Hey birbs! ^^ I've had this video planned for MONTHS. It's been something I wanted to talk about for a while now of why I have been avoiding playing overwatch lately and eventually quit (again). If you enjoy videos like this where I'm just yapping about myself for a couple minutes let me know and I'll try to make more content like this! I also tried to include pink mercy gameplay to celebrate the return of pink mercy (which I did buy the bundle :P). Anyways, enjoy!

I feel ya on the love and loss of OW1. OW2 felt...off for some reason. It wasn't until recently I put the pieces together. Without that 2nd tank, every roll has to be a "shooter" more. I was a support main and it was nice being able to contribute to the match without having to aim well like you said. You can still get that feeling a little with Mercy in OW2, but everything else feels more FPS driven which I'm terrible at. OW1 was nice because you could still contribute to your team without being a McShooty master.

    • @feenixsarchive
      @feenixsarchive  5 วันที่ผ่านมา +13

OW1 was such a unique experience, you could play one character in OW1 for years and never get bored cause there were so many variables and situations to get into . Even with characters that have a simple kit, it allowed people who didn’t even have an fps background to express their skill in more ways than just raw aiming . OW2 killed this concept in attempt to make the game easy for everyone .

I relate so strongly to your experience. The exception being that I only started with Overwatch 2.
I genuinely don't know how the developers think that this game is even remotely okay. I have nearly 1,000 hours in Overwatch 2 and a good chunk of that is me just gritting my teeth and hoping that it gets better.
The game I loved died a few seasons into It's lifetime, and even then it is clearly worse than the original. Even I can see that.
Anyways, my life has dramatically improved since I stopped playing. I still think about the game nearly every day, and I'm genuinely sad that I can't play anymore.
But Overwatch 2 is literally unhealthy for itself and it's players.

I hate OW but my timeline of getting there happened so much faster. I started playing OW2 around April 2023 after Lifeweaver was released. I had always been interested in the game back during its release but I heard how toxic it was and was scared to try but with OW2 being free to play and PVE being in the works I was excited to try.
And then not only did I find out that PVE wasn't happening but Lifeweaver was considered a throw pick for awhile and even today isn't considered that great competitively and people still constantly make videos about how bad he is. He's the hero I joined the game to play because I liked his kit so much. I have hundreds of hours on him, more than any other character and yet just bc of how he's valued and his kit I can't even feel comfortable playing competitive without being told Im throwing.
As such I ended up playing characters I was unfamiliar with in the beginning of my competitive journey and as a result I fell in rank really hard. I slowly climbed back up but I was so discouraged I just gave up comp immediately. What's the point of playing something if I cant even play the characters I like?
I have long since muted all chats aside from group & whispers and I exclusively play QP now. But when a game feels like this what's the point of playing it? I've resolved to play through the Battle Pass on each new season but other than that I don't play. I've gone back to my WoW roots and tbh it's so liberating. Dying in WoW for the first few times actually gave me anxiety and I realized it was bc of OW. Mount farming and daily quests are so much more relaxing lol

Remembering Overwatch 1 feels like I’m remembering a close friend that I’ll never see again. I made so many incredible memories and it was genuinely the most fun game I have ever played. Of course, it had a it’s fair share of issues, but the community and fluid nature of the game encouraged teamwork and communication in a way I had never experienced before and have failed to find since. Elements of this still exist in Overwatch 2, but it just feels like a neutered version of the game I fell in love with.
In retrospect, I don’t think the people making decisions about the game really ever understood what made it so great. It really bums me out that the game I fell in love with only exists alongside the memories I made in it - in the past and in my memory.

i have the same feelings as u when i quit
something that i could rationalize as why i dont like ow anymore was
    1. 5v5 feels like team deathmatch, i didnt like that mode in ow1 and only played qp and ranked. I liked the teamwork and coordination part of the game and 5v5 has taken that away little by little
    2. role passives, basically taking player agency away and giving it to the game. This makes it quite frustrating when it comes to decision making, feels like there are 10 wrong decisions and 1 right one.
It's ultimately about who you play not how you play. This format and passives is slowly killing hero identities..
That's mostly why it's boring to me now.. hopefully one day we will get 6v6 back with no passives as a game mode in the future

I can relate to this video so much. It actually touched my heartstrings, because I like you find it so hard to let go. I've "quit" Overwatch several times through the years even with OW1 but something always brought me back. It's this thought that one day I might feel that excitement like I used to back in 2016 and fomo with the skins. A part of me is still holding out that 6v6 will return and that I'll be happy I invested my time and money if or when Overwatch returns to those glory days. I wanna play Mercy and Kiriko too, but feel like I'm at a disadvantage so often when I meet a Bap, Lucio or Ana. You know the game is in a bad place when you are "forced" to play heroes you don't want/like just to keep up with the rest of the players. As a support main what I always loved was feeling like I could lift my teammates, enable them to pop off. It just feels great when you get that perfect rez or ultimate and turn the tides of the team fight. I've always gravitated towards supports in games, and I think it's for this reason. The fact that you know they really appreciate having you in their team, that you got their back. When they fall, you are there to lift them back up.
Also thank you for the Chrono Cross music

