Never had this problem in Overwatch 1 but for some reason in the past 2 year everyone is finally speaking up on this issue. People like Flats said the report system wasn't strict enough just earlier this year or last year(don't really remember) and said people were faking their appeal tickets because of 1 reddit user. Now he admits the system is flawed( something he didn't do in his original video on the subject) after trying "own" people who were complaining about this and saying they don't have a life because they're mad they got banned. All this happened because some hotshot got banned it went viral but not when everyday normal players said it was an issue. Literally got banned for typing L and mei diff this was after I stopped swearing in chat and got banned anyways.
Yeah that Flats vid seemed really off in hindsight. Having hours of your life put to waste due to other people out to get you does warrant being at least mildly upset, not being told "Get a life and care about something else more" If no one cared in the first place, they'd just quit rather than being banned.
The thing is that you can't even defend yourself because their is no option to get access to your chat log and/or logs of your matches. I would search the evidence for my innocence myself but on your suspension notice they don't even write anymore why you are suspended neither. There is no transparency and no contestability.

I told a feeding Dva player on my team to stop feeding and I got an abusive chat warning a day later. For the record I was playing Lifeweaver and would pull this Dva behind cover at almost 1HP and she’d go right back into the fight and die. This happened multiple times. Guess Blizzard just wants me to lose the game since there’s no way I can communicate to my tank to stop pushing.
Just report the Dva for feeding. It's an option in there. And then report the Dva for everything else, too. Why not? This is what Blizzard wants. It's not a system for reporting abuse, it's a popularity contest. So vote on what you like and what you don't.
The irony is it affects everyone. Its a teambased game that encourages communication while asking you to risk your account. They should give up on vc and text chat like they did with LFG. No community building ensure safe spaces.
I got a silence warning a month ago even though I have my text, match and voice channel turned off in settings since the start of 2024. The report system is a joke! You can just abuse it against players you don't like playing with/against, or if you feel bad because someone is better than you in a match. I've even done an experiment for a week. At the start of every match, I would instantly report everyone in the lobby (in both teams) for harassment. I kid you not, every single time I would start the game the next day I would get a ton of "thank you for reporting" and "we made an action against a player you reported" for the whole week and even after. They also stated that 5 reports in a single match equal to 1 report for that match, so for maximum effectiveness, you can have your 3-4 stack report the same person in different time frames (~30 min difference) so the system thinks it's from different matches, my group and I tried it against an asshole once, works like a charm. All in all, the system is broken.

I haven't watched the vid yet (I'm about to) but the report system in Overwatch (BOTH 1 and 2, as well as other online games) works using an automated (hidden) score system. It's nothing new and it's something we always knew. Take it as if they were good boi points, the higher your points are, the higher you're likely to ban or penalize someone, even when they didn't do anything. A very common practice many years ago was to look up on Custom games for "afk "free XP" and so on and report them so you would increase your report score and be basically untouchable (if someone had a lower report score than you, and it happened way too often, their report wouldn't work) while deranking in comp. It could also snowball because you can throw/derank and while you're doing so people can get angry at you in chat and you can report them, thus penalizing them instead. Also, when reporting someone, you can abuse some keywords to make the report to most likely succeed. If you always wondered why people felt unbannable, this is why. They probably knew this was an issue in OW1 and tried to tune it to be more aggressive in OW2 but apparently it snowballed even harder.

Well there you have it: the report system is really just a popularity contest, a way for players to vote on what they want to see in their games. The rules and reasons are meaningless. So if someone's playing a hero you don't like, report them, it's just your way of voting against that hero being in the game. If someone says something you don't like, just vote against it, and report them. If someone doesn't heal you as much as they should, just vote against their being able to play the game, and report them. If this is what Blizzard wants, give it to them!
its actually frightening how easily u get banned in this game i played 1 session on one of my alts where i purposefully barely typed anything i go to log in the next day bang 2 weeks suspension no reason given in my email and when i ask the support what i did wrong i just get a bot reply to my ticket. Its genuinly insane i'm actually just scared to interact with anyone in the lobby because i know that any point my accounts can just get nuked for no reason. Check this out: Bought a new account…turned off all forms of communications. Bought a cheap,4 GB hdd and recorded every single game I played for 3 months…logged in one morning and was suspended for 72hours. After that ban was lifted I continued playing and was hit again with a ban but this time for 2 weeks.. This time I contacted support with video proof that I did nothing wrong,and got the ban removed….Blizzard support said I was reported for abusive chat…..i never used any comms on that account.ever

