Caleb Brown im kind of disappointed they didn’t do things her way at the concert hall. It would have been less action, but way more meaningful I think. If Allison just walked up and got her attention and gave a look that said “hey, it’s ok.” Sometimes I think there’s missed opportunity to make a story more powerful by being less “cool”.
@@ard1805 I think that the purpose of choosing Luther's way instead of Allison's was to show that those guys only know the 'forceful' way out, it defenitely made Vanya mad and they may even have caused the apocalypse because of that. If you notice, Allison's way was working when she showed up in the audience and smiled at Vanya, and Vanya smiled back. Also it shows how disfunctional the family is, with a party clearly not trusting the other.
I agree Caleb accept grace has a point. I do feel she should came off more Glamorous and Narcissistic for least the first half of the season while slowly changing into the woman who really cares about her sister and wants to help and understand her. I do like Allison. I liked her more second half of the season. Now i never read the comic. But i talked to those who have and they said she does come off very Narcissistic in comics.
Klaus is my favourite character, but I felt like Vanya and Allison's relationship was the heart of the show, if not just Vanya's internal struggle. But I do relate to her most since my family is insane. But Klaus, especially his relationship with Diego, definitely gave the family bond we needed. Diego always driving him around was hilarious to me. Cha Cha might be my favourite character, her attitude is just hilarious.
@Kai I agree. I felt like Allison was meant to be the heart of the show between her compassion toward Vanya and explored romance for Luther. The love between her and both of those characters definitely showed more than anyone else.

ItsAlexandersChannel I think that’s what we’ll get in the second season. We see them transform back into children right before they time travel so I think season 2 will take place in their childhood. Their father will receive more depth and character development because of this and the apocalypse will be avoided by them making Vanya feel like she belongs. That’s my theory.
Allison was one of my FAVORITE characters. She was the only character that tried to fix the mistakes she made in her past. Her acting was superb and believable. The way she looked at #7 seemed like genuine sisterly love. I do believe the writers messed up with her celebrity. She was always able to walk around without people wanting autographs/pics and such, which was odd.
Klaus to me was the most complex character. The fact his ability to conjure the dead acted as a quote on quote mental illness and drew to take copious amount of drugs so that he didn’t have to listen to the voices and deal with the dead. That he could just put his ability on mute with drugs because he wanted to, because he was afraid. His own ability acted as a catalyst to his fear. And the idea of getting clean to over come his fear to truly use his own ability to over come the addiction his power gave him. It was a like poetic symmetry. And all of that lead to his life choices and the way he acted and behaved to the whole world ending situation. Now that to me was just mostly subtext and a little exposition. Great writing
Maybe they made those choices with Allison's character because she used her powers to get fame. Maybe that is why she isn't as glamorous as she should be because she isn't that person. Her powers forced people to think of her as that person. Also, throughout the show, people recognize her from some pretty ridiculous unglamorous movies.
My favorite characters (only the Hargreeves): 1. Klaus (and Ben): Sheehan's performance was the most dynamic. 2. Diego: I just wish we saw his powers 3. Number 5: Gallagher's performance is the second strongest performance; he'd be higher if I wasn't such a Diego fan. 4. Allison 5. Vanya: I did skip most of her storyline because I wanted to get to the White Violin 6. Luther: Every decision he made, in terms of treating Vanya, drove me INSANE.
I absolutely couldn't stand Luther, he suffers from Cyclops syndrome. The guy who needs to be the leader and whose first call is always the "necessary" evil sacrifice which then always backfires spectacular. He was such an incompetent dumbass.

