I love the scene at 4:50- 5:00 so much. It's such a perfect reprise of the boat backing up in the begining; showing of how the shadow creatures have grown enough thanks to the very trash that got thrown in the ocean to take on such large surface prey.
@@chaosruby9792 I would imagine the shadow creatures usually get their food from already deceased things that fall into their territory. It's just that the advent of Donks has allowed them to actually reach up and drag something already alive down to their level.
Also someone has said this before but I love how so much of Felix's art revolves around ecosystem dynamics. He teaches you so much about these ecosystems in such a small amount of time

As a sfx nerd I can admit Felix is a GENIUS of an artist in this area, he manages to create an ABSURDLY tension within so few seconds, that’s absurdly incredible
I absolutely adore how the beeping of the boat backing up slowly transitions into beautiful chords of music as the camera pans through the polluted ocean. Such raw artistic value!
Felix Colgrave is like a clown in a bathtub being pulled upstream by geese on leashes. You might not be able to understand the madness behind it, but holy FUCK is it interesting to watch!
every time i see a felix colgrave work, i go "okay mr colgrave, show me some of the most creative fever dream type shit I've ever seen" and he never disappoints. it always somehow makes sense too, it's crazy
4:50 I don’t think I’ve ever heard anything as cool as a mechanical in-universe sound (namely, the Submawhale reversing, making beeping like it was a pickup truck) so quickly becoming an out-of-universe forboding musical tone warning of danger. They’re both warning tones with insanely different weight and fear. It’d be like if a horror movie somehow made the squeaking of the rickety basement stairs and the violin sting of the monster appearing based on the same sound. That’s crazy effective.
I absolutely LOVE the recurring theme of predator and prey in all of Felix’s animations. The ending of this video reminds me so much of timelapse videos where bottom feeders feast on a whale carcass that has sunk to the ocean floor. BRILLIANT
Felix can always tell a story with absolutely zero dialogue. It’s all brilliant sounds design and music paired with visuals that look exactly like they sound. I love how each of the sea creatures would be these big amalgamate donks before falling over and losing their pieces.
What makes it greater is that in 4:30 you can tell that the ones that are struggling to move are the singer, the mushroom & the shell after breaking into pieces
I particularly really enjoyed how the donks were constantly pulling each other apart to get other parts but ended up creating entirely new creatures in the process. Phenomenal stuff as always, Mr. Colgrave!
The ability to create tension and suspense even though I have no idea whats going on is a fascinating skill which I see Felix consistently demonstrate.
This could actually be the basis for a pretty good video game, sort of like Spore. You add bit, remove bits, replace bits, sometimes the bits you loose have free will, eventually you fight monsters that used to be part of you etc.
2:43 is actually such an addictive sound, and the entire thing is so smooth and yet so random and by the end you’re met with such a horrific sort of fate I can’t stop watching
I know exactly how you feel dude, it reminds me of staying up late and watching those little snippets of old cartoons on Boomerang, or at the very least Watching the little animations that come on Adult Swim before airing a show.
Always loved the idea of mix n match monsters. Having a whole species dedicated to scrounging around in trashed limbs and parts to make goofy abominations is a great idea! And them making the music as they interact and walk is a really nice touch!
There's a charm to Felix Colgrave animations that no other person or studio has ever matched. The surrealness plus the cartoony themes are such a treat for the eyes. Immensely glad to see your animations back again!
Well I trust your opinion immensely, random person I see commenting everywhere, so I will assume it was a good choice to stay up past midnight for this, at least until I can actually watch it myself and decide. Edit: So worth it.
After a few watches, it seems like the whole idea of the animation is that these creatures who once never had a voice, nor even a visible body, were actually given the chance to take on personalities of their own through these mounds of plastic, and by the end, are actually able to reach for bigger prey as well. Really cool idea that was executed perfectly, as always. Super enjoyable to watch!
I think it's just an outlet for felix to process the absurdity of prey-predator relationship: here we are in this globular object suspended in space, we dismantle each other and incorporate each others parts in our own bodies to grow and sustain ourselves. if you look into his other work, you can see this motif of predation everywhere.
@@bahayesilyurt9433 I agree. I saw some critique of so-called late stage capitalism as well. The two who start facing off with an attitude of "it's you or me", piling hoards of material on their backs with no regard for the intended purpose of the pieces, then charging at each other while a crowd cheers them on as though it were a gladiatorial event. Also, these two creatures reassemble into one towering being with the legs twisting into a double helix implying natural selection; the creature reaching down and manually separating the strands seemed to imply that the direction things take is very much a conscious decision. In spite of all the destruction and horror the survival of the fittest approach has caused, the pig-nosed colossus seems to sing it's own praises to roaring approval. Moments later, everything is observed to be in ruin. Given that they're all constructed of useless plastic waste at the bottom of the ocean, I get the impression this is criticizing the assertion that the "free market" is a living thing that will ultimately make the best decisions and that governmental interference causes more problems than it solves. The recuperation of critical observation at the end was a nice touch.
