I did 4 12” Fi IB subs in a 90’s Cadillac Fleetwood using this method. I went way further though and cut the entire rear deck out and built everything up with MDF and use expanding urethane foam to fill the quarter panels to seal the trunk from the cabin. It played lower than any other system I ever built and only needed 500w per sub. Still my favorite build ever. Not many people know much about infinite baffle designs and there advantages. Well done.

Although a large ported box with a low tuning will sound similar with extra headroom in the bass extension, or just adding a pipe that treats the trunk as a slightly leaky ported box and have a 15Hz tuning. The low resonance won't cost you output up higher either compared to the same infinite baffle. Whilst you can use your trunk space, it will restrict the sound a bit.

@@666Necropsy The first time I tested a dipole sub with some super crappy 12" in a small room, I was instantly amazed because of the details. Even though the sub was totally busted. I kept thinking about it and ultimately got a car that had a trunk that was almost like made for having a sub in the middle. Did an install with good 12" sub and fell in love about the idea where there is no enclosures (for the bass at least).
Then after years I got two 18" Electro-Voice DL18MT's, old 90's PA subs for cheap and just fitted them on a big board. I tested them outside, as I'd been dreaming of a sub bass capable small(ish) PA -system that doesn't make the neighbours or anyone living nearby mad (even at like multiple miles away). Nowadays I myself pretty much hate the overly high SPL -oriented cars blasting some single note bass songs nearby. So I can imagine how it would feel waking up or noticing a bumping bass when you're going to sleep that just keeps on playing forever (in your usual forest raves, from 10pm to like 6am+).
For example one time we had just one simple big Peavey 2x18" PA sub enclosure and in the beginning of the night a few of my friends went close to the nearest house, more than a mile away (which also was behind a small hill) to check if the bass carries to there and when they got out of the car to listen, they said it sounded like there had been a party going in the nearby house.
I've tested the two 18" in a large wooden building and they went nicely down to 20 something Hz. One time I took them to a DJ gig in a really old bar in a wooden building. There I had some problems with uneven bass as I didn't have enough time to EQ the system.
I also had a pair of 15" "modern" car subs and they too sounded great outside WITHOUT an enclosure. And I bet the bass couldn't be heard after like 50 meters or so, but the first 10-20 were very nice. Inside an aparment they would shake the floor with Indigo Children (JLE Dub).
When I had the system in my car, I noticed that on the outside, the bass seemed to attenuate on the sides of the car, which makes sense as it worked kinda like a dipole. So I think one can blast their music much louder with a free air/infinite baffle sub system than they can with any enclosure without messing with the people around.

I've considered doing an infinite baffle in my rear deck with smaller drivers, only because I need both the trunk space and the passthrough into the cabin to be able to haul stuff around for work. I'm also considering a shallow transmission line mounted to the underside of the rear deck, but I'm concerned about how a shallow, wide line would perform.

Budget, throw two 18” stereo integrity HT-18s in there
Replace the skars with these, I promise you will be amazed , nothing wrong with the skars but the stereo integrity are better and will handle more power (not to mention they cost 199 each)
even though on 200 watts they sounded almost as loud as 2000 watts in my build- it’s just and IB thing brother - down low they only need single to double digit wattage to create carnage inside your car……and down low I mean 10-30hz notes 😂
I’m one of the guys that begged you to try IB in the first place so I’m a long time viewer and appreciate your channel.
    Peace brother

This is legit, never really thought of having the whole trunk as the enclosure. you def need some big speakers and a powerful amp for this build. Did you need to reinforce the trunk more or use dynomat?

I have to agree with you Josip. With the lack of compression, a lot of power wasn't really necessary for this build. When given a clean signal, it simply sounds good.

@@BudgetBassHead im having a hard time deciding making a good sounding wind machine against a big heavy box that will just get louder, but not sound as clean, if the infinuite baffle dont sound good, i will still have a baffle to use for a box, weird shape of the trunk is a pain in the ass, id rather just make a strong baffle, run low power and not have to worry about anything, hopefully

My first car was a 1978 Monte Carlo. This was in 1992 and I did my system like this. I removed the seat back and mounted two 15" subs in a panel that was sealed as best as possible between the cabin and trunk. Old school "surfboard" amp at 500 watts for the subs and another 250 watts for the mids, highs mounted in a nice flush mount rack right behind the the subs in the trunk. This was in high school. I did a killer upholstery job on the panel so anyone that sat in my back seat leaned against the 15's and waffle grills. The shit banged hard! My Motorola "brick" phone would bounce on the trunk lid. When I rolled up to school or a house party everyone knew I was coming. The car was also slammed with 15x8 reverse deep dish KMC spoons, fresh paint and crushed velour interior! My car would peel those reflectors off the road as I changed lanes. LOL.

I'm still upgrading my daily rides as I replace them!

I built quite many of these IB setups in the past four decades. Yes they do sound smooth, but I've learned a lot about myself since then. I kept burning up the subs/woofers because I kept wanting it louder lol. Many of my friends were satisfied with IB setups because they weren't looking for higher spl. They do sound great tho! Cheers!!

You are basically using your trunk as a big sealed enclosure. The better you seal around the edges of the baffle. The louder it got. Double or tripling up on the baffle and counter sinking them will help in SQ. From what I've found is that an infinite baffle requires a ton of space to unload from. It may be worth testing a single 18 centered with space on both sides. If you could then move it back and forth in the trunk to help get a desired tuning. But then it would be basically free air. It's more practical to design in vans and SUVs.

What's even more amazing is that I can hear the SQ coming through the recording here. Yes, I have a very good sound system on my computer. Still, the clarity comes through the mic and everything. I drive an SUV so infinite baffle isn't really on the table for me, but I am envious for sure!

This is exactly what i want to do with two HT-18 v3 subwoofers. My enclosure area is a little more tricky then yours is though so im going to have to go to a car audio place that can figure it out because of a hump where the enclosure starts leading into the trunk. I think it can be done though even if its jury rigged to work.
