So let me get this straight. You want to fly on a magic carpet, to see the king of the potato people and plead with him for your freedom...and you're telling me you're completely sane?
Back in the 90s, there was a thing called Red Dwarf Magazine, and one of they're articles was letters page hosted by Mr Flibble. No matter how much Rimmer grows (minutely) there's always a way to make him reset back to factory settings Smeg-Head mode again. All Hail the Potato King! (I figure he looks like Sean Austin)
Chris Barrie as Rimmer (when a servant of the potato king) is doing an impression of a very talented actor named Donald Pleasance. He made movies in Britain and the USA, was often on TV as well, and is probably most famous for playing Doctor Loomis in 'Halloween' 1978. He had a way of being ordinary and convincing, while playing the most extraordinary characters. Worth looking up.
I would argue that his Blofeld is more well known - most of the interpretations of the archetype (including the Austin Powers' movies) are based on his performance.
Mr.Flibble was apparently a full on diva on set. Very difficult to work with. The cast and crew threatened to walk out on many occasions but knew they had to put up with him cos MrFlibble was such a big star in the UK.
Don't you all know since his guest appearance on red dwarf. It made him a multi millionaire he even bought a luxury apartment in Dubai, before it was considered cool to go there.
You’ll be thinking about this episode for the rest of your lives, if you’re anything like me! I still remember seeing it as a kid and not being able to go to sleep that night because I kept remembering bits and bursting out laughing! And I have a licensed Mr Flibble signed by Chris Barrie 😊
Just to say, I had a really gritty day yesterday. When I managed to settle down a bit, I put on the TV and saw Stargate : Universe was on. I was about to watch it when I thought maybe it wasn't the right thing to sit through after a day like that, so I put this on instead... Cheered me up, no end... Thanks.
I still have a Mr Flibble with gingham hair buns (the maker obviously mistook them from a static image with Rimmer's hair behind the puppet - long before official mech!) - always loved it and my boys like it too. Even saw a Mr Flibble on a BBC quiz show the other week as a contestant brought it in as a mascot.
The gingham dress and Mr Flibble glove puppet a major cosplay for Dwarfers. I have yet to do it, more a Lister leather jacket and a foil container for my curry
Rimmer's gingham dress remains a firm favourite cosplay among Red Dwarf fans to this day! 😁 Also, the Mr Flibble puppet was so adored by the production crew, a rota was put in place so everyone was allowed to take him home and keep him for a couple of days. ❤🐧
Rimmer's... insane acting would be chilling if it weren't so HILARIOUS ! And not just his, but Mr. Flibble too ! The ultimate of this is @ 12:40, "We can't possibly do THAT ! ... Who'd clean up the mess ?..." with that murderous glare on Flibble's face... I MEAN HOW DO THEY DO THAT ?... MAKE A CHEAP HAND PUPPET LOOK THAT MENACING ! ? ! HILARIOUS !
This is an all time great episode to me! I just love how it's both clever and very silly at the same time (all the potato king stuff is just so funny!) I also have one of the Mr Flibble puppets myself, it's so cute!
Rimmer is going to be alright. The luck virus must have worn off. Mr Flibble is one of the highlights of Season 5. Once watched, never forgotten. You will be saying Mr Flibble in everyday life, now.
As a Dwarfer from day 1, I think a lot of people go through all the series and end up going back to the first series to watch them all again and trying to decide which is best. My experience differs from series to series but series 5 was excellent.
My absolute favourite episode of Red Dwarf, going from the intensely creepy horror-flavoured opening act to the now very relatable comedy of the Quarantine section to the absolutely iconic finale with Rimmer in a gingham dress, the King of the Potato People, and Mr Flibble (who is very cross). It's such a well-written episode that straddles the line perfectly between horror and comedy, and all four of the leads play the story perfectly; Chris Barrie gets a lot of praise here (and deservedly so), but I think Craig Charles deserves a lot of credit here too, his facial expression when he realises he's walked into Rimmer's trap in the WOO scene is just priceless
I had that T-Shirt aswell - the one with Lister holding a bazookoid, I wore it to death, it eventually got eaten by moths - I hope it gave them indigestion.
According to behind the scenes commentary, there's always at least one person at every Dwarf convention in a red gingham dress and army boots. Usually with Mr. Flibble on the hand.
Quarantine is one of my top three episodes of Red Dwarf. I don't usually speak for other people but I doubt I'm alone among Red Dwarf fans saying that.
Yaaaaayyy! The Gallifrey Gals have finally met the most important character in _Red Dwarf:_ Mr. Flibble. If it had taken any longer, he would have been _very _*_cross…_*
The bit with the warning signs is another classic visual gag, with perfect timing on the editing for reactions & banter / the follow up gag with the Psi- scan - very similar to the adventure game in Terrorform. Micky Mouse, we ain't even Betty Boo.
