There is always Ace Rimmer, somewhere deep, deep, deep, deep, very deep down inside, way deep, he could be better. I guess that's true of everyone, every hero has a scuzzball inside, and every smeghead is redeemable.
There is a great anecdote about the making of this episode and Robert Llewellyn's biography. They shot the trip across the swamp in the dead of night. Robert Llewellyn can't swim. The three of them are trying to paddle the boat towards the camera which is 100 yd away, barely visible by a red light. They have virtually no control over the the boat.. All of the butane bottles spewing flame into the air made the lake look like a Kuwaiti oil field. At one point Craig Charles decides he wants to light a cigarette by one of the flames. He leans over, almost to where the boat tips over, lights a cigarette, exhale the cloud of smoke, and says "Paddle on dudes". By now Robert Llewellyn and Danny John-Jules are helpless with laughter. How they got usable footage from this is a mystery of the ages.
Chris Barrie and Craig Charles started out legitimately not liking each other (and some early episodes really show it!), but round about this point (Season/Series 5) they start getting along. Rob Grant and Doug Naylor started out getting around really great but eventually had a very deep (and permanent to this point) falling out after Series/Season 6. Doug Naylor has continued writing the show as a solo effort since. They co-wrote the first two novels as "Grant Naylor" and have each written a competing third Red Dwarf novel. [File them alongside Lennon/McCartney and Morrissey/Marr under Popular British writing teams that will never work together again]
Series 5 slaps. And Rimmer is my fave because he is so complex 😅 You hate him, you love him, you feel sorry for him, and you wish he was better, and he's consistently one of the funniest characters on the show. But he also has a lot of trauma that makes him the way he is and the show really harps on the fact that if his life had just been a little different he would have had so much potential. He's tragic in a way.
Red Dwarf never lets him get better. There's a great moment at the end of a much later series where he's turned things around but, nope, next series he's back to where he was.
I love that they're starting to realise the characters are a lot more complex than they first seemed/were. Lister used to be just portrayed as a slob, but they're now bringing out the fact he's actually quite smart, loyal, brave etc... And the same with the others as well, they've always been more, but i feel by this point it's more easy to spot.
It's peak comedy because it organically grows out of the audience knowing more than the characters, Lister's fear of spiders had been pre-established, and it's surreal enough to hit the "it's horror for the characters but hilarious for the viewer" boundary.
A couple of lines I remember from this episode... "Sir, there's two problems with cutting me in two; it invalidates my service guarantee, and I can't trust you to open a can of sardines that have already been opened". "The leach has a face... It's Rimmer's mum?!?"
I'm pretty sure that all of the main cast are really good friends, having witnessed. Chris Barrie and Danny John-Jules together at a recent convention, I'm gonna say "It's true. THEY really DO care about each other" 😂😂
A little anecdote: While queuing for Chris's autograph, he needed to take a comfort break. He told those of us in the queue "I'll be back in ~15 minutes", to which Danny (located on the stall nextdoor) said "15?!? Wow, it usually takes me around 30 these days!" 😂😂😂 Oh, and upon getting my copy of Blade 2 signed: Just if anyone asks, tell them that Danny can DEFINITELY still do THAT pose! 😂😂😂
Chris and Craig famously didn’t get along well for awhile. They were just such opposite personalities. All involved have said it really helped the performance. But later on they got in a lot better - especially after series 8 - and they’ve been on much, much better terms since. I’ve seen Craig in interview suggesting that the fact they both got older and matured had a lot to do with it.
Anytime someone in our house says "It's cold outside" - either myself, my wife, or both of us, immediately break into Red Dwarf. I think there's a name for people like us...
There's a few "Holly Episodes" and some "Kryten Episodes", but there are a lot of "Rimmer Episodes" and "Rimmer Episodes" are well-represented in the all time favorite episodes lists. This "Rimmer Episode" is no exception. As you've noted before, Chris Barrie is a powerful stage presence amongst this cast, and Rimmer is such a fascinating character (whose self-loathing is an inexhaustible plot mine) and Boy Are You Gonna Love The Next One.
In one of the specials Craig Charles said he and Chris Barrie didn't get along at the beginning if the show due to different personalities but they all came yo like each other as time went on. I liked season 7 and 8. I just think everyone involved had other projects which led to changes that made the show feel different. Which is why people complain about them.
One of my favorite things about Red Dwarf is that the characters are more than their archetypes. I love that Lister, when he applies himself, can be a very creative and brilliant guy.
