  • Belur Math is situated in the western bank of the Hooghly river in Kolkata. It is the headquarters of Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission. It is a place of pilgrimage for people from all over the world professing different religious faiths. It is spread across an area of 40 acres of land. It was originally conceived by Swami Vivekananda. The foundation stone was laid by Swami Shivananda on 13 March 1929. Architecturally, this temple is an important place among the modern temples of India🛕. It incorporates the motifs of various religions, thus symbolizing the harmony of religions taught by Sri Ramakrishna. (The temple resembles the church, palace, mosque.)The sanctum has a marble statue of Sri Ramakrishna sitting on full-bloomed lotus.
To the south east of the old shrine stands Swami Vivekananda’s room, where he lived (articles used by him are still kept there). In the courtyard in front of this room stands the mango tree under which Swamiji used to sit and meet visitors and devotees.
It is better to take a Ferry ride ⛴ to Belur Math from Dakshineshwar Kali temple. Ticket fees is Rs. 11/- and will just take 20 minutes to reach there. Dakshineshwar Kali Temple is the Kashi Temple of Kolkata. It is about 16.7 km from Belur Math. Hooghly River is the Ganga of West Bengal and is 260 km long.
