Sensational and incredible scenery! You are experiencing life at the pinnacle of human endeavour man. The technology and design involved in making this clip and everything the viewers see is phenomenal. Well done and congratulations. Vicarious man!
Hi Damien, that's the best DW SUP Foil video I have seen. Very Inspiring . I have a 120 Liter DW SUP Board with an 80cm F One Carbon mast. I weigh 200 pounds. What F One foil would you recommend I use?
Great video and best tips I've seen so far! Keep going, you guys rock! One question: size of the paddle vs size of the rider? Shorter than usual SUP? Thanks!
As I understand it is important to size correctly. Its not necessarily a bigger is better mantra. If the board has too much volume for the rider they may not have as much ability to paddle in a straight line. I think the boards need to sit in the water a bit to go forward appropriately. As always awesome video. Cool to see you guys in the PNW: Idaho and Oregon
great vid.. what kind of foil would you recommend? HA, MA etc.. experienced wing/towfoiler. downwind sup looks fun as well.. i live near the Gorge. Thanks!
I would recommend one of the new 180 -220 HA-X wings from Lift Foils. The 150 HA -X is everyones goto but if you are new the 180 and 220 will make it great to learn and still have great performance. Paired with say a 21 or 31 Flow tail you will be so happy! More here: th-cam.com/video/AUchDAc9FTA/w-d-xo.htmlfeature=shared
Great video. Watched some guys launch at the Hatch back in June. Didn't look easy! Do you have spots already identified downwind where you can get to shore easily?
I noticed on the Pop Up he had his feet position forwad then moved his feet slightly back immediately once on Foil. Was the initial Foot Position to help raise the stern out of the water and release the board from the water?
Such a great video. Looks like he moves both feet a bit closer together / narrows his stance for pumping efficiency -- he talks about his narrow stance about midway through. In the short version you can see him narrow his stance more clearly (bit more zoomed in). @OskarJohansson has a great vid on this. Thanks to Matt, Gwen and Damien ! Quality tutorial on the epic Hood River from an awesome local foiler. More downwind content please!
really nice video, congratz! is it possible to do downwind in a big wing board? I have a F-One Rocket Wing 5’10 110L board, is it possible or it will be very hard?
The problem is that if it’s easy to stand on, it’s hard to catch anything other than a breaking wave. The long and narrow shape is what allows us to catch tiny bumps. Once you understand the technique to use the paddle to be more stable, it gets a lot easier, but yes at first it’s not easy 😅 but totally worth it 🤩 reminds us the struggle of learning how to wing 😆
@@DamienLeroyTH-cam I absolutely get it. Was just adding the perspective that no matter how you have experienced foiling , the materials here require a very specific set of skills to build 🤙
What is the model of the paddle ? it doesn’t look like a SUP paddle
Quickblade Stingray 72in2. It is small in blade size but has lots of bite and power due to the shape of the blade.

This is by far the most perfect way to film a DW tutorial. Drone + waterproof mic! Pure gold, thanks! ….more of these please 😊
Thank you! We appreciate you.
Yes! One of the best yet. Great narrative, Matt!
I'm agree with you!
So good! I've been waiting for a comprehensive SUP downwind video to pop and here it is. Thank you!
Awesome glad we could help!

Thanks for the lesson, you've got me thinking I should try getting up and paddling some more.
What a great post! Smooth delivery of a difficult but beautiful discipline. Highly appreciate this channel and all the contents you guys create!
Thank you for the kind words.
Haha! I appreciate the honesty about needing a way to call for a ride to get back home!
Yewwww!
Incredible video, especially at the 8:00 mark. Audio is great.
Thank you for the kind words, that is all the magic of Gwen and Matt! :)
Amazing thank you so much guys! Appreciate all the clips at the end especially too
Awesome! Glad we could help.
the paddle always on the water is a great tip, never thought it.
Right Awesome tip!
So THATS why people want me to get into downwind, they just need a ride home!

Except how you get back doesn't look like freedom to me

Yes about same size as you, so shorter than typical SUP paddles

Sassy, you are a beast!

Yes 100% they have multiple exits depending on conditions and if anything goes wrong.
I noticed on the Pop Up he had his feet position forwad then moved his feet slightly back immediately once on Foil. Was the initial Foot Position to help raise the stern out of the water and release the board from the water?
Very cool right. I think you are spot on!

No, the initial foot position is for paddling board trim, then as the foil engages move back into foiling position. Mast track position is critical.
I lost 2 kg since I tried to get up on my 130 liter SUP like you do in your video…. Where you make it look sooo easy
really nice video, congratz!
is it possible to do downwind in a big wing board?
I have a F-One Rocket Wing 5’10 110L board, is it possible or it will be very hard?
It's possible but it would be really hard
Excellente vidéo, what board is he on?
It’s a custom 105L board
What mic are you using on water? Instamic pro?
dumb question, what microphone did you use when he was out on the water?
Yeah, not a dumb question. I was thinking the same!
Even for a regular foiler, even standing on one of these new downwind boards is a challenge compared to a 2021 SUP Foil (eg Fanatic Sky SUP 6.7)
The problem is that if it’s easy to stand on, it’s hard to catch anything other than a breaking wave. The long and narrow shape is what allows us to catch tiny bumps. For sure! DW SUP foiling will make sure to make anyone feel like a beginner again! 😆
Beautifull!!
Incredible place right!
Hello. Nice video. I have a Cabrinha macro 5'4" with axis 940 front wing foil. It's possible to startup in flat water with this?
It would be very difficult I think, you need a narrower board, more efficient in the water
How do you get back upwind to your original launch/parking spot?
Good question
Do you rail tape a downwind sup board?
You for sure can! We do.
What board are you using in this video? Looks like a Lift?
It’s a custom prototype board
Crap I bought a E3 6'1 115l 😮 for my first board.
But how to get back?
👍🍺
HA, you skipped the part about getting back to your car. Can you take those things on the bus? I don't think so.
They do it in Cocoa Beach, FL. :)
Hey you missed it, he literally said you need a watch to call someone to pick you up downwind.
Holy shit I live 30 mins from hood river lol