Klaus Ben Five Diego Grace Cha Cha Pogo Allison Hazel The Handler Vanya Luther Hargreeves Leonard Also, how are people struggling with the halfway point of the season? I was fully invested in every episode, and couldn't wait to watch the next one at the end of the day. And how dare you say Ben was nothing? He was so important to Klaus's character growth.
***SPOILERS*** I actually really LOVED Allison, I think the actress did a good job of selling the troubles she had with using her powers and the consequences it had over her relationships with loved ones. I do think she didn't sell the idea of her being a big-time actress but I was more interested in the shades of her character we did see, rather than the shades the show never seemed interested in painting (but I could understand why one might be annoyed by it). I actually found Vanya to be the most obnoxious and I sympathized with her at first, but she seemed so dismissive of her siblings as the season went on despite some of them having a clear intent of connecting to her, and I was happy about the ending just because I did feel like the family's dynamics would benefit from a reset.
@adamemile I felt the exact way you did about those 2 characters. Vanya really irritated me in the second half of the show with how naive and blinded she was about this stranger. She didn't take the time to understand why her family was trying to protect her, and she proved exactly why what her father hid from her was totally justified.
I would have liked to see Vanya's moods swing to a larger degree once she went off her meds. Something akin to a manic depressive would have sold her instability and the eventual results of it more effectively IMO.
@Алексей Романов You have to remember that there are 2 sides. The other kids thought she distanced herself from them as well. None of them seem close. They all had hard childhoods and were manipulated not just her.
Only Luther actively tried to lock her in the cell, and he only did so because she sliced her sister's fucking neck. The others wanted her out, but needed her in there whilst she was so unstable she would kill people just by losing her temper. Likewise, her father locked her up only after she murdered multiple nannies because she didn't want to eat porridge, and it was clear that she couldn't control herself.
I wholeheartedly agree with your thoughts on Diego and Luther and especially Hazel and Cha-Cha. But we seem to disagree on Allison. I do feel that the whole Mother trying to do right by her daughter angle was a bit cliché and overplayed, but during all of Allison’s scenes that didn’t involve her daughter, I really enjoyed her. I felt that she, out of the 7, was the third most unique, behind of course, Klaus and Five. She gave me a feeling of warmness and familiarity which served to draw the series back from being TOO out in the beyond and to make it more connected to human life in our real world. And that might seem to be a bit of an odd statement because this character has super powers AND is a famous movie star, but I just felt something emanating from her.
Yeah, I really liked Allison as well. I'd swap her spot with Vanya's. I think Vanya needed to get markedly more unstable after she went off her meds to really sell what ends up happening. I would have liked to see more mood swings from her: Joy to rage to sadness and regret.
Was looking to see if anyone else thought this. I couldnt stand luther, did nobody else notice the actor making odd facial choices? Like was the on purpose? His acting is terrible In this although to be honest, of the 7 only the kid and the one who talks to ghosts did a good job and I'd actually put alison at third after them. The whole thing was a story of questionable choices.

Agreed. That he was supposedly the leader of the group blew my mind. He had a weak presence, no charisma or influence over the others, and made inefficient choices.
Yeah, I mean for Tom Hopper, he was fine in the role, there were certain scenes where he really sold the frustration and character of Luther very well, but for his particular story in the show just wasn't strong enough
His arc is coming to terms with the abuse he and his siblings suffered and the abuse he's inflicting/inflicted on the others in the name of their father. The others have already basically accepted their father's abuse and neglect; Luther gets the deprogramming arc, so to speak. He'll probably get a 'become the leader' arc next season as he learns to separate his father's teachings from what the group actually needs.
Yeah Luther is number one for a reason. He names them from weakest to strongest, according to the comic books. I think his arc is maybe learning to do stuff rather than be cooped up. He kinda learned that then unlearned it trying to be Superman for Alison.
Grace I have to disagree with you on Reginald Hargreeves. Locking up a very young child in a mausoleum when he is constantly and literally haunted is just abusive. As is sending young children inti life or death situations and not allowing them to have any fun except for specific times on Saturdays. Also, for the most part, these kids were experiments to him.
Yeah, see, Sheehan was my problem. He's why I quit Misfits without finishing, and why I'm stalled at Episode 8 for *this* show. His characters seem to specialize in whining/whinging without communicating. He's that character whose eyes bug out and sputters instead of saying "Umm, hey, there's a guy with an axe behind you."
I really enjoyed the show with Number 5, Klaus and Vanya being my favourite characters. Insane music that MUST have been pricey. My problems with the show were Luther and Allison as they just seemed super bland and unrelatable. Allison's powers were so disappointing as the show never fully utilised what could have been. Leonard's actor sucked. Although his backstory was well written, I kept wondering how Vanya wasn't creeped out by him at all. Hazel and Cha-Cha weren't great either as their characters never fully clicked for me. Personally I had 0 pacing issues and the show was a blast from start to finish.
As a Dark Horse fan it stings to hear you describe them as so niche, mostly because it's so true. I really wish that Dark Horse could figure out a way to find the level of success Image has these days, because the stories they've published have meant so much to me over the years.