I got repeatedly muted and banned for disagreeing with people and chat while my teammates would literally be typing out full slurs and to this day haven't been banned. After a certain point, i stopped typing entirely and realized the report system was a weapon from blizzard that was to be used against the playerbase, and not for it. After that realization, i began mass reporting every dogshit, boosted player i found and got many of them muted or banned. I got a "thank you for your report, an action has been taken against their account" every time i booted up the game after that point. very few of those players did anything wrong besides playing poorly, but blizzard actively encourages the abuse of their systems. working as intended

I was recently warned of INAPPROPRIATE COMMUNICATION for typing "our DPS are on controllers again" in an unranked game (I watched the replay afterward: they were indeed using controllers, shooting the ground and walls and the back of the payload, getting zero elims in the match while the other team's DPS had 30 elims each). So it's fine for Blizzard to force me to play with console players in other people's groups that I didn't consent to play with, but it's not okay for me to SAY SO in match chat. So, yeah, I report liberally. Playing Widow or DF? Reported. "u suck"? Reported. Throwing? Reported. Picks support but only heals e-bf/gf? Reported. Junkrat into Pharah? Reported. Playing in a 4-stack and blaming the solo who actually was willing to queue tank and got forced to play with you? Reported. "Rein you left us behind" when you didn't walk through choke? Reported. You get the idea. Reports for everyone! If this is what Blizzard wants, IT'S WHAT BLIZZARD WILL ****ING GET. I report players that insult me for my race (I am black) or physical appearance or for saying slurs but all that did was make me get silenced because I insult people’s gameplay. Admittedly both are toxic but one is at least relevant to the game. It is not a good look when players will report the latter and not the former.
There is proof with a threshold amount of reports someone can get before being autobanned. It was either samito or carter_ow who proved it back in 2020 where they got banned for cheating without actually playing a game lol. In order for someone to get banned they need to receive *multiple* reports from *multiple* people across *multiple* games. A more likely scenario is your friend received *multiple* reports from previous games, but the ban didn't take effect until *after* the match where he said: "1 for pizza, 2 for ice-cream". That's why it seemed he was banned for asking a polling question.

I haven't watched the vid yet (I'm about to) but the report system in Overwatch (BOTH 1 and 2, as well as other online games) works using an automated (hidden) score system. It's nothing new and it's something we always knew. Take it as if they were good boi points, the higher your points are, the higher you're likely to ban or penalize someone, even when they didn't do anything. A very common practice many years ago was to look up on Custom games for "afk "free XP" and so on and report them so you would increase your report score and be basically untouchable (if someone had a lower report score than you, and it happened way too often, their report wouldn't work) while deranking in comp. It could also snowball because you can throw/derank and while you're doing so people can get angry at you in chat and you can report them, thus penalizing them instead. Also, when reporting someone, you can abuse some keywords to make the report to most likely succeed. If you always wondered why people felt unbannable, this is why. They probably knew this was an issue in OW1 and tried to tune it to be more aggressive in OW2 but apparently it snowballed even harder.
Currently silenced for typing "lololololol" and "what a loser" when I'm on ball and the enemy team swaps to hog/sombra after one fight. Let me make fun of my counters in peace.
Recently got a chat suspension on an account I exclusively type "glhf meow" and "ggwp meow" at the beginning and end of a match.
It did not get overturned with an appeal.
Well there you have it: the report system is really just a popularity contest, a way for players to vote on what they want to see in their games. The rules and reasons are meaningless. So if someone's playing a hero you don't like, report them, it's just your way of voting against that hero being in the game. If someone says something you don't like, just vote against it, and report them. If someone doesn't heal you as much as they should, just vote against their being able to play the game, and report them. If this is what Blizzard wants, give it to them!

its actually frightening how easily u get banned in this game i played 1 session on one of my alts where i purposefully barely typed anything i go to log in the next day bang 2 weeks suspension no reason given in my email and when i ask the support what i did wrong i just get a bot reply to my ticket. Its genuinly insane i'm actually just scared to interact with anyone in the lobby because i know that any point my accounts can just get nuked for no reason. I play tank for the majority and the amount of abuse and flaming u get for any loss regardless of what happens is insane and u just have to take it becasue if u reply u just get reported and im pretty sure they just false report u anyways because everyone knows how easy it is to get someone banned so they abuse the hell out of it.