As a fellow GM/T500 player (though I played tank), same thing happened to me - took a break and realized I didn't even really like the game anymore and that break just got longer and longer until I barely cared. When I came back, I had no motivation to play or climb. It feels like a chore I'm forced to do. I don't know if it's the inferior ranked system, terrible reward incentives for play time or the gameplay loop changing, it's probably a combination of everything. I just stopped caring. Don't know how Blizzard managed to make me stop caring about a game I would play 8+ hours a day, but congrats, they managed to do it.

I think the best way I can put it is that overwatch 2 just feels directionless and hollow with random change for the sake of change.
Directionless in the sense of pointless character redesigns, time of day changes that ruin art direction, how uncohesive hero select animations seem now, the new ranked system, 5v5 and game direction as a whole.
Hollow in how the monitization changes removed basically all forms of progression, the loss of PVE and any progression of lore, skins for the sake of a battle pass theme instead of things that fit the character.
I know most of these things are "trivial" but the game has slowly ship of Theseus's itself into a compelelty different experience I want no part in. I guess that's what happens when most of the old dev team leaves blizzard.
Comparing it to a similar shooter I love and still do Splatoon and how that series progressed foreward while maintaining the soul of the series makes me sad to see the state of OW.

12:10 this is so so agreable, i really miss overwatch 1, sure lots of cc, shield etc but there was so many thing to learn, and overwatch was my comfort game and same goes to mercy, her movement overall was so smooth, i wished i had more time and chance to learn it better back then, and big part also the fact that every celebration there is skins you can get for free essentially if you have enough coin, now you have to play, it sucks.
everything pretty locked behind walls, "new game" but they started bringing back cass flashbang and trying to make rein shield more tankier, like you might as well open back overwatch 1, all they do is lie and lie to make you come back. stressing over stats especially with characters like ana and kiriko is so relatable, i was initially gonna reach gold.. was close in overwatch 1 but didnt happen, i dont know im kinda yapping sorry, just feel unnecessary to hype ow2 anymore, with everything they didnt do.. plus in ow1 you can play qp and actually have fun, where if you see now, its just too many sweat, toxicity at its max, you cant even have place to practice hero you want without getting dump with bucket of crap..

you thought you were addicted to Overwatch?? hahaha, just wait until ER clicks for you! now *thats* a game worth playing!!
gotta say tho, i felt that sentiment of yours where you said you lost all passion to play, let alone to improve. the stress of rank, the stats, dealing with toxicity and just general bullshit when life already has enough of that? yeah... it wasn’t fun, wasn’t worth it. it’s hard to find motivation when the game is unfun, unbalanced, counter-dependant, boring and unrewarding. none of my OG friends play anymore, and just the way it plays feels like an uncanny ghost of itself designed to waste my time and money (WHICH IT DID! we all paid for OW1 and they just straight up deleted our game like WTAF???)
…when i realised it would never be the same again, i tried to focus on having fun - until THAT feeling went away aswell, and i just could not find a genuine reason to play it at all after that. none. nothing. that shit is straight up mentally damaging now i swear lol
if you want to find passion for a game again, i promise you Elden Ring and other soulslikes are the experience you’re looking for. they are literal works of art. beautiful craftsmanship, a developer with a passion and an original team with a vision?!? never has a game made me feel like that. i really could go on forever but i shouldnt spoil. you’ll know what i mean when it hits you ;D

