      RazvanSuican That's why I think the FW is such a good exercise -- it has such a practical benefit (as I'm sure you know very well!) What use is it developing muscles solely for aesthetic purposes?

    This comment may be a bit long, but for those who do read it, please bear with me. I am a 39 year old male and only have came across your channel in the past couple of days and I must say that its truly eye opening to watch your videos and motivational as well. For most of my life I have been overweight and at one point - morbidly obese. I was pushing close to 400 lbs and at 5'9", that is NOT a pretty sight. Lost quite a bit of weight over the years due to an Opioid addiction/dependence to my opiate base medication that I was prescribed for my various back/nerve issues and chronic pain. Vicodin, Oxycontin, Percocet, and Morphine was what I was prescribed over the years to try to help with the pain. Once you develop an addiction and a dependence to those pills, once you do run out, the pain is magnified due to not having it in your system.
    For example, with the Vicodin (5/325), I was taking 10 of those to start the day off and throughout the day would pop a few more while at work. All in all, with the Vicodin, when I would get my script filled of the 90 pills that the Dr had prescribed to me, they would be gone in just a few days and it was the same with all the other medications as well. I would get my 30 day prescription filled from the pharmacy and would be out in a few days. The issues I am dealing with regarding my back issues are this: torn discs, bulging discs, spinal stenosis, sciatica, degenerative disc disease, nerve pain/neuropathy and that was according to the last MRI I did have. Now, on top of all of those, when I was 27 years old, I was diagnosed as being bi-polar, so I do take medication for that.
    Fast forward a few years and for the past 1.5 to 2 years, I have been clean through the use of Suboxone and that saved my life. Got a new Dr who did prescribe the Suboxone and for the back issues/pain, am taking a couple of medications, not opiate based at all, that do work on the pain. Granted, it does not take it all away and some days when I get up, I cannot get out of bed like a normal person, but have to roll out of the bed, but I guess that is something Ill have to deal with on those days when it happens. Every day I take 12 pills total that work on my pain, my bi-polar, high blood pressure, and my Opioid addiction/dependence issues - 4mg Suboxone film 1x a day. That is the backstory that I wanted to explain before I went into my question regarding fitness and eating right due to the different medications I am currently on.
    My current weight is 302lbs and like I said, I am 39 years old and am 5'9" and have watched a few of your videos and I must say, the way you talk about nutrition, losing weight, building up muscle, etc is very inspiring and motivational. Ive tried so many things over the years in an attempt to lose weight, but could never lose it and keep it off. I did lose a ton of weight when I was going through my addiction and dependence issues, but slowly over time that weight has began to come back, etc. Its almost a losing battle for me in trying to lose weight and a few weeks/months ago, I basically said fuck it, I do not care anymore about my weight, etc, but that is truly the easy way out. Through the videos you do put out, I have been inspired, challenged, motivated, etc and its as if now I have this burning desire to actually take my health seriously and attack it and really show my body who is boss. Because if I do not, it can have devestating effects on me and I could die and I am way too young to go out this soon.
    Ive decided on a high protein/low to no carb diet, giving up all the soda, sugar, energy drinks, snacks, bread, etc, but have no idea if supplements would be needed with such a regimen and besides walking, I really do not know what exercises I could do that would not make my back worse off than it currently is while losing weight and getting my life, my weight back in order. I would love to be able to go to the gym, but am currently unemployed and while my wife does have a great paying job, a gym membership at this time is really out of the question. Maybe once I do go back into the workforce, at that time I could get a gym membership, but really if and once I do, Id be clueless when I would be there, but that is something that I would be doing down the line once I have extra money to get a membership.
    So really, what would be your recommendation to someone in my situation? I do realize that anything you do say should be talked to with my Dr and with that said, that is my question to you or to anyone else here who comments. What can and could I do to lose the weight, keep it off, and maybe in due time, begin to actually build and develop muscle either during weight coming off or after it coming off? Thank you for the videos and they truly are a Godsend.
    Eric W.

    Love listening to Doug. I can learn much from him as he's so knowledgeable about biomechanics. Very interested to see that he apparently (unless I'm wrong) isn't a fan of isometrics, a technique that's always intrigued me.
    I'd be interested to hear Doug's view on our fellow Italian-American, the late bodybuilder Dennis Tinerino.

    Re farmers walk; I was on a 40 day tour with an 80 lb suitcase. By the time I was back home, the forearm involved with suitcase was VERY much larger than the opposite forearm. I already had done years of weighted wrist-bending forearm exercise, with nowhere near the benefit.

    For purely bodybuilding purposes they make a good point but things like farmers carries and the pallof press have applicability to other components of physical fitness. In no way are they useless.