Diego is WAY cooler in the comic. The main issue is he is suppose to be a Rambo/Batman-lite type and in the show he just seems like an angry teenager with a blade.
I interpreted the character of Allison pretty differently. It was more somebody who WAS the over-the-top glamorous Hollywood actress and is now moving past it. Especially with that magazine of her ex and kid, and the cop who was all "my wife and I really preferred you in", she struck me as somebody who had just gotten off the Hollywood fame ride and was really disorientated - and I felt like her choices made sense as somebody who was torn between where she was and being with her daughter, not to mention someone who has unresolved issues around being a sister, a mother and arguably a soulmate to others. I felt like she was able to sell that fairly well but I'm not sure it's something most people were open to, especially given that time in the series is divided between so many characters with so much going on.
Deb Bowers I don’t even know where to start. The dialogue sucks, plots are predictable from a mile and a quarter away. Superpowers? More like super-lameness, “we barely made it out alive” most used phrase. Who cares about two killers (Cha Cha & Hazel) What happened to Ben? Dude for real now. What?!?!
Loved the show. Number 5, Klaus and Cha-cha & Hazel were the stand outs for me. Unfortunately some of the other main characters were kind of "meh" (Diego and Allison mainly). I also felt weird about Ellen Page, i can't quite put my finger on it, maybe it's just her character but sometimes i just felt like she belonged on a completely different show than everybody else i don't know how to explain it... (but i guess it's quite fitting for Vanya) Other than that i loved the show, the storytelling, the music and the vfx were great.
I agree with everything but Your Allison ranking. She’s a bit higher on my scale bc she’s actually a really deep broken character. She’s also the most “level headed”. I truly enjoyed her scenes.
Loved the show, I'm surprised by the bottom two liked tho. Allison was the only one who really reached out to Vanya and how she navigated without using her ability was well done. The only thing I didn't buy with Diego was the romance. My least favorite character was hands down Luthor. Horrible leadership. Horrible brother. All he really cared about seemed to be Allison and his father.
I kinda feel personally attacked by the assertion that the art in the comic is "bad"... Bad on what metric? It is some of the most expressive art I've seen in a comic. I admit that it may be niche, but I can't even imagine a reason to call it "bad".
I'm inclined to agree. I think the art in the comic is ugly, but not bad, if you get what I mean? The angles are sharp, the characters look rough and not super-pretty-perfect, which I really think is less to do with ability and more to do with style and tone.
I guess my point would be "Would Umbrella Acadamy be better with the semi-photorealistic art-style seen in mainstream comics?" and my answer would be "clearly no." This book takes place in an ugly, angular, non-pretty world, and the art reflects that. I feel a similar way about something like Jeff Lemire's Essex County, which is a deeply personal story that would not be served with a more polished art-style.
like... it's not ok to lock your child who sees the dead in a mausoleum, or have them kill people and fight crime, and lots of other stuff. even if the show tried, id never get convinced that reginald is actually a good guy.
That's the thing that weirded me out with this review. Hargreeves did a bunch of fucked up stuff to literal children (and fucked up stuff to adults too, as we see with Luther). He was abusive and neglectful, and even if he did actually like the children, that means absolutely nothing considering the way he treated them.
I wondered why Alison and Diego was on the bottom, but after watching I totally agreed. Diego scenes came off like a cheap CW show like the arrow, and I often wondered if Alison was a big celebrity why didn’t she have security guards and a mob of cheering fans after her? They definitely could could work more on their characters but the show was overall amazing!
Allison should lead and Five should be second. Allison is the most grown up. I only wouldn't put Five as the leader because he's affected by all that time alone and not a great team player.
One of the problems (besides that 5-MINUTE DANCE NUMBER... 😒) was equating characters powers to more well known characters. So when Diego, for example, doesn't approach a situation like Bullseye when there was a recent program displaying what those powers can do, we think "wait." And are taken out of the experience.
So #1 is Collosus, # 2 is Bullseye, #3 is Silver Fox, #4 is Constatine, #5 is Nightcrawler, #6 is Doc Oc, and #7 Jean Grey? The chimp is beast and the dead daddy is professor x?
The dance in ep #1? Wow, that part was great IMO and I have went back and watched just that scene multiple times, it was perfect in that spot, in that ep... my god I was hoping to see another one again in a later ep
My thoughts generally about the show were positive. I feel it was a fun quirky watch. I feel like some of the power sets not being comic accurate was kinda a letdown, knowing the comics, I was excited to see the possibilities that Netflix would tackle. But they kinda depowered some of them in that sense. They never once stated that Diego's power was holding his breath indefinitely, which I imagine would aid his knife throwing. And Rumour's powers came off more like Mind Control when its supposed to be like localised reality warping. And Seance's changes were actually fine with me, his powers wouldn't have been practical and prolly expensive. I have a lot of thoughts that I cant contain in one message, but I really liked the show and recommend it to everyone.
I loved the the entire show and the performances, but I kind of wished that they should've explored the fact that they were outed as superheroes to the world. You would think that that would have more consequences. Also, I found that the teenage version of the characters more interesting. Great review as always Grace, keep up the good work.
I've been waiting for this review all day! Also, lol, yeah, Netflix is the only entertainment service I pay for and I'm sticking with it. Only ever been tempted to buy another because Hulu has American Dad and Canadian Netflix doesn't, lol.
This is such a perfect snow day! I've been bingewatching this show all day and was curious if you had done a review for it. And now I have something to look forward to after I watch these last couple of episodes. You're just too awesome!
I have to disagree about Allison Grace! She was a great character who understood and owned up to her flaws. Van ya was my least favorite character as she came off as whiny and stupid especially with that forced romance with the obvious bad guy.
Well I would put number 5 at the top of my list and let me just defend Allison because the actress they chose is absolutely beautiful and her power involved mind control which she used to advance her career
I hated Klaus until he he met Dave. Until that point he just seemed like the character they threw in their for comedic effect and I did not enjoy it. However, after Dave i agree he does become much more compelling and better character wise. I would probably put him at either my 3rd or 4th favorite overall. Vanya was my favorite due to her story and character development. My least favorite was Luther. He just never grew as a character and he story was pretty weak in my opinion.