I loved OW1, i really did even during Goats or 2x Shield i didnt care because i could atleast play what i wanted into that
OW2 ruined it, 5v5 ruined it and everything around the game just feels so dull, let me list things that made OW unfun for me
    - Biggest one 5v5, less Teamplay, Tank is miserable, more Counterswaps, more Stomps, 1 Raid Boss tank that cant be 1v1 and just insane Cooldowns
    - Ranked System switched from SR to Divisions, SR is way better imo because you can actually see when you will get the next rank or if youre Top 500 you can see how much SR you need to get there, it was also just mroe fun to see the Number go up everygame
    - Removal of Account Levels / Portraits, OW2 currently gives the players 0 incentive to play besides the BP, but after 80 BP Levels youre done for the Season. OW1 always gave me an incentive regardless of what Season we were in, i could get free Rewards by leveling up or increase my Border Level, and i think OW2 really still misses something like that to keep players grinding
    - The Soundtrack and the HUD are to "generic", OW1s play of the game theme is iconic, the trumpets and the epic feeling hitting was so amazing, OW2s theme isnt bad but its just a bad remix of the Original. Same thing with the HUD, its now so "modern" and has sharp edges which i dont like, or the Killfeed used to be bigger aswell, now its more compact and i sometimes dont even notice it tbh.
    - Events, new OW1 events only really happened in its first year, but those original ones were miles better than a fucking Porsche Collab, Battle of Olympus or the Le SSarafim event. Lucioball, Junkenstein, Uprising, all felt bigger to me, they felt like the whole season revolves around them, they even changed lots of maps to fit the design, but now they just dont do that anymore.
    - They removed our OW1s Ranked Statistics from our profile, this just shows you how little Blizzard cares about the Original Game that actually was good
    - They turned Quick Play into a sweat fest, enforcing penalties for leaving 2 Games, banning people for saying "fuck" or "shit" and just overall removing Social Features like Global Chat or LFG
    - Speaking of Social Features, them removing the End-Game Lobby and the Card Voting System made the game less fun to me, be it the occaisonal trash talk in ranked at the end or just connecting with other players, you cant do this anymore because Blizzard shoves the BP in your face after a game ends
    - Some minor things, the new Ranked Icons look ugly and they dont even display them in your border when playing ranked
I dont know, this was my favourite game from 2016-2022, this was the best Mulitplayer experience i had and they ruined it. But even after saying all that stuff, if they would go back to 6v6 again, nerf Heroes correctly and make it work, i would be all over it again, i would grind like crazy.
So I hope Aaron addresses 6v6 and says they will consider it

    • @feenixsarchive
      @feenixsarchive  5 วันที่ผ่านมา +4

I 100000% agree with every point you presented here. Ow2 became counter-watch LOL. I ALSO miss the sr system; something about it was more satisfying to watch than the current division bar thingy. Oh the lovely level borders, I'm sad they turned it into "progression" levels (I believe that's what they're called) and it's barely shown to other players unless you look into someone's profile (which 90% are set on private!!!). The HUD looking less "smooth." THE EVENTS UGH they just don't hit the same anymore. I barely played any of the new ones bc they looked boring unlike in ow1. And qp becoming sweaty like comp just 💀 THE END CARDS MY BELOVED. And the missing ranks on your border oml yes.
A lot of things were taken out that made the game special, and they really messed up doing that and playing it off as a "new" game.

Especially as soon as players realize tank is more fun but also more killable, right now Orisa would die after what? 10 Junkrat grenades? In 6v6 she has so much less HP/armor and less dmg reduction, she should die after 5-6
The next dev blog and their stance on 6v6 determines if i will stay or uninstall for good

2016 OW1 beta here. I'm a point where I just hop on Overwatch every now and then. I've been playing my other three games that I also play often: HSR, Genshin, and Destiny. At the time of this comment, community creator patch is still going on. And I went back to playing OW and having so much fun, after not playing it for a month. It felt refreshing and gameplay loop felt so much fun for me. Too bad it's limited time.
At this point, there's just nothing for me to look forward to.
    - 5v5 gameplay loop is more stale compared to 6v6. 6v6 should just come back. It's clear 5v5 cannot survive long term
    - On top with 5v5 issues, tanks feels even more worst to play. This also leads to supports and dps not feeling satisfied to play.
    - 90% of OW2 cosmetics are expensive and locked behind paywalls where before we could earn them by playing
    - More skin recolors but still locked behind paywall
    - no level borders
    - no new lores onto Overwatch universe and heroes
    - PvE, the biggest reason of OW2 exists has been officially scrapped
    - No lfg feature
    - Workshop being neglected more
Overwatch 2 is your typical free-to-play live-service game that is design to milk as much money as possible. The only update I see comes from the monetization which that kills the rewards by just playing the game. And it sucks because Overwatch 1 was not like that. There were more care being put onto the Ip and players were the main focus. I would rather have lootboxes to keep earning rather than what we have in Overwatch 2.
But apologies for the long comment, just want to get these thoughts/experiences towards Overwatch. I have tried other games like Apex and Valorant but it still feels like there are no games like Overwatch. There's no Tracer, no Kiriko, Doomfist, no Winston, all of my favorite heroes I play. The universe in Overwatch is beautiful as well.

