Questa parte dell'improvvisazione in American Garage è un "vamp" ovvero un giro ripetitivo dove predomina l'accordo di D. Mentre sull'accordo viene suonata principalmente la pentatonica blues, il lick riportato nel video è un modo per suonare fuori, quindi non è giustificato da una scala in particolare o dai chord-tones, ma piuttosto da un voler "evadere" la scala e l'accordo creando tensione. Pratica che Metheny adotta spesso attraverso i suoi cromatismi.