My guess is that the Donks, being mostly formless creatures that live at the bottom of the ocean, need to make bodies to inhabit. They would probably use stuff like shells and bones normally, but the waste produced by the society living on ground provides something better; trash that is thrown away into the ocean by the tons. The Donks are infinitely creative and can use the trash to make any kind of body they please, allowing each of them to be unique. However, they fight over materials because they all want the best stuff and can't seem to settle on any one form, and are even willing to strip a dead submerwhale (what I'm calling the submerine creature) to its bones of its metal. However, they are also able to work together to make something even better than what they can alone, by combining their resources and creativity. When one seems to be having trouble picking out just the right face and sings about it's plight, other Donks gather materials and help it build a towering form that amazes everyone else. It's expression doesn't change, but it's singing and enthusiastic clapping indicates it's quite happy with the results. The Donks themselves, which are the amorphic black creatures with glowing eyes, are weirdly cute in their own strange, eldritch kind of way. Though the submerwhale didn't seem to agree!
Hmmm I personally disagree with the final thoughts - I really think the guy at 4:08 is really in discomfort, that's what the imagery and music feels to me at least (the screams in agony and the fact that his expression is sad and the spikes on its head are constantly hurting him). I think he was the only one to be kind of fed up with everything at 3:20 and he ended up being merged with all the other stuff against his will. For me the two creatures at 3:36 represent two big businesses / networks, like Facebook and Instagram, that end up being bought and merged (like when Facebook bought Instagram) and end up creating the giant creature at 4:01, which is a representation of capitalism itself (its feet are the ones of the two previous creatures!). The appearance of the outsider submarine is to me the idea of alternative ideas that don't want to be part of this extreme capitalistic consumerism, but that eventually even they end up being trapped and consumed by capitalism itself - this is a very negative view, like there's no way to avoid and or escape it :/ I'm not trying to generalise 'capitalism' as capitalism = bad, but I really think this specific type of capitalism (the post-capitalism, extreme consumerism one) is not good for us. Even the giant creature looks like a DNA, like it's telling us it's part of us now. What are your thoughts?
I’m not so old that I don’t remember watching his earlier animations as a kid. I have simply kept following along. I hope more people are exposed to this art as time continues.

I love how the people who caused the problem scoff at it, and then when it finally effects them that's when they start caring about what is going on. The fish eating a corpse timelapse was a great touch as well.
The ending scene actually occurd irl, it's a whale fall, and happens when a whale corpse sinks to the bottom of the sea to be picked clean by bottom feeders and such (also bone worms)
If I'm not mistaken, this is Felix's first video that is more or less fully 3D. It's awesome how you were able to keep your distinct style despite changing mediums! Looks (and sounds) incredible as always!
@@kumobscura3994 Uhh, yeah? It isn't easy to make 3d look like 2d, but it is easy to make it look good by making it look 2d as opposed to other methods.
I LOVE how at 5:03, you can see Donks from the beginning section of the video. Five distinct Donks are visible: The brown dog Donk at the far left, the extending crab Donk at the middle left, the crocodile brick Donk at the middle, the party hat Donk at the middle right, and the mushroom pig Donk at the far right. (I guess the Party hat Donk and the Mushroom pig went back to their original states)
All of Felix' animations have this energy thats similar to an old pixar short. When there was no pressure to be marketable, and the purpose of the animation was to explore how much they could accomplish with the medium. Everything he creates feels like an audiovisual playground
Comparing Colegrove’s work to an “audiovisual playground” is one the best description I’ve seen, to be honest. Second only to “an equalized hodgepodge of creativity and weirdness”.
remember kids, don't overuse your character creator otherwise all the extra parts will pollute the ocean and drift below the Marianna trench to be possessed by bottom feeders
At 5:10 you can see the submarine's eye move around frantically for a second and then fade to grey and become motionless. We are watching the life literally drain from its eyes
each moment goes by so smoothly that one can forget how meticulously animated and choreographed everything is. not a single moment overstayed its welcome. an absolute treat and an instant classic. thank you Felix
I just made a comment about this and was looking to see if anyone else had noticed. I love that it's not only the beeping, but the, for lack of a better tone, bubbly notes are mirrored too, with the second half being faster to create a panicked feeling as opposed to the first half's slow, calm sound
This truly shows the beauty and horror of character creation; so many combinations, but the ones we like are far and few between. The rest go to a place where they're left with the bits and bobs no one wants but they cling to the idea of existence like an oil stain in the ocean, pulling anything that can be into their clutches, even if only for a taste of identity. Beautifully tragic.
