  • On September 26, 1922, Charles' great-grandfather Charles Robert (always known as "Bobby") Spencer died. He was the youngest MP in the House of Commons, and went on to serve as Lord Chamberlain to Edward VII, the late Queen's great-grandfather. Bobby Spencer was devastated by the loss of his wife Margaret, in childbirth in 1906. She was the light of his life. On a more superficial level, Bobby was noted as one of the best-dressed men of his era.

I can't imagine having access to so many images and dairies from my ancestors; I'm envious.

When I started watching these videos, what struck me was how open and approachable you seemed. To then hear how your visitor described Charles Robert, it seems the apple doesn't fall far from the tree, and that you share this great quality. Thank you for sharing the history of your home. How wonderful to have diaries of your ancestors, little windows into their characters and to the lives they led. Good luck with the walled garden. A New Zealand follower.

Just found your videos last week and I’m doing a catch-up of them all. I immediately subscribed to both your channel and to the weekly newsletter. I find the history of Althorp extraordinary and all the written diaries and documentation left behind by your ancestors must be a wonderful insight into how they lived during the various times. Thank you to both you and your lovely wife for sharing with us. ❤🇨🇦

An interesting element in the sixth Earl's biography is that he was ennobled before he even succeeded to the earldom. In 1905, King Edward VII created him Viscount Althorp in the peerage of the United Kingdom, to enable him to serve as Lord Chamberlain. Viscount Althorp had and has been a subsidiary title of the Earls Spencer since the dignity was created in 1765 (in the peerage of Great Britain), so when in 1910 Viscount Althorp in the peerage of the United Kingdom succeeded as Earl Spencer, he bore two distinct titles of Viscount Althorp, a curious distinction enjoyed by all subsequent Earls Spencer.

This series of videos is so interesting and hearing the stories of these past humans (of Spencer), I bought the documentary "Secrets of Althorp" and love it!

This makes me wonder if I should keep a diary of my life. Would future generations want to know about my day to day existence? 🤔

The good news is one never actually leaves they just transition into an after life in the family necropolis instead. Trapped in a deontological conundrum the current residents become the sort of undertakers to carry on a dynastical tradition of internment.