And 5v5ers will say that 6v6 wasn't good and all of us have nostalgia and rose tinted glasses for ow1, the problem isn't nostalgia, the problem is the format that forces you to counterswap constantly, as Flats said, team 4 originally mentioned that they wanted to keep the option to main a character (because they knew there were a lot of otp's), then, when they weren't able to maintain that condition, they changed the argument that it was intended for players to switch characters.
Team 4 can't accept their errors, they will do whatever they could to simply not accept that they messed up, an example of this is when they ignored the community asking for 6v6 (subject that luckily seems that they are going to talk about sooner or later).
In conclussion, what made overwatch feel so unique was the strong and weak points of every character that in a symmetric format (6v6) each one could cover the weakness of the other, by removing a tank, now the game forces you to focus the weakness of the remaining one since they buffed them so hard that there's no other option, then with the new format a lot of other issues have occurred also, and the solution for blizz was to buff other roles in an infinite cycle of stubbornness against accepting that they did something wrong in the first place.
New players might like the game at it's current state (since the only thing you need to do is to know each character's counter and the skill level has dropped a lot (bigger hitboxes and hitscans having more angles caused by the missing tank)), but for ow1 veterans the game feels boring.
At this point if there was an option to play 6v6 even with double shields and longer queues, I'd gladly take that 100 times than playing a single match of counterwatch.

My parents bought me the game of the year addition for Christmas and I played the hell out of it for at least a year, becoming a Hanzo main that people actually thought was good and competent at my job. I fell out of love for OW after a while and took an extended break from it. When I decided to come back out of nostalgia, I found out that OW 1 was gone. It was taken down and replaced by OW 2. Ever since then I've been extremely on and off with the game. I'll reinstall it for a few months, play on and off, but then decide that actually I don't like OW 2 and uninstall it again. I'm the kind of player that gets the most out of a game when I play with my friends so when I reinstalled ow for my friends I thought it would make the game feel better. It definitely beats playing alone but I still feel so unmoved whether we win or lose and I too realized that even my friends couldn't magically fix the game for me. I've experienced this same thing with league of legends and I've just concluded that I must have "fallen out of love" with these games. There's something magical about getting into a game and wanting to learn everything about it but these online multiplayers inevitably change for better or worse. Now I kinda just play occasionally when someone asks me to hop on so we can have something that everyone can play and I think that's as good as it gets. Just a game to have in the background.

I can really relate to the idea of the characters you play holding you back in certain situations but not wanting to play the stronger characters because you simply don't find them fun.
The way you described it as a drag is exactly how I feel about that dynamic with OW2. A game is meant to be fun and when part of the games premise is pick whoever character you want to play out of this large roster, and then you do that only for the game scenario to basically say "well actually you can't choose that character this match if you want to be able to play the game," it just feels awful.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts :) The whole thing where you are inclined to play a certain pool of characters in order to be "able to play" and also win (counter swapping for instance) just takes away how vast the hero roster actually is. It definitely feels limiting at points when it feels like there's one "right" character to play in a certain scenario.

I understand your perspective and I think it’s a natural response to playing the same game for so long. I haven’t quit the game because I still enjoy learning heroes I haven’t played before but I think one of the big issues that’s really unsolvable about this game is that it’s sweaty no matter what game mode you’re in. Whether you’re playing unranked or competitive it all feels the same and whenever you’re doing something difficult/competitive nearly 100% of the time it’s bound to feel like a chore. The only thing that really fixes it is to (1) stop caring about rank/stats or (2) just take a break from the game or have a backup game that’s relaxing to you

When I hit low masters at the end of overwatches life cycle, I felt genuinely good about my progress, but then I learned of my tank buddies never being able to play with me again.
The game immediately felt less fun because I essentially lost a friend with one change to the game.
And it’s not like we can just play ow1.
I remember starting groups to play in as many games with as many people with mics as I could, there are no more players with mics. No more community, no more fire for getting better among the broader majority of players.
I used to pick this game up here and there, but I can’t remember the last time I played anymore.
    I miss my favorite game

Glad I'm not the only one. I picked up OW1 in Summer 2019 and loved it. I was excited to play every day, I loved grinding comp and doing everything I could to improve my gameplay. Even when I went on loss streaks and dealt with toxic teammates, I still wanted to play. When lockdown hit, I joined a grassroots league and played even more, getting up at 8AM to practice with my team every day for hours, running scrims throughout the weeks. We swept our division 29-1, I still think fondly of a ridiculous strat we pulled off on King's Row during an official match. I have 1400 hours.
Now it only takes a few matches of qp to take the wind out of my sails, even when playing with friends. I only really play OW a few times over the course of a couple weeks and then I drop it again for a few months. It's just not really fun anymore and I'm not sure why. I wish I still loved this game.

I have been playing OW since 3 months after it released and played consistently for 3 years then like you stopped playing it for 3 years a little because I was bored, but mostly because of connectivity issues that only seemed to affect OW and no other games on my console. I can't back because of the promise of PVE and because I still loved the game. Sorry for the long back story, but my main question is how do you rank up. At my highest I was plat, but each season it feels like the game has gotten harder. The previous season, I dropped from rank 1 gold to rank 1 silver and I can't rank back up.

