This pilot has a lot of charming elements, but I understand why it wouldn’t have been picked up for a series. As a pilot, this is our first introduction to these characters and their world. From this, our introduction to Kitty Bobo is that he’s a pretentious wannabe who cares more about looking cool than being with his friends. If anything, he almost comes off as the villain when he’s supposed to be the main character. When Kitty Bobo’s friends show him up at the end, it feels deserved. If Kitty Bobo was going to be the main character of this show, I think that this pilot should have focused more on showing who he is and his regular interactions with his friends and world.
probably if this was picked, the protagonist would have slowly learned to Mature, it seems like a show that would have leaned on character development slowly
@sneakyboy4828 Well I think kitty bobo could still work as a protagonist since this kind of “unlikable protagonist/side character” has been done in the past before with good success like with kuzco , Greg heffly, Ahsoka tano, Eric cartman, or Riley from the boondocks who i think is the best example since he acts so much like Kitty Bobo. Even if people ended up hating him, I feel like the show would’ve had kitty bobo go through a character arc where he learns to be a better person over time, quits his bragging nature and appreciates his friends more. Also I feel like those details that u wanted the pilot to show were saved for later in the event that it becomes a show, something that sadly never happened.
i feel like this could’ve went in the direction scott pilgrim did. unlikable protagonist going through character development to become a decent person. i prefer stories like that more than good person becomes even better
I think it's less due to KB being an annoying dork (some of the most popular characters are) and more because the writing is so sparse. It feels like it could be the b-plot of a more interesting story. Still, Dante Basco's scream is legendary, and the transition in 3:08 is really lush.
@@blizzardblast101 You mean with parents using phones and tablets to have their kids distracted while they goof off and drink beer or wine? Yeah, pretty much.
Not a prediction of the future but a criticism of the present (in this show the early 00s). People were still complaining about kids being addicted to their brick phones in the 90s
If Kids Next Door was really picked over this show, then I'm not exactly upset but this show had potential and I love the artstyle. but the creator of Kitty Bobo is trying to make a new pilot called Chloe and the Stars. I don't know if it's still up but I highly suggest people support it.
Such a shame this wasn’t green-lighted. 3 seconds in and I was already in love with the art style and characters. It’s so funny how Bobo has dogs for parents, it makes a fun dynamic! Maybe one day somebody will revamp this.
Dang, I was 6 when this came out. Now I'm turning 21 and I can relate to these characters. There aren't that many shows that have actually "cool" characters. Other shows just try waaay too hard. Something about their interactions seem so honest and realistic. I really like that about this pilot. The interactions seem so genuine.
Roxlyn166 dude. same. I wish someone could pick up this show. the interaction with the characters look so fucking natural and well executed. also. Maggie is a nice waifu
Yeah, I was too young to know what was going on at that time. I also don't vividly remember the pilot airing. What a shame, I would've voted for this. I watched this for the first time several years ago, and I always come back to it.
Kitty Bobo (2001) Welcome to Eltingville (2002) What do these two have in COMMON? #1 ... Cancelled #2. ... amazing, fresh, art style. #3.... really good humor and characters. #4 .. AMAZING voice actors. #5. - THEY WOULD HAVE BEEN LOVED.
What I think this pilot need was more character development, I mean The episode was just Bobo acting like a big shot with his phone, It's not bad but could use more of a polish. (But got to admit the girl cat was cute)
Spot on what I was thinking. The visuals of the show though are fantastic and would love to see this explored more even though they did show a quite a few places in this alone. It's a shame it didn't get picked up but from what we got out of it it wasn't bad.
For the past 7 or so years I’ve made sure to watch this short every year on my birthday. It’s easily my favorite cartoon pilot of all time and never fails to make me smile no matter what so I always save it for a special day, once a year. I love it that much! Adult Swim (it was new at the time iirc) should have picked this show up as-is because it would have been great competition for the other urban slice-of-life cartoons at the time. I still (foolishly) dream that it’ll become an indie web series or cute lil webtoon someday because it would still work today.
Would have loved to see how this show looked like if it was picked up. Although if Kitty Bobo was picked up today, the show would be modernised. Everything about this pilot screams 90s/2000s and I love it for that so taking that rough, urban, 90s/2000s feel away would ruin it imo. I'm just happy that someone recorded the pilot because things like this can become lost very easily. It would be cool if Cartoon Network did a pilot marathon of old pilots to see if the audience now are interested in any of them.
Now this is a distant memory I thought I'd never see again. It was during a very rough time in my life and I only vaguely remember this airing along with a promo for it. Such an obscure pilot for what could have been.
Fr though, it's always so nice when a character with a really soft and "normal" sounding voice is in a cartoon like this. It's so out of place it's actually endearing.
I remember when this aired going up against KND. Looking back at it now I realized that this was ahead of it's time. This could definitely be a show today on CN.
I remember enjoying this and wanting it to become a series. I was also inspired by the unique choices in the art style & the cut outs in the end credits. It’s so cool to finally find this.
