Inside The World’s Most Remote Cabin (House Tour)

- Creating a place for people to reconnect with each other and nature, Patterson Associates built a cabin that sits upon the New Zealand landscape with advantageous coastal views. Located on a working sheep and cattle farm on the Banks Peninsula, Scrubby Bay is extremely remote. The cabin home is architectural in its design and faces straight into the sub-Antarctic weather that comes in from the bay and down the mountains. Moreso, due to the home’s location, there is a wide variety of wildlife, including an array of birds, dolphins and whales.
Faced with the decision of what to design and how to design it, the architect was drawn to building a residence that responded to the site. Moreover, seen in the house tour of the cabin is the bay, which tends to be covered in driftwood. This helped influence the architect on choosing the unique materials and timber for the project.
Designed to age and get better with time, Scrubby Bay is laid out as two simple gabled barn forms that are slotted together. Specifically arranged for families or large groups renting off Airbnb, the house can accommodate up to 16 people and encourages them to come together and experience the natural landscape. Three main bedrooms have been created for the adults and spread throughout the gabled form of the home. Additionally, seen in the house tour, at each side of the home are two gathering areas, one being an entertainment deck facing the ocean and the other is a pool facing the rear mountains. As the cabin tour progresses, the middle of the home is revealed, where a living space has been placed as a central gathering spot. The home also offers unparalleled views from the rear mountains and out to the ocean making for a picturesque Airbnb stay.
Due to the home’s farm location, as well as being out in the open to face the harsh elements of the bay, the house needed to be robust. The cabin also had to feel good for people to walk around in gumboots should they need. Moreover, the home’s materials had to be shipped in via small trucks from Christchurch, the nearest city, and construction of the home was stopped and restarted due to the weather, sheep season and the remote location. Using materials that were found around the farm, the architect built the house out of timber, including driftwood employed throughout the interior design of the home. The centrepiece of the main living space is a stone fireplace - built from rocks found at the nearby remote rock quarry - that separates living, dining and kitchen spaces. The interior design of the home features many bespoke elements including decor, fabrics and lighting. Intrinsically placed upon the landscape as if it is a part of it, Scrubby Bay is more than just a uniquely remote place to stay but a place to connect to the coastal landscape and with each other.

Well done to the photographer for all the magnificent b-roll!
Yes! Thank you!
Agree. Absolutely stunning!
The Director of Photography absolutely killed it. Every shot was spectacular
This is probably the most artistic film you guys did.. the b-rolls are wow! It’s very emotional in a good way. Your branding is impeccable. 👌🏻✨
I could easily retire in New Zealand, beautiful and unique architecture, landscapes and this home....oh my its heavenly. Great design!
Couldn't agree more!

I like the image of the house being a bridge between humans and nature. Very privileged
Ironic. That is farmland - forest that has been pillaged by humans. It is not natural "nature".
The land has been very pillaged by humans hands.
This is by far the most beautiful location ever shown in local projects it’s like my dream location ❤❤❤ absolutely loved it
Very good 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🥰 concordo plenamente meu amigo. É um pedaço do céu aqui na terra 🌍👍🏽🥰🙏🏽🙌🏻
What a divine way to spend 10 minutes. Just extraordinary . Thank you LP!
Glad you enjoyed it!
My new favorite Local Project video!! Absolute perfection.
Wow, thank you!
I really love how the house was build, and then the PHOTOGRAPHY. The director of photography absolutely astonishingly very well shot. What a briliant work!
You could live in a simple shack in this locale, and it would be breathtaking. The house is fine, but the scenery is the show-stopper. And the pool does not work for this property; it is tasteless. The cinematographer did an amazing job.
Beautifully filmed and narrated. Stunning property and home.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Wow, I'm blown away by how stunning this house tour is! Massive props to the creative team behind the scenes. The editing, shot selection, and choice of music are absolutely spot on, really elevating the whole experience. You all have truly outdone yourselves in showcasing the beauty of this house and its surroundings!
Goosebumps. This is magical. The owners are very priveleged.
Happy owners of this beautiful home, the most exotic location I have ever seen.
Not a cabin. It’s a house - even Andrew talks about the house. Very beautiful!
Cinematography and color-grading are on point, besides the building being an architectural gem blending into its natural surroundings just wonderfully.