Not now a spoiler but in the Audio book of Red Dwarf (Infinity welcomes careful drivers(unabridged )) they find Kryton in the Nova space ship they salvage the ship to Red Dwarf and use it's Holodeck to make the second Rimmer. Interesting they had Kryton after the 2 Rimmer episode. If you have the time the audio book is available to listen to.
The "dumb adventure game" scene is one of my absolute favorites. If you rewatch it at any point, make sure you pay attention to Lister and the Cat's reflections. It really sells the scene all the more, but is easy to overlook on the first viewing.
A repeating pattern of Red Dwarf is to show you Rimmer's terrible life and upbringing, until you feel sorry for him - and then let him remind you that, sad upbringing or not, he's _still_ a total smeg-head who's impossible to live with.
Love Kats " Cat" fish earwear . Lister did rebuild Kryten between series 2&3 so it's not a surprise he managed it this time . He does care about Rimmer as they all do in their own way , rescuing him . A bit like standing up for the" Boys from the Dwarf". It was kind of sad and disappointing for Rimmer at the end when he realised their flattery and friendship had been mostly insincere - but they needed a funny ending .
I like to think that after we cut away to the credits, in universe, Lister follows that up with "Look man. I want all those things to be true. You just need to get out of your own way. The Psi moon proved that yeah. A little self-confidence, some genuine attempt to work through that swamp in your head? Look there's a reason we went to rescue you man. You have a chance to change, take it smeghead."
The animatronic of the Unspeakable one, didn't perform as well as the producers hoped. So they resorted to the obscure shots. There are even some where it intimidates Rimmer, by taping two electrically charged clamps together, that produce electrical sparks. Also, Craig Charles, who played Lister. Really got on the camera crews nerves, when he messed about, trying to use one of the marsh fires to light a cigarette while he held in his mouth.
Great to see you both falling in love with this show like we did from way back. Paula’s reaction has especially surprised me and appears to genuinely care about Rimmer which I have never seen before or even considered. .. You can really tell she tries to see the good in people.
This episode was a nightmare to shoot on location for lighting director John Pomphrey. One of his assistants fell in the river during shooting, and he followed trying to help him out. The crew next season had a life jacket for him on standby on his lighting truck.
Series 1 - 6 are the best, steadily improving along the way IMO. After series 6 you should watch the 'Smeg Ups' and 'Smeg Outs' (behind the scenes/ bloopers) they are hilarious 😂😂
You're right about Lister being talented. He's that quote from Spider-Man 2: "brilliant but lazy". He may not be ambitious but that doesn't mean he isn't smart. I also think he shows a lot of character development starting with these last couple of series; he and Rimmer are more like friends who argue and take shots at each other, whereas in series 1 and 2, they were more like enemies.
The opening to this episode have always been at the top of the list of best openings for the whole series. Everything was played perfectly, particularly given I'm old enough to remember playing text based adventure games. :D Episode like this are one of the reasons season 5 is thought of as the best in the series. On a personal level, you also have to admire the sort of minds that could conceive of such notions and bring them to the screen in such a convincing way. As bizarre as the concept of a psi-moon is, at no point is there any doubt that such a thing could exist. And it's not every sci-fi show that could get away with it: Star Trek couldn't do it because their characters are supposed to be so well adjusted. You need a crew of seriously messed up people to get away with such an idea.
Chris Barrie's Rimmer is always a treat, but I do wonder if the character had a modicum of respect and good-nature blossomed from childhood, it would have created a fully-functioning human being between the Neurotic Coward of 2nd Tech and the Superman Ace. I believe the self loathing beast was a prop from a low budget film. To really mess with you and the viewers; Listen to the Red Dwarf opening. At the trumpet section of the song, there is a vocoder singing RED DWARF...RED DWARF! I can't unhear it now.
Even when it hits a few rough spots in later seasons, there is still some really funny bits to find throughout. I like that they did take some chances with changing the vibe in some of them.
@@joehoy9242 This was the infamous incident of director Juliet May putting the camera at his stomach level, while Craig Charles kept insisting, "No, no, it's his POV!", and it turned out she didn't know what POV means.
They need each other. It’s like friendship kidnapped affection at the end of the universe. And I feel as the next few series go they more work off each other than push down on each other’s flaws. So more flawed friends not bad people.
There are a few lines from this episode that just really make me laugh. “It’s in my boxers. I think it’s making a nest.” always gets me. But the bit that really makes me laugh is when the bikini-clad women have left and the creature climbs out of the pit. Rimmer’s “…boy am I glad to see you” line I just find hilarious.