Oh man this show just screams Parappa minus the rapping and the protagonist being a Cat. The art style alone is worth a series but the dorky "cool" characters just burn with style. Why didn't this Win! *Sob* *Sob*
This show is so amazing!!! How haven't I seen this till now??? The animation and the style is so charming!!! I hope they can pick this show up again and give it the chance it desrves.
I fell in love with this pilot. Thanks to the recommendations recommending this to me. I really wish Kitty Bobo had a chance to be a show it's so familiar to regular show.
I love how this is such a short little pilot but so many have remembered it to this day. like it's vibe and design have stuck in peoples minds so well! I personally remember calling the voting number and picking this along with knd too! I would've loved this because when I was a kid, I dreamed of that city life, living in a loft, having a cool group of friends.
This cartoon was really ahead of the curve in it's storytelling. I feel like if it was pitched around 2010 it would've been accepted, as it rightfully should've been.
Didn't know Zuko/Jake Long did voice acting this early. Also like how it subtley did a "don't text and drive/bike" before cell phones were super common and we were having a huge spike in car accidents involving cell phones.
I loved the concept for "The Summoning" from Cartoon Hangover and "A kitty bobo show" from Cartoon Network, they're both such cute concepts and Kitty bobo is SO of it's time with such a unique charming art style
You wanna know something I find interesting? A Kitty Bobo Show is pretty much just an earlier attempt at a show like The Amazing World of Gumball, and the similarities are pretty striking. Both are described as “artsy and abstract” both have a main male cat protagonist wanting to prove his popularity and worth to the world, both have a caring best friend that often helps the protagonist to achieve his goals, both protagonists have a kind and down to Earth girlfriend, both at one point had the characters changed to 12 years old, (The quick revised version of the second pitch presented to Disney in 2005 changed Kitty Bobo to 12 years old) the very first early concept of Gumball from 2007 (Before the pilot, the one where he has yellow eyes, black fur, and a beanie) *also* heavily reminds me of Kitty Bobo’s caricature style, and they even took the whole adoption idea but reversed it. (Gumball’s parents adopted Darwin, *duh)* Not to mention that both the Kitty Bobo pilot and first Gumball episode coincidentally happened almost exactly 10 years apart. There’s probably a lot more than that, but you get the picture. It’s actually pretty crazy to see that such an iconic and world renowned show on the level of SpongeBob might have taken a *lot* of callbacks to a pitch that just barely lost in a contest that was by then already considered to be obscure, so in a way, it now lives on, and despite all odds with Catroon Network trying to ignore it in favor for more inferior shows after 2009 (In my opinion) like Adventure Time and Teen Titans GO!, (Yeah I disliked Adventure Time, not a popular opinion I bet) it has still persisted to reach all the way to the top, with more still to come for many years like a movie and sequel series/more seasons, possibly eventually even at the intended young teen or early adult age, bringing it all full circle. On top of that, without a show like Gumball, we wouldn’t have more experimental shows going to Cartoon Network’a roots either with stuff like Mao Mao and Infinity Train, the latter of which is basically just Adventure Time done way better. (Again, just an opinion, there’s nothing wrong with thinking differently) I have now gained even *more* mad respects for them than I already have. R.I.P. Kitty Bobo, your sacrifice will not be forgotten.
The paralelles you draw between the two cartoons are very general and could be applied to alot of other shows. I see very little similarity between the two and you definitely have confirmation bias. I liked reading the later paragraphs. Very intressting opinions. Hmm, yes. I hope you sleep tight tonight.
Dante Basco really brought his distinct V.O. workgame thanks to this pilot but alas, this show was relatively premature in presentation. At least we got him to do Zuko and Jake Long in the long run.
I'd honestly be interested to see a world where this became a full show. I can see why it never did, it's very different than what was out at the time so I can see execs not being interested in it. But personally I'm pretty into it. It has a good style, decent writing, and overall a nice vibe to it. It is unfortunate that it wouldn't be able to come out today. I think it matches perfectly with cartoons of the time, but if it were to come out today, it would need major changes to get executives interested. And if they did that, a huge part of it's charm might be lost. If this miraculously made it to a full series today, even outside of CN studios, I'd hands down watch it. Even if it's like an indie series online. A cartoon with young adult characters in 2001 that still is kid friendly is weirdly up my alley. I think the demographics being either "kid" or "adult" is very limiting as a consumer. I want that in-between where characters aren't fighting over existential dread of their early 30s, and they aren't literal children who have never been in a 7-eleven in their lives. I want 18-23 year old characters (give or take) who are young enough to explore the world at their leisure, but have to still be responsible adults. I also don't want to have "drugs sex and alcohol the show" because realistically, not everyone acts like this. I think this pilot captures exactly what I want pretty well. Kitty Bobo good.
The art style and the character design is amazing! I remember seeing the trailer for this, but I never got to watch the full episode. Wish it would have turned into a full series.
Everything about this is amazing. I especially love the designs and the artstyle. This is another example of why anthropomorphic characters are a great choice for cartoon characters