You loved how Allison's powers were factored in the show? In all combined 10 episodes there was only three exampled uses of her power. And up until the 2nd use of her power trait which occurred in episode 8, it wasn't clear through most of the show if her power was psycho hypnotic or probability control. I feel her power was frankly nerfed because it writes the conflict ends of the story in a corner. If you could just control situations by vocal command it takes a lot of the challenge out of situations. I understand the under use of her abilities for story base reasons- but, It's hard not to realise when a characters decisions are dumbed down to make ordeals more crucial for the structure of story development. And I kinda think that creates nagging faults in her character build.
She's described as one of the most recognizable people in the world and has had at least one tell-all book about her. Every knows about her one trick, so she can't really use it anymore.
I'm so thrilled to see you and more reviewers are watching this show! It's a brilliant nod to the comics. However, I must disagree with your opinion on the art style (brought by Gabriel Ba). It's really expressive and bold, a right fit for the tone of the comics and Gerard Way's original vision for the characters and setting. Plus, Ba and his brother Fabio Moon have won several Eisner Awards for their work on comics, can't have been for nothing. I mean, if you don't like the art I respect your opinion, but to say that that's the reason why it didn't go mainstream is misguided.

I was pleasantly surprised to see they actually spent enough money to make the show effects believable. I have never heard of the comic but was intrigued by the story throughout I think this is my favorite show on Netflix now that Daredevil is gone.
I LOVED this series. Normally i hate time travel (see x-men) because it gets confusing and cluttered and in the end it feels like a total cop-out. But TUA has done the best use of time travel i've seen. I was kind of shocked that people had a hard time finishing the show, I accidentally binged it on a weekend. But i agree, Diego felt completely irrelevant, and if they cut him out of the show, nothing would change. Plot wise, character wise, he didn't really do much. At least Allison had a key role to play in the narrative. And Klaus, LOVED HIM TO DEATH. Pun intended, he was the best character in the show by far, and with the current over-saturation of flat, stereotypical characters, he was one of the most complex and well fleshed out character I've seen in a while.
I really enjoyed this show! It was like the streaming, live action X-Men show I always wanted but never received. Disney Streaming better watch itself. Netflix isn’t going anywhere!

