Too many years later, and I still love this pilot. This one and Kitty Bobo were my favorites. I think neither of those won because they were too mature for kids (that's why KND won). It wouldn't be until Regular Show that we had a more mature show on CN.
It's been decades since I've seen this but the idea that the bear escaped getting in trouble was protesting that there was a monkey in his food has stuck with me for over half my life now. Thanks for the upload, and know this show had my vote back then.
I really love this pilot. I feel like the premise of a cartoon where characters living their daily lives while getting into all sorts of hyjinks is a common one, especially when this was made, but this pilot feels so much more lighthearted and fun compared to the shows I've seen. I could easily see myself getting attached to these characters and the world they live in the more I knew about them. Also I love this art style. It has the vibe of a newspaper comic and the color pallet is so nice to look at.
I remember watching this on Cartoon Network as a kid and loved it immediately, made me laugh a lot. It definitely has potential and I can tell it must have inspired “The Regular Show”
It seems I hit like on enough comments that said "Well I'm from Utica" and the algorithm sent me an unexpected gem. I really enjoyed this cartoon. It was clearly lovingly crafted! I love all the little details, like the quiet "boom" in the background after Dan and Micah left their apartment, and the color palette of the paint is very easy on the eyes.
I lived in Utica during college and this perfectly captures the look and feel of Genesee St. Makes me a little nostalgic. I wish we could see more of this, thank you for making it.
I literally can't even put into words how much I adore this cartoon. Everything from the style, humor, music and quirks is just so perfect and tasteful. I want to download this into my frontal lobe
Can’t believe I’m just now seeing this-I love how chill the whole thing is, from the muted colors to the humor and the audio/background music. I definitely would’ve binged the show as a kid if it’d been picked up.
I remember voting for this! My sis and I taped this when it originally aired on big pick weekend...and I still have the vhs :) I was nine at the time and the tape is labeled "The Hot-Dog Eating Bear" hahah. I wonder if JG Quintel saw this pilot...
This is proof tv executives don’t know what shows to green light. I hadn’t ever heard of this bc I was months old when it came out but I would have loved this growing up and even as an adult I love it. the style is awesome and the humor is just as charming. 10/10 should’ve been a show
I remember seeing the pilot as a kid but couldn't remember the title so i just searched "bear" and "hot dogs" and infound it! Such a gem in my history wish it was picked up!
You should definitely re-pitch this for a streaming service. I bet people would love it- there's a huge amount of support in this comment section alone!
I love that the sound track sounds like it could have been done by grand buffet but the humor is what gets me. Them running to Canada at the end lmfao 11/10
To me this was by far one of the best pilot cartoons to be featured on cartoon network, it definitely should've won! Had a series been made out of it, it'd surely be ace and a favourite of mine! After so many years from first having seen it, it still remains one of my favourite cartoon pieces! Thank you for sharing it! And bravo! :))
I voted for this neat cartoon and I was hoping it would become a series. Those 4 animals remind me of Seinfeld and his group, getting into crazy situations like that.
this is a really great cartoon. the sense of humor almost feels like weird gen z memes despite coming out in 2001. ahead of its time i'd say. the art reminds me a fair bit of J. Otto Seibold's lol. i thought it might have been a pilot made by him for a moment.
I remember watching this pilot once when it was on over 10 years ago. For some reason, the end credits song of this show has stuck with me all these years. After doing some google searching of pilots that competed against Kids Next Door, I've finally found it. Amazing feeling.
I was hoping when they were talking about food, that they would go get some "steamed hams". That's what they call hamburgers in Upstate New York. It's a regional dialect.
I don't know if it's watercolors (looks like it?) but the way this is drawn and colored, the lines not being perfectly straight, the way the walls might have lighter and darker tones, just brings so much personality to every frame. A degree of earnestness that I don't think comes through in other animations that go for a Perfect, Neat and Tidy style. From the other comments it seems like this never got picked up to be a full show, but I hope you have found a successful career, finding pieces of art like this makes me want to jump for joy, and I'm really glad that artists like this exist
Aw, thanks! It's nice to hear that the extra work is appreciated. If you want to see some of my more recent stuff, I've been making comics at deepdarkfears.com
you have no idea how in love with this universe i am. the dialogue, the characters and their flowy dynamics, the art style especially!!! one of a kind!
@@glittergelpenlyrics Thanks! We're so glad that you enjoyed this cartoon. We made this when hand-drawn commercial animation was going extinct, so it was nice to be able to make a cartoon in this style while we still could.
This is one of the pilot/shorts I missed out on (probably because I was 3 yrs old at the time lol), but I feel like I would have LOVED a whole show of this around my teen years. I know I for sure love this pilot as an adult, funny stuff.
I saw this on TV at probably 2 or the 3 in the morning with a friend of mine like 6 years ago, and neither of us knew what it was, but we quoted it all the damn time. I am so glad I finally found it again. 2:20 was hilarious, by the way.
I love this pilot sooo much. I wish it could have become something more. The character design is simple but fantastic, the backgrounds and colors are so nice to look at, and something about that intro just really hits you. I wasn’t alive when this came out but if I was it would have had my vote to become a full show!
I love this so much! Another fragment of my memory has been restored. I wished all the cartoon pilots could have been turned into a series. That would have been the best childhood! Thanks for the memories!❤
This is one heeeeck of a cartoon. It should be a case study for what to do in cartoons. Amazing sense of movement and timing. Such an innocent, sincere cartoon, an awesome kind of humor that's rare these days.
Been too long since I've seen Utica Cartoon... and it's still the same level of silly off-beat semi-slice-o-life I recall... goes to show some cartoons CAN have a long shelf life. I'm glad I found this, again.
i’ve lived in upstate new york my whole life and this perfectly encapsulates the feeling off small town loneliness and having nothing to do but the same thing you’ve already done a thousand times
It's been over 20 years since I saw this, and I've had that image of the $17 bill with a racecar on it in my head since then. Thanks to reddit I was able to unlock this childhood memory and I'm so happy it's this damn good!

I love how at 0:55 you can hear the apartment explode in the distance once they leave 😭😭😭
But how when they come back it’s fine even though they exploded the apartment and died
I remember loving this pilot as a kid and it still makes me laugh 15 years later. I can't believe it wasn't picked up.
Thanks, Jared. I had a lot of fun making this one!
This one should’ve won
Voice actors couldve been better, defo wouldve won
Probably because the bomb joke around 911 sadly. And it was so ahead of its time!

Could have pitch it to Adult Swim at the time since they were just getting started
REGULAR SHOW is pretty much just REN & STIMPY but for stoners.
I could honestly see both working as Adult Swim cartoons without having to change that much.

“Mechanically unseparated monkeys” would be a great band name.
5:29 - 5:51 was always my favorite part, I especially love that casual line, "I thought hot dog parasites had eaten you from the inside out."
That scream 😂
for a 15 year old cartoon, this is severely underrated. great video
It's actually twenty-two. So old!
...Ah, yes, the dark ages of the year... 2001.