    Good episode. However, the med ball slam is to develop upper body explosiveness for strength and sports. The farmers walk is for grip strength, cardio conditioning, and carrying heavy objects. Useful for strongman and moving furniture in the long run. Bodybuilding, not so much.

    In the sixties I competed in what they called odd lifts. Like squat and behind the neck press and deadlifts and handstand push-ups. And also squat and the farmers carry. Just weird stuff, this was in San Diego. They had weight classes with your weighted dumbbells to carry for distances at the beach in the sand. Each weight class had their poundage. Other than for that contest for distance is the fact it was good cardio.

    Pistols is a great exercise due to it's ability to link the entire body for effective total body training. It's not just for Stability but also teaching a person to brace the abdominal muscles and obliques as well. I do them for reps and get a great pump in my legs and glutes

    Those one-legged squats work great on me. I think because it takes pressure off back. I should say quarter/half squats. Anyway I get a huge pump when I do 15 plus reps. I just started doing them and wow thighs are blowing up LOL I am up to 30 lb DB in one hand. I use other hand to hold on chair back for balance.

  • @miguelrepettogym
    @miguelrepettogym 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    This time I will have to disagree with Doug. I think the farmer's walk is as functional as squats. Just as we use squats every time we get up from a chair, we use the farmer's walk every time we get three or four grocery store bags in each hand and we take them from the car to the kitchen. We humans have used the farmer's walk since we appeared in this world, even many people who live in the mountains still use it to take water from the rivers to their homes. And like all exercises, it can be risky if you use an excessive weight. But if you do the farmer's walk properly and with the right weight, it is an excellent exercise to maintain the body's functionality.

    • @sixbells99
      @sixbells99 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I hope now this is not the start of giving Ric Order 66. Just because Rich Piana didn't respond to a random email from Jason asking him to make him a Sponsored Athlete, Jason got his people to ruin Rich Social media sites with death threats on Rich and his family, horrible vile stuff, such "as we know where you live" we are going to cut your wifes head off". Ric STAY AWAY from this Jason guy. He is an evil parasite, the ultimate hater, he gets his social media numbers up by trashing a person who has a popular site and then trying to give a sorry in front of the camera.

    • @hippo-potamus
      @hippo-potamus 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are so misinformed its laughable. Rich Piana and Jason are cool as per their colab videos. The only one talking shit and bring up the past is you mate. Ric is a bb legend from the golden era, Jason IMO would never disrespect, so your assumptions are delusional. Jason has collaborated with Rich and also with the Blonde Myth himself Lee Priest. Go back and hide in your cave troll.

    • @sixbells99
      @sixbells99 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Considering what Jason has done calling me a Troll is a bit rich. Jason was able to get free publicity for his sites by doing death threats to people and their families and pretending to be mentally handicapped. I know all about the co labs, but let’s understand why. Rich Piana met Jason for the first time at a Expo meet / greet and to camera he laughed at Rich as he told him he was the one who ordered the death threats. In rage and on camera Rich slapped him around a little, but at the end said they were cool. Then Rich got a media back lash as Jason has learning difficulties, Rich got labelled as slapping around a mentally handicapped person. Piana didn’t know anything about Jason at the time of the incident or his learning difficulties. Of course Rich then wanted to make peace and do work with Jason to avoid destroying his image any further. I have strong doubts if this Jason guy has ANY learning difficulties most likely faking it. I have worked with people with learning difficulties for years, I know the difference. Ric is a big guy but he should just pick up the phone to Piana and ask him if he should interview Jason. He is Toxic and I hope Ric stays away.

    Doug is just brilliant. Very knowledgeable. You cannot argue against his logic. He thinks not just in terms of the actual exercise but the longer term - Is this a good exercise, is it loading target muscle correctly, is it for example loading the spine and is that wise to do that over the long term for ones health when one is older, can one load a target muscle better?. Inspirational stuff. Bought his manuscript. Its fantastic.

  • @jancelconroy4720
    @jancelconroy4720 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I think some people are missing the point. strongman training and Olympic weightlifting or a sport in the south. well they provide good physical attributes and conditioning. most of the general public should be doing the basics. what dogs book is trying to preach is effective exercise that minimizes injury. in bodybuilding alone 90% of the conditioning is done through dieting one of the hardest things for most athletes to do. then the rest is training and there certain movements that shouldn't be done because they're not necessary. also when it comes to sports some movements in strongman or Olympic weightlifting don't translate in to sports effectively. the bottom line is you have to Taylor your workouts to your specific goal. if your trying to lose weight and be healthy the then do the basics diet and proper technique for weight lifting , and conditioning. if you're doing a specific sport it's about your sport and building a base of strength. if you love lifting heavy s*** then lift heavy s***. but just because strongman training is effective for one person doesn't mean that is effective and safe. also mr. John doesn't tell you about the multiple injuries that he has acquired through his training. this also goes for the athletes and Louie Simmons camp. and don't get me started on the difference between athletes who are on steroids. a lot of these athletes who are on steroids that includes bodybuilders and power athletes can do phenomenal things with their bodies because they are able to withstand the rigors of training. thus because they're able to recover faster they might do dangerous moves that are not beneficial. read the book he won't regret it.