It's stupid to ban people for saying those things, but it's also stupid to say them. The game is already over at that point, and you don't even know the people you're talking to. You can't see them, you can't hear them, you can't see their reaction, so you can't even get any selfish pleasure out of it. All you can do at that point is try to make some random human being who you'll never meet feel worse for no reason. It's pure negativity. It's nothing but injecting more misery and evil into the world. So just shut up and let the scoreboard do the talking. Stop mindlessly spamming nonsense just because other idiots do. Bought a cheap,4 GB hdd and recorded every single game I played for 3 months…logged in one morning and was suspended for 72hours.
After that ban was lifted I continued playing and was hit again with a ban but this time for 2 weeks..
This time I contacted support with video proof that I did nothing wrong,and got the ban removed….Blizzard support said I was reported for abusive chat…..i never used any comms on that account.ever

Yeah the report system is completely sad honestly. I've seen some videos discussing it, but hopefully, the more people that talk about it, the more likely they will do something about it..
I got repeatedly muted and banned for disagreeing with people and chat while my teammates would literally be typing out full slurs and to this day haven't been banned. After a certain point, i stopped typing entirely and realized the report system was a weapon from blizzard that was to be used against the playerbase, and not for it. After that realization, i began mass reporting every dogshit, boosted player i found and got many of them muted or banned. I got a "thank you for your report, an action has been taken against their account" every time i booted up the game after that point. very few of those players did anything wrong besides playing poorly, but blizzard actively encourages the abuse of their systems. working as intended
I'm very close to losing my 2nd account a month after losing my main account. The game is toast. All these bans are creating smurfs and trolls on alt accounts like crazy.

"Clown show" is a pretty good description of Blizzard nowadays. The inmates have taken over and are running the asylum. I was recently warned of INAPPROPRIATE COMMUNICATION for typing "our DPS are on controllers again" in an unranked game (I watched the replay afterward: they were indeed using controllers, shooting the ground and walls and the back of the payload, getting zero elims in the match while the other team's DPS had 30 elims each). So it's fine for Blizzard to force me to play with console players in other people's groups that I didn't consent to play with, but it's not okay for me to SAY SO in match chat.
So, yeah, I report liberally. Playing Widow or DF? Reported. "u suck"? Reported. Throwing? Reported. Picks support but only heals e-bf/gf? Reported. Junkrat into Pharah? Reported. Playing in a 4-stack and blaming the solo who actually was willing to queue tank and got forced to play with you? Reported. "Rein you left us behind" when you didn't walk through choke? Reported. You get the idea. Reports for everyone! If this is what Blizzard wants, IT'S WHAT BLIZZARD WILL ****ING GET. And when no players are left, maybe they'll lay off everyone, sell the IP, and maybe someone with a brain will fix the game. Jeff, where are you?

I’ve ran into so many cheaters lately and I report them I never login and see these people get banned but my account gets suspended for typing gg You passive aggressively at the end of my GM game when I get a shit 1 trick tank and auto lose after a 10+ minute solo queue but the cheaters can play for weeks on end hard aim botting get to just vibe out
I report players that insult me for my race (I am black) or physical appearance or for saying slurs but all that did was make me get silenced because I insult people’s gameplay.
Admittedly both are toxic but one is at least relevant to the game. It is not a good look when players will report the latter and not the former.
There is proof with a threshold amount of reports someone can get before being autobanned. It was either samito or carter_ow who proved it back in 2020 where they got banned for cheating without actually playing a game lol. Also, as an anecdote me and my friends have been having a lot of fun with this recent change in the reporting system by spam reporting random people for saying swear words in chat as a joke saying that it brings up past trauma and shit like that. every. single. time that me and my friends open the game now we're greeted with thank u for reporting! and it cracks me up so much. Earlier there was a guy who had his mic on in qp yelling at our team so I made the conscious decision to tell him to stfu knowing the possible consequences. 0:41 I doubt your friend got banned for typing "1 for pizza, 2 for ice-cream". In order for someone to get banned they need to receive *multiple* reports from *multiple* people across *multiple* games.
A more likely scenario is your friend received *multiple* reports from previous games, but the ban didn't take effect until *after* the match where he said: "1 for pizza, 2 for ice-cream". That's why it seemed he was banned for asking a polling question.

There's some general problems with the manual ban review and auto system in general, but exclusion is the only way to deal with bad culture. Honestly even the very common saying "bla bla bla diff" at the end of the game unless you are making a joke about your own performance should be cause for a long tempban when reported.
We could have a culture where people say "holy shit" or "fuck... nice one" when they get dabbed on instead of people gloating obnoxiously like you prefer. You're just damaged and internalized a shitty antisocial culture about pvp games because you had to adapt to it emotionally when playing games since you were a kid or it wouldn't be emotionally sustainable.

It's probably because of repeat offenses. Several people must report you for being toxic, annoying, or distracting. (Diff) type comments are normal. But if you're posting creepy (tuck me in) perverted comments you'll probably get a ban.