I didn't get into ow until a few weeks before ow2 was announced. I enjoyed the small bit of ow1 I played with friends. Ow2 came out, and I started having to learn the game, so playing with friends became less and less. I tried the "i'll play comp to get better, and to also grind up to play with my friends" (not knowing they were meaning never playing comp with me, not just because new to comp). But comp made me hate the game more. Playing by myself now, I outright despise the game. I only force myself to play the game so I get on my computer. If I don't, my computer just sits and collects dust since my single friend group has drifted apart. I may just hate the game because playing it alone sucks, but the thought of Overwatch is nice, but the game isn't worth it anymore

      @ajchaney6829 5 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

@feenixsarchive Q'ing with friends takes some of the misery off of it. Solo q in ow2 I imagine is worse because it feels so much less social even with the minimal experience I have with ow1. Ow1, having world chat and just random conversations to laugh with, made it feel more like a game with people instead of an offline game against bots. It's sad seeing how Ow2 is vs. what it once was :/. Maybe one day they might be able to repair it, but I highly doubt it

    • @feenixsarchive
      @feenixsarchive  5 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

Yes I totally agree with it becoming less social. I've noticed once ow2 released, voice chat in comp became basically BARREN. In ow1 you're expected to hear at least one person in voice chat especially in higher ranks, but in ow2 there's expected to be silence, and that really took away the competitive-ness of the game too. Idk if ow2 will be "fixed" again, but here's to coping 🍻

    • @ajchaney6829
      @ajchaney6829 4 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

@feenixsarchive ow2 vc is if people aren't silent, then they are telling people to neck themselves. Qp is treated as comp with some. "Qp isn't for screwing around, custom and arcade is." I've seen funny ow1 clips of people actually having fun, but I play peak a boo mirroring a widow and "I'm reported." I play sombra in qp, and my team tells me to go off myself. Ow2 is more toxic also at times. I'm huffing a metic ton of copium with the hopes that they will make it better (remove Stat board etc) but it's more important to put junk filler seasons instead of doing anything to help. 6v6 may help if they do, idk. But the Stat board overshadows everything because toxic and numbers are being seen as so important. It took them how many seasons to make comp more understandable to people?

    • @feenixsarchive

Never got to play Overwatch until 2 came out because little kid me didn't want to spend money. I downloaded it week 1 as I always heard about the love the game got back in 1 and I had always been interested in class-based games like Plants vs Zombies Garden Warfare. I was instantly hooked on the tank role and later became mainly a Doomfist one trick (they get a lot of bad rep, I know). I absolutely love his abilities, his character, and enjoy watching content around him from other creators like Zbra and Quake.
I'm not the craziest player. I still play on a controller despite switching to a PC about a year and a half ago. I only have a little over 100 hours in comp and I'm so close to reaching Diamond 2, solo queueing for the most part. Maybe my opinion isn't as valid because of my lower rank. But something just feels different from when i first started playing in season 1?? I can't really explain it. The more I play my little one trick Doom I start to realize "wow, this tank sucks". Unless I'm some crazy player like Zbra or Quake it feels like I'm FORCED to play Mauga, Hog, or whatever the hell the "meta" is.
Again, maybe it's just me. Maybe it's because I'm on a controller and can't hit half my peashooter damaging Doom shots lol. But it just feels miserable playing tank in general. I really hope something changes soon regarding tanks besides of just adding more random passives. This was a really nice video to watch, especially being able to see the game from a support main perspective rather than the usual tank player.

This sounds a lot like my experience.
I was originally an Xbox player who started playing to hide from IRL problems. I met a bunch of friends online and really enjoyed grinding and playing with them as we all learned and a handful of us reaching top 500 (me on tank). I remember those eager days to get home and log on where we would all chat in discord all day waiting for the next bunch of games we would play, we even participated in console tournaments.
Eventually during the content lull a few people left the game and it was just me and my tank duo with an occasional support friend mixed in. I eventually made the switch to PC in the last few seasons of OW1 and peaked around diamond.
Fast forward to OW2 as a former top 500 tank main, I do not enjoy the tank experience. I used to have a 2nd tank to share the 6 CC’s I had coming my way while now I'm alone to take all 5, every loss no matter what I do I get spammed “tank diff” and I occasionally get suspended for throwing despite typically holding a 55% or better win rate.
I just don't enjoy the game anymore, I am expected to do the job of 2 without any help, I get all the blame and most importantly I am no longer able to duo up with my friend where we could control the game place and in comms by having everyone coalesce behind the tanks plans. Now it feels like with how the meta forces team composition and with counterpicking as bad as it is the game has devolved into a 4v4 team Deathmatch with the tanks sitting off to the side in a CC chain for the DPS to charge ultimates on.
I am finding myself playing less and less and I just don't see it ever getting better since they basically took a very unique game and highjacked the franchise to make a shop tailored to the lowest players who will mindlessly spend money on skins and will ditch the game at the drop of a hat for a new fad so an ow1 OG tank main like me can screw off since I'm clearly not wanted or appreciated anymore. It's kind of sad with the history of the game and what this game meant to me helping me navigate my trauma years ago.