Simplicity at its absolute finest. Bravo 👏🏻
This was a cinematic experience
wow! i love the smell of micrakapa. this property is jaw dropping.
something i'd build in minecraft, such a sick house and location. although i don't like how much land has been cleared, should integrate local flora into the garden, making it look seamless intothe landscape and bay
Stunningly beautiful. Thank you for sharing this amazing property with us.
Glad you enjoyed it!
@@TheLocalProject I most certainly did. Thanks again.
The sound design has a lot of subtle, nice touches
New Zealand is beyond beautiful
Oh my goodness. Not just one of my favourite houses on youtube, but also one of my favourite videos on youtube! Breath-taking!
😇
Uau 😍 concordo plenamente 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏽👏🏽👏🏾👏🏾🙌🏻🙏🏽🥰👍🏽 tudo é tão extraordinário e transcendental
Cool house, couldn't help notice I was staring at a couple steel lintels as the architect was talking about using embodied carbon (timber) to form the enclosure.
This was a very well done video. 👏
Glad you enjoyed it!
Beautiful.
Only thing that doesn’t make sense is a couch with a short back. Replace the couch and it’s perfect.
Absolutely it's just a remarkable spot with incredible architecture.
Exquisite in every way, what a dream project
Absolutely insane location.
Magnificent, very fitting for the harsh environment and surrounds.
The house is okay. The place is wonderful!
Simply sublime architecture, simple forms and humble materials. The location feels so exclusive, secluded and still in the open. The cinematography behind the documenting of this project is so immersive, capturing a magnificent sense of place. I felt like I was hovering over the whale in the ocean, walking the footpaths, climbing the hillsides, foraging through the shrubs, racing the cows and shepherding sheep. This was a sweet nostalgia, beautifully captured.
Couldn't agree more!
My goodness. Its absolutely beautiful.
In my dreams, this is what heaven looks like. Absolutely beautiful.
I was gonna say this looks like picturesque nz and it is… SOOOOOO BEAUTIFUL! straight out of a dream
Beautiful cinematography!
All I can think about is a stormy king tide washing that place away! Or a massive rain event flooding the plain! I'm sure it was built so that won't happen. But I'm biting my nails. While timber is great, I think where the location is the exterior is going to need some maintenance in about 10-15 years lol
Such an exquisite home and location. I imagine staying there would be a meditative treat. Well done.
It really is!
This house and its location is one of my all time favourites. I would love to stay there for a week or so! Amazing location and love the timber and simple form of the buildings and fantastic photo and videography
Very good!!! 🙌🏻👍🏽👏🏾👍🏾🌟🤝
The idea of a barn house is truly represented 😊
Beautiful landscape... but I would've liked to see more of the house.
Beautiful
unbelievable!
Props to the cinematographer and post production.
Spectacular! The best I’ve seen on your channel.
Glad you think so! 🙂
Beautifully shot. Beautiful nature. Beautiful project.
Incredible house in an incredible location. Loved the poetic description.
Glad you enjoyed it!
I love all equally ~ house, photography and story teller... what an epic and beautiful project.
The point in tasmania and this one. Just heavenly.
Great scenery, buildings and builder with charismatic storytelling. The landscape is a masterpiece.
That coastal flat land between two mountains is flat for a reason: it’s a flood plain. Hope that NZ has a good tsunami warning system.
This is my favourite place on earth. House ain't bad either 😉
Great work ! I like it very much especially plenty of wood and correlation to surrounding nature .Although lack of trees or plants in close surrounding creates a felling of emptiness .
he's a little confused but he got the spirit
imagine having your own bay as a homeowner😅😅
It would be an honor to visit and experience such a beautiful place. Thank you so much for sharing.🙏
Our pleasure 😊
Is this heaven? ....I hope so because it's serene and stunning and I could live here forever.
This Cinema Photography is sound 🔥
Beautiful place and Cabin. There's no "I'm just popping to the shop do you want anything?" with this place!
Very true! 😅
The MOST BEAUTIFUL CABIN in the MOST WONDERFUL REMOTE place on....EARTH (?? 🤔) it took me more than half hour to watch it, rewinding and pausing several times...!!,👊✨️👊✨️👏👏📽🎬🎞
This is what a dream is supposed to look like.
It's a fascinating reminder of humanity's capacity to adapt and thrive even in the most isolated corners of the world. ❤❤
If I had to imagine paradise, this would be it.
breathtakingly beautiful
Wow 😮incredible filmed big applause to the director/ photographer/ clipper for this video. Please use same one in future 🙏 😊
now that looks like a dream location for a cabin🤩
It really does..!