I liked this series very much, it was different without being a turnoff if anything it made it more intriguing. Watching the series makes me want to pick up the comic, but I likely won't, unless I know for certain there is no season 2 in the works.
I love The Umbrella Academy! I watched the first 2 episodes Friday night and then watched the rest of season 1 on Saturday - and I'm ready for season 2! I also agree that Klaus and Five are the best characters, and Hazel & Cha-Cha were great. I also really liked Allison and Vanya's relationship. It did surprise me that Ellen Page wasn't a favorite for me, considering she was the only one I was really familiar with (besides Aidan Gallagher from a Nickelodeon show my son used to watch) but I think that was just her character being very subdued in the beginning and then progressing and opening up as the show went on. I haven't read the comics yet but now I want to!
They NEED to have a season 2! I Klaus was for sure my favorite but I really did like Allison and Diego especially Diego and Klaus. I hope to see more of Allison’s powers and Diego’s and more BEN!
So glad you reviewed it because I LOOOOVE this show!!! So just a quick note, you probably won't see this but I recently moved to Dubai from Boston just after graduating college at the tale end of last year for a really great job opportunity, and Netflix is literally the only streaming service everyone is talking about. I work with people between the ages of 22 and early 30s so millennials and with every major Netflix original that drops like the Ted Bundy tapes, of Umbrella Academy, or the Fyre Festival documentary, it's a water cooler discussion every Monday morning. Hulu isn't international so people have heard of it, it's just not a thing unless you have a VPN. no one has heard of the Disney or WB streaming apps so while in the US the conversation might be going beyond Netflix, I think internationally Netflix is still king.

I'm so glad you posted this because I was dying to hear your take- which is pretty darn spot on. I only watched the first half of your review because I've only seen the first episode and don't want spoilers. Now I have a new reason to finish the series so I can go back and watch your character rankings. I like pairing this with Doom Patrol. It makes a nice back to back viewing experience and plan to get through the series that way- one episode a week on Friday nights. I am loving the show already but it reminds me of a rich desert in that it's best in smaller servings.
The young version of themselves have such great chemistry together compared to the adult version of the 7. Honestly want a spin-off of the children when they were being trained up to their peak before they one by one left the academy.
Awesome review and cant wait to watch it, I'm a fan of the comic and was surprised it was even getting a show. I hard disagree on calling the Umbrella Academy comic's artwork "bad". I will also preface my opinion with this - When Umbrella Academy's comic was released I went to an art school and majored in illustration for comics so the view of the people around me might have been different than the general public. I wont say that it's artwork for everyone and maybe it did turn off some because of how non traditional it was, but I do think there's a beauty in it's simplistic design and clear silhouettes similar to the artwork for HellBoy, and so it had a similar audience size. I know for a fact that many people thought this was a vanity project rather than a "real comic" when it first was announced, that's actually why I didn't pick it up off the bat. Keep up the good work :)

Their father will receive more depth and character development because of this and the apocalypse will be avoided by them making Vanya feel like she belongs. That’s my theory.

Allison was one of my FAVORITE characters. She was the only character that tried to fix the mistakes she made in her past. Her acting was superb and believable. The way she looked at #7 seemed like genuine sisterly love. I do believe the writers messed up with her celebrity. She was always able to walk around without people wanting autographs/pics and such, which was odd.
When you realise 5 never got a name and that Allison rumoured her way to being a famous actress...

Klaus to me was the most complex character. The fact his ability to conjure the dead acted as a quote on quote mental illness and drew to take copious amount of drugs so that he didn’t have to listen to the voices and deal with the dead. That he could just put his ability on mute with drugs because he wanted to, because he was afraid. His own ability acted as a catalyst to his fear. And the idea of getting clean to over come his fear to truly use his own ability to over come the addiction his power gave him. It was a like poetic symmetry. And all of that lead to his life choices and the way he acted and behaved to the whole world ending situation. Now that to me was just mostly subtext and a little exposition. Great writing
Maybe they made those choices with Allison's character because she used her powers to get fame. Maybe that is why she isn't as glamorous as she should be because she isn't that person. Her powers forced people to think of her as that person. Also, throughout the show, people recognize her from some pretty ridiculous unglamorous movies.

I actually really LOVED Allison, I think the actress did a good job of selling the troubles she had with using her powers and the consequences it had over her relationships with loved ones. I do think she didn't sell the idea of her being a big-time actress but I was more interested in the shades of her character we did see, rather than the shades the show never seemed interested in painting (but I could understand why one might be annoyed by it). I actually found Vanya to be the most obnoxious and I sympathized with her at first, but she seemed so dismissive of her siblings as the season went on despite some of them having a clear intent of connecting to her, and I was happy about the ending just because I did feel like the family's dynamics would benefit from a reset.
@adamemile I felt the exact way you did about those 2 characters. Vanya really irritated me in the second half of the show with how naive and blinded she was about this stranger. She didn't take the time to understand why her family was trying to protect her, and she proved exactly why what her father hid from her was totally justified.
I would have liked to see Vanya's moods swing to a larger degree once she went off her meds. Something akin to a manic depressive would have sold her instability and the eventual results of it more effectively IMO.
@Алексей Романов You have to remember that there are 2 sides. The other kids thought she distanced herself from them as well. None of them seem close. They all had hard childhoods and were manipulated not just her.
Only Luther actively tried to lock her in the cell, and he only did so because she sliced her sister's fucking neck. The others wanted her out, but needed her in there whilst she was so unstable she would kill people just by losing her temper. Likewise, her father locked her up only after she murdered multiple nannies because she didn't want to eat porridge, and it was clear that she couldn't control herself.