I live for these short films, they always give me something new to think about, and inspire me in some new creative way! Thank you, Felix, for making these!
something i don't see a lot of people talk about is the fact that the scene makes it look like timelapse, so the whalemarine was stuck there being consumed by an endless mass of object for what must've been a day to how fast those guys were moving compared to previous scenes, and only dying by the time they've bitten down to the bone is just nightmare fuel
3:22 haunts me. It feels like the moment you see an infant begin attempting to formulate and speak words it has no idea what they mean or how to say them. It's like watching the inanimate become truly animated. A consciousness rising from the machine to rely that is aware and that it is alive. It's beautiful. It's a sorrow cry. It's art.
And the scene after where rhe two creatures enter stage and steal the show forming an amalgamation of all three including the one singing with it at the head fully aware and now in a plea seeming screaming a siren as if hurt. This scene makes me go wild it's amazing.
The interesting thing is, the submarine (or the people controlling it) was disgusted by something he himself created. Humans created the useless plastic and decided to mindlessly dump it into the ocean, but then tried to distance themselves from the destruction they created, until nature, playing by it's own rules, got revenge
Okay. Wow. This is just absolutely brilliant. The leftover character selection elements becoming sentient and almost like microscopic organisms, the battle for the resources, the dark creatures' curiosity with the contrast of the colorful bits and bobs, the playful horror of the combinations as if they are mutants or abominations, the musical and rhythmic sounds that correspond their movement calls to mind retro cartoons, the violence with which the submarine is eaten down to the bones in a nature documentary-esque sequence...this is just so incredible.
The amount of time and dedication this must have taken to make is immense. I swear Felix’s channel must be one of the highest quality channels on this platform. Keep up the good work my friend!
I feel like the inspiration for this could've been not only the box of random objects Felix's kid has, but also all the cartoony, goofy sound effects that might accompany them if they were able to move.
I keep rewatching the scene at 4:51 and trying to figure out how in the WORLD Felix made these things a million times more terrifying in an instant. The way the sound of the submarine backing up calls back to the establishing shot at the beginning of the scene and then twists it into something so MENACING!! Genuine shivers
I feel like for me it's the fact that none of the Donk creatures are acting as systems anymore, each individual piece is just devouring the whalemarine as fast as possible. The short depicts them as being very prideful and competitive (mushroom vs snail), but when actual food is available, it all goes by the wayside.
It might be the lower framerate and decreased inbetweens of the critters. It either brings up the connection to maggots sped up or the quick jolts of spider legs
Imagine doing your job as an.. alive submarine? And going to that place to check it out, cuz you were told to or so. And then, boom, something grabs your eye and pulls you down. Next thing you know, you feel solid, plastic and/or rubber toys entering your insides and eating you alive while you suffer in agony, screaming just for nothing. ..Just sit there and think about it for a moment. How would it feel if millions of toys tore your skin apart to enter your insides, to eat you from there? I don't wanna think about it anymore.
Oh my goodness. The music, the art, the concept, the whalefall. This is so gorgeous and I hope he's proud of this. Makes me wanna start animating again
I love how the backing up sound of the boat here 0:35, gets turned into a cool mysterious harmonization that leads into the song as we descend into the depths. And not only that, later at 4:50, the same technique is used for the submarine backing up, which leads into the disturbing theme that plays as it's torn to shreds!
I knew these animations could get eccentric, but I didn't think it'd be Cyriak-levels of confusion alongside Felix's storytelling. I like that I don't mentally know what to say other than that.
i mean, i guess. lol. Felix makes controlled chaos that looks unintelligible but actually has an underlying message, usually more than one. Cyriak just makes fuckin off the wall absurd animations with no real purpose. they use totally different animation styles, too. theyre both british, though. so theres that.
The audio on this film is SUPERB. It's so rhythmic and colorful, and fits with the animation in every seconds. Of course the animation was awesome too, but I think it really deserves more attention.
Felix’s cartoons always give the feelings of being somehow meaningful, yet with the perfect mix of “what the heck am I watching?” They just feel… somehow important and relevant to modern problems. Anyone else?
This cartoon, specifically, feels like it could be presenting the modern issues of the worlds polluted oceans, and how bad it can turn out. Or previous cartoons like Double King, with an evident “don’t be greedy” lesson to be taught; and Throat Notes, with the parallel of plagiarism, stealing one’s voice for another’s own gain.
