- Fitzroy Laneway House is an architects own tiny house grounded in foresight and malleability - attributes that an architect brings when designing their own home. Andrew Child of Andrew Child Architecture creates a family home designed with both the present and the future in mind that eloquently responds to its inner-city Melbourne location.
Andrew was immediately drawn to the original home, which is one of five Victorian terrace homes in a historically rich street in Fitzroy - a vibrant locale with lots of old buildings mixed in with new pieces of architecture. The brief for an architects own tiny house was to create a residence that would accommodate Andrew and his family into the future and be open to change. “I also wanted something quite informal, that felt relaxed. We want to have fun here,” says Andrew.
Fitzroy Laneway House is founded on the notion of connection to the site and the surrounding area. “I wanted the house to feel like a sanctuary, but I still wanted it to feel like we are connected to Fitzroy,” notes Andrew. As such, large windows offer views of the garden, neighbouring buildings and across rooftops. “If things change, like trees knocked down, we have installed shading blinds, timber screens, metal screen curtains, drapes and hanging planters, which all help with managing privacy while still making us feel connected to the locale,” says Andrew.
The interior design of an architects own tiny house often reflects a considered, layered approach. Downstairs is a music studio currently used by Andrew’s son that can be entered from the courtyard, an outdoor oasis surrounded by greenery. Upstairs is a parents' retreat with a master bedroom, a study space and a hidden ensuite uniquely characterised by exposed brickwork. The back building houses an upstairs office with a bathroom and kitchen that could become a studio apartment for Andrew’s son or a completely separate tenancy.
The furniture, décor and material palette are robust, imbuing an architects own tiny house with an informal and grounded feel. Recycled red brick dominates throughout, while crazy paving features inside and outside in the garden, complemented by concrete, internal timber cladding, stainless steel benchtops and steel joinery. Notably, green tiling features in the main bathroom, seamlessly blending with the greenery in the courtyard and beautifully counterbalancing existing brick and brass tapware.
Fitzroy Laneway House is an architects own tiny house that speaks to the power of informal interior design, malleable planning and the beauty of blending the old and the new in a way that reflects a home’s locale.

Hi from a neighbour down the Gertrude end of the same street - always wondered what was behind the entrance when walking my dog! Super cool to see.
A home with a primary bedroom floor with en-suite, separate studio apartment and music studio is not a tiny house by any definition, but it’s extremely well done and with particular care and thought to its surroundings.
That courtyard 💚💚💚 You could sit there and it could be anywhere - Florence, Monmartre, St Germain, Fitzroy! Stunning!
Agree … need to see a floor plan. The arty cinematography is great but leaves you with no idea of how you really use the space, it’s stunning in the detail, but it doesn’t really fully show the space and how each room flows into the next…but hands down stunning.
Love it! Love it! A real family home, designed around the family and the changing needs. With more than a nod to the tradition and indeed the Fitzroy vibe, the use of materials in an honest and direct way shines through. It is one of those places that even as a visitor you would fell instantly at' home' ,The courtyard is literally an oasis of calm and connection. Yep, love this one. Thank you to Andrew for sharing. Appreciated.
This beautiful, intimate, even cozy house is what great architecture is about. Namely creating space in harmony with how it is lived in and where it is settled. Everything is connected at an emotionally granular level. Beautifully done.
Well said!
Guys, your concept of "tiny" is drastically out of touch. Beautiful project though.
😂 right
Same thoughts!!
Way way way out of touch😢
“Drastically” is the right term lol
I mean even the entry room is bigger than some Fitzroy bedrooms!
So beautiful! I like how the interiors capture so much of the external urban vibe and yet feel private, cozy, and lush.
Certainly the biggest "tiny" house I've ever seen 🤪🤣🤣!
Whatever, it's really great 😉💯!
It's a small house, with low ceilings but the renovations and addition somehow made it open and sleek. There are many materials used - red brick, white brick, stone floors, timber on walls, tiles, etc - but somehow it all works together. And even a bit of nature is incorporated into the house with well placed windows. A superb execution!
A beautiful house full of light and shadows.
Lovely, beautiful… also appreciate the foresight of future tenants and privacy
Very cool! There is the feeling of being cocooned in warmth. Love houses like this. Beautiful job.
It really is!
Watched this twice back to back. Lovely considered build, including interior design and decoration.
Absolutely love this house! I agree that although it's in a urban area, it feels like a sanctuary.
Aussies have such beautiful, substantial, and well-designed homes! Love how LP profiles all hail the indigenous peoples and lands on which the home is built upon and how it adds to the spirituality of the home.
Yeah this is not a normal Aussie home. If this sold tomorrow it would be sold somewhere between 3 to 5 million dollars.
Sorry to say, but the majority of "Aussie" houses are poorly designed, wasteful use of space, obsessed with status
That editing as the background music leads into the live guitar, so good.
Beautiful. Who'd have known that crazy paving could look so right and complement a modern building? Getting rusticity spot on in a modern space. Well done
Love the Fitzroy halfway house
Almost a Kyoto Machiya. I love it.