I wholeheartedly agree with your thoughts on Diego and Luther and especially Hazel and Cha-Cha. But we seem to disagree on Allison.
I do feel that the whole Mother trying to do right by her daughter angle was a bit cliché and overplayed, but during all of Allison’s scenes that didn’t involve her daughter, I really enjoyed her.
I felt that she, out of the 7, was the third most unique, behind of course, Klaus and Five. She gave me a feeling of warmness and familiarity which served to draw the series back from being TOO out in the beyond and to make it more connected to human life in our real world. And that might seem to be a bit of an odd statement because this character has super powers AND is a famous movie star, but I just felt something emanating from her.
Yeah, I really liked Allison as well. I'd swap her spot with Vanya's. I think Vanya needed to get markedly more unstable after she went off her meds to really sell what ends up happening. I would have liked to see more mood swings from her: Joy to rage to sadness and regret.

Yeah, I mean for Tom Hopper, he was fine in the role, there were certain scenes where he really sold the frustration and character of Luther very well, but for his particular story in the show just wasn't strong enough

His arc is coming to terms with the abuse he and his siblings suffered and the abuse he's inflicting/inflicted on the others in the name of their father. The others have already basically accepted their father's abuse and neglect; Luther gets the deprogramming arc, so to speak. He'll probably get a 'become the leader' arc next season as he learns to separate his father's teachings from what the group actually needs.
Yeah Luther is number one for a reason. He names them from weakest to strongest, according to the comic books.

Grace I have to disagree with you on Reginald Hargreeves. Locking up a very young child in a mausoleum when he is constantly and literally haunted is just abusive. As is sending young children inti life or death situations and not allowing them to have any fun except for specific times on Saturdays. Also, for the most part, these kids were experiments to him.

Yeah, see, Sheehan was my problem. He's why I quit Misfits without finishing, and why I'm stalled at Episode 8 for *this* show. His characters seem to specialize in whining/whinging without communicating. He's that character whose eyes bug out and sputters instead of saying "Umm, hey, there's a guy with an axe behind you."

I really enjoyed the show with Number 5, Klaus and Vanya being my favourite characters. Insane music that MUST have been pricey. My problems with the show were Luther and Allison as they just seemed super bland and unrelatable. Allison's powers were so disappointing as the show never fully utilised what could have been. Leonard's actor sucked. Although his backstory was well written, I kept wondering how Vanya wasn't creeped out by him at all. Hazel and Cha-Cha weren't great either as their characters never fully clicked for me. Personally I had 0 pacing issues and the show was a blast from start to finish.

Diego is WAY cooler in the comic. The main issue is he is suppose to be a Rambo/Batman-lite type and in the show he just seems like an angry teenager with a blade.
I interpreted the character of Allison pretty differently. It was more somebody who WAS the over-the-top glamorous Hollywood actress and is now moving past it. Especially with that magazine of her ex and kid, and the cop who was all "my wife and I really preferred you in", she struck me as somebody who had just gotten off the Hollywood fame ride and was really disorientated - and I felt like her choices made sense as somebody who was torn between where she was and being with her daughter, not to mention someone who has unresolved issues around being a sister, a mother and arguably a soulmate to others. I felt like she was able to sell that fairly well but I'm not sure it's something most people were open to, especially given that time in the series is divided between so many characters with so much going on.
I loved the Umbrella Academy and will be very disappointed if we dont get a second season.
Wasn't expecting much from this show, but I finished absolutely loving it.