It's near impossible to adequately describe any of his videos without sounding pretentious. It's art on a very human yet inhuman level? It's a walking vibe check
he says in the description that it's "an exploration of ocean plastic, avatars and adaptive bottom feeders" so no it's not that they're "somehow important" he created it with the intention of you interpreting it as important
Personally I believe it could be about the struggle of an artist/musician/creative. It is up to them to explore and represent themselves through the use of objects and sounds throughout the darkness, and to stick whatever together and make whatever works. sometimes the end result of these struggles can be competition over who has control over what sort of technique/artstyle. each one of those donks represent a way to express ones self, each one producing a unique sound and rhythm structure, some being more communicative than others. The small one who finds a way to sing is able to find a way to express themselves through art only through trial and error. And even then in then end its voice is only taken from it to be used in the bigger angry monster. The submarine at the beginning and the mass production of different combinations of donks could also represent how art and music have been oversaturated by industries in order to find the "optimal" combination or arrangement. Even how the submarine regards the struggles of the bottom feeders with disgust only to be overtaken and consumed by the larger community. idk tho shit wild
this toon is about the general idea of bottom up organization we see how excesses of the upper world are dumped unto lower world where dark spirits make use of the excess to create extremely chaotic diverse forms of existence each fighting experimenting and organizing with each other endlessly. Then we see the upper world creature stumbling upon on all of this being disgusted and ultimately underestimating the power that these creatures can attain despite being made out of garbage great example of this is internet. Excesses of media industry of the past few decades is dumped onto the internet and now dark anonymous spirits that inhibit various forums and blogs use it to create increasingly more elaborate psychotic and chaotic memes all forming various subgroups communities rivalries and then lets say miyazaki decides to look up naucassia on japanese forums he is naturally disgusted by all this and says "Anime was a mistake" but now this quote itself and he himself became a meme he was consumed @raygun1337 also has a good intuition on this but im talking about this in a more general sense. This process shown to us in this cartoon actually happens all the time infact it encompasses whole scientific feilds of research termed variously as "Complex system research" "Cybernetics" "Non linear systems" and so on. Origin of life is also an example of this excessive energy of the suns and earths molten core dumped unto waters of earth caused diverse molecules in water to eventually form life. This is currently (and has been for the past 70 years) a hot topic in science and philosophy and arts so yes it is "important" felix is not even being subtle about this in any way.
Felix is one of those of the new gen of animators who picks up the the psychedelic crumbs left by Gilbert Shelton and Rick Griffin et al and atom smashes them into new digital talismans. Speechless. Again.
This is a great animation. I love how it started from just a simple character creation and trashed parts being dumped into a abyss at the bottom of the lake, to black monsters that gave life to surreal object creatures born from the parts. Nice work.

BRILLIANT
I was thinking the exact same thing!!
It seems a big thing for Felix to create his own ecosystems- the relationship between predator and prey being a big part of that
Yeh, that has a term it's called "whalefall" basically it creates an ecosystem every single time a whale dies.
When I saw that scene all I could hear was the gmod ragedoll physics sounds
Ah, so that's where the parts I threw off screen in spore creature creator disappeared to... Never even thought about it.

Ok forget about the "We gotta get spongebob back" video, THIS is what every dream feels like
After a few watches, it seems like the whole idea of the animation is that these creatures who once never had a voice, nor even a visible body, were actually given the chance to take on personalities of their own through these mounds of plastic, and by the end, are actually able to reach for bigger prey as well.
I felt like it was just kind of a hermit crab thing
A lot of cyclic predation, yes
It's an ecology thing. Or at least inspired by what's going on right now. Let's just appreciate it for the art, why need to have meaning or moral.
That's a good one!
Which is probably how they made the giant guy at 4:08.
lovely interpretation!
The appearance of the outsider submarine is to me the idea of alternative ideas that don't want to be part of this extreme capitalistic consumerism, but that eventually even they end up being trapped and consumed by capitalism itself - this is a very negative view, like there's no way to avoid and or escape it :/
I'm not trying to generalise 'capitalism' as capitalism = bad, but I really think this specific type of capitalism (the post-capitalism, extreme consumerism one) is not good for us. Even the giant creature looks like a DNA, like it's telling us it's part of us now.
What are your thoughts?

It's a walking vibe check
he says in the description that it's "an exploration of ocean plastic, avatars and adaptive bottom feeders"
so no it's not that they're "somehow important" he created it with the intention of you interpreting it as important
Then we see the upper world creature stumbling upon on all of this being disgusted and ultimately underestimating the power that these creatures can attain despite being made out of garbage
great example of this is internet. Excesses of media industry of the past few decades is dumped onto the internet and now dark anonymous spirits that inhibit various forums and blogs use it to create increasingly more elaborate psychotic and chaotic memes all forming various subgroups communities rivalries and then lets say miyazaki decides to look up naucassia on japanese forums he is naturally disgusted by all this and says "Anime was a mistake" but now this quote itself and he himself became a meme he was consumed
@raygun1337 also has a good intuition on this but im talking about this in a more general sense.