That’s the point, he’s a pretentious douche you love to hate
probably if this was picked, the protagonist would have slowly learned to Mature, it seems like a show that would have leaned on character development slowly
This animation is such an incredible time capsule there’s no way writers can make something like this today

I would have probably watched the crap out of this show if it had become one.
Have you tried Mission Hill? It's somewhat similar except more adult.

This show Actually does look Refreshing, its more like the amazing world of Gumball But Regular show style
This show was like, 15 years too early. It's a shame. In the modern CN climate, this would've done great.
Just realized that the voice of Prince Zuko and Jake Long was Kitty. Took a bit to hear but there was no mistaking that voice.
Dude thanks you!!! The entire time I watched this I was trying to remember where I heard that voice before!!
RUFIOOOO
21 years later and we’re STILL hooked onto our phones. Nothings changed. This show actually predicted the future. 😆

If anything it's gotten significantly worse.
@@blizzardblast101 You mean with parents using phones and tablets to have their kids distracted while they goof off and drink beer or wine? Yeah, pretty much.
they could make an episode on that@@ejm1225
Not a prediction of the future but a criticism of the present (in this show the early 00s). People were still complaining about kids being addicted to their brick phones in the 90s
I remember when cell phones came out. It was just amazing to be able to talk to anyone, anytime.
If Kids Next Door was really picked over this show, then I'm not exactly upset but this show had potential and I love the artstyle. but the creator of Kitty Bobo is trying to make a new pilot called Chloe and the Stars. I don't know if it's still up but I highly suggest people support it.
Susana Almeida knd was 1st and kitty boba was 2nd

