  • Finally finishing my ride of the entire East Coast of the USA from Key West Florida to Canada. Day one has me riding from where I last ended the ride in Nashua NH to Auburn MA. Highlight of the day was stopping at the Major Taylor Memorial in Worcester Massachusetts. Marshall "Major" Taylor was an incredible person. His story of courage as an Afro American and World Class Cyclist is truly inspirational. Pick up the book "Major Taylor, the Forgotten Legend" by Conrad Kerber. It's a must read. Available on Amazon.

      Hey Tony, it was a great day. I never knew about the Major until I saw a Hennessy Cognac commercial featuring him as a successful athlete. I then went down the rabbit hole of information on the internet. Never knew that during his time, bicycle racing was the number 1 spectator sport in the USA. Filling up stadiums with tens of thousands. How times have changed. Thanks again Tony and I hope the weather is starting to cool off in your neck of the woods. Stay safe, Steve

    Very cool info about Major Taylor! I hadn’t heard of him - very nice statue in Worcester. Like the new graphics on your videos and your new helmet! Fantastic video as usual. Safe travels.

      Hi Elizabeth, hope you're enjoying some nice weather today. I only learned about the Major by accident a few years ago. I saw a TV commercial for Hennessy Cognac featuring Major on his bicycle as a successful young athlete. I googled him and went down the rabbit hole of information regarding he and bicycle racing during the late 1800's in North America. I was amazed to find how bicycle racing drew thousands of people to stadiums around North America. The book I referenced is worth a read. Thanks for the comment about my intro graphics. Trying to step it up a bit. Have a great day Elizabeth and Take care, Steve

    "A path down a dead end road next to a dumpster... what could go wrong?" Story of my life Steve. Oh, and hi Jan! The start of your ride looked very foggy. I'd be a bit nervous in traffic with those conditions. Thanks for showing us your bike set up! You have all the gadgets. Nice. You're getting very creative with your camera angles too. Charles from 'Adventures of a Fat Man' wants me to ride across the US with him within the next year. He is very keen. Your videos aren't helping! I hope your camp ground was good the next night. We'll see I guess. 😊

      Hi Penelope, fortunately the path next to the dumpster turned out okay. It was a very foggy morning but became a beautiful day. I think you and Charles will have an epic adventure cycling across the USA. What could possibly go wrong?? Only kidding. It will be the ride of a lifetime. Hope the weather is fine this weekend for you both. Take care and stay safe, Steve & Jan

    I am in my late 60’s and want to get back into cycling. I didn’t realize how little information there on TH-cam on ‘seasoned’ cyclists. I so glad that I found your channel. You and your content is so encouraging. Thank you! FYI - I also have an Infinity Saddle. One of my best purchases ever. 😊 I’m out of shape but I am really looking forward to riding agin.

      Hi Angela and thank you for your nice comment. Getting back into cycling can be challenging but taking it slow at first is the way to go. At your own pace and setting small goals is the key. Consistency will reap rewards! Good to hear you bought an Infinity saddle. Best seat ever!. Thanks again and have a great week, Steve

    Infinity Bicycle Saddle made in El Segundo, California, how does it compare to the Brooks B17?

    • @steveretiredandcycling
      @steveretiredandcycling  ปีที่แล้ว

      Haven't tried the Brooks B17. But the Infinity works well for me and my wife. Way to expensive though. Thanks for the comment, Steve

      Hi again Terry, yes Major Taylor was a special person. There are some great books out there documenting his life. There's also a movie in the works. Thanks again, Steve

    Look a good set-up, Steve. Never seen a saddle like that before though!

      Hi Jay, love my Infinity saddle. Expensive, but for me it's the most comfortable seat for long distances. Because the owner of Infinity has a patent on the design, he is now charging an obscene amount of money for the saddle. Sometimes they do come up on ebay. Hope all is well with you, Take care, Steve

      Hi Steven, my route took me through Oxford and Webster on route 12. I was a few miles from Southbridge. It would have been great to ride with you and your wife. I was a great ride once I got off of Rt 12. Some beautiful trails. Thanks again and stay safe, Steve

    Nice leg of your trip Steve. I’m glad I learned a bit about Major Taylor. That MA traffic should give you a bit more room on the road! Good luck on the rest of the trip!

    I am enjoying watching you ride all these miles. It inspires me to get this nearly 58 year old body on a long distance ride. I am wondering if you are considering riding the TransAm trail (Virginia to Oregon, or vise versa)? I will watch whatever trails you decide to do, just DO IT, right??

    • @steveretiredandcycling
      @steveretiredandcycling  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Amy, you're only 58? Just a child! They tell me life begins at 70. I'll find out in November. I'm a firm believer that as we age, if we stop moving, pretty soon we will stop moving. The older we get the more low impact physical activity we need. BUT, its so easy to sit back and take it easy. Don't know whether I'll do the TransAm. Lots of options ahead. Take and all the best, Steve