    Humans don't really have finger muscles in the fingers themselves that move the fingers. I'm sure Doug knows this but he makes it sound like as if he does not when he talks about "finger muscles". I agree with his point though for the most part. There are only so many hours in a day and there are many other forearm exercises to do.

  • @ConnorGregory25
    @ConnorGregory25 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    What he said about farmers walks is stupid. Farmers walks are great for grip strength, great for forearms, will build big calves, great for traps for the same reason deadlifting gives you big traps because traps grow through stabilization, and the stretch is being activated under heavy weight.

    • @DancerInTheHeart
      @DancerInTheHeart 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I respectfully disagree. Full body exercises like that screw with your training split and there is no evidence that isometrics are the ideal way to grow muscle for bodybuilding. Your lats may stabilize the bench press but you would not use the bench to grow your lats. Over time you may have a bit of growth but if you're a serious bodybuilder why would you care`?

  • @douglasachaiba7885
    @douglasachaiba7885 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Doug dropped the ball on this interview. A few things he said was wrong and shows lack of understanding. Just because you know biomechanics doesn’t mean you understand muscle physiology. The medicine ball slam is a very valid exercise to produce explosive strength and power. Nearly all MMA athletes use this. Next farmers walks are a valid exercise. Some the best trap growth comes from loading the traps in the stretch position. Most the strong men use this and said their traps exploded with these with heavy weight and time under tension. Also you said grip is in the finger muscles. Their are no finger muscles, all the fingers movements are from muscles that are in the forearm. So you develop isometric strength and enhance grip by doing this. Grip is important in some sports like rock climbing, judo, Jiu Jitsu. I don’t know where this info came from, but this was the worst I’ve heard from him.

    No Way!!! I've watched several of these videos in a row now like 8-10 and in the beginning I really liked what this guy had to say. He def knows his stuff and is quite intelligent but he relies on these studies for all his knowledge. So after listening for multiple videos I am beginning to see the limitations of what he is preaching. If any exercise has any potential of injury or puts stress on the body he condemns it.
    Farmers carry yes does put quite a bit of axial load on the body and only works the traps. But as far as developing ones traps, there is no better exercise. Not even shrugs touch the growth potential of the farmers carry. And hey squats put a ton of axial load on the spine so should those be totally avoided and laughed at? Come on...use some common sense here and look at bodybuilding over the decades and what exercises have always existed and have shown time and time again to develop that certain muscle group.
    Basically, you can't rely on just book knowledge and paper studies as your only source of knowledge.

      So throw away science and biomechanics and rely on the bro sciences because... Feelings? If you're butthurt that you're favorites are included, you might be taking this too personally. You can still train the way you like yet are offended by Doug's words because he is simply pointing out the more effective and safer choices to make. The stupidity level is really at its apex when you talk to a guy who has competed since mid 70s and recently won a contest in his 60s like he's a some Joe blow who trains occassionally and only has "book smarts". He not only has scientific understanding but practical experience in bodybuilding which surpasses most people who train. The only thing you offer besides low key diss is your unsupported opinion that exercice A gives the best result. In this battle, not only are you woefully unarmed, you're butt nekkid.

    I never get tired of listening to Doug. I'm surprised at a lot of these comments. Correct, Doug is coming from a bodybuilding perspective, but, nonetheless, his point is that the Farmer's Carry (for example) is a silly exercise for anyone looking to improve grip strength. There are simply better, more effective and safer ways to do it. The only reason would be if you are actually competing as a "strongman" and that is specifically a movement you have to perform as part of competing.

The exercise book market is over saturated and so I'm not surprised he is self-publishing - no virgin author self-publishes their first book if they can get a big publisher to market them. Even Ric seemed to raise his eyebrows at that one. The guy is a bullshit artist. Yes, some exercises optimize better than others, because of the bio-mechanics of the movement. But most exercise is beneficial and variety and creativity meets a fundamental psychological need. Don't piss on everyone's parade!

    All you gotta do is ask yourself, "did the greatest physiques of all time (40's thru 70's) make use of these exercises?"

      You clearly don't appreciate how much Doug knows, every personnel trainer/fitness enthusiast in the world should listen to what he has to say.