Boy has this one taken on a new context in the last 3 or 4 years. Notice how Cat, while still the "dumb" one, is increasingly making astute psychological observations and "street smarts", like here where he immediately recognizes the peril of imminent cabin fever. Again, another one of the Hall Of Fame episodes. Clever sci-fi with the "positive viruses", great character comedy (as usual centering on Rimmer's weirdness), and even a Deus Ex Machina that's so funny it doesn't even feel cheap like they so often can. [And another love letter to Aliens with the Chest Burster warning sign]. "Mr. Flibble's Very Cross" and "Twinkle Twinkle Little Eye, Now It's Time For You To Die" rank among the all time beloved lines. And stick a pin in the "Space Corps Directives" because this is by no means the last you'll hear of them :)
Not suggesting you both watch this as a reaction as part of your channel but more for your own entertainment: a few years back Robert Llewellyn (Kryten) made an online series called Carpool (not to be confused with Carpool Karaoke) ostensibly about electric/hybrid vehicles but his chats with his in-car guests are often funny and informative. The link below is to the edition with guest Chris Barrie (Rimmer) - enjoyable for their relaxed conversation and both’s impersonations (particularly Barrie’s) of the other main cast members. 🙂 Robert also recorded Carpools with Craig Charles (Lister), Danny John-Jules (Cat), Hattie Hayridge (Holly 2) and… Sir Patrick Stewart (Capt Picard)! th-cam.com/video/Vb2922MPYCc/w-d-xo.htmlfeature=shared
Chris Barrie’s impressions are incredible. It’s worth your time listening to the Red Dwarf audio books narrated by him. He does the voices of the whole cast brilliantly.
Space Corp Directives and the "Boys of the Dwarf" become recurring jokes! When Rimmer 1st appears in that outfit, I always think of an old Wendy's logo that was very similar! That outfit is wild enough, but then . . . Mr. Flibble!! My favorite times are when the cast get to be other people. One of of the BEST is still to come!
A few years ago I actually commissioned an artist friend of mine to make a Mr Flibbles puppet for a birthday gift to another friend of mine, a HUGE Red Dwarf fan. She absolutely loved it, and still has it now years later.
One of my all time favourite episodes of Red Dwarf. It's interesting that the concept of the show itself was based on the idea of two people who don't get on being stuck with each other, and this episode takes that to the extreme by having three of our characters forced into a single room together. As for Rimmer, I think he's genuinely one of the most complex and interesting characters in all of science fiction. You can never fully make up your mind about him because yeah, he's a smeghead, but then you see *why* he's a smeghead, and how much better a person he could be if he only believed in himself. He's difficult to love, but impossible to hate.
"That'll teach you all to be bread baskets." Has been a quote of mine for ages ages. Quarantine was one of those episodes I could always catch before I finally was able to see the full series.
I DO feel like Rimmer had a good point though. They weren't treating him as a person due to a particularly rigid application of "Space Corps Directives," so he returned the favor. Doesn't feel good, I expect.
You can see when Rimmer contracts the virus: While he's talking to Dr. Landstrom over the communicator, she offers a riddle: _"What's dead, and dead, and dead all over?"_ Rimmer replies: _"GIve in, Dr. Fruit Loop. Do tell me."_ Landstrom then says: _"Yoouuuuuuuuu!"_ The console explodes and there is a quick flash of lightning traveling from the console to Rimmer.
Back when I was in the Army, we had this hulking, huuuge brute of a vehicle mechanic in the squadron. He was the silent type, looked like a shaved ape and could drink an entire rugby team under the table. He had a "Mister Flibble" tattoo on the back of his neck. Go figure...
OMG... one of my favorite Red Dwarfs "Quarantine"... the Boyz from the Dwarf's reactions at the start and end of quarantine are so spontaneous and genuine... it just doesn't seem scripted... it seems natural ! And Rimmer... his insane acting would be chilling if it weren't so HILARIOUS ! ? ! HILARIOUS !
This is one of my all-time favorite Red Dwarf episodes! It's so much fun on all levels, from the jokes to crazy Langstrom, crazy Rimmer, and definitely Mr. Flibble! So hilarious.
I love how you can see the virus being transmitted when Rimmer and Lanstrom are talking the radio breaks there's a spark that goes from the radio into Rimmer's head. neat little detail I didn't notice for a while.
The cult classic Mr Flibbles episode! Nice reaction. Rimmer’s outfit with Mr Flibbles was so popular at the Dimension Jumps and at Halloween. Not surprised there is a still merch available even now.
Mr. Flibble is my favourite guest actor of the entire show. The concept of things like luck and sexual magnetism being "positive viruses" is endlessly funny to me, and yet it just sort of works. Like, it makes sense, you know?
"Because the king of the potato people won't let me" was a staple excuse for any random occurrence in my household growing up.
So let me get this straight. You want to fly on a magic carpet, to see the king of the potato people and plead with him for your freedom...and you're telling me you're completely sane?