I absolutely felt you on how ow2 feels like team deathmatch. It's the most accurate description I feel and tanks feel like such an important role, but they carry so much responsibility and burden in a team fight. They're expected to make space and get kills, but also peel for the backline at the same time and also not get absolutely MELTED within a second. It's a hard role for just one person which is why I highly believe the tank role NEEDS the other tank back in a 6v6 setting. We'll see how they handle on bringing 6v6 back :)

This describes my experience too, in some ways. I stopped feeling the desire to play every day about a year before OW1 ended though. I think the lack of interest from the devs and the community being not well because if it somehow ruined the charm back then. I loved the game, currently I have almost 3k hours in the game, most of which are from OW1. OW2 came out and it felt new, kinda, but not really. I stopped playing except a little bit here and there. I decided that I wouldn't play unless I wanted to. After a year of that, I finally feel like playing again, but not really because of the balance. The game feels anxiety inducing. It doesn't seem like it is going to improve. The devs seem misguided in their notion of what they think good balance for the game should be, and honestly, I think its always been that way, even in OW1 days. Either they made the game with one premise for balance and changed it or, they accidentally got it right and had no clue why when they launched OW1. They systematically removed what was good about the game. The devs may go back to 6 v 6, we'll see. If they don't understand why the game is bad right now, they might not do well in the 6 v 6 (better) format either. I just want Marvel Rivals to come out and I am tired of hoping the OW devs will figure it out and being let down for years. They mean well, but they didn't deserve the game they made. Poor custodians in OW1, and poor vision the entire time, they took the best videogame ever made and somehow found a way to ruin it. I love them because I know they love us and the game, but I'm upset with them because they just cannot do right by the game, no matter how good their intentions are. Something is wrong at the core. I miss the old days of looking forward to playing the game at any moment I could and wanting to improve to be my very best.

Being a “Mercy main” has a bad connotation for some people, probably because of Blizzard having things like mass rez, moth meta valk, etc., but what people forget is that Mercy takes skill. Just a different kind of skill. You don’t always need to aim like a Tracer or Widow to be good at OW. Your positioning, cooldown usage, determine who/when to heal/dmg boost, ult usage, ult tracking, etc all played a part in how good a player is. It’s why Monkey/Reinhardt are high skill heroes even though they don’t require aim yet they’re also easy to pick up and play- they’re amazing hero designs because they’re easy to learn hard to master. Then OW added things that skipped this learning curve and had no downsides, the first sign of this was Moira but she “had no utility” so it wasn’t too egregious, but we let it slide so we got Brig and then a steady crash in the game’s quality for years after that. The game is now about denial, standing main instead of making plays, and counterpicking. Every hero now is a Brig with a kit so complete without weaknesses and button press for free value abilities. Mercy is a big loser in 5v5 and I feel bad for those that mained her. Hopefully they turn it around one day.
Bring back 6v6 and save the game!

YES the fact that ow was based on how well someone could play their hero, without the emphasis of aim, made it that much more unique and fun. Though with ow2, I definitely think it turned into a "typical" fps game where you needed to focus on aiming and securing picks more than anything. Which hero provided the most impact by just EXISTING just made it so... bland idk. Thank you for your thoughts :)

@@feenixsarchiveYep I just finished the video and I resonate with it so much, even though for me the game came out when I was halfway through college and I main Genji/Doom. I had just built my PC that summer and the first games I got were OW/PUBG. PUBG was a glitchy mess and I was terrible at KBM aim since I also came from Xbox so dealing with the harsh recoil and playing solo was just not that fun. So as a lifetime FPS player I found myself playing more and more OW and gravitating towards Reinhardt since I loved to be a good teammate and lead the charge and he was a great hero to become more comfortable with KBM on. Then I figured out how much I loved Genji and watched the OWWC 2017 USA vs South Korea and got deep into the competitive scene. The love went deep from there. Then ever since Brig’s release in 2018 it’s just been one big downhill slope with them scrambling to recover, but I had always held out hope it could be turned around. Now, I finally have lost hope and don’t even enjoy the game anymore. Hopefully they start reconsidering design choices and bring back 6v6 because the game I loved more than any other is completely gone. Sorry for the rant but it’s interesting to hear from others who feel the same- the game lost its soul.

