did they promote it. That's probably why you found so few videos of this track. It's a hidden gem.
I've been a Dolly fan for nearly 50 yrs. Like you I see her as being a good soul. Please react to her new song ... Dolly parton with Zach Williams. Looking for you. I just think you'll be blessed by her as
Dolly is a great singer/songwriter. Has many songs that will break your heart. Try listening to a song that got banned from some country radio stations, "The Bargain Store." It Was ban because she mentioned her body parts. I think it's a beautifully written song. My, how times have changed. It still became a hit. It was the same for Loretta Lynn. She was ban by Country radio 14 times. So many great song in Country Music. Here's a few. "I wish l was a teddy bear" Barbara Fairchild "Blood red & goin' down" Tanya Tucker "You were always there" Donna Fargo "Big four poster bed" Brenda Lee "Faded Love" Patsy Cline "If that's what friends are for" Barbara Mandrell I'm gonna write a song" Lynn Anderson "I don't wanna play house" Tammy Wynette
The "extra lyrics" had to be left out because the song would have been too long for radio. MOST radio would not play it because in those days you couldn't discuss such issues openly, it was too controversial. LISTEN CLOSELY to the words and follow along.
Radio stations just flat out REFUSED to play this song on the radio. They preferred to stick their heads in the sand and pretend that country music should just be ‘family friendly’. No doubt a ‘leftover’ attitude from the “Leave it to Beaver” and “Mayberry” tv picture of American families.
Her story telling goes straight to the heart. These things happen and Dolly gives a voice to the pain some people have been through.
This song is not often recommended to reactors as it's a heart breaker...
The Bridge is another masterpiece. Dolly can make you laugh, cry and everything in between ❤
This song was banned by radio stations back in the day. The only way to hear it on her albums. That's why this song is less well known.

Dolly acts the hell out of a song. She has that natural ability, with her voice to convey emotion. No one does it like Dolly. I love Dolly 🦋

Dolly can tell a story of someone elses pain so well you swear it was her own. Few can do that.
That is how it was for many young women when I was a young girl. When the men walked away, the women were left shouldering all the responsibility and scorn. I knew one girl who was beaten so badly by her father that she ended up losing the baby.

She's preg. (but Dolly never has been).. No, the man said he'd be back before she was showing. She puts all the pain of THAT girl in the words.
she also wrote this song when she was only 16 years old
16 wow

Dolly loves to rip your heart out.
Tool this one got me
When Dolly recorded it, it was deemed too long and they cut a verse. When she rereleased it in 2002, she restored the missing verse.
Good Into Tony thank you
Dolly partons songwriting can tear your heart outt a chest stormp on it into a million pieces and put back together and put it back into your chest

Listen to Dolly Parton Where Beauty Lives in Memory. She wrote it too. Great Song.
Lyrics are so powerful. Love love Dolly. Greetings from South Africa
Oh darling.... you're singing to the choir with all of us.... we've been listening to Dolly for 40 years! Yes! We hear the same thing you hear.... LOL.
I know i'm so late T
THANK YOU
It pulls you into the story.
The missing verse was recorded when she did the song with Altan in the late 90s or early 2000s.
Get about 500 tissues and try Dolly’s “Me and Little Andy”
Dolly has updated this song, adding the verse you were reading. There is an amazing, audio video with the added verse and the music is even more haunting.
I love all of Dolly Parton music 🎵🎶❤
That one verse was edited from the final version of the song.
It was never banned by radio because it was never released to radio...it was an album cut
Her record company was not going to release it as a single.
The Bridge. It'll get you, too. Dolly is a brilliant storyteller.
I love this Woman
Heartstrings on Netflix .8 short movies based on her songs..Down From Dover is one of them ..a must watch

It’s yearning and sadness wrapped up in music.
I just mentioned this on another video and here it is ❤
Yay! Thank you!
@@CVTECK1 Little Sparrow is the title track and first track off this album and it is amazing
You should listen to Mountain Angel, another one of Dolly's masterpiece stories that could almost be the continuation of the girl's story in this song
Great reaction. ❤❤❤❤❤

No, the only body part mentioned by Dolly was her broken heart. In the minds of radio programmers THEY visualized things not mentioned in her song.
The Carroll County Accident
Dover is the capitol city of Delaware. He got her pregnant and took off, promising to come back before the baby came. He didn't, of course.
Porter Wagoner was her boss and he cut those lyrics before he recorded Dolly.
She's pregnant in the story. The man that got her pregnant left for Dover, Delaware and never returned.
Dover is a city in England/United Kingdom
It's also a city in the state of Delaware in the United States.
You need to react to Dolly’s ‘The Bridge’. Not a live version but the studio version. It is unlike any song you will ever hear.
Bun in the oven baby and he knew and didn’t come back 😱😱
There are 2 versions
Try to listen to Don’t make me come down there.. the lyrics are so true to this day and age🥰
Been there done that 😢
Would you please look at the Eagles too, I like Tequila Sunrise ?
You didn't let the very end of the song play.
DOVER, DELAWARE???
you need to hear letter to the heaven, to daddy, bargain store, too late, seeker ....
at 1:33 you paused and asked...what secret? Why ask a question that will obviously be answered in the next 60 seconds? I thought that was funny.
He sounds a bit dense.
Real talk man. Dolly did a rockstar Album ( covers of many great classics ) She covers a song u have to hear. NO ONE can cover Prince >> Purple Rain
ohh yes i will look into it