I enjoyed the impromptu duet at the start of this reaction. 😀 I have a really clear memory of watching this with a friend when it originally came out and both of us laughing our butts off during the whole "tarantula"/communicating via the keyboard scene 😂.
You are 100% right about them deep down really caring about Rimmer... even Cat! When Kryten say's " of course sir, you're part of the team" it is such a heart warming moment that always puts a smile on my face. The musketeers would say "All for one and one for all", but i've always preferred "Boys from the dwarf"
Remember, we know exactly what would happen with Lister if he really applied himself. He was a full on chief engineer Dave "Spanners" Lister in Ace's universe. And as for Rimmer, he may be a complete and total smegpot. But he's THEIR complete and total Smegpot. XD
It was common for tv stations in the UK, in the event of a technical fault, to have an announcer inform the audience of the fault and introduce some light jazz, hence Kryten's self repair screen.
It's after Series VI when things get alittle downhill from there but it does rise up again in few series after that. Series VI is actually one of my favourite series in "Red Dwarf". The Unspeakable One monster i believe was an unused prop for Doctor Who.
you guys REALLY need to add the Tomb Raider movies toyour watch list, just to see Chris Barrie as the butler, basically like Batmans Alfred, hes a great surprise
When I think of my peer group from high school, there was certainly a "Rimmer"-type person who everyone accepted in the group, but no one would want to spend time with 1-1... Of course - others in that same group may have viewed me the same way... It's not like I'm swimming in friends as a 40-something nerdy married male dad.
The thing about Red Dwarf is that it’s a Status Quo show - basically Seinfeld in Space. The characters don’t learn or grow - the first priority is being funny. If Rimmer ever properly learned or grew as a person, the show would be over. It’s very much a mixed blessing lol
There's an episode in season 7 that I'm really excited to see how you react to. I'm not a big cryer, but it's the only part of Red Dwarf that ever made me tear up. Having watched your Who reacts and seen Paula already get teary over Holoship, I'm sure youse will love it and be a state. Love the Dwarf series and the channel, btw :)
In case nobody's pointed it out yet, the cat's coat is the same one he wore in the Camille episode where he hand-slapped himself. The costume department recoloured it by hand, scribbling over all the white bits with yellow markers.
Hello Gals , in reply to your comment about the show inevitably "falling off" , going down hill , you could not be more wrong , this show just keeps getting better and better with every new serason and episode , my personal favourite if you put a gun to my head and forced me to choose , would be the first episode of season 7 ""Tikka to ride"" can't wait to see your reaction , that episode and the "changling" xenomorph , the alien that changes shape , boxer shorts, football etc ,,, that also is up there on the list of greatest of all time .
if youve got a cold, with a sore throat, try chewing raw garlic... swallow it slowly... also.. a good drink to have is red tea (no caffeine no need for sugar) and another good drink not just for when u have a cold is: ginger tea... but not from a tea bag... get fresh ginger... freeze it.. grate it into hot water... the drink starts off very citrusy kinda like lemon as time goes by when ur drinking it, it gets more & more gingery.. you freeze it cos it goes off quick and you dont use much for the tea.. unless u use ginger a lot for meals etc in which case u dont need to freeze it.. but it makes it easier to grate
THing is Chris Barrie is soooo good at making you hate rimmer, and feel somethng for rimmer, and frnakly really be impressed with Rimmer (as Ace), he's an amazing actor with an amazing character to plumb and evolve. He gets so good over the entire run :) Precisely with all these handicaps, but Rimmer deep down has a kernel of nobility to him.

@@holydiver73 you better not post any spoilers or it'll be 2hrs WOO for you.😄
I've been given permission to give spoilers by the King of the potato people. 🥔 🤴
I personally can't wait for Episode 5. Lol
@@travisboyle285 To be fair the next 3 episodes are all absolute classics, I just prefer #4 by a narrow margin.
You embraced red drawf
i love Kryten's little taranshula helper
You're gonna love the next episode Quarantine. Arguably peak peak Dwarf!
I've watched Red Dwarf so many times but this episode I completely forget about.
red dwarf introduced the entire sci-fi genre to me as a kid, was also the first time i saw comedy and outtakes
The fishbone earrings! Travis you are amazing
Another fun episode, the Rimmer-teers vs evil Jawas. Got lots of Robocop vibes from the scene of them salvaging and repairing Kryten
Really ?... I was waiting for the GG's to mention the similarities to Borgs from Star Trek. I guess though there are... now that you mention it.