You're not alone and you summed it up pretty much same as me. It has lost it's magic. They have gotten rid of so much skill expression for the sake of making it accessible. Heroes are more powerful than ever so much so it feels like you're losing to the heroes and not the player. They completely destroyed a role I loved to play in OW1, gutted so many play styles. Modern overwatch is just a dumbed down shell of the game we all loved and grinded for hours on end.

YES THANK YOU! You bring up a really good point that making heroes more "easy" and "accessible" to new players really took away some of the charm of the game for sure I think. When it's the hero's fault but not the player, man, it really sucks.

Nobody played Ana because she was impossible to play on Console back then with lower projectile size and weaker allied aim assist and smaller hitboxes. When Brig was good with Winston people literally didn't know how to play her. The Zen, Lucio Dive was a throw pick in low elo when it was meta. I got hard countered every game, Reaper, Bastion, Hog, Mei, Torb, just every single game if I played well. The awful spam maps are gone and there are way more open dive maps style maps than before even though the majority are still ground based Rush maps. Support immediately felt different though I can see why people might miss the old Support gameplay.

I broke my skill plateau within the last year of Overwatch 1. Hit the technical t500 of the time. The entire time, there was nagging voices within the game chat & my mind telling me I didn't deserve it; didn't earn it. I was a Console Player, & I came late to this game, near the 2 2 2 introduction. After i peaked somewhere around 3.8 - 3.9, something just snapped. I didnt care anymore. I reached my peak. Everyone else i played was miles better, or hell, sometimes even cheating.
That's what made me quit. After you hit your peak, what is there for you? I only touch customs now.

Everyone was starting to quit at the time I got my highest peak. I felt as if I accomplished something amazing, but given the circumstances, it felt as though it was unearned. Hearing players like you peak so high so consistently makes me a bit envious. I wish I had the skill & people around me to push me up the ranked ladder.
I think I was here for the grind. Once that was gone, when I knew I'd have to put my life into this grind, I stopped. I realized it wasn't worth the stress.
You hear so much nonsense coming from this game. "This is META!" "cheaters running galore!!" "Buy this skin!!!" ; it's exhausting.
Now that I'm away from the noise, I feel as though I noticed that it's a bit of a universe in itself. Contained madness. Once you're away from it, you'll realize just how futile much of your struggle was.

Once you start realizing that it's not worth the stress trying to grind higher than your peak, that's definitely where you start becoming more indifferent and stop caring as much. Once the grindset is gone, it's kinda peaceful :)

So from what I’m understanding ow1 mercy 1 trick dislikes ow2 because her hero pool was not big enough and now shows stats across teammates, showing how much her team is doing versus her. Tbh, understandable. I love ow but I like playing the heroes I want to play and spent time learning. When those heroes aren’t good I just take a break until they are viable. The stat board has both been a blessing and a curse. Honestly I would be okay just getting rid of it just for the fact of it being useless and a good way to cause tilt amongst players

I 100% relate to your journey, especially during covid albeit as a dps player instead. I did really enjoy flexing to Ana on support as to me she is such a cool concept for a "healer" in a shooter. It felt like even if didn't dps or hit crazy sleeps (I did, my Ana was S tier fr), you could still get value.. Hitting a big nade was so much harder and 10x more rewarding than in OW2 where Kiriko just comes in from Narnia and pressing E on the ground...
It's such a snooze fest of what feels like you have to work MUCH less for value in the grand scheme, which just creates this deathmatchy feel to every single game mode. Mind you I enjoy deathmatch in the arcade section, but the complexity of tank synergies and support synergies and making sure to cover bases with a dps line up in case of flyer heroes etc. was so much more diverse and complex.
Shame that we lost a great thing, that although not as main stream as some fps titles out there (that's okay, Overwatch can be niché), it had a devout fanbase, that it just feels like they took a big fat dookie on with OW2 to try to rake in as many new players as possible to replace their loyal fanbase for years..

    • @feenixsarchive
      @feenixsarchive  3 วันที่ผ่านมา

The last point of trying to bring in many new players and practically neglecting the original fanbase is SO REAL. I remember them specifically changing mercy a ton so she's easier to pick up for new players (even tho she was already easy to pick up in general). Yes, I agree the new synergies of team play in ow2 kinda feels like a deathmatch and feels like you need to work much harder to get value OR just abuse a character which makes the game SUPER easy, which sucks.