10/10 perfection. Great job.
Glad you think so!
This is ART.
Hermosa e integrada en el soberbio paisaje.
Absolutely stunning building beautiful architecture by one of my favourite architects.
😍
What did he mean saying the weather is harsh? too windy? Can somebody from this region describe more about it, please? It's look like a paradise. Absolutely love it.
Hi, I'm a local and while I haven't been to this bay (around an hour's drive from the station (ranch) head on very precarious 4x4 track (there are no safety barriers, you don't turn when you should and you're going 50-80 metres down a step bank into the ocean), I have been on the property (Annandale is the place).
This is the on the east coast of the South Island on a peninsula. The next piece of landmass going east is Chile -10,000km away. The strong ocean winds, cold and powerful water (no exactly the nicest to swim in), and the fact the NZ weather is infamous for having "4 seasons in one day", you get a very strong, very harsh, ever changing, weather system that is constantly battering the coast line. Cold stormy weather, known as a 'Southerly' is the winds and strong weather coming up from Antarctica. Antarctica - that freezing cold place. Yeah, brutal.
I have been on this property on lovely calm spring days, I have also been here on days when mother nature wants to show you what she has up here sleeve - I did not want to be outside longer than I had to! Wind chilling my bones, rain going sideways and somehow upwards?! Very brutal. They got their imagery on a good day - there are a few of those, but I wouldn't count on having a full weeks worth of it.
@@HaYouDontSay thank you!
THIS VIDEO ITSELF is...A PIECE OF ART, BRAVOOOO‼️👏👏🪄👏👏🪄👏👏🪄
He said “about million years ago” 😂 crazy how people can say this things.
Other than that the house and landscape are lovely
Breathtaking! The ultimate escape. Thank you for sharing.
Our pleasure!
Brilliant Project! This is Architectural construction at its best! Excellent site-specific design!
We agree!
Bravo to all involved. Just stunning.
Spectacular house, camera work and commentary. House is very practical, serene and remote... so you can connect to self and nature. Fantastic project.
I think it's magnificent. More magnificent still would be the landscape without a house.
What a beautiful home and what a spectacularly directed video - I could feel myself transported to this remote and magnificent place in the world. Thank you for sharing it with us.
Glad you enjoyed it!
APPLAUD APPLAUD APPLAUD THE CROUD GOES WILD. Only if the sheeps 0:28 didn't move at all, would've looked like a still life lol
Yall did so great on this video. It looks like a movie made by Michelangelo.
Edit: On a real note, this gave me actual goosebumps, the sort of synth elements of music overlapping with this feeling of "this feels to real esc". The piano undertones hit when they needed to. The deep setting voice over -Andrew did so well- the attitude, the stopping between thoughts. The elements and color scheme never supprised me like "oh that doesn't fit it". From 3:00 it felt like you were sharing a statement and a story and moving straight onto the layout of the home to the camera of Andrew Patterson felt so real, I have to applaud. I had to share this video with my dad you guys did so great.
Patterson is the best!
this is one of the best. well done
This is like the ultimate escape home😍
Yes, it's a whole 5 minutes from the neighbours, and 26 minutes from the nearest town. It's not as remote as they make out.
@@PLuMUK54 By neighbours you probably referring to the animals😂
Absolutely phenomenal.
the cinematographer went hard on this one for absolutely no reason.
Loved how neat, tasteful and timeless the cabin is. The videography is on another level😍
This is gorgeous. Perfect for an forever get away.
Stunning!
Isn’t it! 😍
It should be illegal to show such beauty. Breathtaking!
Impressive landscape, building does not lend itself to harsh weather...expensive😮
Gorgeous home, magnificent landscape!
We agree!
Stunning house. Just one thing I don't get... how they solved electricity problem? :)
what a beautiful home, thank you for sharing
Our pleasure!
Since this cabin is in a remote area, I am curious how the architect addressed the issues we take for grant living in a city such as water source, internet, public utilities and sewer? It's a beautiful cabin
its only an hour from Christchurch so hardly remote
@@loloq4531 The Local Project titled this video as ""Inside The World’s Most Remote Cabin" 😃...I guess 1 hour makes it "most remote"
Место простота и качество это показатели обширного внутреннего мира 👌
stunning home! Love it
Litterally a paradise