Loved the show. Number 5, Klaus and Cha-cha & Hazel were the stand outs for me. Unfortunately some of the other main characters were kind of "meh" (Diego and Allison mainly). I also felt weird about Ellen Page, i can't quite put my finger on it, maybe it's just her character but sometimes i just felt like she belonged on a completely different show than everybody else i don't know how to explain it... (but i guess it's quite fitting for Vanya)
Other than that i loved the show, the storytelling, the music and the vfx were great.
I agree with everything but Your Allison ranking. She’s a bit higher on my scale bc she’s actually a really deep broken character. She’s also the most “level headed”. I truly enjoyed her scenes.
Loved the show, I'm surprised by the bottom two liked tho. Allison was the only one who really reached out to Vanya and how she navigated without using her ability was well done. The only thing I didn't buy with Diego was the romance. My least favorite character was hands down Luthor. Horrible leadership. Horrible brother. All he really cared about seemed to be Allison and his father.
I kinda feel personally attacked by the assertion that the art in the comic is "bad"... Bad on what metric? It is some of the most expressive art I've seen in a comic. I admit that it may be niche, but I can't even imagine a reason to call it "bad".
I'm inclined to agree. I think the art in the comic is ugly, but not bad, if you get what I mean? The angles are sharp, the characters look rough and not super-pretty-perfect, which I really think is less to do with ability and more to do with style and tone.
I guess my point would be "Would Umbrella Acadamy be better with the semi-photorealistic art-style seen in mainstream comics?" and my answer would be "clearly no." This book takes place in an ugly, angular, non-pretty world, and the art reflects that. I feel a similar way about something like Jeff Lemire's Essex County, which is a deeply personal story that would not be served with a more polished art-style.

That's the thing that weirded me out with this review. Hargreeves did a bunch of fucked up stuff to literal children (and fucked up stuff to adults too, as we see with Luther). He was abusive and neglectful, and even if he did actually like the children, that means absolutely nothing considering the way he treated them.

I wondered why Alison and Diego was on the bottom, but after watching I totally agreed. Diego scenes came off like a cheap CW show like the arrow, and I often wondered if Alison was a big celebrity why didn’t she have security guards and a mob of cheering fans after her? They definitely could could work more on their characters but the show was overall amazing!

One of the problems (besides that 5-MINUTE DANCE NUMBER... 😒) was equating characters powers to more well known characters. So when Diego, for example, doesn't approach a situation like Bullseye when there was a recent program displaying what those powers can do, we think "wait." And are taken out of the experience.
That dance number was the best part.

My thoughts generally about the show were positive. I feel it was a fun quirky watch. I feel like some of the power sets not being comic accurate was kinda a letdown, knowing the comics, I was excited to see the possibilities that Netflix would tackle. But they kinda depowered some of them in that sense. They never once stated that Diego's power was holding his breath indefinitely, which I imagine would aid his knife throwing. And Rumour's powers came off more like Mind Control when its supposed to be like localised reality warping. And Seance's changes were actually fine with me, his powers wouldn't have been practical and prolly expensive. I have a lot of thoughts that I cant contain in one message, but I really liked the show and recommend it to everyone.

I loved the the entire show and the performances, but I kind of wished that they should've explored the fact that they were outed as superheroes to the world. You would think that that would have more consequences. Also, I found that the teenage version of the characters more interesting. Great review as always Grace, keep up the good work.

I have to disagree about Allison Grace! She was a great character who understood and owned up to her flaws. Van ya was my least favorite character as she came off as whiny and stupid especially with that forced romance with the obvious bad guy.
Well I would put number 5 at the top of my list and let me just defend Allison because the actress they chose is absolutely beautiful and her power involved mind control which she used to advance her career
I hated Klaus until he he met Dave. Until that point he just seemed like the character they threw in their for comedic effect and I did not enjoy it. However, after Dave i agree he does become much more compelling and better character wise. I would probably put him at either my 3rd or 4th favorite overall. Vanya was my favorite due to her story and character development. My least favorite was Luther. He just never grew as a character and he story was pretty weak in my opinion.

I really wanted to have a Donut after watching this show..pity that my local Donut shop closed down this week!.
You loved how Allison's powers were factored in the show? In all combined 10 episodes there was only three exampled uses of her power. And up until the 2nd use of her power trait which occurred in episode 8, it wasn't clear through most of the show if her power was psycho hypnotic or probability control. I feel her power was frankly nerfed because it writes the conflict ends of the story in a corner. If you could just control situations by vocal command it takes a lot of the challenge out of situations. I understand the under use of her abilities for story base reasons- but, It's hard not to realise when a characters decisions are dumbed down to make ordeals more crucial for the structure of story development. And I kinda think that creates nagging faults in her character build.
She's described as one of the most recognizable people in the world and has had at least one tell-all book about her. Every knows about her one trick, so she can't really use it anymore.
I'm so thrilled to see you and more reviewers are watching this show! It's a brilliant nod to the comics.
However, I must disagree with your opinion on the art style (brought by Gabriel Ba). It's really expressive and bold, a right fit for the tone of the comics and Gerard Way's original vision for the characters and setting. Plus, Ba and his brother Fabio Moon have won several Eisner Awards for their work on comics, can't have been for nothing.
I mean, if you don't like the art I respect your opinion, but to say that that's the reason why it didn't go mainstream is misguided.