I started playing overwatch back in 2018 and fell in love with the game and more specifically Lucio. I’ve onetricked Lucio since 2019 with an unhealthy amount of hours into him. The reason I loved him so much was his ability to fall into different playstyles. (and movement XD) I was a “Reddit Lucio” being able to play aggressive and back up our tanks while our other support was able to focus our DPS. I would mostly focus speeding our tanks into and outta combat and booping enemies into them while making my own plays in the back lines.
When OW2 rolled around I was excited to play the little aggressive frog I loved, but I couldn’t play him in the way I enjoyed anymore. Playing “Reddit Lucio” didn’t give good results and ended up feeling like throwing the more I did it. I have found certain ways to force that play style but I can only play the way I enjoy with a full 5 stack. I think it’s because team play isn’t playing as a team anymore. It’s a team that all goes for their own plays.
To me it feels like they removed a huge part of skill expression. The people who knew the little details of their characters were able to use them to the fullest. Like mercy’s Super jump if a mercy knew how to use it chances were you had a good mercy on your team, but now it’s a function everyone can use.
Another thing that’s bothers me is the power creep on tanks but really in general. They have to buff them in drastic ways to make them playable but playable doesn’t make them fun.
I still play from time to time but it only takes a few match’s to completely drain any desire I have for the game.
I just want the fun game that I used to play back man, for now I’ll just move on to playing more Elden Ring.

There are so many people like us who have been with this game for 8 years, since the beginning. There are no other games that feel even remotely close. Overwatch is such a special game that over time has just gotten more and more watered down. I love the game and the characters so much but it has definitely gotten to the point where it's lost it's identity trying to "fit in" with other games like Valorant. It's been so simplified to the point where the creativity and skill expression feels non-existent. All of the synergy is gone between teammates and it's like it's being made to appeal to people who don't play the game more than people who actually do.
I would rather be in that 3 year period of time where Overwatch had 0 updates at all than the complete disappointment OW2 has been so far. At least then I could enjoy playing tank. I still can't leave this game though, I've found myself recently also becoming the mercy girl stereotype & that's really the only fun I've been able to have recently. Other characters are either too simple or feel bad to play now.
This game needs it's personality back & it needs to stop pandering to people who don't even play the game. It's not even nostalgia at this point, Overwatch 1, 6v6, and all it's features and balance are better than OW2 no contest.

      @feenixsarchive  2 วันที่ผ่านมา

I absolutely agree with you. It felt like the game was trying to become more "mainstream" with other fps games and therefore lost its charm and uniqueness. It felt like it was trying to appeal to newer players rather than the veteran players, which isn't remotely too much of a bad thing, but it left us feeling very neglected. The game absolutely lost its personality bc of that. I'd also much prefer the content drought of ow bc I still had goals I wanted to reach back then 😔

I'm also an OG player and I've felt the same way. I recently came to the sad realization that Overwatch 2 just wasn't made for me, or OW1 players. It feels like it has been optimised to gather more "classic FPS" players from other games, with a more kill-based fast paced gameplay. What made me fall in love with OW1 is that you could pick nearly any hero and feel like you were contributing something to the team. For example when playing tank, if you weren't an aggressive player you could still focus on protecting your team and be helpful in doing so. The game used to valorize different playstyles but now in OW2, the main goal is just to wipe the enemy team as fast as possible. Tank is miserable and supports are put in a weird position where they have to put their entire healing on the tank or else the tank falls but also they need to help secure kills as well by doing damage. If you don't counterplay you're also pretty much cooked. Mercy is still to this day my second most played hero but I literally haven't played her since OW2 came out because the burst damage is just too strong. I still play for the dailies and weeklies because of FOMO but most of the time logging in feels like a chore, as soon as events and/or battlepasses are done I usually stop playing until the next update.
That's gonna sound insane but after years of hating League of Legends I finally gave this game a good shot and I'm actually enjoying it so much. The servers are so much more stable, I don't get sent to foreign servers with 300ms, the updates are frequent and grinding games even outside of an event still feels rewarding. If you don't pay for the battlepass, grinding OW2 gives you nearly jack diggidy squat (I know they've been improving that over time but still). I've also made the decision to put more time into more solo story-driven FPS games instead.
With all of that said I hope you find your next favorite game and I hope it helps you move on from OW.

    • @feenixsarchive

You're so right, ow2 definitely tried to follow other mainstream fps games, and I think that's also what ruined it. I totally felt you with logging on feeling like a chore. It definitely didn't help bc ow2 didn't feel like you had much to grind for other than the bp 😔
I heard some of my other ow friends trying league and enjoying it as well, and I'm glad you ended up liking it too! Enjoy what game makes you happy (altho I'll poke fun at you jokingly in the distance LMAOOO)! And thank you 🫶

I might commit crimes if we go one more season without even CONSIDERING that “certain” changes from OW1 to OW2 were HORRIBLE.
And besides me blatantly referencing 6v6, even UI changes they made were dumb.
Why did they remove level borders? Why did they remove leveling in general? Why did they remove ranks showing? Why did they remove ranks being on the borders? Why did they remove medals? Why did they remove end game cards?
And dear lord, white UIs are disgusting. I will always say that Black UIs>White UIs.
The borders literally look like the Overwatch BETA borders.
