Lip Synch: War Story - Aardman Animations (Short Film)

  • A stirring story from the Second World War in which the narrator, Bill, speaks out frankly about the bombing and the plumbing. His narrative, which is taken from a real interview, eases in and out of memory, revealing the astonishing resilience of ordinary people in the face of Hitler, subsidence and a deaf coalman.
Lip Synch was a series of five short films commissioned by Channel 4 in 1989. Nick Park's contribution to the series was the film Creature Comforts, which later won the Academy Award for Best Animated Short of 1990. Channel 4 screened the films as part of their Four-Mations UK season in November 1990.

Greetings from America! This has always been one of my favorite Aardman shorts. So much so, that if one looks carefully at my avatar, one can see that it's the smear frame of the dog getting stepped on. I've watched this short so many times because it's always reminded me of my grandfather. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge and had similarly bizarre and wacky adventures and mishaps. He drove a tank through a barn, ate an entire cow, inside and out, and made friends with a German soldier who was frozen to his tank. Anyway, that's my piece. Greetings from America!

Greetings from Langley B.C. Canada I have always loved Aardman animations. Beautifully creative and masterfully done. It is so crazy you guys recorded real people like Bill Perry and made a stop motion film out of it. 👏Cheers

Loved this as a kid, this guy's west country accent is great, it's a shame kids now wanna impersonate London accents all the time. Him talking about the Blitz, I imagine he was a Bristolian or a Janner (Plymothian), especially the way he says "I say's we be'er daash". Some of the older Janners I work with add an "S" to the words that don't often need it, I love it though.

The kids who want to impersonate London are Americans who believe that they're above everyone's culture.

He's a Bristolian and, judging by his accent, from Bedminster or Knowle.
Bristol and Plymouth accents are very different. 😊

@@christophernewman5027 He worked at BAC which was at Filton and he could see the lights from the bombing so must have been within a few miles of it.

Yes, but he went to Filton on the train, didn't he? If he lived near the BAC, he would have walked or cycled. 😊

This was very funny to watch, but it’s charm comes from the fact that it was voiced by a World War II survivor.