@@barneysbestbuddy5472 Your right, it was.
The next episode (no spoilers, naturally) is my favourite xD

I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Flibble at a charity do once. He was surprisingly down-to-earth, and *very* funny.
I made the mistake of cutting in front of Mr Flibble in a supermarket queue once. That Hex Vision sure does sting the butt cheeks!
So glad he got over his high profile drug problems, his comeback has been a delight.
@@MetalGearN30 he was in the closet for so many years, I’m not surprised he turned to drugs.
Don't you all know since his guest appearance on red dwarf. It made him a multi millionaire he even bought a luxury apartment in Dubai, before it was considered cool to go there.
The Potato King scene is one I rewatch regurlarly, might be the funniest of all time

If I remember right - they needed a puppet for the script and the prop guy literally just went to a charity shop and found Mr. Flibble sat there!
Good friend of Stooky Bill
That's pure... LUCK
The random *"EUUUUUGGGGGGH!!!"* Rimmer makes at 10:39 never fails to make me laugh.
It's such a brilliant moment. I always loved Lister's awkward little face palm in response. 😂
your hair is super cute Kat, don't worry! Very excited for this episode! A classic!'
I used to have an official Mr. Flibble t-shirt about 25 years ago.
The gingham dress and Mr Flibble glove puppet a major cosplay for Dwarfers. I have yet to do it, more a Lister leather jacket and a foil container for my curry
Superb episode! 2d Technician Arnold Judas Rimmer Bsc, Ssc at his unhinged best! Plus the sublimely crazed Mister Flibble, fantastic😀👍

This was the first episode I ever saw as a kid, and I was hooked immediately.
Mr Flibble was waiting for this reaction. Mr Flibble really likes this one.

Such a fun episode & Rimmers alter ego is a favorite at reunions.
Ive met mr flibble before. He even signed my tshirt. He is really cool but dont make him cross, or run away from him.
Definitely one of my favourite episodes. Barrie absolutely killed it with the spine chilling insanity
This is the funniest episode, IMO. Also they played a group of friends getting on each other's nerves perfectly.

I expect to see Kat and Paula fully flibbled out in new gear for next week's episode.
Mr.Flibble the hand puppet what just a place holder for something else, but as they rehearsed they began to love it and kept it for the episode.

This is my favourite episode, ive watched it so many times and annoyed my sons with the quote im the king of the potato people😢
Ah yes, I was looking forward to your encounter with Mr. Flibble 😀
the net needs to see you upload a 10hr looped vid of you both eating sprout crumble....
The last three episodes in series 5 are just genius and the finale is a CLASSIC!
Mr. Flibble as himself