I was pleasantly surprised to see they actually spent enough money to make the show effects believable. I have never heard of the comic but was intrigued by the story throughout I think this is my favorite show on Netflix now that Daredevil is gone.
I LOVED this series. Normally i hate time travel (see x-men) because it gets confusing and cluttered and in the end it feels like a total cop-out. But TUA has done the best use of time travel i've seen.
I was kind of shocked that people had a hard time finishing the show, I accidentally binged it on a weekend. But i agree, Diego felt completely irrelevant, and if they cut him out of the show, nothing would change. Plot wise, character wise, he didn't really do much. At least Allison had a key role to play in the narrative.
And Klaus, LOVED HIM TO DEATH. Pun intended, he was the best character in the show by far, and with the current over-saturation of flat, stereotypical characters, he was one of the most complex and well fleshed out character I've seen in a while.
I really enjoyed this show! It was like the streaming, live action X-Men show I always wanted but never received. Disney Streaming better watch itself. Netflix isn’t going anywhere!

I love The Umbrella Academy! I watched the first 2 episodes Friday night and then watched the rest of season 1 on Saturday - and I'm ready for season 2! I also agree that Klaus and Five are the best characters, and Hazel & Cha-Cha were great. I also really liked Allison and Vanya's relationship. It did surprise me that Ellen Page wasn't a favorite for me, considering she was the only one I was really familiar with (besides Aidan Gallagher from a Nickelodeon show my son used to watch) but I think that was just her character being very subdued in the beginning and then progressing and opening up as the show went on. I haven't read the comics yet but now I want to!

They NEED to have a season 2! I Klaus was for sure my favorite but I really did like Allison and Diego especially Diego and Klaus. I hope to see more of Allison’s powers and Diego’s and more BEN!

So glad you reviewed it because I LOOOOVE this show!!! So just a quick note, you probably won't see this but I recently moved to Dubai from Boston just after graduating college at the tale end of last year for a really great job opportunity, and Netflix is literally the only streaming service everyone is talking about. I work with people between the ages of 22 and early 30s so millennials and with every major Netflix original that drops like the Ted Bundy tapes, of Umbrella Academy, or the Fyre Festival documentary, it's a water cooler discussion every Monday morning. Hulu isn't international so people have heard of it, it's just not a thing unless you have a VPN. no one has heard of the Disney or WB streaming apps so while in the US the conversation might be going beyond Netflix, I think internationally Netflix is still king.

Umbrella Academy have three books Vol. 1 Apocalypse Suite, Vol. 2 Dallas, ( All about JFK Assassination) Vol. 3 Hotel Oblivion ( The evil Dr. Terminal). Netflix showed Volume 1.

I'm so glad you posted this because I was dying to hear your take- which is pretty darn spot on. I only watched the first half of your review because I've only seen the first episode and don't want spoilers. Now I have a new reason to finish the series so I can go back and watch your character rankings. I like pairing this with Doom Patrol. It makes a nice back to back viewing experience and plan to get through the series that way- one episode a week on Friday nights. I am loving the show already but it reminds me of a rich desert in that it's best in smaller servings.
The young version of themselves have such great chemistry together compared to the adult version of the 7. Honestly want a spin-off of the children when they were being trained up to their peak before they one by one left the academy.

Awesome review and cant wait to watch it, I'm a fan of the comic and was surprised it was even getting a show.
I hard disagree on calling the Umbrella Academy comic's artwork "bad". I will also preface my opinion with this - When Umbrella Academy's comic was released I went to an art school and majored in illustration for comics so the view of the people around me might have been different than the general public.
I wont say that it's artwork for everyone and maybe it did turn off some because of how non traditional it was, but I do think there's a beauty in it's simplistic design and clear silhouettes similar to the artwork for HellBoy, and so it had a similar audience size. I know for a fact that many people thought this was a vanity project rather than a "real comic" when it first was announced, that's actually why I didn't pick it up off the bat.

I have to agree. I'm unfamiliar with the comic so I had to look up some pictures. The style may not be for everyone but calling the artwork bad is a misunderstanding.