Such a shame this wasn’t green-lighted. 3 seconds in and I was already in love with the art style and characters. It’s so funny how Bobo has dogs for parents, it makes a fun dynamic! Maybe one day somebody will revamp this.
Bobo was adopted.
I need this, and I wish this actually got a show. I would of seriously loved it as a kid. Definitely gives off teen vibes.
Yes^
Roxlyn166 dude. same. I wish someone could pick up this show. the interaction with the characters look so fucking natural and well executed. also. Maggie is a nice waifu
it's funny cuz I'm also turning 21 this year and I don't remember watching this and I'm sure I would've tried to vote for this and knd
Yeah, I was too young to know what was going on at that time. I also don't vividly remember the pilot airing. What a shame, I would've voted for this. I watched this for the first time several years ago, and I always come back to it.

What I think this pilot need was more character development, I mean The episode was just Bobo acting like a big shot with his phone, It's not bad but could use more of a polish.
(But got to admit the girl cat was cute)
You think Bobo and her might be dating?
Spot on what I was thinking. The visuals of the show though are fantastic and would love to see this explored more even though they did show a quite a few places in this alone.
It's a shame it didn't get picked up but from what we got out of it it wasn't bad.

reminds me of how normal things were before I was born xD
@@shrippie-4214 Wonder what ya mean by normal.
Aaaand it’s my birthday today so I’m back :D
Would have loved to see how this show looked like if it was picked up. Although if Kitty Bobo was picked up today, the show would be modernised. Everything about this pilot screams 90s/2000s and I love it for that so taking that rough, urban, 90s/2000s feel away would ruin it imo. I'm just happy that someone recorded the pilot because things like this can become lost very easily.
It would be cool if Cartoon Network did a pilot marathon of old pilots to see if the audience now are interested in any of them.
After all these years, I still think this should have been a show. A lot potential wasted.
***** cartoon network would probably be different today tbh lol
I love the idea of this show
And I hate that dumpster Fire idea
I never knew about this show, but I really love the art style
Now this is a distant memory I thought I'd never see again. It was during a very rough time in my life and I only vaguely remember this airing along with a promo for it. Such an obscure pilot for what could have been.
Man this would have fit perfectly on Adult Swim. This pilot is a time capsule of its era.
My god this dog guy is so adorable his voice is so sweet
Fr though, it's always so nice when a character with a really soft and "normal" sounding voice is in a cartoon like this. It's so out of place it's actually endearing.

I would've loved this because when I was a kid, I dreamed of that city life, living in a loft, having a cool group of friends.
God, this is how far back my memories go. I have this show stuck at the back of my head ever since I was toddler
You can tell the cartoon is from the early 2000s when having a cellphone is seen as a luxury.
if this became a full show i guarantee it wouldve changed my life
I really dig the art style this uses.
There’s something about the end credits and it’s theme that’s very hypnotic. Love it.
It’s an amazing instrumental
This cartoon was really ahead of the curve in it's storytelling. I feel like if it was pitched around 2010 it would've been accepted, as it rightfully should've been.
Didn't know Zuko/Jake Long did voice acting this early. Also like how it subtley did a "don't text and drive/bike" before cell phones were super common and we were having a huge spike in car accidents involving cell phones.
Kitty Bobo should have challenged Graffiti to an Agni-Kai.
I loved the concept for "The Summoning" from Cartoon Hangover and "A kitty bobo show" from Cartoon Network, they're both such cute concepts and Kitty bobo is SO of it's time with such a unique charming art style
I'm watching this on my cell phone.

(Again, just an opinion, there’s nothing wrong with thinking differently)
I have now gained even *more* mad respects for them than I already have.
Eeyup.

@@ChristHoon you’re literally a kiss ass for knd
I cannot begin to describe how deeply sad I am this show didn’t get picked
Funny thing is, CN was interested in it. They just decided to put their full focus on KND since it won the contest.

To those who don't know yet, the story behind why Bobo has dogs for parents is because it's based on Kevin Kaliher's life who is Korean but was adopted by his American parents. It's kinda cute actually.
moggfree Meaghan Dunn, who also created this and did the artwork for this is a Korean adoptee too.
