So frustrated with the VW brand. I can agree this is a sharp car but with a 2.0 at this price point it is a non starter for me. A TDI or V6 would have almost made it worth the price. The fact that there are no more 2dr GTIs, Golf Rs and now the wagon. I will likely look elsewhere.
... handle better, better ride and better MPG. But, they're not as roomy and people prefer the higher position of crossovers. Everything has a trade-off. But, the "death to sedans" isn't so much a statement as much an observation of consumer buying patterns. More and more people are abandoning sedans for crossovers.
The Regal tour X has more cargo room than a Chevy Tahoe with the 3rd row down, and gets twice the MPG. So not all sedans are impractical. The Tahoe’s engine also has bad power density compared to the regal tour X, so it’s not as fun.
I would purchase this in 2 years when the price goes down. I own a 2015 Passat Turbo that I purchased in 2017 with 15k. It has been fantastic on fuel, driving experience and low-cost maintenance.
To me because the Vw turbo 4 cylinders have a carbon buildup and other mechanical issues. The naturally aspirated V6 has lot of power and less issues than the 4 cylinder
Ethan Youngblood it is funny how diametral different the taste in the NA is. Where I live in Europe, I see them everywhere and it looks stunning in person.

PART 1 - POWER: I was out testing many different vehicles - not as a tester but as a customer looking to lease something. Firstly, I do not understand the pre-occupation with HP and 6cyl. today. Where do I need all that power? Light to light racing? Accelerating down the onramp to jam on the brakes to decelerate to an almost-legal highway speed? Passing perhaps? Well, as for the Arteon, I have ordered a 190 HP FWD version and there is plenty of power to overtake on lots of winding country roads and I can drive along at 140 MPH and do just fine and it does not take but a couple of seconds longer to reach that speed than the 270 HP version. Yes, I live in Germany, where you can really use the speed, etc. and drive on windy roads every day outside of the cities. I used significantly less fuel than the big HP version and the extra push of the higher HP is simply not needed. Except, in my opinion, as a prestige thing. And the often attacked "4-banger" is so smooth and quiet - I just don't understand the need, except again as relating to prestige and a cooler sound. I spend quite a bit of time in a car, and smoothness and good handling and extended high speeds (when possible, cuz the roads are crowded) of 110 MPH as well as quick and agile passing on the windy roads are all necessary characteristics for me. And, after having tested the Arteon with more and less HP (and of course other competitors), I am greatly satisfied with the performance of the 170 HP version and can even save some gas and tax money.
Age Of Arteon, almost, but not quite, is it me or does it look good only when its driving? The interior looks much better though imo, love the integrated screen and hey, volume and tuning knobs! Almost laughed at a Luxury sedan with a 4banger, lol, despite it's turbo I still feel a V6 would have been more in line with luxurious, but that's just me, not a fan of the auto start/stop feature either, that being said Lyn makes me want to give it a test drive, I'd be so up for it
So no V6 and turbo lag. Boo! That V6 actually sounded nice as well, I can't wrap my head around a car built to look good but sound mundane in all forms.
PART 2 - FORM: The Arteon is a 4-door sedan hatchback. What a great combination! It looks great, smooth and artful. It seats 4 in great comfort, even relatively tall people. It has quite a lot of cargo space, in fact more than SUVs in the same size category. You can park it easier (remember, I am in Germany and size does matter!). It uses less fuel (and especially in my 170 HP version). It handles well, even on those VERY curvy roads. Why then would you want an SUV unless you are a farmer or need to regularly pull horses to competitions? It does not have to be an Arteon - it could be one of its competitors (well, there are not that many 4-door sedan hatchbacks, but a couple) or even a station wagon (remember those... I am in Europe, so they are all over as one of the top-selling car forms). To me (leaving out the "I am up here in an SUV cool factor), these vehicles just make more sense.
Nice review; you clearly liked the car but for the turbo lag. Yes, marketing should consider color names like "bug guts Yellow." it has a ring to it! Great sense of humor. :)
It needs more power the Kia Stinger has the 3.3L TTV6 with 365hp and the Acura TLX has a 290hp 3.5 L V6 . If they turned up the Golf Rs 292hp turbo 4 to 300+ it would make more sense .
Why oh why today are there so many discussions about power? Are we still punching it from light to light? Or speeding down the onramp to jam on the brakes to decelerate to legal speeds? Oh, I can also rev my car at the light and impress you! Ridiculous talk. My soon-to-be basic 2 Liter no 4WD 190 HP will get me moving just fine on the Autobahn and the acceleration and passing works just fine and yes, I am in Germany, the land of the Autobahn and fast drivers.
You may want to point out that the dashboard is Identical to the European Passat, whereas the rest of the interior features bear a close resemblance. In that sense at least, it IS in fact the replacement for the Passat CC.
There’s just one problem with this nice looking vehicle. It’s made by VW. It’ll be plagued with constant electrical issues, not to mention excess oil consumption, and the companies willingness to address it. We’ve seen it all before with VW.
I’ve been driving new or near new VW’s since 2006, none of them have used oil or had electrical problems ever, in fact they’ve been completely trouble free accept for my V6 CC had a bent tail light bulb holder that a VW tech fixed free of charge when it was out of warranty. Couldn’t recommend VW highly enough
The idea of VW as a name that commands a premium is ridiculous. It has never been a premium brand, and it is never going to be. For $10,000 less, a Hyundai Sonata is just as fetching, roomier, better equipped, rides as well, gets better mileage, and is less that a second slower from 0-60 as a tradeoff. To top it off, the Hyundai Sonata has an excellent chance of breaking 100,000 without any electrical gremlins. The VW, not so much. As a killer value proposition in the large-ish midsize market, the Hyundai has it, hands down. If I wanted to spend $48,000 on a solid midsize performance sedan, I'd get a barely broken-in BMW 5 Series, or, better yet, buy a brand new, nicely optioned Dodge Charger R/T Scat Pack. The VW Arteon, however, is neither a practical or performance value.