@@paulwalsh2344- The POV shots are pure RoboCop parody.
@@joehoy9242 This was the infamous incident of director Juliet May putting the camera at his stomach level, while Craig Charles kept insisting, "No, no, it's his POV!", and it turned out she didn't know what POV means.
The best gals on the net and the best series on the tube. (Yes I'm in my 40s and British and always commenting here lol)
Can’t wait till they get to episode 6. Won’t say any more than that. 😊
Its got to be my favorite episode. Apart from the Ace of course.
Highest voted episode of all time
@@TroyConvers5000 by imdb n several others. Not My favourite but can see why it's rated top
When this episode was first aired at the end my old mum said "There was no need for that"
Mr flibble said his favourite episode is next 🐧
Paula. Queen of the smooth link to the "Like, comment, subscribe, and support us" segment.
Bravo.
It’s so great to see you both, so invested in the characters now😊😊😊
You are 100% right about them deep down really caring about Rimmer... even Cat! When Kryten say's " of course sir, you're part of the team" it is such a heart warming moment that always puts a smile on my face. The musketeers would say "All for one and one for all", but i've always preferred "Boys from the dwarf"
Moonlight speech in Red Dwarf Promised Land gets me.
Remember, we know exactly what would happen with Lister if he really applied himself. He was a full on chief engineer Dave "Spanners" Lister in Ace's universe.
And as for Rimmer, he may be a complete and total smegpot. But he's THEIR complete and total Smegpot. XD
The end theme was Lister's plan living at Fiji. Which was already under water at the time.
The only odd thing about this episode is they all can interact with Rimmer's body before they meet Legion and Rimmer gets his hard light drive.
They explain that the psi moon is responsible. It’s also why his H is missing. Everything is real there including Rimmer himself.
@@dcaslick yes it explains why the psi moon fantasies are real to him, but not how Lister and the crew can react with him.
I feel that the six episode series helped with the quality. Not having to do 15+ shows a season gives one time for reflection.
That probably would of been one of the many problems if Red Dwarf USA was made. The 24 episodes a year.
just to let you know, watching red dwarf with the commentary on is also amazing 😄
Is there anything more scary than Rimmer's psyche, and the typing scene was hilarious.
Chris Barrie is great in this but even better in the next episode. The next episode has probably my favourite performance from Chris Barrie.
Chris Barrie and Craig Charles didn't get along earlier in the show's production, but eventually grew to like each other.
When I first saw the bazookoid battle in this episode, I was then like "I so want a bazookoid!" LOL
Prime toxic masculine trait, they do feel a camaraderie for Rimmer, but they can't let him know it.
Cannot wait 'til they watch "Quarantine" next week!
Weirdly, this is one of the eoisodes i forgot the most.
But i will agree with you, the theme song is amazing. 😍
The speech in Red Dwarf The Promised Land always gets me. I watch it every once in awhile.
In case nobody's pointed it out yet, the cat's coat is the same one he wore in the Camille episode where he hand-slapped himself. The costume department recoloured it by hand, scribbling over all the white bits with yellow markers.
Chris Barrie also played the voice of the Unspeakable Master.
I wait with baited breath for these Red Dwarf videos, keep it up :)
Hello Gals , in reply to your comment about the show inevitably "falling off" , going down hill , you could not be more wrong , this show just keeps getting better and better with every new serason and episode , my personal favourite if you put a gun to my head and forced me to choose , would be the first episode of season 7 ""Tikka to ride"" can't wait to see your reaction , that episode and the "changling" xenomorph , the alien that changes shape , boxer shorts, football etc ,,, that also is up there on the list of greatest of all time .
if youve got a cold, with a sore throat, try chewing raw garlic... swallow it slowly...
also.. a good drink to have is red tea (no caffeine no need for sugar)
and another good drink not just for when u have a cold is: ginger tea... but not from a tea bag...
get fresh ginger... freeze it.. grate it into hot water... the drink starts off very citrusy kinda like lemon
as time goes by when ur drinking it, it gets more & more gingery.. you freeze it cos it goes off quick
and you dont use much for the tea.. unless u use ginger a lot for meals etc in which case u dont need
to freeze it.. but it makes it easier to grate
There's LOTS of "Taking the piss" type humor in front and behind the scenes! There was definitely a stress point reached, but that fact that it was years into it makes sense, people feel in a rut. Still plenty of great episodes to go!