Turned out nice exactly what people need
Beautifully considered home. Lovely and inviting whilst showcasing wonderful design.
What an amazing sanctuary you’ve created. Well captured by TLP.
Love it, that is my dream style. Thanks 👍
Glad you like it!
This is definitely a well thought-through home and should last a lifetime. Well done.
This is art 🍓
very artistic, beautifully done small foot print house
Beautiful design and material choices. 🏆
Amazing use of space
It's a thoughtful design, well-executed, and deserves publication for itself, but not as a tiny house. It would surprise me if the architect and designers had anything to do with the use of the word 'tiny' in the title of this post. I think the word tiny was clickbait for people like me who wouldn't have looked at the video or article otherwise. For those who want a clearer picture, the video and article about the house on the Institute of Australian Architects website give a much better understanding of the house and its use than The Local Project post does.
Stunning! Congratulations ❤
House is great, videography impeccable :-)
Beautiful & honest design
Absolutely gorgeous.
Beautiful!
absolutely sick vibe, cool dad and fam
"It's a beautiful thing, how much money, and style, we do have. "
My favourite room is the green bathroom ❤
Wow the house is so beautiful!
It really is!
lovely
The shots highlight individual features but very hard to understand the layout, orientation, or size of the house. I’d love to see how the rooms connect; too many closeups of textured surfaces and…foliage??
Love love love this
You did a good job its definitely a lane way house 🏠 👏
This TINY is so COZY 😍😍😍
love it!
LOVE IT
You could put 'tiny' in quotes....
to indicate that the meaning of the word or phrase they surround should be taken to be different from (or, at least, a modification of) that typically associated with it.
I have been watching ur channel for long, Every house u show is unique and i learned a lot even though I am not a student of Interior design or Architect. Please can u give a tour of snow/winter home from a cold place.
Yes, we will very soon 🙂
@@TheLocalProject Thanks a lot
Very nicely done. Still small footprint so I say tiny fits...
LOVE to hear the land acknowledgement before a home tour.
Beautiful house. But it’s about 10 times bigger than a tiny house.
Would love to see a blueprint of the actual house. Gives a bit more context of the layout
TINY
An architect designs his own home and yet because this is the internet, people feel compelled to criticize. I'm sure his family is quite comfortable and happy with the results. That's what matters in the end
Absolutely stunning. (Also absolutely not a tiny house.)
Is the home an extension of the Terrace house? or sit beside it?
Loveeee it! (But it's not tiny😂)
🥰
I appreciate the artistic close up zoom shots but there's far too many, very distracting and annoying. Please show braoder shots that last more than 2 seconds so we can actually appreciate the layout and decor of the house. 🍻
not a tiny house at all but very beautiful
I'm so confused. I need to see the floorplan.🤔
Watched the whole video twice and still have no idea what this house looks like.
Why is your house on the land of the Wurundreri People?
Thank you for your land acknowledgement. My condolences to the wurundjeri tribe who were viciously robbed of their ancestral homeland to make way for this colonizers bungalow.
This is 2 million house I guess. If I had this money. I'd prefer live in ordinary terrace around. Feels much warmer and normal. This house are over designed packed with strange ideas
Tiny......🤨🤨🤨🤨🤨🤨🤨
It is on the dark side for me, there is not enough sunlight throughout the property compared to a detached/free-standing home in the area. Good effort but not for everyone.
A beautiful home but the acknowledgement of the Wurundjeri people here rings very hollow. The median price of a 3 bedroom home in Fitzroy is 1.66 million dollars. Indigenous Australians have lived in the area continuously but recent rapid gentrification has seen them displaced to other areas where housing is cheaper.
forty winks
A beautiful home but hardly a tiny home. In comparison to a mansion maybe.
Probably a nice house, but not sure, I still have no idea what it looks like. The video is a head-spinning kaleidoscope of random house parts without any discernable connection to each other.
Cos of living crisis
TINY???
so badly shot, no idea of the plan. Just zero quality for perspective.
Why do Australians ask a question when they make a statement? It can be quite tiring constantly searching for answers to statements.
It can be quite tiring answering other peoples questions.
I don't think we do that??? You should spend your spare time doing other things......
There is nothing "tiny" about this property. Why use the term? Do you think it will get you extra views???
Yes, folk will look at the LP work, so does it really matter. Just enjoy it for the great craft/ Architecture that is done
"We're in Fitzroy", where only incredibly privileged wealthy people get to own their own homes, enjoy the scenery and shops, and live privileged lives. Those of us who were renting there 40 years ago look on in disbelief. The "Provincial" hotel is now a fancy wine bar. It is perverse. Many artists have to live in the outer suburbs, or on the streets. The homeowners live with the homeless nearby. Australia is no longer the land of the lucky and the fair go. When architects start talking about their "brass tap ware" in Fitzroy, ya know things are bad. Perverse wealth inequality.
That’s NOT a tiny house
Camera work is appalling
Stay off the crack man......
Is it just me or are majority of the creators they profile white? I feel like there’s barely any BIPOC creators showcased - not in touch with what’s going on in the world at all. Beautiful projects though
