  • In this Blender tutorial we will be learning how to freeze a smoke simulation. This can be very useful and can give you some pretty cool results. I will be showing you how to just have a single frame of smoke and how to pause the simulation and resume it at a different point in the animation. If you have suggestions for another Blender tutorial let me know in the comments!

    TO ANYONE FOR WHOM FREEZING DOESN'T WORK:
    If you go into the particle system's folder, you will find a folder for both "config" and "data". You need to delete both folder's contents, and leave in the last frame you wish to keep!

    I was making a GFX, dual wielding shotguns, he was pumping one of them in one hand and shooting one in the other, but I am not a big expert on smoke particles, but I still wanted to have a smoke effect coming from the ejected shell from the unloaded shotgun, but since it was a GFX and not an animation I had no idea what to do. This helped me, a ton, thanks.

    Can you take a single frame in the cache and append that to another blender project to add in a still explosion?
    I have a very high poly animated object that I need to add an explosion to. I can’t composite the explosion in later because I need the shadows from the smoke, but appending a 100 frame explosion into an already laggy viewport will not work

    Hi! I tried this but now its only showing the particle frame on that particular frame in blender, and not showing it on any other frames. Any ideas what i might have done wrong here?

      The method in this video to freeze simulations isn't ideal, as deleting baked data isn't something you're supposed to do. Instead, you can animate the time scale from 1 to 0 at where you want the simulation to freeze. The only small issue for my method is that the simulation won't be completely frozen, but it moves extremely slowly. Still not noticeable if you ask me, and it fixes way more issues than it creates.

    This has been very helpful thank you and keep up the great work!
    I have been trying to figure this out for a while now but I personally am having an issue where after I delete the cache an have my frame I want , it doesn’t appear on screen until the frame number it was originally set at
    an during my animation in render view i can see the cloud of smoke from the frame I want show up but when rendering it will only appear in that single frame it was timed for
    I’m sorry for the trouble but am I missing a step somewhere?

    So you CAN actually keyframe the visibility of the smoke simulations, and all objects, in the viewport. You need to toggle on the "Disable in Viewport" restriction in the Outliner. Just follow the same steps as you did with the render button and it should work.
    I'm not sure what the differences are between "Disable in Viewport" versus "Hide in Viewport" but they are there for a reason.\

    Hi I have a problem, when I leave only one frame of the simulation (lets say fram 40) the smoke/fire is only visible in the render on frame 40, the rest its invisible. In the viewport it shows on all frames but when I render my animation the flame is visible only on frame 40. How can I make it paused and show on all frames of the animation? I cant seem to find the answer anywhere.

      @@randomrimrock so which is the best way! I m getting creazy trying to understand how to start the animation from for example the frame 60 to the frame 150, but bringing the frame 60 to 0

      @@JulesL_82 A solution is to make copies of the chace file and rename them. E.g if you prefered frame is 33, the file will be fluid_data_0033.vdb. Make copies of that and rename them fluid_data_0001.vdb, fluid_data_0002.vdb, fluid_data_0003.vdb etc. It's time consuming, but the result will be perfect.

    I've finally found a video that's similar to what I'm looking for! Though what i wanted to do is to have smoke and fire that only starts at a later time in an animation, so for a 1000 frame animation, ill like to have smoke and fire that starts at frame 800. How would i go about that? Is it similar to this or I have to do something completely different?

    • @BlenderMadeEasy
      @BlenderMadeEasy  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Just set the baking cache to start at 800 and the end to be 1000.

    Nice video. Question..to Freeze the smoke but continue the animation ..could you not just bake the whole smoke simulation with your rotating camera then just go to the .PNG folder and copy and past 50 frames of a .single PNG renaming them the same but ending in 01,02,03,04, etc so they sequence.

    • @BlenderMadeEasy
      @BlenderMadeEasy  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You could do that but I would rather not spend 10 minutes renaming files.
