You oughta go north somebody told us 'Cause the air is filled with gold dust And fortune falls like snow flakes in your hands Now I don't recall you said it But we'd lived so long on credit And so we headed out to find our promised land Just poor Appalachian farm folk With nothing more than high hopes We hitched our station wagon to a star But our dreams all fell in on us 'Cause there was no land of promise And it's a stuggle keepin' sight of who you are Oh and these northern nights are dreary And my southern heart is weary I wonder how the old folks are back home But I'll keep leanin' on sweet Jesus I know He'll love and guide and lead us Appalachian memories keep me strong Ya know I've been thinkin' a whole lot lately About what's been and what awaits me It takes all I've got to give what life demands You go insane if you give in to it Life's a mill and I've been through it I'm just thankful I'm creative with my hands Oh and these northern nights are dreary And my southern eyes are teary Don't I wonder how the old folks are back home But I'll keep leanin' on my Jesus I know he'll love and guide and lead us Appalachian memories keep me strong I'll keep lookin' to the Father Keep our heads above the water Appalachian memories keep me strong.
Can't listen to her such songs without eyes watering. Can relate as a Southerner. Sadly many greedy northern retirees come south, and all they do is bicker about our beautiful southern regions, because they're northerns of a fast pace which don't know how to move with grace while accomplishing the same tasks. They can't tap in and acclimate to a different culture. Some do assimilate with southerners and are awesome to br around. Some just can't so they segregate themselves in their own clicks and try to change the south to be like the overbearing fast lane of the northern big cities they fled.
I remember watching this in the 80’s I recorded it on a VH tape and played it again and again. I love her so much.
No matter where you end up in life, never forget where you came from. I just love Dolly. Such another one of her beautiful heart touching songs.
This is my favourite Dolly Parton song. I was at this concert.
Same here, my favorite
Memorable song.
Genius songwriting, let alone performance.
Beautiful ❤
Her voice. Good lord. Do you know how hard that song is to sing? The runs, the range, the dynamics. Incredible. ❤️
What a work of art!
It's one of those songs that you'll want to listen to again and over again.
I love dolly after listening to her all I want to do is write songs
2021 listen to this song 😍..
Born 1993 and I love old music..my generation don't have meaning
Our family moved to Ohio in 1952..but thankfully returned to these Smoky Mountains in 1961...our beautiful Dolly...
You oughta go north somebody told us
'Cause the air is filled with gold dust
And fortune falls like snow flakes in your hands
Now I don't recall you said it
But we'd lived so long on credit
And so we headed out to find our promised land
Just poor Appalachian farm folk
With nothing more than high hopes
We hitched our station wagon to a star
But our dreams all fell in on us
'Cause there was no land of promise
And it's a stuggle keepin' sight of who you are
Oh and these northern nights are dreary
And my southern heart is weary
I wonder how the old folks are back home
But I'll keep leanin' on sweet Jesus
I know He'll love and guide and lead us
Appalachian memories keep me strong
Ya know I've been thinkin' a whole lot lately
About what's been and what awaits me
It takes all I've got to give what life demands
You go insane if you give in to it
Life's a mill and I've been through it
I'm just thankful I'm creative with my hands
Oh and these northern nights are dreary
And my southern eyes are teary
Don't I wonder how the old folks are back home
But I'll keep leanin' on my Jesus
I know he'll love and guide and lead us
Appalachian memories keep me strong
I'll keep lookin' to the Father
Keep our heads above the water
Appalachian memories keep me strong.

Myself as someone who has had to leave my homeland, the first time I heard this song, it was like choping 50 onions. 😢😢❤❤
Why the name change to Smokey Mountain memories?
Smokies are part of the Appalachian trail/mountains.
I like it sang this way much better than Smokey. Maybe because this was the first way I heard it and got used to it.
Anastasia Milkshake personally I love both versions dolly has such amazing vocals it's so beautiful
